Review: Brooklyn record distributor Atypical-dopeness offer the next edition in Joaquin Joe Claussell's Unofficial Edits & Overdubs series. Following a four-tracker of largely unnamed tracks released in 2020, Iboga continues the series, this time with an iterative avatar to top up Claussell's ever-moving house continuum. Claussell's output has lately taken on an ancestral turn, influenced by the hallucinations caused by chewing the roots of an iboga plant, a chemico-spiritual fixture of initiation ceremonies found across Central Africa (whether Claussell actually did take ibogaine isn't clear). What we do know is that, in dialogue with his heritage, Claussell found himself inspired by these initiatory rituals and so set about producing this eleven-track heart-rouser, fusing the overdubbed recorded sounds of Gabon, Cameroon and Congo with his own summative, spiritual, salubrious house sound.

Review: The Vessel Recordings Group label is headed up by Ira James who has shown he has great taste when it comes to tapping into global house sounds. This new EP is another standout with Toronto talent Demuir behind the beats. He brings his signature mix of influxes to this one starting with 'Conversing With Angels' which has disco-tinged loops and soulful, feel-good vibes that liven up any party. 'Everynight' has a deep cut and funky groove that is made all the more arresting and emotive with the vocals and smart synth filters, while 'Mizz Hunni' comes as a hefty tech stomper and also as a dub.

Review: If you like your disco, funk and soul edits noodly, low-slung and spiritual, consider your options no further than Dave Maze's D&E imprint. Homegrown in Chicago - long fecundated Midwestern ground for all things dignified dance music - Maze cultivated D&E out of the local rare groove and soulful house scene in the city, going on to sign many an eminent on the circuit. But it's Maze himself here who shines, slaying the Minotaur to master a labyrinthine haul of tracks complementing an initial two 'Disco Yams' from October: these are root veg, groove prize-winners, plucked from the ground. Uncanny strings and digital disco progressions make for a rarely cold, inorchestral movement on the A, which develops quite assuredly.

Review: French label Skylax is back with a new outing from Italian maestro Blue Mondays whose The Homage EP not only pays tribute to the golden age of Italo disco but also embodies the essence of raw, visceral proto-house, championed by legends like Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy. In the opener, Blue Mondays crafts a journey into Italo's heart that honours the pioneers with his own twist. The instrumental version adds pure musicality, letting beats and melodies shine while on the B-side, 'Countach (Driving Mix)' channels classic Italo's driving energy, then 'Strangers from the Past (Vocal Mix)' draws from new wave influences to skillfully bridge past and present.

Review: For the latest offshoot of his ongoing 'unofficial edits and overdubs' rework project, New York house/disco mainstay Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell has decided to turn his hand to "African classics', delivering what he describes as "psychedelic takes". On this EP, the first of two, the Body & Soul NYC resident offers up extended revisions of a quartet of cuts. He begins with 'New Africa', wrapping a gorgeous sand gently soulful vocal workout in spacey synths and layers of spiritual house percussion, before upping the tempo on the breathless and brilliant 'Griot Ba'. His love of deep, dubby basslines, restless percussion and delay-laden vocal snippets comes to the fore on EP highlight 'The Ya Yo People', whjle 'Drum Sore' - a version of what sounds like an early to mid 1980s number - very much lives up to its name.

Review: US house mainstay Delano Smith has always operated at the dubber, more stripped-back and techno-leaning end of the spectrum. He is a master of crafting perfect loops that could roll for days a never grow dull. The full extent of that skill was laid bare on his wonderful album An Odyssey, which turns 20 in 2025. He has long been close to Sushitech who now reissue it in a very limited run on a special gold slab of wax. The tunes are heady, lo-fi, grainy and gorgeous sounds for warm-ups, zone-outs and plenty of the more discerning and intimate moments in between.

