No Ordinary Love (4:22)
Let Go (4:13)
Review: Japanese stars Akiko and Yukihiro Fukutomi came together to cover SADE's anthem several years ago but it now makes its way back to fresh wax courtesy of Record Store Day 2024. They infused it with dark, mysterious jazz and contemporary influences and Akiko's enigmatic vocals intertwine flawlessly with the minimalist arrangement. On the B-side, their original 'let GO' offers a spiritual journey through dub-techno realms where the synergy between Akiko's emotive delivery and Fukutomi's masterful production creates a captivating sound. This release epitomises the pair's creative chemistry and innovative approach to blending diverse musical elements into a seamless, immersive new realm.

Andrew Ashong & Theo Parrish - "Flowers" (8:55)
Andrew Ashong - "Take It Slow" (7:11)
Andrew Ashong - "The Way She Moves" (short version) (5:21)
Review: At first glance, the pairing of Forest Hill resident Andrew Ashong and Sound Signature boss Theo Parrish would seem strange. But the duo have worked together previously with the Ghanaian born vocalist (and supposed owner of a vinyl collection that would make most record shops look like a car boot sale) lending his soulful tones to Parrish's excellent nine minute plus translation of the Hot Chip and Spiritualised affiliated About Group. Whereas that collaboration was more about Ashong's voice being just one element of a production that was undoubtedly Parrish, the three tracks present on the Flowers EP look to showcase what a talent the Londoner is. Those trademark dust filled stacatto rhythms are present in the opening title track, but they never swamp Ashong's killer vocal delivery, while "Take It Slow" is bonafide D funk of the highest order. After the brutal, divisive nature of Theo's kung fu experimentalism on the Any Other Styles EP, these three tracks show him in a wholly new light and hopefully Parrish and Ashong will be making much more music together.

Review: A shrewd business move from Coco Bryce? The underground drum & bass lodestar has named his latest full-length record after the Japanese pop genre, between which there appears to be no relation. We're left to wonder whether it's purely a coincidence, save for the fact that the latter's popularity makes it seem like less of one. Whatever the case, the mood of Coco's latest record errs less on bangers and more mash, completely sidestepping the apparent need for most producers working mainly in realm of singles and EPs to suddenly play up to a concept when it comes to making an LP. No; from 'Slow Motion' to 'Blow Me Over', City Pop is muted, revelling in the joy of pure breaks science and soft chordal experimentation. The extra tasteful sample-work of 'Idle Minds' and blooping minimalisms of 'Your Mine' go on to testify that this is a subtle listen, perhaps one that only an artist at the height of their career can indulge, after all the points have been proven and statements made.

Review: Following a brief hiatus to recharge his batteries following the release of the genuinely fantastic Evergreen album on Freerange last year, Ben J Worral brings his Crackazat project back to Heist Recordings. With six tracks on show, there's plenty to set the senses tingling, from the jazzy, dreamy and soulful downtempo beats of impeccable opener 'I Need To Know' and the joyous, piano-sporting sunshine house excellence of 'Do You Think About Me', to the rising, subtly jazz-flecked deep house perfection of 'Freddie's Groove' (a kind of Crackazat update of Pepe Bradock's 'Deep Burnt', with added horns) and the broken jazz-house-soul of Potash Twins collaboration 'Phantom'. Jazz-funk flavoured broken beat gem 'Endless Life' and the Guru's Jazzamatazz-esque 'When We Last Met' complete a fantastic EP.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Over his long and illustrious career, Dennis 'Dego' McFarlane has made music in many complimentary styles, but it's been broken beat with which he's been associated with for the least two decades. Alongside his friend and regular studio partner Kaidi Tatham, he's developed a particular strain of "bruk" that incorporates elements of jazz, electrofunk, soul, boogie, jazz-funk and, more occasionally, hip-hop. It's this fluid, attractive, synth-heavy sound that's at the heart of The Negative Positive, his first solo full-length for two years. It's as well-made, soulful, slick and musically rich as you'd expect, with a series of stellar vocal numbers joining a swathe of similarly impressive instrumentals.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve split at the bottom and slight surface marks on record***

Dego's latest album is a focused, strip down affair that benefits greatly from extensive lead vocals courtesy of his latest collaborator, rising star Samii. As you'd expect, a few other 2000 Black regulars (Matt Lord, Mr Mensah and Kaidi Tatham) also lend a hand here and there, adding extra layers of warming, jazz-funk influenced musicality to a set rooted in broken beat, modern soul and the jazzier end of the dancefloor spectrum. Highlights come thick and fast, with our picks of an inspired bunch including acid-flecked, deep broken soul number 'En Route', the classic Kaidi and Dego style jazz-funk business 'Proxima Centauri', the sun-soaked brilliance of 'Warp 7' and the neo-boogie excellence of 'Don't Stall'.

