Review: Melbournian eccentric Bell Towers is back on Public Possession for the first time in 2018, carrying with him all the tools to turn your common-or-garden flat-pack bookcase into a portal to another dimension. In its EP opening "Dance Mix" form, "IKEA Hack" pits a druggy, chugging analogue machine groove against chiming melody lines, glossy synth-pop chords and twinkling piano lines that inspire the same kind of euphoria that most feel after leaving a branch of the well-known Swedish furniture chain. It's accompanied on the A-side by the rather delicious, slow motion Chill Out Mix, while side B is taken up by a long, lo-fi, eccentric and crackling Baba Stiltz remix that helpfully features vocal samples explaining how to turn some off-the-shelf consumer product into something entirely different.

Review: Houseum goes from strength to strength; from a highly respected online channel they've started hosting awesome intimate events in the heart of their Parisian hometown and now they've launched a label. If you've spent so much as five minutes on their platform, you'll know the vibes on offer here; deep dreamy house laced with cosmic textures, rippling soul and a strong sense of timelessness. From the big vocal salvo of Bellaire's "Oh" right through to the final dubby echoes of Jesse Bru's "Setup", this is exactly the high level of launch release you'd expect from such a respected platform. Houseum is a feeling. A good feeling.

  1. Ganymede

  3. Atomic Fuzz
Review: A long time coming, Ben boe drops his very first solo EP on the label he conceived over 8 years ago. Narrtives of deep space travel and journeys into the abyss permeate the release from start to finish. Ganymede graces the A-Side with its interstellar funk and sci-fi chords cutting through a heavy atmosphere like that of the namesake moon itself. A sampled, spooky tale of watery destinations round off the a-side and lead into the depths of DEEeeP-r on the flip. Fuzzy saturated textures, whispering chords and heavy bass soften the descent whilst a chopped and maipulated vocal drones "Go Deeper, Stay Longer". Drawing influence from his home county, the early Sheffield stylings, machine-precision breakbeats and soft harmonies of Atomic Fuzz round off the EP.

Review: LA cosmic soul merchant Benedek returns with his first fresh material since 2017's exemplary sophomore set Bene's World. Fitting the season with balmy charm, "Earlyman Dance" is every bit as slinky and blue light as the title (or indeed Benedek's reputation) suggest. Balearic, jazzy and just pinch of yacht; both the original and the Canyon Version are pure sunset jams. "Maca" continues the slinky theme with a hip-wriggling, liquid rhythm while the much more mystic, spacious "Tengu's Mystery" takes us much deeper into the unknown folds of the night and the heavily reverbed slo-mo "Sixtern" chugs us all the way to sunup. It's not early. It's not late. Benedek, as ever, is bang on time.

Review: It's been a while since the first release on forTunea came out. Now it's time to wake up from hibernation! Klaus Benedek delivers us this time with „Calm Before The Storm" an extraordinary piece of music. This over 9 minute journey bundles the sound of current deep house with a breakbeat rhythm. This track takes its time and builds up to a smooth string chorus that will certainly give you goosebumps. The B-Side on the other hand stays more traditionally in the house sector. First we engaged the service of Vienna's MPC wizard Roman Rauch (Philpot, Quintessentials, Tenderpark) to give KB's track „Still Daydreaming" a harder edge, while the EP's title track on B2 bounces with it's hypnotic filtered hookline the listener into new heights. Give this release a try! It is definitely a record that is quite unique in its own way. Enjoy!

Limited to 300 copys! There will be no repress! Mastering by Patrick Pulsinger.

Review: Swedish house sort Henrik Bergqvist built his reputation on a pair of fine releases for Aniara Records, so it's good to see him return to the Swedish label after a two-year absence. He begins in confident fashion with "Sanctuary", a late night romp through warehouse-friendly pastures full of tactile synth bass, ghostly melody lines and muscular riffs. "Renewal" takes a similar 'Red Zone era David Morales' approach, adding some moody pads and synthesizer flashes to slightly lighten the mood, before Bergqvist charges off into dub-house territory on the low-slung shuffle of "Have A Nice Trip".