Review: Body & Soul NYC resident Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell has launched a new series, 'Iboga' - an extension of his 'unofficial edits and overdubs' project focused on "psychedelic takes" on "African classics". He begins EP number two with 'Abuja Rough', a rolling, lightly housed-up take on a lesser-known mid-80s Afro-synth-pop number, before ratcheting up the tempo, intensity and percussive pressure on 'Summer Africa'. He successfully straightens out and beefs up an organ-rich Afronbeat workoput on 'People', while standout 'Afrikan Basement' is a lightly dubbed-out chunk of densely percussive Afro-house topped off with effects-laden vocals and sax solos.

Review: US veteran JT Donaldson makes the sort of killer tech house that immediately makes you want to move. This time out the Dallas, Texas resident lands on Dolfin Records with a deeper sound that is raw and heavy. 'Choose' rides on knackered-sounding kick with just deft synth smears for company. 'Don't Sweat' has a double-time rhythm with sombre chords adding the soul and 'Want Her Around' gets the hips swinging with its lovely claps, muted, softly glowing sustained synths and lumpy deep house drums. Flipping the script yet again. 'Sunday Drive' is a more nimble and jazzy dancer and 'Take 2' is a sunny house sound with hints of Metro Area nu-disco synth magic and a big fat bassline.

Review: P-Bar resident Paramida returns to her Love On The Rocks imprint with a selection of dream-inducing productions, ranging in tone from 90s-leaning dancefloor material to blissful Balearic soundscapes. The Berlin-based DJ, producer and scene figurehead routinely delivers with her studio output, and Devil's Destination is precisely as on-point as one might expect. Tripped-out vocals echo over floating pads, psychedelic bleeps and rolling drums, eventually giving way to a fierce kick as the energy dramatically shifts. French mavericks E-Talking join the party on the throbbing tech-funk of On Process, with gated pads, sturdy bass and conga-led percussion. Evergreen UK producer Mathew Jonson takes the cut into techier territory, before the celestial swells of Sayonara wave us off into the balmy sunset.

Review: Watersheds of feel-good house and gloss-talgic beats abound on Sofia Kourtesis’ new album Volver, out now via Ninja Tune. Written between Berlin and Lima, it’s the producer and DJ's most vibrant and politically charged work yet, billed as a dedication to trans women and queer communities fighting for survival under corrupt healthcare systems in Latin America. Laid throughout with rousing spoken-work samples calling for street protest and revolutions of everyday life, this is a modern summer house record with a reinstallation of the same sense of political urgency inscribed in much New York ballroom and early deep house. Kourtesis likens its creation to an Almodóvar film: chaotic, painful, and joy-soaked, recorded while juggling the whopping combo of world tours, grassroots activism, the care of her mother, and medical school. Lead single ‘Unidos’ is a kinetic collaboration with Daphni aka Dan Snaith, notably marking his first release under that alias with another artist.

Review: Texas-based Ben Hixon and Atlanta's Stefan Ringer collide on this new split EP for the increasingly vital Dolfin label. It is Ringer who starts with a tight, grinding groove on 'Moving Walkway' with spoken word snippets and kaleidoscopic synth sequences bringing a trippy and unusual energy to the menacing bass. His 'PLGLY' (SR Big Room mix) is then a heavy beatdown with synths that snap and crack while jazzy percussion and dark vocals bring extra character. Hixon's 'Feels Extremely Good' is a busy, off-balance mix of deep house drums and mind-melting synth refrains while 'My Family' offer a blissed-out and soul-drenched closer.

Review: Happy 40th birthday to TRAX Records, the imprint that arguably did more than any other to spread the sound of Chicago house around the world in the 80s and early 90s. This anniversary EP gathers together a mix of stone cold classics, obscurities and more recent gems. So while there's a chance to savour remastered versions of early house classics by Frankie Knuckles (the simply peerless 'Your Love') and Marshall Jefferson (the piano-powered 'house music anthem' that is the equally brilliant 'Move Your Body'), we also get Willie Wonka's less-celebrated 1986 gem 'What Is House' (featuring a spoken word vocal does a great job in explaining the origins of house music) and the chunkier, more recent Jacques & Gregory and Screamin' Rachael deep house cut 'I'll Take You There'.

