Flowers EP (12")
Cat: SS 048. Rel: 08 Sep 18
  1. Andrew Ashong & Theo Parrish - "Flowers"
  2. Andrew Ashong - "Take It Slow"
  3. Andrew Ashong - "The Way She Moves" (short version)
Review: At first glance, the pairing of Forest Hill resident Andrew Ashong and Sound Signature boss Theo Parrish would seem strange. But the duo have worked together previously with the Ghanaian born vocalist (and supposed owner of a vinyl collection that would make most record shops look like a car boot sale) lending his soulful tones to Parrish's excellent nine minute plus translation of the Hot Chip and Spiritualised affiliated About Group. Whereas that collaboration was more about Ashong's voice being just one element of a production that was undoubtedly Parrish, the three tracks present on the Flowers EP look to showcase what a talent the Londoner is. Those trademark dust filled stacatto rhythms are present in the opening title track, but they never swamp Ashong's killer vocal delivery, while "Take It Slow" is bonafide D funk of the highest order. After the brutal, divisive nature of Theo's kung fu experimentalism on the Any Other Styles EP, these three tracks show him in a wholly new light and hopefully Parrish and Ashong will be making much more music together.

  1. Lost Soul (part 1) (4:13)
  2. Lost Soul (part 2) (3:50)
Review: DJ DSK has released some heavyweight seven-inch singles over the years, with his 2016 45 "Laminate" - an original slab of funk made in cahoots with the previously unheralded "Lost Soul Collective". Here he gathers together the band once more for a follow-up four years in the making. "Lost Soul" is a two-part affair in keeping with the funk tradition. The A-side is an infectious vocal number that sits somewhere between Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings and the more psychedelic flavour associated with turn-of-the-70s San Francisco soul. As you'd expect, the flipside "Part 2" version strips out most of the vocals to allow the band's warm and heady instrumentation room to breathe.

Cat: 22A 024. Rel: 19 Nov 18
  1. Kraksa (13:11)
  2. Svantetic (10:45)
Review: Those who pay attention to these things know that Poland's EABS (short for Electro Acoustic Beat Sessions) are one of the hottest jazz combos in the world right now - an accolade earned not only via their incredible playing, but also their willingness to fuse elements of classic Polish and American jazz with hip-hop, soul and funk influences. Here, the fast-rising septet joins forces with 22a regular Tenderlonious (who provides flute and soprano sax solos) for two epic workouts. A-side "Kraksa" is something of an epic; an ever-changing 13-minute jazz journey that brilliantly switches from floor-rocking goodness to horizontal bliss midway through. "Svantetic", meanwhile, wraps fuzzy rock guitars and hammered-out piano riffs around a sweaty groove that just grows in intensity throughout.

  2. Nickodemus, The Spy From Cairo & Gitkin - "Inmortales (Body Move)" (feat Femina - El Buho remix) (5:22)
Review: Following El Buho's "Tributaries" remix album, Wonderwheel offer up this choice 7" featuring two distinct cuts not found on the main record. First up is El Buho's take on grand master Quantic, working with the storied producer's considerable knowledge of Latin music to create a remix of "Cumbia Sobre El Mar" already well loved on globally minded dancefloors. On the flip comes the never before released El Buho version of Nickodemus and Femina's "Inmortales" - a fierce, drum-tastic version to get bodies shaking down.

  1. Journey In Satchidananda (6:44)
  2. Blue Nile (8:19)
Review: Manchester's Gondwana Records, run by Matthew Halsall, has been a constant source of good vibes and inspiration. Leaning on a jazz note, most of the material is centred away from the dance floor and yet there is always plenty of movement and joyous rhythm, particularly from Halsall's appearances. Here, we have a reissue of 2015's "Journey In Satchidananda", a majestic wave of jazz flutes, seductive piano keys, in what is an altogether dreamy sort of setting, which is further evolved on the supremely euphoric waves of the unbeatable "Blue Nile". At last, some contemporary jazz on 12" that has left us blown away..!

  1. Let It Fall (DJ Spinna Galactic Soul remix) (7:59)
  2. Let It Fall (7:28)
Review: Moulton Records released veteran vocalist Lady Alma's collaboration with the Rainmakers, "Let It Fall", in the summer of 2018 as a digital-only single. DJ Spinna thought that it should make it out on wax, so he's snapped up their original version and reissued it on his label Wonderwax. You'll find that original mix - a wonderfully warm, dreamy and soulful workout that layers twinkling pianos, electronic bass, atmospheric organ chords and her superb vocals over a skipping broken house beat - on the flipside, with Spinna's brand new "Galactic Soul" revision on the A. He gives it a little more galactic flavour via squelchy synth-bass and futuristic electronic motifs, while beefing up the beats for a heavier dancefloor experience. It's a great remix, though we still prefer the smooth and sensual original version.

