Lemonlime
Lemonlime (12")
Cat: SS 059. Rel: 21 Mar 16
Deep House
  1. Lemonlime (10:25)
  2. Sof N Thik (5:55)
Review: Leron Carson may not be the best-known Midwest producer, but he has history. Carson's first release came way back in 2001, with Theo Parrish putting out a track he'd recorded way back in 1987 and has appeared on Sound Signature intermittently over the years. This new 12" from Carson for Theo's label is HEAVY! "Lemonline" is a deliciously breezy concoction, with Carson's jazzy piano riffs working in perfect unison with bouncy, Latin-influenced drum rhythms. Flipside "Sofnthik", on the other hand, sounds like a previously unheard 1980s Chicago deep house concoction, with warm, loved-up chords swirling around a clattering drum machine groove. Whether it was recorded 30 years ago is unknown, but it certainly boasts a similar lo-fi, analogue feel.

Review: LeRon Carson is one of the many unheralded but still legendary producers out of the American Midwest. His next move takes him to Theo Parrish's mighty Sound Signature for a new album of his textbook dusty drums and lived-in house grooves. Of course, they are all linked in some way, left of centre of experimental in how they are assembled. That's the case right from the off with the scruffy drums and twanging synth lead of 'Under The Conditions.' What sounds like a speech from Martin Luther King is sampled on '72nd & Oglesby' over a sweet of raw, tense beats and elsewhere the bittersweet synths of 'Bismarck Nite' strike a different but equally powerful note.

The 1987 EP
Cat: SS 012. Rel: 21 Aug 01
Techno
  1. Leon Carson - "China Trax" (8:32)
  2. Theo Parrish - "Insane Asylum" (9:57)
Review: Oh yes, we love it when Theo represses some of his most sought after tracks and this one is particularly well-timed. Leron Carson is still an unknown figure, a kid who used to make viciously raw and futuristic techno tracks in the late 1980's! "China Trax", alongside the rest of his tracks on a different Sound Signature double 12", is totally ahead of its time and if it was truly made in 1987 then it is nothing short of amazing. Of course, it's not just the year it was made in that's interesting but also the fact that it's music without an age, able to be appreciated by any generation of techno freaks. Theo's own "Insane Asylum" on the flipside is also pretty monumental; rigged beats, off-kilter grooves and that familiar spontaneity so heavily associated to the label. RECOMMENDED.

Deep House
  1. Adam Rock Dissed!! (4:38)
  2. Moths In Wallets (feat Mr Mensah) (5:07)
  3. Backchat For Toprock (5:18)
Review: Dego and Kaidi on Sound Signature whut???? Here's a partnership that makes perfect sense! The West London legends bring their signature blend of soul and brukked up grit to Theo Parrish's label across three stellar cuts resulting in a 12" that will remain long in the box. Lead track "Adam Rock Dissed" sets the tone, gliding out of the grooves with impeccably placed drums snapping away loosely as Kaidi lets loose with his magical fingers on keys. Next up, "Moths In Wallets" rolls forward and fat on a lazy breakbeat with the vibe enhanced by the low bass rumble and rich, rich keys. This might be our favourite cut on the 12" though B-side production "Backchat for Toprock" runs it close. Live drums get ripped up hard, rocking to their own broken step as Dego and Kaidi slowly tease out some heart wrenching chords amidst a flurry of heavy piano. The masters are in session, pay attention!

  11. Don't Put Your Hat Where Your Hand Can't Reach (2:20)
Review: Here's something to set the pulse racing: a collaborative debut album (on Sound Signature, no less) from London broken beat veterans Dego and Kaidi Tatham. As with their previous joint releases on 2000 Black, Rush Hour, Eglo and, of course, Sound Signature, it's the duo's love of rich, jazz-fuelled musicality, sun-kissed melodies and loose, languid rhythms that shines through. There are naturally nods towards disco, boogie, jazz-funk, Afrobeat, hip-hop and classic "bruk", with a stellar cast list of guest musicians and vocalists swinging by to lend a hand. If Herbie Hancock decamped to Ladbroke Grove and made an album with Bugz In The Attic, it would probably sound like this. In our book, that's a very good thing indeed.

