Magic Johnson (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: ZEN 12426. Rel: 04 Dec 15
  1. Magic Johnson (4:40)
  2. Tape Johnson (6:00)
Review: OYE crew and Berlin purveyors of dusty, hip-hop inspired deep house make their major label debut for Ninja Tune and good on them. It really is their time at present, what with their Money $ex and Box Aus Holz imprints going from strength to strength. "Magic Johnson" inspires the greatness of the song's namesake. All dusty jazz breaks, dreamy rhodes and xylophones and whirring organs are the perfect soundtrack for a Sunday stroll through Prenzlauer Berg after a night of clubbing on no sleep, finishing off in Mauerpark for falafel and record digging. Want something moodier and sleeker? The pair are on hand with the dubbed up "Tape Johnson" take on the B Side.

  4. Khords 1 (4:32)
Review: Warren Harris did a sterling job on his first outing for Perpetual Rhythms as Hanna, and he's back for round two. Things are just as deep as you would hope and expect, with Harris' unique take on the Detroit house formula present and correct on the cleverly executed "Lake Shore Dr." "Parallel" finds him exploring his penchant for snagged, off-kilter rhythms matched with deep house delicacy, and "Gold Coast" takes things into lounge territory without ever sounding insipid. Therein lies the magic of Hanna, and beautiful experiment "Khords 1" is on hand to finish the EP off as a statement of just how special and unique Harris' music is.

Review: There is no friend as loyal as a 12": Cosmic Resonance co-founder elevates his debut EP to vinyl. Released digitally in June, many of you will already be familiar with the Toronto artist's homage to jazz funk and all its many shiny, smooth tendrils. The slo-mo bruk bliss of "Love Mirage", the sprightly glistening keys and lolloping walking bass of "Dream Swagger", the spiritual disco funk of "Ayahuasca" and so much more; James Harris's deep exploration into his own vaults is a cosmic voyage that joins serious dots between his past, present and glowing future. Take a trip with a loved one today...

Review: There's something wonderfully hazy and fluid about this debut album from German producer Hodini. Built around a combination of unapologetically blazed instrumental hip-hop, Moodymann influences, and the sort tumbling, swinging, sample heavy deep house promoted by Andres, Seven Davis Jr and others, M$03 sound tailor made for humid, lazy summer afternoons. There are collaborations with Glenn Astro and Max Graef, amongst others, and an overriding sense that Hodini is a producer on the rise. Grab a beer, slouch against the nearest tree, light up a jazz cigarette and get lost in the groove.

Review: New Orleans nine-piece, The Hot 8 Brass Band, return to their breakthrough track. Arguably one of the best Marvin Gaye covers in the history of versions, Tru Thoughts have commissioned a brace of contemporisations and pressed them limited edition gold vinyl: J Felix adds a light-footed P-funk bedrock, Ibibio Sound Machine add a dubby weight to the drums, light synths and a cheeky guitar lick, Maddslinky lays down a straight up house strut, Werkha gets his jazzy shuffle on while Jonny Faith twists up a little Jamaican flavour with a dancehall beat and light skanks. Sexual.

On Our Way Home (limited hand-numbered 1-sided vinyl 12")
Cat: EGLO 52. Rel: 25 Aug 16
  1. On Our Way Home (feat Fatima & Jimetta Rose) (5:41)
Review: Experienced producer Shafiq Husayn first appeared on Eglo back in 2014, delivering a fine EP of hip-hop framed modern soul, with the assistance of a battery of collaborators. Two years on he returns to Alex Nut and Floating Points label, with Eglo regulars Fatima and Jimetta Rose lending a hand. It sounds like Husayn has been listening to Floating Points, because "On Our Way Home" is a sumptuous, string-drenched affair, with orchestral parts rising and falling over a skittish electronic rhythm. The focal point, of course, is Fatima and Rose's harmonious lead vocal, which is as sweet, evocative and addictive as you'd expect. It may only be a single-sided release, but it's one killer cut.

  1. Eventide (14:12)
  2. Introduction (4:42)
  3. Happy Gamma Ray (15:13)
Review: The first release from the Axis Audiophile Series. Jeff Mills has formed an electronic jazz fusion band and this 12? is a recording of their recent performance in Kobe during the TodaysArt.JP Festival. Mills manages the decks, drums and percussion and is joined Detroit legend and Underground Resistance stalwart Gerald Mitchell (Los Hermanos/Galaxy 2 Galaxy), keyboardist Yumiko Ohno and bassist Kenji Jino. "Eventide" has the same kind of urban, uplifting soul as anything Kaidi Thatham or Mark de Clive-Lowe have made and isn't bad at all! On the flip "Happy Gamma Ray" features uplifting keys and emotive chords backed by funk bass and one of Mills' unmistakeable 909 drum machine workouts. It really seems that there's no limit to this Motor City legend's creativity which has spanned nearly 30 years and we're excited about this new chapter in the Wizard's sonic universe.