Datu was Alfaro's fifth album, self-released back in 2019 on his Astral Travels label, and reissued here courtesy of Lille's Besides Records. Across the assortment of tracks featured on this great album, he mixes hip-hop and electronic music with tribal percussion and other sounds that come from his Philippine origins.

Review: Melbourne-based trio Glass Beams share their debut record Mahal, the highly anticipated album to follow 2021's incipient 'Mirage' EP. Fronted by founding member Rajan Silva, the Glass Beams project revolves around the central theme of fatherly childhood memories, bestowed unto Silva by way of a cultural inheritance reflective of both Melbourne and India. After Silva attended the legendary Royal Albert Hall concert by George Harrison in collaboration with Ravi Shankar, he was away; nothing was the same, as a cascade of South Asian psychedelia and desert funk spewed forth; added to which, Mahal is the most recent piece of invaluable flotsam.

Review: The glorious new album Amen represents something of a big evolution in Joy Guidry's capacity to fully capture and express a sound and concept. The spine-tingling, spiritual and beautiful record transitions from stirring, powerful jazz and gospel compositions to ambient tracks that keep you afloat amongst the stars. Each one serves as a truly profound statement of communal healing and peace. There are also some fantastic contributions from Niecy Blues, Kalia Vandever, Tyrone Allen, and Jessie Cox, all of whom help Amen to showcase Guidry's artistic growth and ability to blend genres to create a cohesive and impactful musical experience.

Review: Japanese nu-jazz doesn't get any more smouldering than this deep cut from Yusuke Hirado featuring Lil Summer on vocal duties. 'Fly Away' is a mellow melter thanks in no small part to the moody strings lingering behind Hirado's fluid funk production. It's a downtempo vibe which calls to mind the UK street soul sound, contrasted by B-side joint 'Dear Limmertz' which has a more jazz funk oriented flavour. Both joints won't let you down when you want to set the mood as smooth as possible - with a seasoned pro like Hirado at the controls, what else would you expect?

Review: Bristol's soul jazz kings The Jazz Defenders land on the Haggis label here with a new jazz rap-cum-hip-hop single featuring Doc Brown. It is a melange of all things great about jazz, funk and instrumental hip hop with some of a big swing feel. The arrangement is fulsome on 'Rolling On A High' with woodblock hits, big horns, warm chords and free flowing bars. Things get more deep and reflective on the B-side tune 'Looking Back' which is slower, more vulnerable, more seductive.

Review: Surfing on the wave of 1980's Nippon's bubble - of electronics and economics, fashion and the femme fatale, pop culture and computerized technopop, and the world's sudden fascination with everything Japan - a group of young studio musicians from Tokyo's downtown of Akihabara and Kanda came together for ad hoc recording sessions between 1982-1986. Mariko Katsuragi's goal was to produce the next domestic hit album, uniquely inspired by the manifold urban sprawls of Asia, whether local or across national borders. Unfortunately, the original incarnation of Ayoama Nights never saw the light of day due to an early-career split resulting from one of the band members' relationship breakdown. Now restored over 40 years on, this modern edition of the sessions hears a slick, synth-driven and funky take on the classic Japanese city pop sound, one that homes in more on the instrumental and neon-lit sides of things.

Review: Australian sound artist and composer Sean La'Brooy now calls New York home, although his work is restless and impossible to connect with a static location (if it's ever possible to call cities such as the Big Apple static). Merchant is a case in point. While we could be inclined to apply labels like ambient or downtempo to the work, ultimately it's both and then neither of those things. Take 'Cargo', for example. The kind of tune that confirms just how important overall context is to electronic music, this could be the most relaxed moment of a dance floor mix, or the most uptempo part of a lush sweeping soundscape journey. Elsewhere, 'Helipad' takes us into dubbier ends, while 'Pilot' brings Balearic elements to the fore in a beautifully warm and inviting sonic trip.

You can hear the joy bursting out of 'Musica' in every sassy synth line and throbbing bass pulse, coming on like the best Cerrone-approved synth-disco record you never heard. There's plenty of space for low slung, Balearic whispers like 'Return To Centaurus' too, just hinting at the range Mildlife are capable of on their finest album to date.

It is a mix of funky synthesized jazz with gorgeous melodies and life-affirming musical moods that mange to sound as full of hope and optimism as the dawn of a new spring day. Behind it all is the highly acclaimed Estonian composer and musician Tonu Naissoo who has a worldwide reputation for his composition and performance skills and he shows them all off here. Various classic synths and a Rhodes MK2 form the foundation of these sounds with an in house studio group providing drums, bass, reeds and flutes.