Review: Jazz-wise deep house and downtempo producer Hanna has a string of fine albums to his name stretching back to the tail end of the '90s. Bless, though, is his first full-length since 2008, and sees the Cleveland, Ohio man transfer to Theo Parrish's legendary Sound Signature imprint. Each of the album's ten tracks comes dripping in hazy, late night soul, as Hanna smoothly shuffles between hazy nu-jazz explorations and various strains of sensual deep house. For the DJs there are plenty of floor-friendly moments, while the inclusion of a string of groovier downtempo workouts should please the home listening posse.

Review: Detroit native Jason Hogans will not be a familiar name to many, despite the fact he has been putting out music - albeit sporadically - for 20 odd years. A release on Theo Parrish's hero-worshipped Sound Signature will always put you in the spotlight, though, especially when it's as good as this. The artist explores deep Motor City house, percussive broken beats and that shamanistic, off-grid sound that label head Theo Parrish is such a master of. Standouts include the airy, spacious beat work of 'Favorite Coffee Mug' and steamy post-jungle concoction that is 'For My Solids.'

Review: New from Sound Signature is "I Only Have Eyes For You", from the multi talented percussionist Jerrald James (aka Jerry The Cat). Jerry aptly demonstrates his own production prowess in covering the Flamingos' "I only Have Eyes For You". He smartly chose Genevieve Marantette to provide vocals on this piece, and she gives her best recorded performance to date.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
  1. Love Is War For Miles (8:46)
  2. 7 Bar Thing (9:52)
Review: Back in 2016, percussionist Myele Manzanza impressed with a killer live album - recorded at famed Los Angeles jazz spot Blue Whale - on DJ Gilla's First Word Records. Almost three years on he returns to the spotlight via a surprise release on Theo Parrish's lauded Sound Signature imprint. Like its predecessor, it sounds like both tracks on "Love Is War For Miles" were recorded live. The A-side title track sets the tone, with pulsing, increasingly intense drums and piano working their magic around an unrelenting, two-note bassline. Flipside "7 Bar Thing" is a little more relaxed in feel, but no less percussive, as Manzanza showcases his drumming versatility on a cut rich in funk-fuelled double bass and swelling, decidedly intergalactic synths.

Bring Me Down
Cat: SS 065. Rel: 20 Jan 17
Deep House
  1. Bring Me Down (9:32)
  2. Bring Me Down (Theo Parrish translation) (9:35)
Review: Here's something to get excited about: a cracking new cut from Detroit deep house legend Alton Miller, backed with a 'Sound Signature' translation from the equally revered Theo Parrish. Miller's version of "Bring Me Down", is something of a treat: a sparkling, starry deep house epic that's blessed with immaculate vocals from soul chanteuse Maurissa Rose. Parrish's translation is equally as stretched out and similarly enjoyable, but is far looser and dustier in feel, with warmer bass and beats that naturally tend towards the jazzier. It's naturally more in keeping with Parrish's work than Miller's, but retains enough of the latter's touches to be counted as a fine remix.

Review: Sound Signature end 2013 how they started it; with a fresh slab of Theo Parrish goodness! Whilst the Dance of the Medusa EP issued back in January was Theo in marauding beat down mode, it seems the respected Detroit based producer is in a much mellower mood here. For example, the title track on the Long Walk In Sun 12" is the sort of mid-tempo production that would feature in an early doors Floating Points set at Plastic People. Complementing this, "Strawberry Dragon" features a more prominent display of Parrish's widely regarded skills at chopping percussion, but it's the resplendent instrumentation that stands out.

  2. Tympanic Warfare
Review: Theo Parrish lays down a marker for a long overdue fifth album, apparently due out later this year, with the sublime Footwork 12". Named in reference to the dance as opposed to the breakneck offshoot of Ghetto House, "Footwork" is a sublime slab of Theo with many of his trademark production touches. Think lightly brushed percussion, meandering bassline that juts out with an odd funk, and subtle yet sumptuous musical touches, all topped off by a gruff "let me see your footwork baby" croon. Those Theo fans out there that like the man to get a bit rugged will be all over "Tympanic Warfare" too, where off the grid polyrhythms cannon around the channels, augmented by an ugly bassline and dexterous keys.