  1. Fade To Grey (Jonny Miller Blitz Musik vocal mix) (7:33)
  2. Fade To Grey (Jonny Miller Blitz Musik instrumental mix) (7:32)
Review: Londoner Jonny Miller runs Sonarpilot Audio and over the years has worked with everyone from Metalheadz and Radium Audio, through to Greg Wilson, Redlight, Seiji and even film director Chris Cunningham. Here he presents edits of the 1980 pop classic "Fade To Grey" by Visage. He had his work cut out for him but he delivers some interesting takes on this old school gem. As Bordello A Parigi best described themselves it is "a proto-houser of sorts and as relevant and influential a track today as it was back then." These remixes use the original stems with the "Jonny Miller Blitz Musik vocal mix" giving the track more of a balearic vibe that you could have imagined Alfredo playing to a crowd of sunburnt brits at Amnesia back in the day. While on the flip, there's a handy instrumental for those of you less keen on the vocals for some reason.

  3. You're Alive (There's Still Time) (2:45)
Review: Under the K15 alias, Kieran Ifill has been responsible for some wonderful deep, expansive and soulful music on Eglo, Wild Oats, Lo Recordings and WotNot Music. Here he returns to the latter for the first time in four years. He hits his stride straight away with "Be Glad You Create Anything", a sparkling, mid-tempo shuffler that wraps darting, Kaidi Tatham style jazz-funk synth motifs around loose and languid beats and a suitably warm and attractive bassline. Ifill's love of fluid piano lines, eyes-closed electronics and dreamy chords once again comes to the fore on 120 BPM deep bumper "Communion", before the producer treats us to the deliciously loved-up, poignant and sumptuous head-nodding bliss that is fine closer "You're Alive (There's Still Time)". In a word: superb.

Review: Dave Aju, Alland Byallo, Kenneth Scott and Marc Smith joined together as KAMM, resulting in a mini-album called Kick Drunk Love for marcel Vogel's Amsterdam based label Intimate Friends.iDescribed in a press release as being influenced by the artists' "love of early '90s MoWax era laid-back beats," it features Barrite on lead vocals (with Byallo and Scott also contributing vocals), Smith on guitar, Byallo on trumpet and Scott on Moog synth. There's a couple guest appearances as well: Damian Schwartz plays some bass on "Sidewalks" and Eureka provides "a hell of a [vacuum] rev" on "Stage Left."

  1. Out Of My Mind (feat Zacky Force Funk & Teeko)
  2. Ebb & Flow (feat Coultrain)
Review: Two powerful slabs of contemporary soul from emerging Oakland player Max Kane. "Out Of My Mind" tells the most future-focused tale: clipped wonky beats, woozy cosmic synth stabs and squidgy do their measured thing while Zacky Force Funk and Teeko drape the lyrical sexiness. "Ebb & Flow" is much more traditional. Horn-laced and dreamy with rich Porter/Scott Heron style tenors, it's a stunning fireside cuddle-up. Wisdom: You'll be feeling max pain if you don't check out Max Kane.

  5. Kid Sublime - "Wings Of Love" (feat Han Litz) (6:21)
Review: Set up as a continuation of their podcast back in 2008, this Russian label joins the dots between jazz various genres. Footwork House Jam no.1 is a homage to the global house culture and the eponymous Moscow-based club night in particular. The idea behind this compilation 'is to provide the fuel for house dance culture and house movement to expand further on' the label claims. Starting off on the A side with Baltimore legend Karizma and his jagged groove therapy session titled "Church Chords" there's more quality with Brit Nubian Mindz with the glitched out disco house of "Check Da Discotheque" which will contort you even more with its nifty beat repeat effects. On the flip is Intr0beatz with the sexy late night deep house of "That DUB" where he goes for that timeless formula of emotive chords, swing fuelled rhythms and sampled diva vocals to full effect.. but wait for that bassline to drop, like seriously! Finally, Dopeness Galore darling Jacob Otten aka Kid Sublime drops the soulful and life affirming broken beat nu-jazz experiment "Wings Of Love".

