Deeper Than Black EP
Deeper Than Black EP (limited 12")
Cat: CCP 05. Rel: 19 Apr 23
Deeper Than Black (7:32)
Alzira Vida (8:23)
Ocean Drive (6:21)
Difi The Hifi (6:50)
Review: We're not sure who GeeW is but since 2021 they have served up three super fusion EPs, one on Ten Lovers Music and two on Colin Curtis Presents, which is where they return now for the third time. Their Deeper Than Black EP is a magic one that draws on all forms of jazz, soul, Latin, bossa, funk and house to cook up broken beat explorations doused in sunshine and with one eye on the stars. The title cut is a lively and vibrant jam with layers of percussion and mad Rhodes jams, 'Alzira Vida' is a little more chill but no less expertly arranged and 'Ocean Drive' then gets more dance with its prickly broken beats and lush horns. 'Difi The Hifi' is high-paced fusion brilliance.

The Pachanga EP
Cat: CCP 11. Rel: 11 Jul 24
Pachanga (Be On Di Geemix) (5:24)
Bruk Free (6:17)
Necesitas Esto (SLW Geemix) (7:48)
Necesitas Esto (instrumental) (7:47)
Review: Plenty of class defines these cuts on Colin Curtis Presents. GEEW is the original artist behind tw of them: 'Bruk Free' is the first and arrives as a vibrant fusion of fleshy synth bass and broken beats with bright chords and florid sax notes. The other is 'Necesitas Esto' (instrumental) which is another sun-worshipping bit of freeform synth jazz-funk. The SLW Geemix is a little more club-ready with some classic Nina Simone vocals re-sung in soulful fashion. Last of all is 'Pachanga' (Be On Di Geemix) which has a cosmic feel in the inquisitive, pixel-thin synth leads.

Supernova (7:45)
Nu Horizonz (8:00)
Subtonix (8:29)
Brazilian Freeez (6:00)
Review: Gee wizz, we've got a 'Supernova' on our hands. The eponymous UK-based producer Gee W has gone above and beyond on this fresh EP for Colin Curtis Presents, topping up the label's slick repertoire with four unusually improvisatory club numbers. With each track playing out as spiritual/noir jazz freakouts live-improvised over quantized club skeletons, pieces such as 'Nu Horizonz' and 'Subtonix' enchant and impress with their multifarious layers and impressive array of instrumental choices, from vibraphone ting to trumpet parp to bass lick.

How Long Has This Been Going On? (6:15)
Out After 4 (Nova Fronteira Gee mix) (7:19)
Siempre Tu (8:12)
Review: Colin Curtis Presents 'The Head Hunter' EP by GeeW, aka. Glenn Worthington, a relative new kid on the block, yet whose releases since 2021 have dealt in expert specialist wares of danceable acid jazz and nu-jazz. Such factors continue on this latest output, with the cloud nines and fluting solos of 'Head Hunter' and 'Speedball' whisking the listener away unto a quick flight, with spirited zoomings-past of electric bass and French horn, which dance astride the craft's flanks, as we shoot ever further into the abyss of jazzspace. Then B-siders 'Brazsecco Interlude' and 'How Long Has This Been Going On?' mark a migration from the cockpit through to the onboard lounge, in which Prosecco is poured and mounted speakers vibrate, curtailing anxieties with sweetly arranged vocals and carefully stacked percussion.

When U Go (FYI Chris remix) (5:54)
Running (6:15)
Running (Finn remix) (4:32)
Review: Tom Kerridge's Girls Of The Internet project is back after a successful debut via WNCL Recordings, landing on the excellent Ramp Recordings with an aptly rampant four-tracker that's just in time to catch the rest of the summer heat! "When U Go" is a super-chilled, super-vibing deep house sketch with a marvellously sexy wave of female vocals, then remixed into something more 'tech' by FYI Chris. On the flip, "Running" wins our hearts over as the killer tune on this EP, not least because of its painfully soulful vocals and mild-mannered elegance on the instruments and groove beneath it; The rework, from Finn, once again adds a lot more of a tech-house vibe to the arrangement, and a whole load of bass on top of that. TIP!

Racing Gloves

S Composites (feat Liu) (4:04)
Racing Gloves (feat The Narrator) (3:13)
Review: Gaika is the experimental rapper, producer, and visual and performance artist you need in your life, and what better way to get acquainted if you aren't already than with this new 12" for Theme LTD. 'S Composites' opens up and features Liu adding some angelic vocal sounds to the crunchy broken beast, glassy synths and generally frosty, lo-fi production aesthetic. It's a tune that will lodge deep in your brain then on the flipside is 'Racing Gloves' (feat The Narrator). It's a spacious, eerie, rather haunting number with woozy pads and some nice conscious bars over the dubby low ends.

