Review: Modelmaker is a new London label from the collective minds of Dan Berkson and James What. The esteemed house duo has long been garnishing a range of international imprints with their inventive analogue house and techno sounds, but now they are focussing on their own outlet. Initially launching with a couple of self penned EPs, release number three will be the pair's long-time-in-the-making debut album, and after that a considered selection of other talents will join the ranks as the label pushes on. Always primarily focussed on machine made, texturally rich house and techno, each release will come with unique artwork based on works from What's great grandfather, Conrad Felixmuller, who was a well known German expressionist.

Aura (1-sided screen-printed 180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ZEN 12463. Rel: 11 Aug 17
  1. Aura (12" mix) (7:25)
Review: Since announcing their debut album on UK institution Ninja Tune earlier this year, Irish duo Bicep present the first single from the album in the form of title track "Aura". Said to have been created via a series of accidents while experimenting with a new studio setup, the track finally came together through trial and error and here is the wonderful result. A dark and sexy serving of dancefloor drama featuring 'hands in the air' style vintage synth melodies, life affirming strings and immaculate drum programming. It is sure to be one of 'those' tracks you're going to be hearing a lot of in the latter part of 2017 and beyond.

  3. Bloodline
Review: FXHE bloodline member Big Strick continues to excel on his own 7 Days Ent. label, dropping his first 12" of 2012 which has a nice community feel to proceedings. Alpha & Omega introduces us to Generation Next, a rising 16 year old talent from the streets of Detroit who contributes alongside Mr Strickland to all three tracks here. Stylistically, the three tracks here seem equally indebted to Juan Atkins pure techno endeavours as Infiniti and the sub aqueous grooves of Drexciya, not least the restrained title track which shimmers from the murky depths into a finely crafted liquid groove imbued with bubbling elatory Utopian textures. On the flip "Origin" ripples with pressure, its rhythmic elements grappling for your attention as the space between them decreases with Strick and Gen Next expertly layering texture upon texture. A masterful 12" shaped exercise in modern day Detroit sounds is completed with the devious electrofied snap of "Bloodline".

Review: One of the richest, soulful voices in the European jazz, Biondi regularly works with the likes of Incognito. The High Five Quintet complements his delivery well with a Pimptones style soft-jazz structure but plenty of rhythmic welly. For a little more house and a little less jazz, flip for Opolopo's remix. Weighty and club-ready but with Mario's full vocal still intact, it's yet another notch in Opolopo's award-worthy remix bedpost

  2. Get The Love (10:58)
Review: West End Records? What's that? This is Bitter End and you're in for some lush disco rhythms with this new badboy from the imprint's mysterious movers and shakers! "Echo Loves Narcissus (part 1)" dominates the A-side with a mighty, steel-cut groove that oozes a certain 90s nostalgia without sounding stale or overworked; the tune's punchy bass-weight and cosmic melodies make for the perfect combo. On the flip, "Get The Love" takes inspiration from the 80s EBM movement while still holding down a fine-ass house groove complete with sexy vocals and warehouse bleeps for all rave purposes...

Review: Brian Cullen's Bjak project provides the learned house producer with a chance to reach dizzying, transcendental heights through a hazy, soul and jazz indebted approach as spiritual as it is groove-oriented. Having previously charmed the likes of Deep Explorer and Eargasmic, the debut Bjak album now lands on sympathetic Swiss outpost deepArtSounds, where Cullen will be keeping fine company with the likes of Ron Trent, Above Smoke, Trinidadian Deep and many more. It's a sumptuous listen overflowing with buttery keys, smoky trumpets and expressive, organic rhythms to get all true-school deep house heads nodding with approval. Just check the beatbox flow of "Groove Train" with its canny fusion of ear-catching sampling and accomplished musicianship.

  1. I Need A Dollar (Tensnake remix)
Review: This week's lesson in simple musical mathematics is demonstrated by Tensnake and Aloe Blacc. The former's inexorable rise in 2010 has perhaps been matched by the worldwide popularity of the latter's "I Need A Dollar", so getting Mr Niemerski on board to remix the track was a smart move. The end results are typically appealing, with Blacc's vocals looped brilliantly around a burning deep house arrangement that peaks in all the right places. The central energetic pulse of cavernous bass stabs and slick hi-hats are inundated by massive swathes of soaring chords as the track progresses, with the requisite breakdowns augmented by choral vocal refrains. Totally euphoric in its intentions and execution, this is bound to have devastating effects when implemented at the right time.

  2. Track 2
  3. Track 3
  4. Track 4
Review: The third in a series of anonymous Black Boxx EPs has been released on Scott Ferguson's Ferrispark with this issue delivering a various ensemble of house sounds. "Track 1" opens with reverberant warehouse beats that soften to the sound of chiming chords and breathy textures that are whisked into a windy circuitous rhythm by a fluttering bass synth. Loose claps and possible samples of a lazy session drummers loop create a lucid and bodily groove in "Track 2", as delayed piano keys and a sustaining lead softly ebb and flow, while a filtered acid lead takes over in "Track 3". Grooves are smooth travelling in "Track 4" with the main component of the woozy sequence a filter that drops in and out of a looping deepness. Deep and sample heavy house catered for the dancefloor.

