  1. Paul Randolph, Kathy Kosins & Theo Parrish - "Be Like Me" (SS translation) (9:41)
  2. John Douglas, Amp Fiddler, Ideeyah & Theo Parrish - "Leave The Funk To Us" (full mix) (6:37)
Review: Theo Parrish's "Gentrified Love" series hits its fourth instalment with two stunning extensions/takes. First up is a powerful expansion of "Leave The Funk To Us". First spotted on the second edition of the series, it's now full length with the golden touch of Amp Fiddler. "Be Like Me", meanwhile, takes Paul Randolph & Kathy Kosins' Brownswood Bubbler to a whole new cosmos with lavish twists and cleverly subverted layers. Yet another precision trip from Parrish.

Virginia Swing (7" in hand-stamped sleeve)
Cat: BBRG 003. Rel: 21 Nov 17
  1. Virgina Swing (3:30)
  2. Funky Rubber Band (4:01)
Review: West country glitch fusioneers Phibes hit the black plastic with two killer party pieces. "Virginia Swing" takes us deep south with the duo's bulbous bass textures and a super dope switch into a little Dixieland debauchery. Flip for a Motown heavy hitter as "Funky Rubber Band" pays homage to a classic with some killer builds, fugly bass and an energy that's not dissimilar to a young Plump DJs' remix of War many many moons ago. Don't forget the popcorn.

  2. Rules (3:13)
Review: Two stone cold legends on one unforgettable 45": Courtney and Omar build on their recent Black Notes From The Deep live collaborations with a stunning original and killer cover. "Rules" is a funk-based track that jumps and sizzles with a fresh contemporary energy that you might not expect from either party while "Butterfly" pays a very special homage to another stone cold legend Herbie Hancock. A beautiful release. You might say there's nothing like it.

  3. Bossa B (Deoke remix) (7:04)
  4. Kalimba 2 (Mr Beatnick remix) (3:28)
Review: Born and raised in South London, Hector Plimmer is a designer, producer and DJ, who has been making some considerable waves in recent times. Beginning with an appearance on 2011's Brownswood Bubblers compilation, Hector proved his talent when he was selected as the winner of the PRS Steve Reid InNOVAtion Award. Originally released in early 2017, his Sunshine LP now gets a series of hot remixes. Some blunted urban hip-hop flavour on Reginald Omas Mamode IV's remix of "Sunshine", that dusty MPC deep house sound of Berlin courtesy of their city's finest Glenn Astro, on his remix of "Bossa" while Mr Beatnick turns in an utterly hypnotic remix of "Kalimba 2".

  1. On My Way To Harlem (Jazz & Cole edit)
  2. 1960 What ? (Jazz & Cole edit)
Review: A modern day Scott-Heron, without the myriad of demons on his back, Grammy-nominated jazz singer Porter has such a distinctive voice, charm and band command. He clearly lends himself well to edit culture (as proved by the huge success of the many "1960 What?" versions in recent years) and this 7" from Expansion is no exception. "On My Way To Harlem" is straight up narrative jazz with fantastic attention paid to the subtle samba and solemn horns. "1960 What?" speaks for itself; far more authentic to the original than the other versions that have popped up, if you've not already got a favourite edit - Jazz & Cole have the answer.

Cat: XEXPAND 1010. Rel: 24 May 12
  1. 1960 What? (original)
  2. 1960 What? (Opolopo Kick & Bass rerub)
Review: US newbie Gregory Porter was man of the year as far as nu-soul and funk goes and championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson,Patrick Forge & Nik Weston to name but a few. This record had an incredible amount of attention around it even before its release and to be honest, it ain't no surprise! It's just a future classic, end of discussion - it takes Detroit's fine soul and funk heritage onto a new level, showing us that classics are still very much in the making. Porter's own voice is majestic and prophetic as he talks about "Motor City burnin'" and who then goes on to deliver his powerful and emotional words. There's even a slightly "housier" remix by Opolopo, giving us the chance to also enjoy this mighty record at the centre of late-night set...this is certified Theo Parrish material right here!

