Piano Sunset
Cat: SC 7066. Rel: 12 Oct 23

Balearic/Downtempo
Piano Sunset (4:32)
Lost In Palms (4:55)
Review: The diffuse hues and retro-feeling colours of the artwork on this new 45rpm from Star Creature perfectly embody the downtempo and Balearic sounds within. They come from A Vision Of Panorama who seems to ever more have the dance floor in sights over his last few releases. That's not to say these are banging tunes - but they do have lovely grooves. 'Piano Sunset' is a real spine tingler with 80s keys and mid tempo drums that come alive with crisp hits and a fresh bassline. 'Lost In Palms' then has a shuffling and low slung groove with nice wet hits. Add in some more lush chords and you have a real pearler.

Show Me (Insturmental) (4:55)
Purple (Insturmental) (4:10)
Review: A Vision of Panorama and Star Creature continue their successful collaboration with another lovely 12" for lovers of classic house. Following the sold-out Fusion To Illusion LP, this new offering blends deep beats with hints of boogie and r&b in a fine showcase of the duo's signature sound, which is effortlessly cool, timeless, and trend-defying. Featuring vocal contributions from Sykes and Stacie G, the A-side delivers smooth, loungey vibes and includes the 12" version of 'Purple' which has been previously available only as a 7". The A-side also includes the instrumental track 'Ear Dreamin',' while the flip focuses entirely on instrumentals and brings a futuristic yet nostalgic edge.

Review: With summer gone, this album is the perfect soundtrack to remind you of the warmer season. It's a lush blend of tropical disco grooves, deep house, Balearic vibes, smooth jazz and Mediterranean cool for sipping cocktails and dreaming of a blissful escape. Each track features dreamy textures, fresh rhythms, shimmering chords and rich melodies enhanced by delightful percussive details. It's a majestic work by A Vision Of Panorama with a carefree atmosphere.

Make Me Wanna

Make Me Wanna (3:22)
Wait Up (3:28)
Review: The latest dinked 7" single on Tim Zawada and Ben Van Dyke's essential Star Creature label comes from Diamond Oritz, AKA boogie and '80s soul revivalist Jeremy Diamond-Oritz. While there are many overlooked gems in the producer's back catalogue, there's little as rush inducing as "Make Me Wanna". A slick, soulful song with authentically rubbery and kaleidoscopic '80s soul/boogie production, it sounds like a long lost classic. The breezy, slap bass-wielding instrumental B-side, "Wait Up", is arguably even better. Like the A-side, it boasts some serious good synth action and a groove that you just have to dance to.

Let Yourself Go (3:11)
Review: The superb Star Creature label has always been a treasure trove of disco brilliance whether old, new or reissued. This one very much falls into the latter category and finds Jimmie Green's magic 1980 tune 'Dance' reappearing on 45rpm. It's a seductive and funky number with warped and slinky bass, lush hand claps and big horns. Little is known about the mysterious man behind it but suffice it to say he sure has some vocal skills. On the flip side tune 'Let Yourself Go' they take a more slow and sensuous approach over languid grooves and deep rhythms topped with great Rhodes.

Horror Games (3:43)
Horror Games (instrumental) (3:41)
Review: Teddy Powell and Zee Desmondes are The Jack Moves, a contemporary disco and hip hop outfit who here link with unknown newbies The People Of Newark and Larry Hamm for this tidy new 7" on Star Creature. 'Horror Games' has a squelchy synth bass line that carries the loose drum work and bustling methane of background vocals and found sounds. A lead singer takes charge up top as various chatting crowds play out in the background. It's a busy tune that also comes as an instrumental for those who prefer the focus to be on the well crafted drums and bass.

Contemporary Outdoors (A Vision Of Panorama remix) (4:37)
Contemporary Outdoors (Byron The Aquarius Midnight instrumental remix) (5:29)
Review: Igor Jadranin returns with another interstellar EP that redefines genre boundaries. Blending boogie basslines, futuristic synths, vintage drum machines and lush flute, piano and vibraphone melodies, the producer delivers cosmic electro-boogie with a playful edge. Tracks like 'Gangster Electro' bring hard-hitting beats, while remixes from Byron The Aquarius and A Vision of Panorama expand the palette. Byron's haunting 'Midnight' mixes crunch with eerie vibes while Panorama's Nu-Balearic twist adds sunrise warmth to the original. It all adds up to a bold 12" from the much-loved Chicago label.