Review: The roots of Sound Signature are revisited in fine style with the first of three essential Theo Parrish represses this week! Originally released back towards the tail end of 1998, Roots Revisited is Theo in full on percussion mode, perfectly balancing the rhythmic elements with his innate understanding of true soul and how to implement it. Lead track "Dan Ryan" is one of those deeply meditative Theo cuts that feels like it can probably seep into infinity without any danger of losing its charm, whilst the Liberation Mix of "Walking Through The Sky" will provide a bone of contention for the most feverish of Theo followers out there.

Review: During its lifespan, sadly departed London club Plastic People had it all: an intimate space to dance, an astonishingly good audiophile sound system, and a crew of resident DJs that included the mighty Theo Parrish. The Detroiter's sets there, which ran for a minimum of six hours, have naturally become the stuff of legend. Three years after the club closed, Parrish has decided to release the recording of his final set there - a thrillingly free-wheeling, three-disc voyage that dizzily and gleefully joins the dots between jazz, soul, disco, funk, deep house, acid, techno and much more besides. The three discs capture Parrish at his most lively and esoteric, providing a musical journey that will delight dancers and armchair listeners alike.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. In Motion (11:23)
  2. Don't Play (feat Ava) (10:07)
Review: Theo Parrish is one of those characters who manages to unite lovers of both house and techno, indeed producing offerings that seem to make the distinction utterly redundant. How does he doe it? Well, if this pair of new tracks are anything to go on, it's the simple trick of making tracks that combine the soufulness and rootsy earthiness of house with a trippy sense of the futuristic and psychedelic that elevates them out of the ordinary.
Take, for instance 'In Motion's simple piano stabs and the subsequent off kilter groove that builds up around them. Or, equally, the cheeky bass keyboard manoeuvres that form the backbone of 'Don't Play' featuring Ava, funky enough to be Stevie Wonder but then matched with caustic, scything hi-hats that have more than a hint of the surreal and robotic about them. Best of all, it doesn't feel like a compromise, it feels like a full on creation that acknowledges both traditions but refuses to follow either slavishly.

Review: After six years, Theo Parrish has finally decided to treat us to a new full-length excursion. That in itself is cause for celebration, because the Motor City veteran has a style all of his own that fuses a myriad of musical influences, genuinely sounds like nothing else, and is extremely difficult to recreate. That trademark sound is naturally at the very core of Wuddajii, which sees the Detroit legend effortlessly slide between bruk-up business ('Radar Detector'), free-jazz funk (the superb title track), hip-hop influenced beatdown jazziness ('Hambone Cappuccino'), sleazy late-night beat science ('Angry Purple Birds' and 'All Your Boys Are Biters), typically epic slabs of deep house soulfulness ('This is For You'), and mind-altering voyages into electronic jazz spiritualism ('Knew Better Do Better').

Review: The inimitable Theo Parrish is in a class of one. His brand of music is impossible to categorise as it draws on so many unique sounds in so many unique ways. This new album is another spellbinding affair that takes scuffed up house rhythms and intertwines them with freeform percussive patterns and off-grid synths that get pulled apart then rebuilt before your very ears. It is experimental music with an improvised jazz mindset that can range from complex and dense tapestries like 'Radar Detector' to the more upbeat and playful 'Hennyweed Buckdance' via fucked up drum sketches like 'All Your Boys Are Biters.'

Review: On his latest expansive double-pack, Theo Parrish has decided to dip into his epic back catalogue. The four featured tracks are taken from two sought-after, hard to find EPs released in 1997 and 2001 respectively. Opener 'Smile' is arguably one of the Detroiter's most magnificent musical moments of all time: an epic slab of drowsy Motor City deep house built around idiosyncratic drum programming, ultra-deep chords, toasty bass and an effects-laden vocal snippet. 'Lost Keys' is a breezier and looser affair marked out by Latin style piano motifs, jazzy house beats and tactile bass, while 'Dreamer's Blues' is a languid, percussion-and-electric piano rich number that tends towards the hazy and jazzy. Finally, 'Lost Angel' is an ultra-deep affair whose spacey chords seem to stretch out eternity.