Horizon (0:43)
Mahal (3:18)
Orb (4:53)
Snake Oil (4:53)
Black Sand (4:33)
Review: Mahal by Glass Beams melds a diverse array of influences into a unique and enchanting soundscape. The Melbourne-based trio, shrouded in mystery with their mask-wearing anonymity, lets their music speak volumes. Built around founding member Ranjan Silva, their sound draws from the rich heritage of Ravi Shankar, Bollywood, Electric Light Orchestra, and traditional blues.Inspired by repeated viewings of 'The Concert For George', Silva's vision for Glass Beams seems to echo the fusion George Harrison envisioned when introducing classical Indian music to Western pop. The EP opens with 'Horizon,' setting a serene tone before leading into the title track 'Mahal,' an instrumental piece that envelops the listener in its mystical charm. 'Orb' follows with a riveting bass riff, while 'Snake Oil' delves deeper into Indian classical territory, showcasing evocative vocals. The EP concludes with 'Black Sand,' a dramatic and beautiful track featuring interwoven vocals and guitar. As their second EP, following Mirage, Mahal solidifies Glass Beams' distinct place in music, defying categorisation and quietly demanding attention with its almost otherworldly quality.

Time Track (reprise) (5:00)
Hymn Of The Hear (8:46)
Review: 'Suite For Chick' is a heartfelt tribute to the late jazz legend Chick Corea. This 12" was assembled to reimagine classics like 'City Gate, Rumble,' 'Time Track,' 'Hymn of the Heart' and Return to Forever's 'Romantic Warrior.' It finds Bangkok-based Maarten Goetheer collaborating with Thailand's jazz virtuoso Pong Nakornchai and blending Wurlitzer chords, Moog basslines, ARP leads and Rhodes phasings. Inspired by his jazz-pianist father, Maarten fuses classic jazz with modern genres like techno, cosmic disco and ambient for a fresh take on jazz fusion. These electrifying interpretations honour Corea's pioneering legacy in jazz and fusion from his groundbreaking work with Miles Davis to founding Return to Forever.

Shining Through (5:38)
Shining Through (dance mix) (5:39)
Review: This naive street soul gem is so rare, that - prior to its repress here by Heels & Souls - it was barely accessible anywhere save for a potential L500 re-flogging on eBay. Luckily, those with their best interests at heart do the glorious work of repressing the tracks 'Over You' and 'Shining Through' - as well as their slightly different dance mixes - to EP-length wax. You're lucky to be in the presence of some quintessential street soul here, featuring detuned vocals, crude plodding drums and digital strings that evoke shafts of evening light on city concrete. And if you're ever suffering a bad breakup, 'Over You' is the harsh remedy.

The Creator Has A Master Plan (5:21)
Love Is Everywhere (4:26)
You've Got To Have Freedom (6:25)
Review: Matthew Halsall's Gondwana label is seeing a busy August what with the imprint flooding our jazz charts with reissues and, of course, new releases such as this wonderful collaborative effort from The Gondwana Orchestra and Dwight Trible. Trible's voice is like silk, running up and down the delicate waves of melodies from the collective, with "Colors" and "The Creator Has A Master Plan" both capable of making the toughest of audiences feel utterly uplifted. On the flip, "Love Is Everywhere" shines bright amid a flurry of flutes and intricate drum percussions, while "You've Got To Have Freedom" rides off a much smoother, deeper sort of vibe that's got a little funk at its core. Wicked.

Lights Out (2:14)
Promised Land (2:31)
Sunday Soul (2:07)
Within Myself (2:09)
Review: On his latest EP 'Sunday Soul', Goodge takes listeners on a four-track journey into the many-chambered heart of funk, r&b, jazz and chillout. From the starting gun, we're hit with whammied axes and street-level audio-bustles, recalling the many exploitation movie soundtracks of the seventies and chic funkouts of yore. Then 'Promised Land' provides a gradual uplift, riffing around and about a lolling bass, as said guitars increase in intensity; this is then followed by 'Sunday Soul', which seizes upon the day of rest with a continued drive (of course, in today's world, no day is safe). Finally, 'Within Myself' ends things on a note of introspection, crafting an internal dialogue of cloudy synth fuggings set against a dust-cloud of instrumentation.