Review: Since making his debut on Wax Classic back in 2012, Nick Beringer has been label surfing, delivering high quality deep house for the likes of Skylax, Made Fresh Daily and, most recently, Taverna Tracks. Second Floor marks his return to Wax Classic, and includes a quintet of impressive cuts. The woozy chords, rolling grooves and chunky analogue bass of "57th Corner" kicks things off, before the Berlin-based producer goes all DJ Sneak with the bombastic beats, dubbed-out chords and acid bass of "Urban Canyon". Flip for the smooth, bass-heavy swing of "Rotation", the pitched-down, Adriatic afternoon laziness of "Reifenrittberger", and the sun-kissed soulfulness of "Sylvia Is Blessed".

Review: Modelmaker is a new London label from the collective minds of Dan Berkson and James What. The esteemed house duo has long been garnishing a range of international imprints with their inventive analogue house and techno sounds, but now they are focussing on their own outlet. Initially launching with a couple of self penned EPs, release number three will be the pair's long-time-in-the-making debut album, and after that a considered selection of other talents will join the ranks as the label pushes on. Always primarily focussed on machine made, texturally rich house and techno, each release will come with unique artwork based on works from What's great grandfather, Conrad Felixmuller, who was a well known German expressionist.

Review: Since announcing their debut album on UK institution Ninja Tune earlier this year, Irish duo Bicep present the first single from the album in the form of title track "Aura". Said to have been created via a series of accidents while experimenting with a new studio setup, the track finally came together through trial and error and here is the wonderful result. A dark and sexy serving of dancefloor drama featuring 'hands in the air' style vintage synth melodies, life affirming strings and immaculate drum programming. It is sure to be one of 'those' tracks you're going to be hearing a lot of in the latter part of 2017 and beyond.

Review: Belfast pair Bicep are smart operators. Having previously doffed a cap to both Italian house and classic New Jersey garage, recent releases have seen them play around with a variety of rhythmic patterns and more advanced musical elements. They're at it again here on their latest outing for Aus. Opener "Just" is pleasingly cheery, with simple but addictive electronic melodies and sweeping chords nestling above a head-nodding, hip-hop influenced groove. "Celeste" is undeniably Balearic, with sun-kissed pianos, dreamy pads and drifting vocal samples stretching out over delay-laden, African-influenced percussion. Finally, they return to their rush-inducing best on "Back 2 U (Tranz Dub)", a loving fusion of vintage progressive house builds, winding melodies and mid '90s beats.

Review: The brilliantly monikered Big Strick - familial elder to Omar S and responsible for the odd killer release on his younger cousin's FXHE imprint - belatedly sates the appetite of record collectors keen to indulge in his recent album Detroit Heat with a six track selection of the choicest cuts spread across this twelve inch. Seemingly drawing influence from a myriad of Motor City influences, Detroit Heat impressively flits between murky deep house, tracky techno and hypnotic jack-tracks. Like many of his contemporaries, Strick is a sucker for 'cement mixer' production - that distinctly Detroitian sound where every beat, groove or bassline sounds like the master tapes have been marinated in grit. That trademark sound, alongside a solid selection of floor-friendly grooves, makes Detroit Heat an excellent addition to the Motor City house canon. The rubbery spinal atmospherics of "Under Tone" and the Tony Coates vocally assisted jack of "Maybe 1 Day" are particular highlights!

Review: FXHE bloodline member Big Strick continues to excel on his own 7 Days Ent. label, dropping his first 12" of 2012 which has a nice community feel to proceedings. Alpha & Omega introduces us to Generation Next, a rising 16 year old talent from the streets of Detroit who contributes alongside Mr Strickland to all three tracks here. Stylistically, the three tracks here seem equally indebted to Juan Atkins pure techno endeavours as Infiniti and the sub aqueous grooves of Drexciya, not least the restrained title track which shimmers from the murky depths into a finely crafted liquid groove imbued with bubbling elatory Utopian textures. On the flip "Origin" ripples with pressure, its rhythmic elements grappling for your attention as the space between them decreases with Strick and Gen Next expertly layering texture upon texture. A masterful 12" shaped exercise in modern day Detroit sounds is completed with the devious electrofied snap of "Bloodline".