  1. Feel Free To Be Who You Need To Be
  2. 360@1:29ON696 (feat Dumminie Deporres - full version)
Review: Sound Signature present two of the classier moments from Mr Parrish's Sketches album in their rightful form - either side of a nice loud twelve inch. Lead track "Feel Free To Be Who You Need To Be" is Theo's most eminently danceable excursion for quite some time; arising from a 23rd century Funkadelic intro into a subaqueous Detroit electro meets funk swing that builds expertly. It's weirdly reminiscent of a retooled version of "Booty (La La)" from Bugz In The Attic with the afro excesses twisted inside out to lean heavily on the robot vocoder flex. On the flip long time collaborator Dumminie Deporres features on the don't even bother pronouncing "360@1:29ON696" which stretches a twelve minute jazz techno odyssey elegantly across the vinyl - vintage stuff from the Sound Signature boss.

Review: Apart from the obvious love for his musical talents, both as a producer and as a DJ, one of the reasons why we love Theo Parrish so damn much is his repressing policy. Unlike some of his peers, the man has no problem in repressing in-demand Sound Signatures from the past, and this time it's number 32 that receives a much-welcomed resurrection. The EP features singer Dummine Depores, first on the utterly hummable and soulful "Chemistry" track, and then on "Untitled One", a classically off-kilter Parrish number filled to the brim with sampling goodness and even a distant set of guitar riffs! Killers.

Review: In his usual no-nonsense fashion, Theo Parrish has not said much about the surprise release of Gentrified Love Part 2, despite it being his first fresh material since 2014. The EP features contributions from two of the Detroit's legends oldest friends: Rotating Assembly member Duminie DePorres, and original Slum Village member Waajeed. A-side "Warrior Code" is a quietly foreboding proposition, with spiraling electronics, jammed keys and cosmic chords riding a chunky, West London style broken beat groove. Flip for the altogether brighter and breezier "Leave The Funk To Us", a jaunty and jazz-wise 4/4 excursion blessed with some superb, Herbie Hancock style jazz-funk keys.

  1. Ghetto Proposal (feat Kitten Kuroi & John Douglas) (7:42)
  2. Ghetto Proposal (instrumental - feat Amp Fiddler) (10:23)
Review: Theo Parrish's Gentrified Love series seems to be a collaborative affair. Part two, available separately, contained hook-ups with fellow Detroiters Wajeed and Duminie Deporres. "Ghetto Proposal", which is available in Vocal and Instrumental versions, features sublime contributions from another Motor City legend, veteran modern soul man Amp Fiddler. It's something of a deliciously trippy affair, underpinned by a freaky, delay-heavy groove, fireside-warm Rhodes keys, meandering trumpet lines and - on the vocal version, at least, drowsy female vocals. Both artists jazz influence is clear, particularly in the crunchy percussion hits that begin to dominate as the track progresses. Interestingly, the instrumental moves a little further towards jazzy broken beat territory.

Review: Sound Signature kick off the new year with a pleasing reissue of some smoky soul from Theo Parrish's outlet for his most jazzy tendencies. On "Seasons Of My Life" Billy Lo croons over a muted trumpet while a surprisingly rough stomp gets hammered out of a live kit. It's a dreamy, sunkissed jam with all the loose, free-flowing elements you would expect from something with Parrish's stamp on it. Marcellus Pittman helps out on "Feedback", as a sparser, meandering groove does the nasty with some restrained keys. For that Detroit beatdown flavour away from the dancefloor, this is as good as it gets.

Review:  been four years since Chicago producer Andres "Specter" Ordonez pitched up on Theo Parrish's Sound Signature label with the smoky, bleep-laden killer "Pipe Bomb". Here, he returns to the Detroit veteran's imprint, bringing with him three more slabs of fuzzy analogue oddness. "The Gooch" is the real killer, a 10-minute freakout that sounds like a jazz band making murky techno with just analogue machinery to play with - all wonky electronics, subtle acid and loose but relentless cymbals. The bolder "Zodiak" impresses with its 303-driven aggression, while "Body Blow" sounds like Hieroglyphic Being jamming with Buddy Miles. On Mars. That's gotta be good, right?