You Can Do It On Your Own (2:03)
Review: It has always been hard to define the exact sounds of Shall Not Fade behind 'just good tunes'. The Bristol label is one of the UK's finest at this point and Felipe Gordon is exactly the sort of artists who fits their vibe. His new EP The Lichtenberg Effect is a timeless one that draws on jazz for its vibrant house kicks. The drums are raw and punchy on 'Happy Sunday' while the keys are off grid and wonky. 'I'll Find A Way' brings a little swing to get those hips moving while clipped vocals add some soul. The title cut is a blend of off-dance jazz chords and feathery hi hats with leggy drums and 'You Can Do It On Your Own' closes with some downbeat introspection.

Enzo's Theme (1:42)
Review: Following the success of their debut album On The Inside, UK hip-hop, soul and r&b collective Gotts Street Park are back with their highly anticipated new EP which features a series of instrumental tracks born from the raw, live chemistry of the band. Made using techniques inspired by Miles Davis's Bitches Brew and with no lyrics, the music draws on psychedelic influences and hip-hop instrumentals so tracks like 'Diego' blend funky grooves and snaking guitar riffs, while 'Ozu' evokes the peaceful, voyeuristic feel of director Yasujir? Ozu's films. The EP ends with 'Enzo's Theme' which is nicely inspired by The Godfather.

Sundays With U (GT remix) (7:16)
Review: Gratts returns with a release that perfectly balances club-ready energy and laid-back vibes. The opening track, 'Sunsets (FBI Mix)', pays tribute to Sydney's DJ Simon Caldwell, blending dubby West Coast deep house influences with smooth, atmospheric vocals from Lesley Williams. On 'Sundays With U (Neapolitan Mix)', Gratts delves into jazzy, bruk-inspired sounds with a standout soprano sax performance by Andreas Poppelbaum and lyrics in the Neapolitan dialect from Ambra. The 'GT Remix' of 'Sundays With U' shifts gears, enhancing the original with a deep, dancefloor-focused rhythm. Gratts and his collaborators create a textured release that's as suited for radio as it is for late-night sets.

I Need Love (6:40)
Review: The DFA debut of longstanding member Jayson Green also signals the revival of the classic DFA twelve-inch format, so you might playfully suggest it stands for Dying Formats Always. Jay has lent his vocals to various bands such as Panthers, Violent Bullshit, Cheeseburger, and the renowned hardcore group Orchid, always showcasing his wit and humor without veering into cynicism. Assuming a bandleader role, he presents a classic A-side here with the low slung funk of 'Local Jerk,' which was recorded during a lively party. It has tight disco drums, resounding claps and a groove-inducing bassline with big horns. On the B-side, 'I Need Love' unfolds as a darkly humorous nightlife satire.

Review: Street Corner's FliP Sessions is a great source of beats for hip-hop heads and this eighth volume is no different. It's limited to just 200 copies and features five more exquisite little sketches that are loveably rough around the edges and full of laidback and dusty soul. After the busted breaks of GREENMINDZ, Toby Glider zones you out with lo-fi loops and Beaulemaire brings heavier beats. Ain't No Sunshine (3:53)
Changing Things (5:37)
Review: Dynamite Cuts continue in their mission to share jazz, funk and soul deep cuts with the world, this time pulling a timeless gilded funk rabbit out of their hats. Gregory James Edition took on the collective mantle of "Prophets Of Soul" at the moment of their 1973 debut, which would only then be followed by the 1979 record Gonna Grow Some Gold before an eventual disbandment. A shame, since 'Ain't No Sunshine' and 'Changing Things' stand out as the record's finest offcuts; the first track uses its various clavinets and Farfisa Combo organs to estrange an existingly capricious funk sound, rendering it rather odd, alien, spacious. 'Changing Things' contrasts with upswells of gushing piano set to a funk backbeat, which come yet measured by an admirable key change control, again held down by lead player Gregory Bibb.

Review: Groove Chronicles are as legendary as it comes when you're talking about garage acts. They have such a rich legacy and it dates as far back as 1997. The dup known as Noodles & Dubchild are now back with another 12" that is going to fly off the shelves and offer up their much sought-after Brokenstep edits. Strange Games (4:01)
Niagara Falls (3:27)
Review: Guest's Guest Mini Edits Vol 5, released on Cuts, is a delightful fusion of funk and soul. Side-1 features 'Strange Games,' a smoothed-out funk instrumental that exudes magic. The track is elevated by big 1970s strings, adding a touch of disco flair while maintaining a slower BPM, making it uniquely great in itself. Side-2's 'Niagara Falls' offers a deep tribal groove, evoking the vibe of a 70s drama theme show, reminiscent of something you might hear on 'Starsky and Hutch' or 'Emergency!' This EP beautifully captures the essence of that era, making it something to check out for fans of vintage funk and soul.

