  1. Azul (Max Graef remix) (3:37)
  2. Azul (Contours remix) (7:34)
  3. Azul (Glenn Astro remix) (4:51)
Review: One third of Azymuth and an all-round legend Ivan Conti is set to drop his first solo album in over 20 years next year. And here's a wee teaser with three on-point versions from three exceptional soul craftsmen: Max Graef goes on the cloud hopping dreamy jazz tip, allowing Ivan's brushed drums to shimmer in the all the right spaces, Contours flex hard on a classic bruk vibe where the main players are Conti's swing and the juicy fruit bassline while Glenn Astro gets lively with a heavily shaking afro rhythm and sweeping p-funk chords. Bring on the album.

  2. She Can't Love You (Egyptian Lover mix) (6:28)
  3. Maxx E (6:38)
Review: Under the Danced Til Midnight alias, DJ Andy Anderson has always produced music that eschews easy categorization. His two previous 12" singles successfully blended elements of funk, soul, disco, hip-hop, house and Afrobeat. This madcap, all-that-counts-is-the-dancefloor feel is continued on "She Can't Love You", which laces Ijeoma's soulful, R&B style vocal over a backing track that variously doffs a cap to fuzzy funk, boogie, breakbeat and disco-house. Similar could be said about the more breakbeat-minded "Maxx E", which feels like a reworked instrumental dub of the title track. Speaking of reworks, the EPs's highlight is arguably Egyptian Lover's punchy electro remake of "She Can't Love You".

Review: If you've not yet copped the debut album from Cardiff twosome Darkhouse Family, The Offering, we'd suggest tracking down a copy - it was one of last year's most overlooked beats albums, joyously joining the dots between hip-hop, jazz and neo-soul. Here First Word offers up "An Extra Offering" featuring a quintet of new remixes of album tracks. The quality threshold naturally remains high throughout, with Kaidi Tatham's synth bass-propelled, head-nodding rework of "The Accession" providing an early high watermark. Naturally, DJ Spinna's two reworks are both superb. His "Galactic Soul" version of "Another World" is a string-laden, house tempo synth-soul treat, while the "Galactic Funk" remix of "Just So You Know" brilliantly wraps spacey synth bass and sweet soul vocals around a slipped, off-kilter hip-hop rhythm.

Review: Yes Eglo! Alex Nut and crew turn to two elder statesmen of London beat science in Dego and Kaidi Tatham for a killer induction into the art of crafting 'broken beat bullets'. For those who don't possess the necessary knowledge, Dego is the most familiar handle of Dennis McFarlane, founding member of 4Hero and responsible for so much good music over the years, and Tatham has an equally important role in the whole Broken Beat movement, being an integral member of the Bugz In the Attic collective. The pair have worked together previously on numerous occasions and they are on top form here with lead track "Ankle Injury" demonstrating a perfect balance of melody and crafty rhythm. Imagine Theo and Floating Points collaborating and your heads in the right spot to enjoy this track and "Acting Up On That Shit Don't Count" which is the sort of music you could imagine RAMP to be making if they were on the rise today. Do check the sumptuous piano and Rhodes vibes on final cut "Carrots & Sesame"!!

  2. Welcome (2:22)
  3. Funky Overdose (1:34)
Review: Soul auteur Jonathan Diggs Duke returns to one of his older EPs for a timely reissue. Originally released in 2015, just after his critically acclaimed debut album on Giles Peterson's Brownswood, the three tracks catch Diggs at his most flighty and free-thinking; "Ambition Addiction" jumps and rolls like a tightly coiled jazz spring before hurling us into the deep harmonic soulful blue of "Welcome" and "Funky Overdose" lives up to its name with its off beat magic, tightly plucked guitar and staccato vocals. Addictive.

  1. Duel Of The Iron Mic
  2. Bring The Ruckus
Review: Once again, El Michels Affair is back with the second instalment of their highly acclaimed "Shaolin Series", bridging the widening gap between hip hop and instrumental soul. After the success of "Cream", the band got back in the studio and churned out two more interpretations of essential wu-bangers! The A side is an instrumental version of the landmark track "Bring The Ruckus" from the Wu Tang's breakthrough album "Enter The 36 Chambers". Stripping the track back to the bare bones, this gives a more sinister vibe to the track. Over on the flip GZA's "Duel Of The Iron Mic" get the respectful treatment, adding strings, horns and original vocal drops from the original. Essential.