Review: Nautilus are one of Juno's most in-demand and regular jazz groups, distributing their various singles, EPs and albums through us with such relentless force that it's often hard to keep track. However, their latest project here, A Story About You, sticks out from the rest, delivering a total of ten tracks centring on their usual jazz-funk vision, but shifting the focus away from them and onto you, the listener. The title track is an instantly infectious, talkboxing nighttime-jazz cut complete with dotted-crotchetting drum lilts and a raised bed of synth pads and pianos; from there on out, the LP betrays a lightweight twilight narrative, with every jazzdance favourite from 'The World Is A Ghetto' to 'Cathedral' delivering an instrumental tabula rasa onto which you, yourself, might project a personal hero's journey.

Review: If you've ever wondered what you might hear if Nightmares on Wax man DJ E.A.S.E. invited you back to his Ibiza villa for a post-club crack on, this edition of the long-running "Back To Mine" series has all the answers. It's a fine mix, all told, with the Warp Records stalwart running through a range of soulful head-nodders (Children of Zeus, Ladi6, Creative Principle), and sun-kissed good-time grooves (Bosq, Massimo Vanoni), before gently upping the tempo via Dim Zach's Imagination-sampling nu-disco, the simmering jazz-funk of Chieftain, and the NYC proto-house style goodness of Soulphiction's SBM project. Naturally, you'll find a clutch of the Leeds-raised artist's own productions and reworks dotted throughout, including a wonderfully loved-up, string-laden house version of "Russia" by Fat Freddy's Drop.

Review: Theo Parrish's masterful Sound Sculptures Vol 1 on triple LP format gets a timely repressing!! In total here there are 9 of the 27 tracks from the full double CD version but these still run the gamut of Theo's inimitable talents, from rough and tumble disco edits to saccharine soul, raw beatdown and leftfield esoterica. Be sure to check the Omar S- featuring "Synthetic Flemm" and long time Juno favourite "Flotation Device". If ever there was a selection of tracks that fully showcased the incredible breadth of production talent this man has, this is it. Not to be missed!

Review: Lau Ro's debut album Cabana is a poignant and introspective look on memory, self-discovery, and imagination, rooted in their upbringing in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and their later experiences in Europe. Recorded in a small wood cabin at the bottom of their garden, the album traverses dreamy bossa, ambient folk, fuzzy tropicalia, and majestic MPB, enveloped in masterful string arrangements and trippy electronics. Lau Ro's delicate yet confident vocals, sung in both English and Portuguese, navigate themes of urban pollution and utopian dreams rich with nature and wildlife - a journey of rediscovery, as Lau Ro reconnect with their roots while embracing their European experiences. The result is music that feels like it belongs to a parallel universe Brazil, offering a glimpse into Lau Ro's multifaceted identity and artistic vision.

The Rotating Assembly - "Seasons Of My Life" (feat Billy Lo)
Green Pickles - "Feedback" (feat Billy Lo & M Pittman)
Review: Sound Signature kick off the new year with a pleasing reissue of some smoky soul from Theo Parrish's outlet for his most jazzy tendencies. On "Seasons Of My Life" Billy Lo croons over a muted trumpet while a surprisingly rough stomp gets hammered out of a live kit. It's a dreamy, sunkissed jam with all the loose, free-flowing elements you would expect from something with Parrish's stamp on it. Marcellus Pittman helps out on "Feedback", as a sparser, meandering groove does the nasty with some restrained keys. For that Detroit beatdown flavour away from the dancefloor, this is as good as it gets.

Review: Felipe Gordon's Wide Awake label presents Argentina's best preserved secret, Vinocio, for its second release; a first-time vinyl issue of their soulful jazz album Me Estas Haciendo Mal. First released in 2021. This slick little curio is almost unwaveringly described as an Argentinian take on the unjackable neo-soul and hip-hop style first laid down by D'Angelo and his Soulquarians crew. While an American duo exploring this elegant sound could more easily be considered biters, Vinocio's saving grace is their hailing from Buenos Aires, not to mention their fidelity to the Spanish language and their own skilful lendings to the sound. Not their only album of the sort, Me Estas Haciendo Mal is nonetheless their crown jewel, with likes of Moah, Ricky Gandolfo, Ivan Chapuis and Mia Saez joining core members Lucien Memi and Fermin Caprena for an ultra-sexy array of dynamic slow jams.

Review: Scissor & Thread are one of the foremost labels providing a modern, electronic take on dub and related genres. ZG, meanwhile, is the moniker of London based Zansika Lachhani and Grant (aka Anthony Collins, and the Tony in Frank & Tony). Meeting online and mutually respecting each others' approach to music production, ZG soon set out to make an intriguing take on jungle n' drum n' bass. With vocal contribs from Zan, the LP reflects inspirations from 4hero to Source Direct, while also bringing an electric experimentalism to the sound.