Their debut 7" on Touching Bass is limited to 'Belly Dub' and 'OSOTB', the former described as a "Sino-grime" growler whose irascible basses aggress a hearse's load of dragged, druggy drums. On the flip resides 'Osotb', a fluid, aerated, weightless yet somehow paradoxically basement-deep-housey complement.

The Belgian pair of Jean Vanesse and Thomas Sohet really hit on a fresh sound with their blend of electro-deco and deep house and this double pack still sounds hot all these years on. From the mid-tempo and seductive boogie of 'Motown Spring' to the cosmic tech of 'Search Is Over' via the dazzling disco radiance and sleek Metro Area style vibes of 'Rollercoaster', these are sophisticated sounds that marry dancefloor clout with great sound design. Also included is a pulsating disco mix of Pinky Ann Rihal's 'Party Tonight' by Turbotito & Ragz, already spun by the likes of CC:DISCO and Barry Can't Swim. JKriv then twists RD Burman's 'Birth of Shiva' into a house stomper laced with bansuri and squelching bass, while Daniel T. transforms 'Zindagi To Zindagi Hai' into a dubbed-out Bollywood journey.

The record opens with the silky swing of 'Some Things Last Forever', giving way to lush, G-Funk-laced grooves like 'Majestic Fantasies' and club-focused cuts such as 'Unconditional (Club Mix)'. Bryant's vocals glide over Space Ghost's plush instrumentation, with tracks like 'Cheer Me Up' and 'Ultimate Love' channelling UK street soul and the balladry of classic r&b. 'Shine' and 'Ultimate Love', both featuring Morgan, add extra emotional weight. The pair clearly draw from a shared love of Teddy Riley, Jam & Lewis and DeVante Swing, but there's a lightness here that feels rooted in the present too-music that remembers the past without ever getting stuck in it.

Review: Following years spent flitting between labels including Smallville, Closer and Wolf Music Recordings, Sebastian Genz AKA Moomin landed on Turkish imprint Oath four years ago. After a surprise period of silence, he's back on the label with Into The Distance - his first full-length excursion in eight years. Given his impressive track record, it's no surprise to find that he's delivered the goods once more. For proof, check the twinkling pianos, spacey chords and shuffling deep house beats of 'Things Left Behind', the dreamy breakbeat business of 'Into The Distance', the jazzy downtempo deepness of 'Island Dreams', the sun-splashed dancefloor colour of 'A Way Out', and the hushed jazz-house perfection of 'Night Moves'.

Review: The latest VA from Love International's long-running compilation series arrives via London DJ and NTS host Moxie, who lends a fluid, dancefloor-centric touch. Drawn from across the electronic spectrum, the collection swings from dusty groove to percussive pressure without breaking mood. Edinburgh's East Coast Love Affair opens with 'Xylocopa Violacea', all rolling handclaps and dubbed-out organ flourishes. Karizma's 'Kellah' nudges into broken beat territory while Helen Sharpe's 'Got 2 Have Your Love (Jazz Rave Mix)' channels euphoric UK energy into radiant new form. Further in, Lightning Head and Ivan-I & Starchild provide the sun-drenched sway, before 82J6's 'Exercise Life' and Quest's 'Smooth Skin' close things in deep, eyes-shut mode. Though wide-ranging, the curation never feels scattered - Moxie's selections land with poise, each track carrying the warmth and emotional gravity that defines this festival's spirit.

Review: Gold polygon masked producer (only the best of them wear them) Satin Jackets returns with a laid-back blend of lush grooves and breezy melodies, perfectly attuned for moments of ease and escape. Drawing from a string of singles released over recent years since 2010 for the likes of Nu Indee and Eskimo, Cruise Control has an unshakable sense of atmos and rhythm, as a drench of sun washes over each production. The German producer shapes his compositions in solitude before bringing in collaborators who elevate the mood, whether through serendipitous connections with David Bay and Small Black, or the instant spark of a friend's bassline transforming a stuck idea into a standout hook. Listeners often comment on the uplift they feel in his work, and it's clear he prioritises that sense of instant musical chemistry.