Review: Bike Thieves have been the duo behind Stockholm's mighty open-air party named Garden, since the summer of 2014. Comprised of Daniel Strand and Erik Danielson, these two old-time comrades share a penchant for gritty house and disco - as heard on the inaugural release of the new Vastenkransen label. The jazzy, looped-up and dusted down deep house of "Laura" will appeal to fans of the Robsoul or Money $sex sound, it then gets a lo-slung, slo-mo disco makeover by local cat Tender T: on his Lange Leve Garden-tolking mix. A more direct dancefloor oriented deep-house rendition by HK on his Heartbreak Remix equally inoresses . The final track (on the flip) is another original offering in the form of "Jailhouse", a bouncy yet emotive Stateside perspective of the classic house sound.

Review: One of the richest, soulful voices in the European jazz, Biondi regularly works with the likes of Incognito. The High Five Quintet complements his delivery well with a Pimptones style soft-jazz structure but plenty of rhythmic welly. For a little more house and a little less jazz, flip for Opolopo's remix. Weighty and club-ready but with Mario's full vocal still intact, it's yet another notch in Opolopo's award-worthy remix bedpost

  3. Louis Mc Guire - "Buffeting Tuft"
Review: From the label: When trends in music can come and go in the blink of an eye, ten years is a long time to stay relevant, passionate and real on the frontline. From its roots in the Parisian club scene by way of its spiritual home at Fuse in Brussels and so on to the globe-trotting, multi-faceted entity that it is today, Lessizmore is living proof of how to do a decade right. The fundamental heartbeat of this European house and techno institution is the maverick music that its affiliated artists make. Of course what the label sounds like now is not necessarily what the label sounded like back in 2006, but it's telling that some of the original characters are still with the label to this day, while many are long time members of the LIZM family that have joined the ranks over the years. In piecing together this compilation, the idea from label founders Jessica Bossuyt and Pierre Noisiez was simply to represent where their brainchild is at right now, from guests at their events in the early days to more recent collaborators of all kinds. Kicking off the first EP, the finest slithers of percussion and whispers of icy soul weave their way into the sublime, sprawling concoction that Birdsmakingmachine delivers, shifting drum sounds across eleven minutes of delicate yet irresistible groove. Meanwhile on the B-side long time champion of future-minded dub techno Deadbeat creates something of an anthem for the label, turning out an energised workout laden with psychedelic swirls of delay and embellished with a catchy vocoder hook. Recent Lessizmore signing Louis McGuire delves into his lowslung MPC-powered bag of tricks and drops another crucial slab of swinging funk that finds the up and coming artist turning to a moodier sound palette customized for the deepest corners of the night.

"Echo Loves Narcissus (part 1)" dominates the A-side with a mighty, steel-cut groove that oozes a certain 90s nostalgia without sounding stale or overworked; the tune's punchy bass-weight and cosmic melodies make for the perfect combo. On the flip, "Get The Love" takes inspiration from the 80s EBM movement while still holding down a fine-ass house groove complete with sexy vocals and warehouse bleeps for all rave purposes...

Review: The third in a series of anonymous Black Boxx EPs has been released on Scott Ferguson's Ferrispark with this issue delivering a various ensemble of house sounds. "Track 1" opens with reverberant warehouse beats that soften to the sound of chiming chords and breathy textures that are whisked into a windy circuitous rhythm by a fluttering bass synth. Loose claps and possible samples of a lazy session drummers loop create a lucid and bodily groove in "Track 2", as delayed piano keys and a sustaining lead softly ebb and flow, while a filtered acid lead takes over in "Track 3". Grooves are smooth travelling in "Track 4" with the main component of the woozy sequence a filter that drops in and out of a looping deepness. Deep and sample heavy house catered for the dancefloor.

Review: Scott Ferguson's highly collectable and mysterious concept was a seriously hot ticket with total anonymity running through the early releases. This ensured the full focus was on the vibes, grooves and dancefloor. Now, three years after the second EP 3, he gives the project one final hoorah with a signature range of physical late night styles. Ranging from smoky, slo-mo hypnotically plodding soul of "Track One" to all-out acid frazzles of "Track Three", it's a fittingly broad and on-point way to end a great concept series.

