  1. I Go Boom
  2. Button Moon
  3. Oversize Clip
  4. Melody Maker
Review: More body slamming material here from Addison Groove. Direct dancefloor business, the title track "I Go Boom" shakes and sasses with a tight dancehall stomp that's balanced beautifully with soft minor keys in a way that DJ Gregory might have done back in the day (only a lot heavier). "Button Moon" takes the heaviness level up several notches with more steppy beats and a fine acid house flavour. "Oversize Clip", meanwhile, nods to the dubstep heads with a deep and minimal 808 riddim. "Melody Maker" finishes the show on a deeper note. Timeless, jacking and sweetened with a sexy groove, Addison Groove can do no wrong right now.

  2. Elastic (3:16)
  3. Sam Binga & Deft - "Steppin" (feat Redders) (2:45)
  4. Chasic (3:50)
Review: Binga and Redders join forces once again for a unique hybrid of digi-dub, dancehall and D&B. "Tek Nah Chat" is spacey, gritty and primed for the dance as both characters' unique styles complement each other with physical rawness that no other producer/MC combo can boast (with, perhaps, the exception of Phizzy and Strategy) Further on we get all tripped out by the bending toplines and woozy synths of "Elastic", we get pranged out by the late night future grime "Steppin" and get thrusted back to the oldest of schools with the rampant jungle homage "Chasic". Not a dull moment, Binga is in a league of his own right now.

  4. Off Freakmode
  5. Suck It Deep
  6. Hoodrat
Review: DJ Deeon's visceral productions and stripped back approach date back to Dancemania's mid '90s output and have helped set the very foundations for the footwork movement that continues to soundtrack the best parties today. Often x-rated and always physical, his analogue magic still sounds as dark and direct as it did 20 years ago. This Freakmode EP sees Chiwax pick through Deeon's 94-96 archives, and highlights include the switchy/facsimile-seducing title track, the outrageously sleazy sentiments of "Yo Mouf" and the tight kick drum dynamics of "Hoodrat". Never subtle, always solid, Deeon we salute you.

Cat: TTE 002. Rel: 23 May 17
  1. On Point (4:08)
  2. Museling (4:21)
Review: New Berlin beat explorers Through These Eyes continue to forage into new spaces with exciting new talents. This time we're treated to tones from NYC/Vancouver deepsmiths Folding City who proceed to take us into their darkest depths and most uplifting heights. "On Point" is an acidic slow jam that stomps with grunt and weight you'd expect to hear in a dBridge set. "Museling" continues the halftime-ish beat fusion but with hazy R&B vocal textures and lilting guitars that give just enough sparkle and sense of restrained hope. Understated, heavy and different; There's a lot going on right here.

Cat: TTE 004. Rel: 21 May 18
  1. Herb Dub (5:37)
  2. Glitch War (6:16)
Review: Jittering jitterbugs captain: Through These Eyes let rip with another run of their fourth release "Herb Dub / Glitch War". Yet another future-fixated excursion from the vinyl-only label, courtesy of German bredrin Ill K, both cuts will stun you with their drum weavery; "Herb Dub" swaggers with a Dub Phizix-style halftime before leaping into staccato step session that drills and purrs at the same time. "Glitch War" turns distortion into an art before getting jiggy with a wood block snare and more alien noises than mankind usually comfortable with. Don't dilly dally.

  1. Eyesdontlie
  2. Body Touch
Review: Machinedrum heralds his next album on new home Ninja Tune with the Eyesdontlie single, introducing the Vapor City concept the producer said was inspired by a recurring dream . Fans of his stellar 2011 album Room(s) will be glad to hear his signature sound incorporating footwork and more experimental elements is still intact, though the lead track here seems steeped in dreamier textures. The B-side track "Body Touch" however is a different beast, harking back to his earlier hip hop-inspired productions. An excellent single that bodes well for the album...

  2. Fabulous Fred
  3. Jack
  4. Natty
Review: Pritchard's contemporary jungle joint has been on heavy rotation since the festival season, and it's not hard to see why. Jumping and jittering around 20th Century Steel Band's 'everyone's got to make a living' sample, it screams at the past, present and future in equal measure. Elsewhere he conjures up the ghosts of LFO on "Fabulous Fred", we get all frenetic and footwork on "Jack" while "Natty" brings us full circle with a subversive amen-heavy jungle basher. Some of us work in an office to make a living. Some of us drive a van. Mark Pritchard, however, makes seriously next level sounds.

Review: Schockglatze is a long standing collaboration between artists working across several disciplines. With audio-visual performances, band projects and international exhibitions thus far, they have been causing a stir within the art and music worlds. Spank has already collaborated with a range of acclaimed vocalists, including Warrior Queen, Sensational and Christoph Waltz. As a competent producer, he forms the solid basis for the studio productions of Schockglatze. Nik Nowak has attracted international attention with his mobile sound sculptures and worked with Chicago footwork pioneers like (the late) DJ Rashad and DJ Spinn as well as Kevin Martin aka The Bug. Graphic artist, VJ and video director Moritz Stumm aka Ultramoodem brings to the project an 'inimitable rhythmicity' while creating a singular technique of audio-visual effects: the aesthetic of which has become a signature style of the collective.

  3. Brain Music (Slick Shoota remix)
  4. Wet (House Of Black Lanterns remix)
Review: Skubi steps into the limelight with his debut release for Modern Ruin, an imprint reserved strictly for the finest in footwork killers. "Brain Music" is basically a modern hip-hop lick with cavernous low-ends and that familiar juke vocal stutter. The same goes for "Wet", a relatively darker, dreamier sort of affair. Remixes comes from none other than Slick Shoota and House Of Black Lanterns, the former opting for a jungle swing while the latter twists and funks that juke into an even nuttier bundle of drums and percussion. Large.