Review: The latest 7" from New York producer and long-time spiritual house innovator Joaquin Joe Claussell leans into his cosmic jazz side, offering two fully analogue recordings of 'Dark Rebel'. It's a brand new release, recorded live with no computersijust raw musicianship and hands-on energy. The A-side version stretches into smoky Rhodes licks and rolling percussion, while the B-side strips things down to a tighter, dubbier frame. Released on Sacred Rhythm and Cosmic, this is one for collectors of Claussell's deeper, more improvisational output.

Founded in 2012 as the club-focused sibling to Emotional Response, Especial has become a trusted home for genre-blurring dance music from Jamie Paton's dubwise vision to trance-infused gems by 53X. This celebratory collection release features standout contributions from Alphonse, Chez De Milo, Jonne Lyden and remixes by Paton, whose design and sonic imprint define the label's identity. A heady blend of slow-motion trance, acid dub, rave nostalgia and deep, dubbed-out beats, it distils 12 years of dancefloor devotion into one essential release.

Review: Heads roll, as Lee 'Scratch' Perry's final known recording is revealed to the world, proving fraudulent any would-be counterclaimants to the title. Australian beatmaker Inkswel was the lucky artist to finally hook up with the late Upsetter: originally featured on his 2022 album Chasing Infinity (Cosmocities), the track blends a twisted, beat-boogie-influenced dub vibe with Perry's signature woozy wails. Now fellow progressive house producers James Curd and Sofatalk bring their unique takes across three remixes on fresh 12" vinyl, extending the original mix astride a never-before-heard demo, leaving the door ajar for fans to peek in to the song's making.

Review: Texan deep house stalwart Ben Hixon has been very busy of late, variously serving up EPs of his own and guesting on one by pal (and fellow Dallas resident) J.T Donaldson. Hixon is particularly good at combining analogue electronics (especially vintage drum machine beats) and more organic sounds with lashings of trippy effects and curious samples. He does that masterfully on this four-tracker, skipping between the deep, rolling bass, looped vocal snippets and crunchy beats of 'Get In The Mood', the deep tech-house DJ tool that is 'Drumloop 1', the dusty, minor-key shuffle of title track 'Hustle', and the ultra-deep hypnotism of 'Scared of June'.

Review: Edinburgh's Barry Can't Swim wattles organic textural elements around progressive house and techno emotes, inviting comparisons to Fred Again's pyjama-wearing, electronic cousin. Bursting on to the scene in the early 20s with bedroomy, Bandcamp self-starters like 'Different' and 'I Don't Want To Be Here', the common thread in Barry's oeuvre has become known as one of introspection, isolation and regression to childhood. Loner now hears him delve ever deeper into his establishing unthought known, one of solitary but deep-feeling inner world-building, matching the tremulous intensity of his fluid, jam sesh live shows.

Review: Dallas-based Ben Hixon has long been one of the key contributors to the catalogue of hometown label Dolfin Records, most recently co-producing a swathe of cuts on fellow Texan J.T Donaldson's most recent EP. Here he returns to solo action with a typically assured two-tracker. Check first A-side 'Cuming Inside', where warming Fender Rhodes motifs, squelchy synths, cut-up soul vocal snippets and warming bass cluster around a crunchy drum machine beat and jammed-out melodic motifs. He opts for an even deeper and more alien-sounding construction on flipside 'MMM!', an early morning workout that sounds perfect at that point when minds and bodies are entering the hallucinatory realm.

