Review: For reliable, jacking, and horny drum tracks, Paul Johnson's debut on the prolific Chiwax is probably the best thing since DJ Slugo's recently repressed Livin' That Ghetto Life 12". At six tracks large - three on each side - this record is a weapon for the DJ and stand out vocal cuts include "Aww Shit" and Who's Psy Is This", while for instrumental melt downs check out "Speech Impediment" and the almost Yello sounding "Relieve Me".

Review: By the time he released debut album Bump Talkin' in 1995, Paul Johnson was already an established figure on the Chicago house scene. He'd already released all manner of bumpin', forthright fare on such legendary labels as Cajual, Dance Mania and Djax-Up Beats, leading UK label Peacefrog to offer him an album deal. While many of his early singles were undeniably slamming, Bump Talkin' was an altogether more musically rich affair, with Johnson offering up a selection of warm, rich, jazz-flecked deep house cuts that have stood the test of time superbly. This vinyl reissue - the first since the original album release - emphatically proves the timeless nature of the music. Relatively few copies are available so don't hang around if you want to snag one.

Review: Chicago legend Paul Johnson had many sides to his sound, one was the hyperactive and often crass sounds of the city's ghetto house sound, as popularised by the likes of DJ Funk and the city's seminal Dance Mania label. Then it should come as no surprise this EP first appeared on that very label in 1995 and is now re-issued for the heads. "Ride Me Girl" bears all the hallmarks of the Dance Mania sound both lyrically and musically with its thumping and relentless 909 drum workout and looped vocals. Lil' Louis collaboration "Blackout" is a real gem and reminiscent of another under acknowledged Windy City sound: hard house, as popularised by Green Velvet's Relief Records imprint. On the flip "The Set Up" and "Tak A Lickin" are more like the Paul Johnson most people know: loopy and funky DJ tools executed to perfection. Much like DJ Sneak, Johnson had huge influence on house music with this sound.
