Review: Cool as you like jazz cats Badbadnotgood have more than done their bit in helping to shape the contemporary jazz revival with a number of great albums and even a fine compilation of their inspirations and influences. IV is one of their most acclaimed in recent times which is why it now gets a reissue on double white gatefold vinyl. Guests Sam Herring, Colin Stetson and Kevin Celstin amongst more all feature, as do plenty of the US group's lush broken beats and nu-jazz instrumentals. Well worth coping if you missed out the first time around.

Progressive Roots (Deep mix) (14:48)
Progressive Roots Congo (3:45)
Review: The deep house magician that is Joaquin Joe Claussell is back on his own majestic Sacred Rhythm with a bunch of, well, sacred rhythms. As always they are addend with his usual sophisticated mix of jazzy melodies, steamy drums and deep basslines. This time he offers up the single 'Progressive Roots' which is prime Afro-futurism with Balearic guitar lines ringing out next to the nimble keys and shimmering pads. Ahmee's Club Culture Foundation remix goes more deep and cavernous with a subtler sound, and the Deep mix then gets tribal. 'Progressive Roots Congo' closes out with shuffling broken beats and layers of rich percussion.

Night Susan (4:11)
Boom-A-Rang (4:58)
Review: Club Warme Deken & San Proper tease a new EP with this tidy new 7". As you would expect from the always left-of-centre San Proper this is a fresh pair of cuts with a notable pop influence. 'Night Susan' is a slow and raw beat with filtered vocals and whirring machine sounds, a low slung hip-hop edge and funky bass guitar riffs adding the hooky charm. 'Boom-A-Rang' on the flip is a great collage of sound made from ad-libbed vocals, percussive hits, deep drums and tanging hits. Two charming curveballs for sure.

Review: Four Rooms reflects a very fun time in Hollywood, or at least the annals of American cinema. Co-directed by Allison Anders, Alexandre Rockwell, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, the story of the fictional Los Angeles-set Hotel Mon Signor, and the strange, demanding, off-putting, and straight up intimidating guests that stay there on New Year's Eve - just as Tim Roth starts his first shift on the job as bellhop - is full of energy and a carefree, playful attitude. It's the kind of movie which, if it were made today, would no doubt be rushed straight to the bottom of the New Releases section on whatever streaming service you've given in to because it would feel cheap rather than charismatic. But in 1994, catching a quintet of fresh filmmakers on the rise, at a time when positivity reigned and the silver screen still had an ounce of class, means the whole thing worked well. As for the soundtrack, we veer between Americana and a reworking of the theme from 1960s US TV series Bewitched, weird, meditative vocal drone and lounge music.

Santos '79 (3:55)
Moon Over Rio (3:23)
Review: Stefano De Santis echoes purple dubstep on this live-feeled new electronic jazz dazzler, all improvised synth fusion that works well both as a danceable cut and a timeout moment. Just two tunes, 'Santos 79' and 'Moon Over Rio' come across like the morning and evening sides of De Santis' lifeworld; the former is a warm, glitzing sonic waxing, full of tweezy approach notes and Simmons drum 'pows'; the latter is a crepuscular waning, contrasting to the other by way of twinkly chime cascades and deeper chromatic blues.

Soul City (2:31)
Pinball 6 (2:46)
Review: Galaxy Sound Co is back with some subtle but sublime new edits, and this time Mr Thelonious turns his hand to 'Soul Town' by The Motherhood from their psychedelic 1969 album I Feel So Free. If you can find this one n 45rpm anywhere it will likely have a high three-figure price tag and this edit is a great alternative with big horn energy and rousing soul-funk grooves. On the flip is 'Pinball 6' which was originally by The Pointer Sisters and made famous for its appearance on Sesame Street in the 1970s when it was used as backing music to the famous segment that taught children how to count. It's an electric bit of jazz-funk that still sounds most excellent.

Review: Wah Wah 45s present Sun Dogs, the debut album from composer, songwriter and producer Jamie Finlay - a unique blend of electric soul, spiritual jazz and psychedelia. A deeply layered and personal album that explores themes of love, loss, grief, and finding strength through turbulent times, this curt selection of eight tracks sports a throng of talent on both production, instrumental and vocal duties, be these contributions from Ellen Beth Abdi, Caitlin LM or Kemani Anderson. All glued together by a crisp broken beat aesthetic and ultra-crisply mixdown standard, we hear an expansively uplifting album unfurl in the continuous inspirational spaces opened in by the dialogic legacies of greats like Lonnie Liston Smith and Pharaoh Sanders.