Jonathon Hansen - "What Its Meant To Me" (3:26)
Jeff Silna - "It's Always Something With You" (4:14)
Review: Favorite Recordings unearth two rare gems from the AOR Global Sounds series on this 7" single. Jonathon Hansen's track, recorded in 1978, captures a soulful AOR sound with heartfelt lyrics inspired by the breakup of his band. Backed by a close-knit group of musicians, the recording feels both intimate and timeless. On the flip, Jeff Silna's contribution channels the energy of Miami's TK Studios, blending funk-inspired grooves with smooth, melodic arrangements. Both tracks are a testament to the creativity of their era, lovingly reissued for collectors and fans of vintage soul.

Review: Brighton-based producer Pierson brings a refreshing diversity to his deep house and disco house offerings, blending multiple influences with an ease that keeps his tracks exciting and unpredictable. 'Forget It Mate' starts off with a slow groove that feels like a nostalgic nod to vintage deep house, but it's much moreithis track is a skillful blend of old-school vibes and modern energy. It seamlessly moves between different styles, creating a dynamic and infectious vibe. 'Mr Miami' follows with a lively piano-driven melody, uplifting the listener with its ambient house feel, where lush chords and smooth transitions create a feel-good atmosphere. On Side-2, 'Spank Dat' is a funky standout. With its rich groove and rare disco aura, it's a killer track for any dancefloor, offering a unique fusion of genres. Finally, 'Just No!' dives into a tribal, electro-driven territory. Its organic yet robotic funk takes on an 80s electro feel, offering a quirky, dynamic sound that pushes boundaries. Drifted Entities Vol 1 is his latest offering and is an experimental take on dub, cosmic funk, jazz and drum & bass with the HFP signature unifying it all. Good Night (4:25)
Review: Ino Hidefumi is an electric pianist, jazzist, experimental electronicist, and music venue owner based in Japan. The sole purveyor of music on his own, strikingly singular, idiosyncratic Innocent Record label, Hidefumi's output remains starkly un-fuck-withable, betraying the highest concern with both songrcraft and packaging design. Sonically, everything he's made over the years sounds as tight as an oxidised tap in a vacuum seal, and 2018's 'Can't Sleep' is no exception to this. Emblematic of his preference of short EPs over albums, Hidefumi's tendency to pour over his music is evident here: 'Can't Sleep' portrays him slumped over the piano, having involuntarily dozed off, presumably after spending hours composing this curt but crucial sonic corpus. Embossed Rhodes novae and gullet-sung vocals abound on the title track, their effortless feel working to portray the hilarity of such eugeroic lapses, while 'Good Night' moves ever so slightly more emphatic, beelining to wish the listener goodnight, despite the subverted resolution to fall asleep after all.

Saffron (MF instrumental) (3:27)
Arrow Root (MF instrumental) (2:11)
Review: The MC was one of a kind. His legend lives on through his work which here gets served up on new label Doom in instrumental form. 'Saffron' (MF instrumental) is a silky late-night sound with warm melancholic chords and subtle boom-bap beats. On the flip, things get more jazzy with the expressive trumpets and more raw broken beat patterns of 'Arrow Root' (MF instrumental). It's a timeless and sophisticated sound that will woo any listener into a calming mood and comes on a limited 7".

Fly Away (feat Lil Summer) (4:28)
Dear Limmertz (feat Kazuhiro Sunaga) (4:30)
Review: Japanese nu-jazz doesn't get any more smouldering than this deep cut from Yusuke Hirado featuring Lil Summer on vocal duties. 'Fly Away' is a mellow melter thanks in no small part to the moody strings lingering behind Hirado's fluid funk production. It's a downtempo vibe which calls to mind the UK street soul sound, contrasted by B-side joint 'Dear Limmertz' which has a more jazz funk oriented flavour. Both joints won't let you down when you want to set the mood as smooth as possible - with a seasoned pro like Hirado at the controls, what else would you expect?