Review: Legendary Chicago imprint TRAX Records continues to celebrate its 40th birthday, and with it four decades since the earliest house records appeared in Windy City record stores. On this second volume in their celebratory EP series, curator Jorge showcases some of his favourite cuts from the label vaults. First up on side A is Stylophonic's 'Jack It Up', a fine combination of thickset bottom-end and expansive piano solos. It's followed by a stone-cold Windy City classic - Armando's tough 1992 acid-and-organs workout, 'Love In Heart' (originally credited to New World Order, fact fans). Over on the reverse, we're treated to the hands-in-the-air piano house nostalgia of Mark Row and Jame Starck's 'Free Your Mind' and Paul Johnson's superb 2002 disco-house roller, 'Follow This Beat'.

Review: Ira Jame's Vessel Recordings Group comes through with a brilliant selection of remixes of one of the best deep house tunes of the genre's early era. Ron Trent and Chez Damier's 'Don't Try It' is a bumping cut with vibey vocals and steamy synths that rock any party, and here it gets reworked into myriad different moods. There's a slower, more seductive Natural Rhythm vocal, a Joshua Try The dub rework with more spiritual synths and slower, spacious drums, a bubbly Andrew Macari String Me Along vocal mix that is cuddly and warm and a chunky Andrew Emil 2M19 dub that rolls heavy with fizzy, sugary chords. Each one breathes fresh life into the original, but always with a sympathetic hand.

Review: British disco/house veteran Riva Starr's 'Keep Me On The Dancefloor' first appeared in single form, foreshadowing Starr's new album of the same name and which you now hear before you. A full, groove-cut expression of the act of living the night, this ascendant orchestra-disco corpus features heavy apparitions from fellow discoursers Harry Stone, Biishop, Chromeo and Nic Hanson, shoulder-to-shoulder genii in the field. With sparkling, danceable rhythms and beautifully clear vocals at its core, the record twines themes of emotional connection and the irresistible pull of the floor, and its many mixes ('Mo' House', 'Mo' Tech', you name em) add extra chilli spice to an already zesty total mix.

A dozen dramas extend over what sound like alt-futuristic house tracks with pyramided spires lopped off the top; the sonic equivalent of sunk relief symbols in sandstone. Increasingly irreverent as it progresses, 'Track 9' and 'Track 7' can be marked out as the weirdo highlights, relishing artifactual mud, stodgy fidelity.

Generation Next opens with taught, pinging kicks and tinny melodies on deep house gem 'Senza Via D'Uscita' then Flabaire from Paris brings more bleeping sci-fi synths to a churning and dubbed out low end. Big Strick himself layers in electrically charged, fizzing synths and ticking hi-hats to his raw and gritty 'Bang My Shit' and Ron Cook ups the pace with the blissed out bumps of heady hymn, 'Again And Again.' Pegasvs from London also stands out with his great drum programming on '808 Jazz'.

Alberto Melloni - "Credimi"
Review: A clutch of 12 new tracks from contemporary Italian producers, offering a snapshot of modern disco rooted in local language and rhythm, without leaning into retro tropes. Paul Older's 'Che Disco Vuoi' and Riva Starr's 'Allora Amore' both lead with clean percussion and full-bodied basslines, the former leaning pop, the latter more loop-driven. 'Statua Greca' by Valentino Vivace and 'Tutto Matto' by Hey Cabrera! extend the formula with sharper synth programming and a vocal-led structure. Sam Ruffillo & Fimiani's 'Non Era Facile' blends house swing with lounge-adjacent instrumentation, while Kymono's 'Lasciati Andare' keeps things percussive and tight. Dov'e Liana's 'La Notte Infinita' and Mille Punti's 'Matto' take a looser approach, building around layered synth work and call-and-response vocal phrases. Bruno Belissimo's 'Donna Piu' cuts more minimal, with a stripped rhythm section and filtered pads. The final third of the set moves further into dancefloor territory: Fimiani's 'Proibito' and Alessandro Rotter's 'La Sera, La Discoteca, La Spiaggia' both favour extended intros and vocal refrains. Alberto Melloni's 'Credimi' rounds things off with a warm, restrained finish. The sequencing keeps a balance between form and variation, with the Italian-language vocals acting as the unifying element across styles.