  5. Trev - "For You Around Me" (4:57)
  6. Ishfaq - "Hypnosis No 9" (5:06)
Review: Freshly minted label Dance Regular has pushed the boat out for release number one, pulling together no less than six tracks on a multi-artist extravaganza. James Rudie steps up first via the Rhodes-laden, off-kilter deep house dustiness of "Good Fry Up", before Szajna doffs a cap towards 2000 Black on the deep and musically rich broken beat business of "Break In My Back". Captain Over's "No-Look Nutmeg" is a suitably bass-heavy bruk workout laden with 8-bit electronics, while Xtra Brux's "Somebody" brilliant joins the dots between broken beat and two-step garage. Elsewhere, Trev's "For You Around Me" is a sumptuous chunk of summery and soulful dancefloor bliss, while Ishfaq's "Hypnosis No 9" is jazzy, synth-heavy and wayward in the best possible way.

  1. Nightrunning (4:01)
  2. Omo (4:23)
Review: As a member of Stepak-Takraw, Yoichi Takeuch has spent much of his career crafting material heavily influenced by 1970s Afrobeat. On this debut solo single he takes a different approach, crafting warm, sun-kissed and blissful grooves with the benefit of what sounds like an MPC workstation. Check first A-side "Nightrunning", a dreamy and decidedly Balearic affair where chopped-up vocal snippets and guitar motifs rise above a hip-hop-goes-polyrhythmic groove. There's a slightly jazzier feel to flipside "Omo", whose slack, post Tony Allen drum break is layered with chanted childrens' vocals, sun-bright guitar flourishes and toasty, head-in-the-clouds chords. It's hard to describe, but really rather good.

Review: The in house label at West London vinyl emporium Honest Jon's has really hit on a rich strain of releases for the electronic music connoisseur this year with that Sotofett album, the Villalobos and Kassem Mosse remixes of Insalar and Simone White respectively and now this gem. Datura Mystic is a wonderful soundclash between the unheralded Drums Of Wareika Hills Sounds and Tapes, a London based artist whose unique brand of cassette manipulations have featured on Jahtari, Sex tags Amfibia and Astro Dynamics among others. Quite separate to anything anyone else is bigging up right now, both the title cut and the accompanying Dub roll to their own beat and its great music to soak up in the spring sun!

  4. In My Life (5:49)
Review: It's already been a great year for Kaidi Tatham, whose summer album "It's A World Before You" on First Word remains one of our favourite full-length sets of 2018. He's in great form once again on this follow-up EP for the 2000 Black imprint he co-helms with pal Dego. All four tracks bristle with his signature jazz-funk focused synthesizer solos and Herbie Hancock style flourishes, as well as plenty of sweaty, floor-friendly broken beats. Killer dancefloor thrills come in the shape of opener "Freddie Can't Run Away" (it's very reminiscent of his 2000s work as Agent K) and "Is Crimbo Really Here", while "But You Bring It Up" and standout "In My Life" both explore slower, deeper and more musically intricate pastures.

Review: After offering up EPs titled "Hard Times" and "Changing Times" in 2017, Kaidi Tatham returns to First Word to complete the trilogy with "Serious Times". Of course, the music contained within the EP's tightly packed grooves is as joyous, rich as intricate as ever. Check, for example, "Don't Cry Now", a samba-soaked, sun-kissed affair that wraps harmonic freestyle vocals, twinkling electric piano lines and darting jazz-funk bass around a seriously shuffling groove. Tatham's much-discussed jazz-funk influences are once again given an airing on "Sugar", while his fine piano work takes pride of place on instrumental hip-hop head-nodder "Zallom". Best of all, though, is opener "Cost of Living", which emphatically weaves together all of these strands and more besides.

Review: It would seem we're back on the Christmas card list... 2000 Black supergroup comprising the likes of Dego, Mensah and original Bugz members Lord and Tatham have been slowly ramping up their releases again and this year has seen their largest output yet. Following "Two Way Here One Way Go", "Simmering" proffers three more sublime and silky instrumentals from deeply decorated foursome. "Simmering" is a tight jazz funk jam with a sprung guitar groove spine and a blissful switch into soothing flutes midway, "Private Life" flips for a sunnyside digidub, all spacious and rippling with its breezy keys while "Climb The Sun" brings us back to the funk root note but with rising synth insistency that's bruk to the bone. Simmering now, boiling tomorrow...

  2. Les La-Bas (3:05)
Review: Ninja Tune know how to come up with the goods for RSD, and they've truly hit the nail on head with this epic two-tracker from legendary French jazz bassist Henri Sexier, reimagined by the mind of Bonobo. The original cut of "Les La-Bas", which resides on the B-side, is a wonderfully loose blend of raw guitar strings and violin cello strings held together by a delicious beat jingle; the Bonobo remix manages to carry that musical power onto an effective house swing that ends up somewhere in the region of a Larry Levan classic. Don't miss it!

Review: Two years ago, Thomas Xu announced himself via a fine debut 12" on Sound Signature where he shared vinyl space with Julion De'Angelo. Here he launches his own label, Steady Flight Circle, via a first full solo EP of his own. It's really rather good, with Xu combining spacey jazz-funk synths, emotive chord progressions and rich musicality with beats that tend towards the jazzy, broken and off-kilter. All three tracks feel loose, warm and immediate, as if they were jammed-out in one take. While they clearly weren't, this improvised feel is hugely endearing. From the sounds of "Different Widsoms", Xu will clearly be a producer to watch in the months and years ahead.