Review: Naarm in Melbourne, Australia seems to be driving rise to ever more musical talent that makes a mark over here in the UK. It is where producer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Don Glori (aka Gordon Li) ihails from and now with 'Don't Forget To Have Fun' he follows up his acclaimed 2022 LP 'Welcome' in great style. It came amidst personal turmoil and technical setbacks and, after relocating to London in 2023, Don found fresh inspiration by simplifying his process. Working in a tiny room with minimal equipment, he redefined and re-recorded many tracks in his Whitechapel flat. The resulting album blends jazz, funk, soul, r&b and samba, with tracks like 'Pause,' 'Emerald,' and 'All Seeds' showcasing psychedelic influences, tight horn arrangements, and Brazilian street soul.

Sun Circles (Alexander Flood live rework) (4:24)
Sun Circles (John Beltran Project remix) (6:10)
Review: Australian artist Gratts wrote 'Sun Circles' as an empowerment anthem for his two sons and it dropped to plenty of acclaim last year. In its wake, Gratts DJed with Adelaide's multi-talented Alexander Flood on percussion and after some conversations he was enlisted to bring his jazz background to a remix of the original. He did so live as part of a quintet and the result is a super summery, airy rework with soulful vocals that linger long in the air. Michigan-based techno and ambient maestro John Beltran appears on the flip to bring a classy Balearic remix that will have you dreaming of longer, warmer nights and plenty of sun-kissed dancing fun

Review: Well, would you look at that: lo-fi hip-hop has already become LP-worthy. It doesn't seem like long ago at all that the genre seemed eternally bound to its stereotyped form: ten-hour YouTube videos of endlessly looping lo-fi beats paired visually with anime characters perusing the textbooks over mugs of cocoa, cute kittens brushing against their knees, and snow-caked views outside their windows. Light In The Attic colour anyone thinking that such a style couldn't possibly make it onto vinyl LP mistaken, catching us off guard with this second edition from Grey October Sounds' Timeless LoFi project. This one hears the Japanese producer bring beautiful remixes of classic Studio Ghibili theme songs - as well as original compositions - to P-Vine recordings. Choice cuts include the eyes-down bare-bones of 'Y&A' and the muted snaps of 'Home Banter'. So, assuming you've already crammed for the test tomorrow, feel free to relax and swap out your well-worn, coffee-stained textbook for an MPC.

I Will Always Miss You
Revelations 7:16-17
Review: On her third full-length release, Brooklyn-based bassoonist, composer and producer Joy Guidry showcases the full range of her 21st century jazz repertoire. While her frequently haunting and emotionally resonant bassoon parts are naturally a focal point throughout, these distinctive and intoxicating musical movements come wrapped in deep-set ambient soundscapes (see sublime opener 'Psalm:138:7'), waves of special effects (the equally meditative 'It's Okay To Let Me Go'), the righteous release of gospel ('Members Don't Get Weary', 'Angels') and the cosmic, higher-level intent of spiritual jazz ('I Will Always Love You'). In other words, it's an impeccable ambient jazz album that deserves wider recognition.

Review: Reel People Music breaks new ground, in more ways than one, with the launch of fresh compilation series Broken, Deep & Dope. A spin-off from acclaimed compilation brand Soulful, Deep & Dope - introduced back in 2015 - this new series sees the much-loved independent imprint pushing further at the boundaries of soulful music. All with that customary Reel People feeling. Broken, Deep & Dope 2024, the series' first instalment, unleashes 20 superlative examples of the soulful 'bruk' (broken beat), nu beat and nu jazz sound that has so innovatively informed contemporary dancefloors around the world since its inception back in late '90s West London.

Review: Studies In A Dying Love is Edmonton-based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, arranger, producer, and DJ Aladean Kheroufi's debut full-length album. It finds him crafting soulful, idiosyncratic songs with a melancholic yet optimistic vibe that mix pain and pleasure in musical form. Starting at 17, he toured extensively as a session player, performing with acts like The Velveteins and Marlaena Moore, and opening for artists such as Angel Olsen and Orville Peck, all of which helped him hone his skills. Influenced by Curtis Mayfield and Sunny Ozuna, Kheroufi's minimalist soul sound feels timeless throughout this record which comes after a series of sought-after 7" singles.

Review: Takuya Kuroda is a highly respected trumpeter and arranger from Kobe, Japan but now based in New York City. Midnight Crisp was his seventh studio album and now First World has had a selection of cuts from it remixed. 'Choy Soda' gets superb treatment in the form of Waajeed's Hi-Tech Jazz remix which jumbles the trumpet motifs with shuffling drums and future soul. On the flip, 'Dead End Dance' gets a signature Kaidi Tatham remix that brings the broken beats and sunny sounds to the fore with more languid jazz notes adding sultriness.