Review: Scott Ferguson's highly collectable and mysterious concept was a seriously hot ticket with total anonymity running through the early releases. This ensured the full focus was on the vibes, grooves and dancefloor. Now, three years after the second EP 3, he gives the project one final hoorah with a signature range of physical late night styles. Ranging from smoky, slo-mo hypnotically plodding soul of "Track One" to all-out acid frazzles of "Track Three", it's a fittingly broad and on-point way to end a great concept series.

  1. Black Meteoric Star - "Unearthed Arcana" (17:43)
  2. Lorna Dune - "Reflux" (5:40)
  3. J Slusher - "Night Train" (8:28)
Review: The second volume of Bushwick Is Melting features original unreleased material by Brooklyn-based producers Black Meteoric Star, Lorna Dune, and J. Slusher. Gavin Russom apparently has a new Black Meteoric Start LP on the way and we can't wait based on the epic, sweeping grandness that is the 18 minute A-side hogger "Unearthed Arcana" which is quite hypnotic when in full flight. The B-side finds Lorna Dune putting her experiments with the piano to one side to focus on some celestial house moves with "Reflux" which will appeal to fans of Legowelt's more star gazing moments whilst the wonderfully named J. Slusher closes out the record with the face melting techno cut "Night Train".

Review: It was way back in 1994 when the Black Science Orchestra - AKA Ashley Beedle, Uschi Classen and Marc Woolford - first released the Altered States EP. As this timely reissue on Groovin' proves, it remains a benchmark of British deep house. The EP is arguably most famous for the Wood, Brass & Steel-sampling brilliance of "New Jersey Deep" - a track that should reside in any house-head's collection - though the similarly-minded laidback positivity of "Philadelphia" (whose swinging drums, toasty electric piano chords and rising synthesized horns pay hearty tribute to Philly Soul) pushes it close. The EP also includes a tasty "Drumadelphia" version of the latter track for DJs who like to play around with percussion, while "Vario (SOS)" is an organ-rich trip into hazy lounge music territory.

Review: A true Chicago treat; Rick Lenoir returns to some of his most seminal cuts from the early 90s with brand new extensions and versions that have never been released before. "Climax" is a blueprint techno jam laced with acid and humanised textures that stimulate in every direction while "Doctor's Housecall" hits with a shuffled jacking funk groove that kicks like Chicago but vibes like Jersey or NYC in spirit. The B-side is all about the breaks as "Your Mind Is So Crazy" shakes up the party with a swollen riff that bounces from side to side before "Retrospace" dusts off the bleep machine for a mischievous rolling frolic in acid. Over 25 years old and still on point.

  1. B-Ultras
  2. Neu Beat
  3. B-Ultras (Jamie Paton remix)
Review: Collaborations are often the fortune of timing. With Andy having moved on since closing the Dissident label to launching his Cave Paintings project to Tim's departure from Battant and striking out as Andrew Weatherall's engineer and soon to be co-member of The Asphodells, an alliance was born between the two to undertake a series of live jam sessions at each's respective studios. A love of new wave, new beat, UK Bleep and Detroit techno all feature in B-Ultras and the aptly titled, Neu Beat. Both cuts are heavily soaked in the pitch black, smoke machine funk and strob-laden fug of Andy's (and co-hort Joe Hart) infamous World Unknown dancefloor. Running at around 10 minutes the tracks are essentially an examination of acid house's ideals. Clattering hats, throbbing basslines, stabbing keys and doses of 303. Keeping it pretty simple but all about a pure groove on and on. Backing these up is a remix of B-Ultras from Jamie Paton that accentuates the groove and drags the acid deeper down to some B-boy Dub throwdown - with more to follow from all protagonists in 2014.

All bubbles and strings, "Stomp 5" fuses disco with Chi-town to great filtered effect. Coming on strong like 1999 Roule record, there's a deep infectiousness in its loopy wizardry. 3. Locate Yourself
Review: Ian Blevins has been busy making a name for himself on ESP Institute and Futureboogie, but now he comes to Not An Animal with a slightly different approach that still speaks to the skills the upstart producer has in his sonic arsenal. "The Birds" is a focused, steady-tracking cut for the deeper end of the night, but there's some serious weight in those drums and the heavily processed vocal snippets pack plenty of malaise. Man Power then step up with a "Tropical Bastard" remix of the original, cracking the curtains to allow a little light into the mix but stopping short of over-cooking the mood. "Locate Yourself" on the flip finds Blevins in tracky techno mode, and it turns out it's a style he can nail just as easily as the more organic tones he's known for.

The first side of this 12" finds the two label bosses twisting out immaculate jams shot through with playful sound design. Immersive and captivating, it's the perfect set opener that allows you to take any direction you wish. First up is the deep down and dirty electro house of "Stop" featuring gritty synth arpeggios, dusty drums and sleazy vocals.