  4. Tortuga (Valet remix)
Review: Following the critical success of last years mini-LP The Last Tortuga, Black Deer is back on Emotional Response with a 4 track remix EP featuring friends and alumni Nacho Patrol, Luke Wyatt, Sad City and Valet. William Burnett returns to the label in the form of a remixes EP that takes his original productions and hands it to a broad selection of today's finest electronic producers, plus a rare outing from one of the label's favourite pyschedelic experimentalists. While Danny Wolfer's Legowelt project needs little introduction, it was only right that his inclusion on the label came from a more cosmic outlook. With must have EPs and a long player offered, his afro-infused Nacho Patrol moniker is a must check. In Circle Dance the original is taken by the hand down to an afro-tech-funk'n'breaks basement for one of his best remixes to date and rightly so for one of his old buds. Luke Wyatt follows with an uplifting and warped retake on Meditation. The kraut influence of the original is built on with fuzz guitar and a solo that builds across the track to a higher peak. Play this at sunrise for reaffirmation of life itself. Next is a big favourite of the label, catching the ear from his first release on Underwater Peoples
and a lush follow up for Phonica. His pure ambience of a remix strips everything back and lets the 4th World shine. With a 2nd EP due on Phonica, look out for something on this label soon. Finally, one of the main influences on the label when it started a few years back. Valet aka Portland multi-instrumentalist and mum, Honey Owens offers a deep, beautiful and haunting retake, adding whispers, drones, guitar, toms, keys and intonations to swallow you whole.

Firefly EP (12")
Cat: SAT 019. Rel: 28 Jul 14
  1. Firefly
  2. Morning Comes (feat Leah Lazonick)
  3. Black Bricks
  4. Screws In My Head
Review: For some grungy vocal house music with a touch of Chicago percussion and a healthy splash of the indie-synth wave that came crashing over electronic music in the late 2000s, Scissor & Thread's Black Light Smoke might be 2014's answer to Danton Eeprom circa 2009. We say Danton Eeprom, as the voice on the B2, "Screws In My Head", has a similar tone and enunciation of the Frenchman, or are we getting mixed up with Mathew Dear? The title-track, "Firefly", brings back memories of Azari & III's debut EP only with druggy vocals coming from what could be the basement of a DFA rave in New York, while "Morning Comes" borrows some cowbells from The Rapture and sultry French inspirations from Jane Birken. "Black Bricks" then provides some slo-mo, lo-fi phase filtered house - and one hell of a bassline. Alternative electronics for the indie lover

High Cutz (12")
Cat: TOYT 077. Rel: 24 Jan 18
  1. Black Soul (5:45)
  2. Oh, Baby (6:34)
  3. Bang The Dancefloor (6:25)
  4. The Flame (6:36)
Review: For their first release of 2018, Toy Tonics stalwarts Black Loops is joined in the studio by fellow Italian producer Innocent Soul, head honcho of the recently launched Strictly Street Sounds imprint. The EP's four tracks offer a perfect blend of the former's groovy, chunky deep house sound and the sample-heavy, Chicago-inspired disco-house jams favoured by the latter. Highlights include "Black Soul", a funk-fuelled peak-time jam rich in Hamilton Bohannon style guitar loops and elastic bass guitar samples, the James Brown break-fired weightiness of "Bang the Dancefloor" and the squidgy deep house funk of "The Flame", which boasts a particularly rush-inducing breakdown.

  1. Black Meteoric Star - "Unearthed Arcana" (17:43)
  2. Lorna Dune - "Reflux" (5:40)
  3. J Slusher - "Night Train" (8:28)
Review: The second volume of Bushwick Is Melting features original unreleased material by Brooklyn-based producers Black Meteoric Star, Lorna Dune, and J. Slusher. Gavin Russom apparently has a new Black Meteoric Start LP on the way and we can't wait based on the epic, sweeping grandness that is the 18 minute A-side hogger "Unearthed Arcana" which is quite hypnotic when in full flight. The B-side finds Lorna Dune putting her experiments with the piano to one side to focus on some celestial house moves with "Reflux" which will appeal to fans of Legowelt's more star gazing moments whilst the wonderfully named J. Slusher closes out the record with the face melting techno cut "Night Train".