  2. Dagger (Desto remix)
Review: SLV comprises Shanghai producer Downstate and Tokyo-based Hamacide. While the title of their debut release "Dagger" suggests sharp, cut-throat riddims, there's a much softer, richer sound amidst their slo-mo trappisms. Think Bassnectar's early material. Think Moby. Think beautiful. For something much sharper head to Desto's remix. Upping the tempo with footwork fury, it's the perfect foil to the title's dreamy dedication.

  7. Train To Lodz (5:15)
Review: Tagged as 'juke', Surly's second release to date is much more grounded in jazz and hard bop. The Polish newcomer has impressed with this release so far, taking traditional visions of the genre onto new and exciting territories that have been explored only superficially over the last decade. What is most special about the tunes on Trip To Warsaw is how genuine they sound and feel. For most wannabe jazz musicians, the vibe can feel a little forced at time, but Surly's methods of instrumentation feel as natural around drum machines and synths as they would do around a 5-piece band with brass, piano, bass and wind instruments. This really is a trip in every sense of the word, and it might just well be the release of the month from us. Warmly recommended.

Review: Stepping up with his second album for 50 Weapons, Addison Groove is once again mining the rhythmic excitement of juke and footwork and working it into his blue-hued melodic headspace. Standout vocal cut '"Just You" is a prime example of the upbeat flavour across the album, while "11th" matches the plush harmonies with moodier switch-ups, and "The Spirit Level" drops the tempo into a house bump that lends itself to the illustrious synth sweeps. Typically though the beats are in that twitchy middle ground between dubstep and footwork, leaving plenty of space for razor-sharp constructions and dazzling edits as best demonstrated on the dynamic acid roll of "Space Apples". Chaos abounds on the B Side where Developer's frantic side is shown via "Promiscuous" whilst the tightly wound "Pulstar" is quite hypnotic.

Review: The fledgling DJ Paypal joins the likes of Lapalux, Martyn and Mr Oizo on the mighty Brainfeeder, and he does so with his inimitable blend of footwork-driven electronica, and mind-bending pseudo house. This extended EP features nine solid dance bruisers, starting with the jazzy drum rolls of "Ahhhhhhh" that fuse neatly into the likes of "Awakening", a gorgeous piece of nu jazz complete with the sexiest trumpets we've heard in a while, and "Sold Out" itself, a delightfully bumpy ride along a rollercoaster of percussion and starry melodies. This is jazz for the next millennium.

Afterlife gathers together a collection of DJ Rashad tracks co-produced by Rashad's close friends and associates, including DJ Spinn, Traxman, DJ Manny and more. As the label themselves state, this 14 track album really conveys the wealth of musical influences and knowledge Rashad possessed with soul, hip-hop, house, techno and many more all brought together at 160 BPM. "Afterlife is our tribute to our friend and our inspiration. Rest In Peace DJ Rashad," Teklife write. Enough said. A must for all fans of Rashad.

Review: Brighton-based synth-step explorer Alan Myson is nothing if not prolific; Nebula Dance is his third full-length in five years. Like previous excursions, Nebula Dance sees him attempting to join the dots between dubstep rhythms, synth-wave melodies, clattering IDM grooves and the shimmering sweeps of classic electronica. It's a sound dripping with positivity, and the result is an album that somehow manages to sound both self-consciously grandiose and impressively intimate. Tracks like "Intercruise" and "Glokk" bristle with retina-sharp melodies and glistening electronics, all atop rhythms that are seemingly pulling you in different directions. It's a delicious combination, that's for sure.

Review: Wow, this is quite some album from Planet Mu! You may not be so familiar with Jlin, a footwork producer with a couple of contributions to the second Bangs & Works compilation Planet Mu released, but the Indiana based artist is quite the talent on the basis of Dark Energy. Jlin has gone on record to say this album has been in gestation from some time and explores darker themes than you would usually get on a footwork album. There's a real confidence to her productions at times on this album, "Black Diamond" in particular has a wonderful swagger to its syncopation, and in "Expand" Jlin offers an intriguing collaboration with RVNG Intl's resident voice manipulator Holly Herndon.

Review: After his Room(s) long player for Planet Mu confirmed him as an unsung hero amongst US beatsmiths, Travis Stewart follows up that gargantuan effort with this turn for Ninja Tune. It's a deeply atmospheric album that works Stewart's palpable love of jungle breaks into richly atmospheric pieces that move through sometimes mournful, sometimes dreamlike spaces that hang together like all the pieces of a creative puzzle should. At times the tone is blissful, as on "Center Your Love", while the immaculate breaks give way to strung out coldwave balladry on "U Still Lie". His sense of adventure as intact as ever, Stewart happily follows up such contemplation with the feisty tech-step precision of "Eyesdontlie", ensuring there's never a dull moment across the ten tracks.

Review: In the three years since the release of his last full-length as Machinedrum, Vapor City, Travis Stewart seems to have done some soul-searching. Whereas that set was a punchy and occasionally punishing mixture of juke, D&B, and UK garage sounds, Human Energy looks towards new age sounds and ideas for inspiration. Of course, Stewart hasn't completely abandoned skittish rhythms and bass music influences, it's just that these come wrapped in cheery, off-kilter synthesizer melodies, sparkling electronic flourishes, and repeated nods towards ambient, R&B and experimental synth-pop. As a result, it's a hugely entertaining and imaginative set, with just enough club-ready fodder to keep DJs happy.