Review: Pressed to a short run of 300, this first 12” from Local Groove pulls four edits targeted for late-night selectors. Among them, ‘Sit Yourself Down’ leans into loose-limbed funk and warm disco bounce, locking a dusty groove under clipped vocals and snappy percussion. It’s one of the first tastes of what the Liverpool-based label has billed a no-frills approach, rooted in time-eased cratebugging sensibilities. Each record is hand-numbered and stamped with Disco Stu Metal Man, the label’s lo-fi mascot, evidencing a DIY ethos that cuts through the polish. No digital fluff, just straight-up edits pressure.

Review: For the uninitiated, Rotation Sound System is a collective of veteran crate diggers, DJs, producers and party promoters spearheaded by Mind Fair’s Dean Meredith and Ben Shenton, and Wreckin’ Havoc trio Rob J, Stuart Robinson and Rich Hall. For years they’ve thrown an annual garden party (using their custom soundsystem of the same name) and now Leng has offered them a chance to curate their own comp. As you’d expect, the 12-track collection is piled high with largely unknown gems, from the tactile, syntth-heavy Balearic breeze of Moondata’s ‘Let The Sunshine In (Dub)’ and Roger Renning’s chugging dub disco aligned ‘Cecelia’, to the oddball boogie-pop of ‘Music’ by Amy Cooper, the Italo-disco inspired throb of Michael Heart’s ‘Some Girls (Instrumental)’ and the loved-up synth-pop-goes-proto-house of Jean Louis Murat’s ‘To Garder Pres De Moi (Dream Remix)’.

Hustling For Horns
Dirty Deeds
Review: On this fresh 'From The Vault' sounding-in from Aliens On Wax - between Zxx, Chi-troit duo Gettoblaster, and longtime rave favourite Moody Records bigshot Bad Boy Bill - lies a serious Jane/Opus III re-hit and a finer Lil Louis 'I Called You' sax version, retitled 'Hustling For Horns'. Unserious in tone but serious in weight and sound architecture and design, the record reaches a super definite peak on the closing acid original 'Dirty Deeds'. But we love the A1, personally; for as long as the Opus III version is (re-)remixed, we can always welcome the next day with open arms .

Casio LK 2
Review: Texan producer Ben Hixon has been particularly prolific of late, releasing a swathe of rather good - and undeniably analogue-powered - deep house EPs on Dolfin Music, a label he's been associated with for many years. Here he drops a seven-inch single - a rarity within house music - featuring two jams that make extensive use of his Casio LK keyboard. A-side 'Casio LK 1' is a breezy chunk of old school style deep house that comes blessed with a deep, heavy bassline, sparkling keyboard riffs, and soulful, eyes-closed vocal snippets. He opts for a sweatier, more stripped-back and occasionally distorted drum sound on 'Casio LK2', wrapping this tough-as-teak, no-nonsense beat in dreamy chords and spacey melodic flourishes.

Review: Trax Records mainstay and Chicago "Queen Of House Music" contender Screamin' Rachael surfaces with 'Disco 3000', a rawhide vinyl-only blast of acid-soaked Chicago grit, limited to just 150 hand-numbered copies. This 12" pushes her punk-inflected house legacy into tougher, sci-fi terrains, looping in longtime Trax affiliates for a three-track session that cuts deep. Side A opens with 'Bitch (D BEAT Long Version)', a stripped, percussive thumper with Trax's A&R in the driver's seat, followed by Marcus Mixx's warped 303 meltdown 'Acid Trip - Unending Journey Mixx'. Flip it for DJ Chip Chop's chaotic 'Disco 3000 MEGA MIX', stitching wild-eyed moments from Screamin' Rachael's earlier LP into one breathless rush of clattering, drum-machinic squelch.