Review: The new album by Quantic - aka. multi instrumentalist, DJ, composer and producer Will Holland - is in many ways an evolution. Now twenty years into his career, Dancing While Falling is the British-born, New York-based artist's most live sounding, euphoric and, in his own words, grown-up release to date. Capturing the beginnings of every good person's revelatory movement from an individual to a collective spirit, Holland originally began the album in his Brooklyn studio, before realising that he didn't just want to make a record that reflected his 'singular pandemic wormhole', but rather one that tapped into the essential togetherness of the human condition. So too does this record explore themes of connection felt through, and made more intense by, the antagonistic bouts of loneliness that characterised COVID-19. Influenced by legendary artists in the scene like Bohannon and Larry Levan, Quantic wanted to make a disco -eaning album at first; "I'm really interested in Latin music and Afro Caribbean rhythms and I think there's a really amazing point in history where the emergence of those rhythms and its combination with American soul sparked what we now know as disco," he says. This PIAS extended edition comes one year on from its initial 2023 release, Quantic here expands on his work by adding a ream of extended versions.

Review: After his superb debut here, the great Julius Rodriguez is back with a sophomore long-player on Verve Records. The record features a mix of some fantastic and subtly evolved new original material as well as a fantastic cover of Dijon's 'Many Times'. Guest features throughout add further personality with Keyon Harrold, Nate Mercereau, and Georgia Anne Muldrow all contributing. The artist says that this record "embodies the meaning of "Evergreen." With the differing worlds that are presented by each track, I still aim to be fully honest myself in my expression--maintaining my voice in any variation of musical climate."

This new EP on their home label Delusions of Grandeur kicks off with 'Screen Off' (feat Ras Stimulant) which is disco house with bubbly basslines and a retro feel. It also comes as an a cappella and on the flip 'Light The Way' is a seductively smooth cut with Balearic synths and floating pads that will levitate you off the floor. An Iron Curtis Illuminati mix brings starry-eyed electro vibes and his reprise closes out a lush EP.

Review: Smoove AKA Jonathan Scott Watson brings us Bizarre Cut 'N' Paste Ride for the most recent Wack Records release. The producer is known for using his cut up style of east coast flavor. On the A-side, 'Bizarre Cut 'N' Paste Ride' uses Pharcyde tracks and edits them seamlessly like a DJ would. Focusing in on the original instrumentals, he creates a jazzy sound with them. 'Summer Cyde' expands upon this theme while using the all-time classic 'Passin Me By' in the mix. This is like having a dub plate of Pharcyde cuts to your own personal bag. Sounds like these will never get old.

Review: In 1981, Unity, a new South African band, were making waves with their album Erube Jambo. Produced by the team of Van Blerk/Roos & Greg Cutler, it features succulent voices and melodies, psychedelic Moog, Hohner clavinet and Fender Rhodes, all surrounded by Afro-folky guitars. Unity's journey began between 1972 and 1973 when Poy-Poy Makhubela appeared on four singles with The Young Movers, produced by David Thekwane. In 1975, Poy-Poy, as a lead guitarist, formed Unity with Jeff Radine (Fender Rhodes, Moog), George Legobye (bass), Edward Modiselle (percussion), and Robert Moema (drums). Most members came from The Sound Jaws, except Radine, who played with Rugare, Harari, Chicco, The Black Five, and Prince Nico. In 1978, after hearing Unity in a club, Mike Tswai joined as their manager. Poy-Poy's career has flourished, touring globally and collaborating with South African legends like Brenda Fassie, Don Laka, Blondie & Pappa, Dorothy Masuka, and Kwaito bands such as Alaska, Boom Shaka, and Trompies. Iinnovative spirit and enduring talent ahoy.

Review: A warm welcome back to Bruno Hovart's Voilaaa project, traditionally a revivalist Afro-disco vehicle best known for 2015 dancefloor smash 'Spies Are Watching Me'. 'Fache', featuring Pat Kalla, explores similar sonic territory, with punchy Afrobeat horns, woozy chords and crunchy clavinet licks rising above a low-slung, hypnotic, dub disco-meets-Afro-boogie groove. It comes accompanied by a fine, effects-laden instrumental dub and a trio of similarly tasty bonus cuts: the warming, early garage-house and deep house influenced 'Trouble Travel' (featuring Jai-Nah), the languid, soulful and Latin-influenced 'Too Young To Die (featuring Olivia)' and the Afro-speckled disco-goes-jazz-funk loveliness of 'Trop Jeune Pour Sa'.

Review: Zan's new album on BDQ Records is a refreshing blend of boogie, jazz, funk and soul. Known for her strong and sultry voice, Zan rose to fame in the 80s as the lead singer of Melbourne's I'm Talking, alongside Kate Ceberano, and her vocals on hits like 'Holy Word' remain iconic in Australian music history. Zan's musical journey includes collaborations with The Models and appearances in music films like Australian Made. Her diverse background, born in London with Sri Lankan heritage, has influenced her soulful style. Having lived in New York and London, Zan's experiences shine through in her music. Her self-titled solo album in the 90s and tours with bands like Mother Earth improved her career internationally. Back in Melbourne, Zan continues to enchant audiences with her live performances. Her new songs are steeped in 80s dance and pop flavours, re-capturing that feelgood factor from the era whilst bringing to it a new unique and contemporary.