Review: Hot on the heels of his fittingly titled "So Good" EP on G.A.M.M earlier this year Al Kent returns with a very neat double-A that ticks all the right disco boxes. "Vince" pays respect to Montana with a total dance fantasy, polished and weighted perfectly for today's floors. "Esther" pays equally emphatic dues to the good lady Phillips with a thumping, unabashed twist on "Boy, I Really I Tied One On". Homages don't come with much more respect and craft than these.

Highlights include Sampology adding a warm thump and loopy twist to "Strawberry Fields" (while keeping the sitar shining), Two Dee switching up "Rabbit Hole" into a Miami bass style breakbeat serving session and the misty, spooked out wooden leg skank on "Kojak The Frog". Mystical, faithful, moorish.

Review: Donnie Tempo has only appeared once previously as Knu Je', and that was way back in 2001. Now the alias is revived on Sound Reflection in a shimmering, twirling expression of broken beat and boogie sensibilities for those who like their beats soul n' sun drenched. It's actually his Quad IBB alias that serves up the "original mix" of "Vocoder So Sexy", and it's nothing short of stunning. The rich layers of vocals cavort with the expressive key changes and sharply angled beats, making for a truly striking cut that sounds equally fresh in its instrumental form on the B side.

"Sibashaya Woza" is turned into a rolling filtered-house gem, "Kpanlogo" is a remarkable Afro-meets-bontempi- house excursion at the hands of Debruit but it's Aunte Flo's awesome sleazy house (with hints of classic Minneapolis funk) mix that's the ultimate winner.

Review: Le Recette cooked up a delicious five dish feast earlier this year in the form of their "Towards Fulfilment" EP... And here are two sweet tasters on a limited 45 platter. Both cuts featuring Magic Malik, it's a broad tour across a very short amount of time: "Breezin" studied at the school of both Stevie Wonder and Amp Fiddler. Sleazy, jazzy soul in its silkiest form. "Landing" takes a more abstract twist on ballad craft as the vocals almost melt over the lolloping beats and hazy flutes. Precision timed for the summer...

Review: After her magnetic debut EP for Running Circle in 2017, Nottingham's Yazmin Lacey lands on our charts with her follow-up 12", a piece of work that sounds deeply accomplished and expansive for being her second EP to date. Largely roaming within the jazzo-sphere, When The Sun Dips 90 Degress is a beautifully seductive five-tracker, with the artist's voice reigning supreme over the cascading showers of piano keys and subtle electronics, somehow tapping into the Alice Coltrane sort of vibe. There's no harp here, but plenty of soulful charisma. Fear not thy devout jazz fanatic - this can get real deep and real smooth. It's a broken beat fan's dream some true. More from Lacey is, indeed, expected in the remainder of the year. Marvellous stuff.

This new release finds him purring his way through downtempo, soul-inflected selections that open out a whole new dimension to this talented, versatile producer. Juno's vocals are the icing on a particularly funky cake on "Do For Love", while "So Damn Fine" is an instrumental beat worthy of D'Angelo (sadly not included). The jazzy licks pour out of this release like honey - Larry De Kat just upped his game yet again and we strongly advise you to take heed.

Review: Last time we heard from Cleon and Jazzy Pidjay, otherwise known as Last Bongo In Paris, was back in 2013 on EDR...and here they are back on the same label, and out the bottom of a hat. Similarly to last time, "Bahia Swing" manages to conjure the right balance between jazz, funk and something a little more tropical, a sound and panache that is carried through to the following four cuts of juice. Our favourites are "Ritmo Loco" for its Latin energy, and the delightfully broken "Jarumba". If you're looking for something a little jazzy and saucy, but that pushes beyond the genre's natural confinements, this is it.

Review: Anyone with even the most rudimentary knowledge of hip-hop history will tell you that the roots of rapping can be traced back to the early '70s spoken word albums of The Last Poets. It's because of this that the collective's recent album, Understand What Black Is (their first for nearly two decades), was such a big deal. Here the title track is given the remix treatment. Mala handles the A-side, delivering vocal and instrumental passes that re-cast the track as a skanking, dub-wise excursion full of ricocheting electric piano notes and suitably heavy bass. 2000 Black main men Dego and Kaidi Tatham take a more up-tempo approach on the flip, wrapping the Poets conscious vocals and instrumentation around their own fizzing broken beat rhythms, jazz-funk chords and darting electronics.

Review: Trevor Lawrence Jr impresses us on a constant basis, with his debut album paving a new way for funk and soul music all around the world, subtly swinging to the delicate touch of deep house at its core.