  6. By The Time I Get To Phoenix (feat Lee Fields)
Review: It's been five years since Truth & Soul's octet gave us the incredible Wu Tang version album. It's been two years since they last dropped a single, too. However the band is back and their trademark cinematic soul is richer and more emotive than ever. From the instant the trembling flute and guitar open with the cuddly, ultimately positive "Kiddy Ditty" we're whisked on a largely instrumental journey that flings us through the wild west ("Little House"), soul's early JB chapters ("This Song For You") and straight up NY low-slung funk ("A Little Sloppy"). Climaxing with a Lee Fields featured "By The Time I Get To Phoenix", Loose Change is a kind reminder of just how accomplished and creative El Michels Affair are. No change there, then.

  1. Slow Mo Tuesdays

  3. 1210s, 303s & 404s
  4. Low End Massacre
Review: Croatian producer El Nino Andres is steadily building up an impressive arsenal of disco and deep house heaters on his own Jackie Brown label, having previously been running the Hija De Colombia imprint. On this fourth slab he pushes his sound into even more intriguing places. Opening track "Slow Mo Tuesdays" lets things roll out on a decidedly dusty tip carried by off-kilter drums. "Riviera Blues" stands out thanks to its tough 80s-styled drums and warm soulful melodics. "Low End Massacre" meanwhile gets choppy in the edit and makes a devilishly good job of riding the samples.

Planet B (12")
Cat: NUT 003. Rel: 01 May 18
  1. Planet B (feat Liz Elensky) (9:04)
  2. Lions Of Judah (live At Cafe OTO) (11:12)
Review: Planet B is the first release of the year for London spiritual jazz outfit Emanative, and musically is said to follow in the spirit of Arthur Russell's Dinosaur L project, no wave band ESG, and Sun Ra. This release takes them in a slightly different direction than previous, with the leftfield title track encompassing post punk, afrobeat, disco and jazz. For the 11 minute B side epic "Lions Of Judah" they took a live version of the Ahmed Abdullah-written track (by Steve Reid & The Legendary Master Brotherhood) which was recorded live at London's famous Cafe OTO - an institution for experimental live music and free jazz. The version has become a Gilles Peterson favourite and a regular on his 6Music and Worldwide FM shows.

New Day (7")
Cat: JAZZ 45001. Rel: 31 May 18
  1. New Day (feat Ahu) (3:55)
  2. New Day (instrumental) (3:56)
Review: Ever since their first record launched on Futuristica Music, back in 2008, Emanative have been quietly shaping the contemporary jazz-dance landscape - an achievement for which they are rarely accredited to. Hopefully, we can change some of those misconceptions by telling you just how special this new EP for Jazz45 is sounding! The opening "New Day" features the soulful vocals of Ahu over a rolling, breaks-centric groove with plenty of melodic quirks and, of course, the unstoppable euphoric power of the flute; the flipside's instrumental allows you to get even closer to the music constructed by Emanative, which is undoubtedly the outfit's long-running forte.

  4. Yermande (Prophet 5 rhythm) (6:08)
Review: Hardwax don Mark Ernestus harvests the first fruits of his collaborative seeds sewn in Senegal with a clan of sabar drummers with the superbly titled Ndagga Rhythm Force project. The results on the first mix of "Yermande" are as deeply rhythmic and percussive as you'd imagine, as drums take centre stage and the dubby vocals lie waiting in the sonic ether. Truly meditative stuff from the Ndagga Rhythm Force. Remix-wise the instrumental gives the drums an even more prominent position while the Prophet 5 versions add dense, tightly plucked guitar and clipped synth textures to the lead melody.

Lamb Ji (12")
Cat: NDAGGA 22. Rel: 10 Dec 15
  1. Lamb Ji (with Mbene Diatta Seck) (8:04)
  2. Lamb Rhythm (7:57)
Review: Berlin's master beat specialist, electronic dub pioneer, African music enthusiast, Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound member, and Hardwax co-founder, Mark Ernestus, is back with a new Ndagga bullet - and yes, that list was exhaustive on purpose. The myth of a man has turned his attentions from techno to African beat music over the last few years, and the releases have been amongst our favourites within the 'outernational' scene. "Lamb Ji" is as electric and magnetic as you'd expect, full of life and mystique thanks to its complex percussive patterns, hazy production, and lamenting tribal vocals - a super charger on the system. "Lamb Rhythm" is basically a version of the original; more dubby, more stripped-back and with no vocals. Powerful stuff, as always.