Collision In Blue (3:44)
Review: Genesis present a 7" release of Japanese jazz singer Yusuke Hirado's cover of 'He Loves You'. The original song was written and recorded by Hawaiian jazz-fusion band Seawind, and now it's been given a silky smooth update by Hirado assisted by Yu-ri Tanaka. The track is buffeted along by the sweetest Rhodes chords and a funky, Moog-esque lead, but there's also a distinct slant from the steady tick of the drum machine patterns which form the rhythmic backbone of this version. Backed up with 'Collision In Blue', this is a perfect single for anyone who appreciates that clean, crisp approach to a jazz classic.

Review: Detroit native Jason Hogans will not be a familiar name to many, despite the fact he has been putting out music - albeit sporadically - for 20 odd years. A release on Theo Parrish's hero-worshipped Sound Signature will always put you in the spotlight, though, especially when it's as good as this. The artist explores deep Motor City house, percussive broken beats and that shamanistic, off-grid sound that label head Theo Parrish is such a master of. Standouts include the airy, spacious beat work of 'Favorite Coffee Mug' and steamy post-jungle concoction that is 'For My Solids.'

Remember To Remember
To The Unknowledgeable One
Review: Rick Holmes' Remember to Remember is a gem of a reissue from 1981, faithfully presented with both original tracks on each side. this 12" vinyl from gold mink records is gleaming with top soul-jazz and funk music with a crisp production that stands out. Sadly, Rick Holmes recently passed away which makes this reissue extra special. The title track 'Remember to Remember' and the B-side 'Tothe Unknowledgeable One' showcase infectious grooves and soulful rhythms that mark this record as a true classic. Hearing it for the first time on jfm/horizon radio in the early 80s was a revelationiintroducing many to rare groove soul. Records like this weren't typical at parties, where uptempo tracks ruled, making its presence all the more striking. It played a crucial role in the rare groove scene, which was just on the brink of exploding and changing how underground soul was appreciated. for collectors and enthusiasts, this reissue is a nostalgic and essential piece of music history.

Flipper (4:07)
Review: Holo makes a welcome return to Shall Not Fade, delivering four tracks that strike a perfect balance between deep house nostalgia and contemporary groove. His signature soundilush synth work, crisp percussion, and a delicate emotional pulliis on full display, weaving a rich, transportive atmosphere throughout. 'Pink Wax' sets the scene with warm, enveloping pads and a rolling low-end, effortlessly drawing us in. 'Flipper' leans into more playful territory, its shimmering melodies and tight drum programming keeping the energy light yet propulsive. Across the record, Holo's ability to craft emotive, immersive dance music remains undeniable, blending hazy textures with infectious rhythms in a way that feels both timeless and forward-thinking.

What Now (3:34)
Meditation (feat Ramona Reid & Ann Sensing) (3:54)
Review: The upcoming second solo studio album by US singer-songwriter and guitarist Brittany Howard (of Alabama Shakes fame), What Now follows up Jaime and its Reimagined edition, striking out with a fierce, "truest and bluest", nigh "brutal" lyricism, in which Howard addresses the titular question - "what now?" - and how today's society might respond. Written, of course, during the height of the pandemic, when such doubts were excised and up in the air (and more so than usual), the album's sonic aesthetic spans full-bodied funk, psychedelic chord progressions, and a powerful bombast. The overall answer sounds to be: move through it; surrender to "the now", gracefully.

Review: The mighty Dusty Donuts return to Queensbridge where they encounter a 'Lost Girl' featured on a legendary mixtape by one of QB's finest. This bouncy, choppy Marc Hype & Jim Dunloop Late Night Remix is sure to ignite any gathering. On the flipside, the vibes shift from Queensbridge to Staten Island and bring a special sound to work the crowd - this heavy soul classic arrives in true Shaolin style with choppy, dark soul chords and classic hip-hop beats. It's a track that commands attention with the drums but also locks in head and heart.

Review: Toronto's Icons Of Hip Hop follow up their inaugural 7" with a heavy second B-boy drop, pairing a titan of rap over an unmistakable funky 70s soul loop. The A-side delivers a vocal-led version that marries sharp bars with dusty horn chops and a butter-smooth rhythm section, channelling the crate-digging spirit of golden era production with modern flair. Flip it for the 'Touch The Sky' Funky Soul Instrumental Edit, where the sample's full groove comes into focusigritty drums, warm basslines and shimmering soul textures that nod to the track's roots while inviting DJs to get playful. Limited stickered dinked 45, this is essential heat for anyone still chasing that raw, loop-driven magic.
