The star of the show, in our opinion, is 'For The Love Of Hunice', which offers a comparatively mellow, instrumental Hammond organ purr set to funk. Ethel Lindsey's soothing vocals blend seamlessly with the rhythm section, making this rendition feel both familiar and unique. Review: On a new compilation, 180g Japan zero in on a distinct '60s movement in soul jazz, tracking the development of the genre across improbably vast Pacific waters, from the United States to Japan. Rocketing to prominence in Japan after Nippon Columbia upheld contracts with US labels the likes of Buddah and Blue Thumb Records - in turn spurring sax player and NC label head Jiro Inagaki to release such music as Gladys Knight and Curtis Mayfield in conjunction with Japanese counterparts, such as Tan Tan, Kenji Niinuma, Masaaki Sakai and Mieko Hirota - the music you hear here is a dense and perhaps still untapped look at the ingenuity of transmarine soul-jazz. The target locale here is Tokyo's Akasaka neighbourhood: not only was it the hub and hotspot of soul jazz in Japan, but it was also the first municipality to host a discotheque in all of Japan. Most of these recordings were not previously available outside of the nation, marking a Pandora's lid opened on a crock of sweetly produced, brightly lit, downbeat soul delights.

Review: Smouldering Secrets was released in 1975 by Copeland Davis and his band and it's a great example of his energetic piano performances. The album opens with the melodic 'No Arms Can Ever Hold You' while tracks like 'Perfidy' and 'So in Love' feature lively instrumentals. Highlights include the soulful 'Jet,' where Davis sings, and the mellow 'Morning Spring,' famously sampled by Nujabes. This reissue also includes the vocal version of 'No Arms Can Ever Hold You' which makes its debut release on vinyl. Davis later gained popularity in Japan during the Free Soul and Rare Groove movements which is why this rich record one is being put out by P-Vine.

A brightly-lit phono-phenom made up of eight, fully stereo-spanned tracks, Aran's third outing heard the veteran Japanese lyricist and songwriter bring a brash verve to the then-nascent sound, resulting in all manner of sheer guitar and vocal driven tomfoolery. Though city pop had been around for a while by the turn of the 80s, this record was known as one of the first to incorporate "experimental sounds".

Review: In the early 80s, Chicago-based funk band Southside Movement teamed up with soul singer Jackie Ross who was already well known for her work with Chess and Brunswick. Though this collaboration produced incredible music, it was largely forgotten since only a few test pressings existed so it never spread too far. However, in 2023, P-VINE reissued their only full-length album on vinyl for the first time and now, the standout track from their partnership, 'You Are The One That I Need' comes on its own special 7" which is the first time it has been available in this format. It's a wonderful and previously long-lost collaboration that is well deserving of your attention.