  1. Breakthrough (7" version) (4:20)
  2. Breakthrough Beats (4:16)
Review: Albert's Favourites is a south London studio, production family and label. Home to several collaborations and solo projects from the creators. It was founded by the namesake's grandson Adam Scrimshire with Jonny Drop and Dave Koor of The Expansions - who indeed present the label's next release here. When they self released their first single in 2013 - the laid-back jazz funk of "Lavender", it quickly gained strong support from soul and rare-groove aficionados including Kenny Dope, Dom Servini, Patrick Forge and Andy Smith. The band have been constantly busy, playing around Europe with legendary British-Ghanaian soul singer Andrew Ashong and the upcoming talent Connie Constance. Conceived in a barn somewhere deep in Suffolk, "Breakthrough" represents a moment when the band felt they had a much clearer direction with their writing. A searing hybrid of jazz and funk with a positively hip hop backbone.

  1. Mother Mother (Theo Parrish Translation)
  2. Mother Mother (Theo Parrish Translation instrumental)
Review: New Zealand funk and reggae troupe Fat Freddy's Drop call on the man Theo Parrish to rework "Mother Mother" from last year's third LP Blackbird on the first of two planned remix 12" singles - watch out for the second featuring the handiwork of Cosmo, Yam Who and Ashley Beedle. In original form, "Mother Mother" was already quite a long track, clocking in at just under nine minutes and though this new rendition from the Sound Signature boss is not that much longer he does add his signature (sorry) twist to the track. There's also an instrumental on the B Side for those that aren't partial to Joe Dukie's distinctive tones but love the Parrish production.

Kuiper (12'')
Cat: FP 2. Rel: 18 Jul 16
  1. Kuiper (17:45)
  2. For Marmish (part 2) (14:04)
Review: Having co-founded the now mythical Eglo Records, Sam Shepherd aka Floating Points has, more recently, begun to release his music through his own Pluto label, an imprint with a clear vision from the music to the artwork. Moreover, the label also gives Shepherd room to explore outside of his more traditional housey framework, and the majority of the releases on Pluto have consisted of wild and diverse shreds of broken beat and nu jazz. "Kuiper" is his latest excursion and it's a psychedelic journey through high-powered percussion and airy synth experimentations all wrapped up in a suave jazz coating. "For Mamish (part 2)" is something altogether sparser and less concrete, but there is still plenty of movement amid Shepherd's crystal sounds and Balearic riffs in what sounds like the perfect new age sort of amalgamation. Excellent.

  4. Body (Zo! remix) (3:31)
Review: London soulful house label Makin' Moves (brought to you by Matt Langrish-Smith & DJ Jamesey) bring the heat once again with these awesome remixes of The Foreign Exchange: an internet-spawned collaboration between Dutch producer Nicolay and US rapper/singer Phonte Coleman from Little Brother. "Body" is taken from their recent album Tales From The Land Of Milk & Honey and it is a wonderful slice of modern soul that calls to mind the work of Kaidi Tatham or Vikter Duplaix. The remixes on here work that extra bit of magic though and who better than NYC's finest DJ Spinna to deliver the goods on his deep and emotive remix. His second offering, the "Ride It Out dub" dives even deeper and does exactly what it says on the tin on this version, aimed squarely at late night dancefloors.

Review: Following the re-release of his 2013 album The Swimmer, Cinematic Orchestra's Phil France provides the delicate parts of his modern classic piano composition "Joy Of Brass" to card-carrying Gondwana fan Mr Scruff and gets two exceptional remixes in return: the main remix shuffles with a soft, slow lolloping jack and some beautiful yearning chords soaring over the top in an almost Nordic cosmic style. His Bumpy Dub, meanwhile, taps into the bruk renaissance with a smoky halftime break and a bassline that borders on KOAN territory. In a nutshell? Scruffy's turned in two blinders here.

Review: Gerardo's first new material since last year's album Movement, the "Olympia" EP sees the Milano musician return to his club roots with five of his most floor-focused cuts. From the Shiffrin-style guitars and Jorge Ben licks of the dramatic cinematic title track we head deep into the dance by way of the cadent Latin soul of "Tin Tin Deo", the Hammond-squeezing "Talking Sticks" and the percussion-primed heads-down Arabic charms of "East Breeze". We climax with "The Obsession", a thumping drum-focussed samba number that tips a big nod to the likes of Master At Work.

Review: Schema's founding schemer Frisina unleashes a dubbed out doublet of heavily percussive grooves. "Passion Dance" is a deeply hypnotic affair as wicked weaves of congas and timpani overlay to create a robust physical sensation that's complemented by swooning minor chords that sweep with soft subtlety. "Space In Time" is deeper again; with thick dub techniques applied with the rhythmic spine, we're invited to forge our own paths through the mystical fog. Once you've swathed through the otherworldly texture, you'll be amazed at the sonic light that awaits you.