Review: First Word's first release of the year and Quiet Storm's first substantial release since his album The First Day, "Human Being: The Short Story Of A Reed" is a beautiful conceptual narrative that explores the idea of a reed yearning to be human but discovering it's not quite as easy as it looks. The music is, however, as beautiful as you'd expect from the Parisian composer. Ranging from the soft pensive vocal texture allure of opener "Human" to the eventual dizzying bewilderment of the finale "Being" by way of stimulating chapters such as the lucid bossa "The Reed" and the eerie, night fog horse ride "Risk It", this is a stunning, stirring piece of work that reveals more and more on every listen.

Review: Destination Milan, 1983: a group of like minded fusionists meet, jam and lay down their singular take on the blossoming Italo disco sound. A wild brew of funk, boogie, disco, Italo, rock and jazz, these sessions made it to tape but very little of it made it much further. Until now. Restored and remastered, these six tracks capture the familiarity the musicians had with each other and the loose energy shared between them. Highlights include the effortless interplay between guitar and sax on "Permesso?", the playful party swing of "Lino's Theme" and the slinky trippy intro "Strano". Bellissimo.

Review: Simona Faraone's New Interplanetary Melodies raises the heat with Marcell Napoletano's Ra Toth & The Brigante's Orchestra project's first full EP "Acid Sea". A vivid hybrid experiment, the troupe flip between moments of frenzied confusion and otherworldly dizziness on tracks such as the gritty, distorted, aquatic acid title track and the horn-melting time-bender "System Desease" to much more conventional groove experimentation such as the slinky, woozy jam "Nico's Bass". Climaxing with the theremin-warping one-way trip into space that is "Marciolamenti", it's a remarkable trip that's layered in detail and convention-challenging phrases. Dig deep.

  3. Swinging To The Bass (Bruce Ivery remix)
Review: The music of London based collective Los Charly's Orchestra dips a 70s boogie sound with a Latin touch, and lends itself well to the exemplary mixing talents of Chi-town don Rahaan, who remixes "Swinging To The Bass" for Dopeness Galore Holland. Rahaan captures the funk that lies at the core of this track, using it as the base on which to manipulate and twist the music. It's a light footed disco cut, with a hook that slices clean through the spattering of jazz-licked murmurings. The dub mix overwhelms you with a driving bass line and tinkling piano solo, with Rahaan borrowing each epic element and composing a fresh and lively sound. Do check.

Review: Chicago's Tony Rainwater delivers a great full length after impressive appearances on Hamburg's Lehult last year. The Rockberry Jam EP is actually his solo debut for the label and is a 'thick, crunchy concoction of sweet and sample-heavy grooves'. Each track was recorded live, according to the American artist, who claims that his production methods involved realtime sampling of his music collection via iTunes, alongside additional loops ripped from vinyl; also employing a spontaneous methodology. "The record is really like my record collection randomly coming together above a kick drum."

Review: Destination Detroit as Randolph brings together a series of collaborations, remixes and productions with European producers. Dorfmeister kicks off with a deeply dubby house twist on "Heavy" while Austria's Rodney Hunter amps up the jazz on "No Gonna Let You". Wahoo's "Don't Take It Personal" glides us back to 2007 in street soul shoes while Kirk brings us back to the future in the dreamiest of states. Other sublime highlights include Opolopo's Sneak-style house chugs on "Shake House" and Dial 81's sludgy slo-mo buzzes and shuffles on "Luminous State". A fine collection and great showcase of Randolph's broad range and versatility.

Review: Pure brass bedlam from the long-standing, Grammy-winning, heavy-hitting Rebirth Brass Band: "I Like It Like That" and "Do It Again" are taken from the band's hugely successful Rebirth Of New Orleans album and have never seen the light of 45" before... Until now. The former is hotter than a Mardi in July with a party-rearing hook you'll be humming into the 20s. The latter takes more street corner momentum as the band put down their horns and chant like their lives depends on it. It doesn't get more powerful than this. Super limited too - only 500 copies to be pressed.