Make That Change (feat Saucy Lady) (4:42)
Dub Something Every Day (feat Saucy Lady) (4:32)
Review: Razor N Tape main man JKriv makes a rare appearance outside of his beloved imprint for this great one on the ever reliable Chicago imprint Star Creature Universal Vibrations. 'Make That Change' channels the heyday of classic early '80s NYC disco, accompanied by Saucy Lady's wonderful vocal work - guaranteed to be a floor filler. Over on the flip, JKriv serves up a slick disco dub remix which largely forgoes the vocals, but retains that amazing trumpet solo to keep the party going well into the late night.

Night Walk (4:02)
Precious (4:15)
Strive To Survive (5:35)
Moon (5:22)
Review: Stimulator Jones, you might know, is a Stones Throw artist, but here he lands on the house-leaning Star Creature with a new and exquisite outing that finds him tapping into a different side of his skills. He has dropped several fantastic albums before now that go from hip-hop to jazz-funk but here he taps into the magic of Chicago house greats like Fingers Inc and Larry Heard. 'Night Walk' is pure mid-tempo deep house perfection, 'Precious' layers in some tender vocals and a melodic bassline and 'Strive To Survive' brings more manic acid lines. 'Moon' shuts down with some irresistible swing and cosmic synth work.

Moonlight Magic (vocal) (3:23)
Moonlight Magic (instrumental) (3:23)
Take To The Sky (vocal) (3:42)
Take To The Sky (instrumental) (3:42)
Review: Two distinctive musical worlds collide here as City Pop meets with West Coast Boogie and a hint of synthwave jazz-funk for one of the coolest sounding records we've heard for a bit. Kumoko featuring XL Middleton are the artists behind it and the original 'Moonlight Magic' is all soft-focus melodies, wispy pads and filtered vocals over a killer boogie bassline. After the Instrumental comes the more laid back and sun-kissed smoocher that is 'Take To The Sky', and an instrumental of this one is also included.

Follow Me (3:41)
E=MC2 (3:29)
Review: An original of this is so hard to find that even on the most prominent second hand market site out there it hasn't been traded for more than a decade and a half. And it is certainly you now want to cop if you know what's up: Phase II's a-side delight 'Follow Me' is an adventurous synthed-out peak time boogie jam with spiritual levels of vocal magic. On the flip is a slightly more psychedelic disco stomper with freaky pads and wispy melodies over fast paced drum funk.

Pineapple Island (5:00)
Review: Star Creature continues its reign over the synth-funk scene by bringing hard-hitting, dance floor-shaking grooves to clubs worldwide. Their latest release, from Toronto's Raf Reza, pushes the boundaries of instrumental synth-funk with undeniable Chicago flair. The A-side 'Why You Gotta' features a perfect tempo, driving bassline, atmospheric pads and sharp synths over a classic disco beat that is guaranteed to energise any dance floor. The B-side, 'Balearic Boogie,' delivers sun-soaked vibes ideal for both seaside terraces and packed, sweaty basements. Fans of Star Creature's usual suspects like A Vision of Panorama, Mogwaa, and E. Live will definitely want to grab this one.

Review: Temu's debut on Star Creature follows a successful run with sister label Tugboat Editions, which released three sought-after 7"s over the past decade. This Giant 12" EP brings those rare covers to a larger format for more handy DJ deployment. The A-Side includes Temu's vital new take on the classic 'Is It All Over My Face?', plus a body-popping cover of Kraftwerk's 'We Are The Robots,' and a funky version of Herbie Hancock's 'Ready or Not.' The B Side showcases Temu's versatility with a cover of Tears for Fears, a Talkbox groove rendition of the Jones Girls, and a nod to Kano all of which make this is must-have for funk heads.

Reachin' For It
If You Want It (You Can Have It)
Review: This scorching 7" single features standout tracks from Chicago's Third Rail, who later became known as Maxx Traxx, and specifically for their monster hit 'Don't Touch It' (which has also been reissued by Star Creature and Numero before now). These tracks are drawn from the band's sole 1982 album, Reachin' For It, which is listed on Discogs for over L700, so not one for the feint-hearted. The single delivers high-octane, first-wave boogie with big bass, catchy choruses, energetic playing, and soulful vocals that infuse both tracks with joy and positivity. Limited import copies mean this will go pick and become pricey again so don't dally on it.

Review: Star Creature Vibes is the label's first ever compilation and boy is it a good one. Across both sides of wax are unreleased tracks and new mixes by label favourites, all of whom offer up a new school mix of contemporary disco funk complete with spaced out synths, go slow jams and cosmic vibes. The whole thing is an easy to love collection of tracks that work as well on a lazy Sunday as they do a sun-kissed Saturday afternoon terrace. Kutkorners conjuring authentic disco magic with their cut 'The Finest', while Shiro Schwarz's 'Exoplanet Love' is particularly smoochy with its whispery vocals squelchy boogie bass. This is a dazzling collection.