  1. Final Fight (2:58)
  2. Bowzer's Ballad (3:28)
Review: Thundercat's superb "Final Fight", a digital-only single earlier in the year, finally comes to vinyl. Sneakily, Brainfeeder only released it in Japan, hence the limited number of copies that have made it to Europe. It's worth the investment, though, because the song is one of the American's most endearing to date - a dewy-eyed chunk of eccentric, off-kilter soul where multi-tracked, blue-eyed soul style vocals, glistening jazz guitar arpeggios and fizzing synth sounds ride an aquatic, futuristic bassline. On the flip you'll find another previously digital-only release, "Bowzer's Ballad". This is an endearing, eight-bit tribute to former Nintendo boss Hiroshi Yamauchi. It was written in the weeks following his death, and features waves of electric piano and Game Boy soundtrack style synth solos.

Review: The third album from Brainfeeder soul man Thundercat gets the coloured vinyl treatment. His haziest, softest and most consistent set so far, his falsetto dulcets wrap around a whirlwind of styles that are tailor made for vinyl. Sloping and sliding into each other all the way, from the slippery wah-wah guitar disco of "Them Changes" to the Plantlife-style funk of "Lone Wolf & Club" to the trippy ambience of "That Moment", we're gradually moved slowly, softly and sweetly throughout.

Kaytranada adds a loose Plant Life style swing, long-time Snoop confidant Battlecat retains more of the synth juiciness while adding his own west coast funk signature while Jean Tonique flips the disco bird with a lavish almost Balearic twist that you could instantly imagine Greg Wilson or Luke Solomon playing. All complete with instrumentals this is a very well dressed package. Dapper.

Review: Luca Murgia is Two Thou - an alias which has seen him land intriguing releases on Burek, Fields & Forests and his own Gifted Culture label. Now he's been snapped up by Uzuri with some star-gazing cuts that straddle broken beat, deep house and something more altogether cosmic. "Clavinet Discourse" is the consummate lead track, a true showstopper with astral synth flex and a sharp, snappy beat. "Talking Song" has a more pronounced deep house bump and leads that wouldn't sound out of place on Strictly Jaz Unit - the dub version does away with the leads if you want something subtler. "Thousands Of Chimes Together" completes the set with a spiritual throwdown to invigorate any open-minded dancefloor.

Casimir has appeared on the label once before, but this is Hirst's first credited outing - not that you can tell as she freewheels over fiery, politically-charged ballads like "Don't Let Them" and dazzling uptempo cut "Security". There's a lot of moods touched on, making "These Days" a rich and rewarding listen from start to finish. Whether it's crooked noir-inflected bug-outs or laid back rollers, Casimir and Hirst have made a beautiful partnership on this thoroughly contemporary jazz set.

Review: It's commonly known if you cut Will 'Quantic' Holland, he'd bleed in little Tru Thoughts logo-shaped droplets, such is the bond between the artist and label. The latest Quantic long-player for the South Coast label, A New Constellation, finds the Bogota-based musician leading a hand-picked selection of musicians called The Western Transient. Their focus? To realise a set of new compositions paying homage to the rich, lively and intimate quality of the classic soul and jazz recordings. That Holland should choose to follow his last LP, the explosive Magnetica, with 10 tracks of more traditional jazz and funk proves he's still not happy to stand still as Quantic despite having a hand in well over ten long players.

Review: Hailing from New Orleans, Tank & The Bangas have a history of joining the dots between hip-hop, soul, funk and the city's horn-powered jazz history. "Green Balloon", the delayed sequel to impressive 2013 debut "Think Tank", delivers a similarly impressive blend of past, present and future fusion, with highlights including the off-kilter hip-hop soul of "Spaceships", the warm and woozy Rhodes-powered shuffle of "Ants", the quirky jauntiness of "Forgetfulness" and the Fugees style soulful deepness of "I Don't Get High". Lauded jazz pianist Robert Glasper is amongst a high class list of guest musicians, with his contributions - particularly the loose and languid live hip-hop of "Lazy Daze" - counting among the album's standout moments.

  3. Bogovi (7:42)
  4. Trouble (11:58)
  5. Outro (5:00)
Review: Following two fine teaser singles on Malka Tuti, Tapan (AKA Belgrade-based producers Nebosja Bogdanovic and Goran Simonosk) are finally ready to unleash their debut album, Europa. A genuinely unique proposition, the set sees them flit between mind-altering Middle Eastern dub-jazz (the trippy title track), delay-laden late night soundscapes (the brilliant "In My Heart"), woozy post-punk dystopia ("Bogovi"), percussion-rich, horn-heavy weirdness ("Trouble") and the kind of dubwise, other-worldly fare that we'd once have expected to hear from early '80s Bristolian bands such as Maximum Joy. It's naturally hugely atmospheric, but more impressive than that is the duo's imaginative approach. While the influences are easy to spot, describing the results is pleasingly tricky.