Review: DJ Junior's multi-skilled, many-souled in-house label troupe gets the reversion treatment with two fantastic dancefloor twists: Osgage adds a nicely loose and free-spirited house twist of "Batucada" that's reminiscent of Recloose's records. On the flip Sol Power All Stars take "Pela" and give it a beautiful sun-splashed Balearic polish. 1. Bob Marley - "Is This Love" (Redmo acoustic takedown)
  2. Redmo - "Sadi Soul"
Review: Sam Redmore has quietly been doing his thing in hometown Birmingham for some time, crafting soul-soaked re-edits, bootleg remixes and mash-ups that tend towards the tasteful end of the spectrum. Having previously built up a solid fan base via his own Bandcamp page, he's finally made it onto wax. The two cuts featured here are amongst his best. The A-side revision of Bob Marley's "Is This Love" is particularly potent. It strips out the drums, thus emphasizing the genuine sweetness of Marley's original. Flip for "Sadi Soul", an upbeat, headnodding rework of a vibraphone and double bass-laced jazz-funk jam with added hip-hop swing.

Review: Rocketnumbernine, the project of brothers Tom and Ben Page, has been closely tied to a very specific type of London sound ever since their debut as a duo on Kieren Hebden's Text Records. Since then, they've also released on London's Soul Jazz Records, and have offered a wonky, experimental yet richly musical sort of house music. They now land on the excellent Border Community with two new tracks, the first one being too far from both electronica and house to properly categorise it in either one. The point is that the pair's music is deep and explorative, blurring the lines between electronic genres one bit at a time. Certainly recommended and a real marker for their mooted new LP for Border Community

Not even taking a whole slew of singles on the likes of Basic Fingers, DOC, Kampana and House Of Disco into account, he's more than made up for lost time. "Flecha De Fogo" is a heavy sunset soul piece that works around a Nazare Pereira samba with woozy chords, layered percussion and an alluring vocal. Review: A dinky seven inch brimming with funkalicious delights from the Agogo Records camp here, as Catania's captain of the edits Fab Samperi drops two essential dancefloor tweaks for the Hannover label. The A Side sees Samperi turn to his attentions to "Hard Work" a little 2011 B Side gem from Smoove & Turrell, finessing the original's Northern Soul stomp into a smoother slice of soul infused breaks. Grip the flip where Samperi flips the script, turning smouldering downtempo of The Soul Session's "Soul Desire" into a swing blessed uptempo refix augmented by some deft B-Boy touches.

Review: The latest golden nugget from Hayes-based soul specialists Expansion sees Phil Asher, The Mighty Zaf and 2000 Black take it in turns to rework one of the highlights of modern jazz-man Robb Scott's recent album, Siren. Asher and Zaf kick things off with a deliciously glassy-eyed jazz-funk-meets-soulful house revision that not only boasts a seriously loved-up, beat-free intro, but also tons of subtle instrumental solos. A radio edit of that rework is also available on the flip. That's where you'll find 2000 Black's brilliantly jazzy broken beat revision, which is every bit as sumptuous and musically rich as the West London duo's own productions.

"Envole" is a sumptuous blend of snaking rhythm, spacious pads and cosy keys, all draped in exotic garms that make this a transcendental house cut to treasure. There are also more adventurous trips into percussive territory on the focused and deadly "Le Reveil," crafty jazz diversions to be soaked up on "Max" and poised ambient pieces "Eclipse" and "Procession" to seal the deal.

Review: Los Angeles based Cold Busted presents Shinji from the sandy beaches of New South Wales, Australia. He's a hip-hop instrumentalist that takes any sample as a challenge, flipping the obscure tracks of the world into soulful beats. With a love of 60's lounge and jazz and way too much time, the Canberra native writes like a madman - giving way to dusty beats on this funky seven inch single. Taken from his forthcoming album In Colour (coming in April 2018), this single features two retro-tastic tracks that will send the beatheads swinging across the floor. The blunted A side cut "Second Wind" is reminiscent of DJ Premier's Jazzamatazz series, while the liquid jazz funk of B side cut "Green Mash" is pure bliss.

Review: The unmissable, inimitable, and supremely funky Shoes crew are back with number 17 in their catalogue, and it's another mash-up of styles and vibes on this tight four-tracker. "Bonne" is a slinky, Afro-led gem driven by some powerful hymns, whereas "Computer (dub)" is straighter, deeper, and closer to house than anything tropical. The B-side contains the excellent "Sun, Sun, Sun", an ode to the Gods above that recalls Caribou at his best, and "Heart Made Of Stone (On The Left)" is a return to the wild, cavernous jungles of Africa. On point from start to finish.

Review: Yes! It's time for another Shokazulu transmission from Mr Kaidi Tatham which naturally arrives via the good ship 2000 Black. If you checked last year's debut Shokazulu long player for the label, you know this Tatham project perfectly embodies the musical spirit of 2000 Black, linking themes of the past with contemporary production methods on cuts that are forever forward thinking. Don't think that's changed on this latest 2000 Black drop from Shokazulu! Lead cut "Fresh Fromage" sees Tatham calling on close friends Mr Mensah and Mark Force and the vibe feels that much stronger for it. Commencing in true '70s jazz fusion style, the cut goes up a level when Force's drums come in and the full weight of the arrangement is revealed. The tempo drops on the flip as Tatham goes on a solo trip into blunted and bruk hip hop with "Something".

Cat: CDA 024. Rel: 11 Jun 18
  1. Animal Planet (main mix)
  2. Boogie Space
  3. Walking
  4. Dubby Body
  5. Recordtake (Sketch)
Review: Previously caught unwinding psychotropic deep techno on Ethereal Sound, Modernista and more, Yuri Shulgin now comes to Cocktail D'Amore with the kind of discoid acid sound the label loves so dearly. "Animal Planet" is a fine case in point, laying the psychedelic touches on thick and taking a bold approach to composition without losing his grip on the punchy acid bassline. "Boogie Space" is a boxy workout, while "Walking" brings some limber instrumentation into the mix in line with the title track. "Dubby Body" is another off-kilter tool for adventurous DJs, and then "Recordtake (Sktech)" finishes the EP on a weird and wonderful free jazz boogie tip.

  2. Salvadanio
  3. On The Road
  4. Simple (version)
  5. Soundtrack
Review: As Skalpel, Marcin Cichy and Igor Pudlo were long considered the most under rated act on the Ninja Tune roster with two sublime albums in the middle of the last decade and a slew of great 12"s. After a lengthy hiatus the Polish duo have re-emerged with a single that precedes Transit, a third album that's pencilled in for release later this year. Entitled Simple, this five track 12" is of course anything but simple with Cichy and Pudlo's effortless mastery of jazz and electronica fully on display. Skalpel fans will be spoilt for choice, with the tracks "On The Road" and "Simple (Version)" that close the A Side and open the B Side the two that have got most rotation in the Juno office.

  1. Dangerous (2012 Univers jazz mix)
  2. Do You Remember? (Taggy Matchers jazzy mix)
Review: He's jazzed all over Bob. He's filled Grandmaster Flash with jazz too. Shucks, he's done Jacko several times over. But Ed's back and he's jazzing all over the place. This time they focus on the later stages of Jackson's career: "Dangerous" rolls with sneaking minor key twinkles and smoky spoken word before the melody softens to allow a little Michael in the mix. "Do You Remember" is more a jazz boogie joint with funky piano rolls on the fills and much more engaging groove.

Jupiter Masterdrive Edits (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: WOTEP 018X. Rel: 14 Oct 15
  1. Flight Formation (Danny Krivit edit) (7:08)
  2. Flight Formation (Glenn Astro edit) (5:21)
  3. Step Overs (Danvers remix) (5:53)
Review: Brighton jazz/soul two piece Soccer96 get a makeover for their Jupiter Masterdrive release from 2014. NYC's legendary Danny Krivit gives "Flight Formation" a re-edit that only a true master of the artform truly can. He definitely emphasises the best parts of the track, not to mention all the uplifting soulfulness of it.. like he does! Berlin's purveyor of dusty hip-hop influenced deep house Glenn Astro also steps up to resplice the source material of said track too, giving it his Midas touch. Finally Danvers does a remix of "Step Overs" and does a fine job, remaking the track into a deep funky house jam that honours the late nineties sound, vaguely reminiscent of the French Touch style.
