  1. Dangerous (2012 Univers jazz mix)
  2. Do You Remember? (Taggy Matchers jazzy mix)
Review: He's jazzed all over Bob. He's filled Grandmaster Flash with jazz too. Shucks, he's done Jacko several times over. But Ed's back and he's jazzing all over the place. This time they focus on the later stages of Jackson's career: "Dangerous" rolls with sneaking minor key twinkles and smoky spoken word before the melody softens to allow a little Michael in the mix. "Do You Remember" is more a jazz boogie joint with funky piano rolls on the fills and much more engaging groove.

Jupiter Masterdrive Edits (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: WOTEP 018X. Rel: 14 Oct 15
  1. Flight Formation (Danny Krivit edit) (7:08)
  2. Flight Formation (Glenn Astro edit) (5:21)
  3. Step Overs (Danvers remix) (5:53)
Review: Brighton jazz/soul two piece Soccer96 get a makeover for their Jupiter Masterdrive release from 2014. NYC's legendary Danny Krivit gives "Flight Formation" a re-edit that only a true master of the artform truly can. He definitely emphasises the best parts of the track, not to mention all the uplifting soulfulness of it.. like he does! Berlin's purveyor of dusty hip-hop influenced deep house Glenn Astro also steps up to resplice the source material of said track too, giving it his Midas touch. Finally Danvers does a remix of "Step Overs" and does a fine job, remaking the track into a deep funky house jam that honours the late nineties sound, vaguely reminiscent of the French Touch style.

  1. Comrade (4:34)
  2. Explorer (4:05)
Review: Six-piece outfit Soil and Pimp Sessions are one of Japan's better-known contemporary jazz crews, thanks in no small part to regular European releases on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings imprint. This tasty two-tracker is one of three simultaneously released seven-inch singles that mark the band's first new material of 2018. A-side "Comrade" is a sun-bright, jazz-funk fuelled soul-jazz number, with a local guest vocalist providing the top-end polish atop the band's attractive mixture of head-nodding, hip-hop style beats, summery trumpet solos, spacey synthesizer motifs and twinkling piano lines. The band's Herbie Hancock style jazz-funk influences are further explored on brilliant B-side "Explorer", an up-tempo, floor-friendly affair where band members trade solos over bustling drums and spacey synthesizer chords.

  3. CE (0:59)
  4. Some Velvet Morning (6:55)
Review: Sonny is a mysterious new Danish musician landing on a brand new Danish label Koldt Bord with a lavish, cosmically-tinged four piece EP that refuses to let you go. The wild narrative and dynamic momentum of "Agoraphobia", the soft lilted and mistiness of "Alone In Ginza", the strange tropic short, sweet skit of "CE" and the journey-like ride into the unknown of "Some Velvet Morning" comprise to create something of its own world. Sitting somewhere between Cinematic Orchestra and fellow Dane Kenneth Bager, this leave you wanting more...

  3. Boo Boo Step (4:23)
  4. Nano Nights (4:54)
Review: First he asked us to follow him, then he asked us if we wanted to find to find him. Now he's asking us to move closer... Steve Spacek's Eglo series has been a remarkable trip so far as he continues to illustrate unseen pictures with far-out, unbounded sounds and arrangement. "Mov Clsr" is the steamy dreamy soul number while "Garage Days" unravels the usually tightly wound two-step into a much spacier, dreamy affair, "Boo Boo Step" is a trip into the heart of an old BBC Micro computer while "Nano Nights" closes on a flighty 160BPM step session where lights twinkle and cascade with fluorescent fun. No one makes music like Spacek. Beautiful.

  1. Wish I Didn't Miss You (3:54)
  2. Wish I Didn't Miss You (remix) (4:19)
Review: Oooh! Angie Stone's "Wish I Didn't Miss You" definitely belongs in the canon of all time modern soul classics. Taken from her 2001 second album Mahogany Soul, the Swizz Beats produced track made optimum usage of an O' Jays sample and was instrumental in that LP going gold and propelling the former D'Angelo collaborator to stardom. It also inspired countless official and under the counter remixes with Blaze's perhaps the most recognisable. So yes this reissue on 7" from Outta Sight is worthy if you don't have the original in your collection and features a housed up remix from Hex Hector on the flip.

  1. Billy's Castle (4:32)
  2. The Pusher (3:58)
Review: M.A BEAT!'s Adrien Legay returns to Black Milk Music with his brand new project The Storm Watchers. Joined by Alexandre Weppe on Rhodes, Julen Moneret on double bass and Nicolas Gegout on tenor sax, their first forecast is a strong one; "Billy's Castle" is a bewitching, smoky brew of tension and soft release as the sax takes the lead of Legay's twinkling percussion. "The Pusher" has much more of an unpredictable narrative as we're hurled from horn hurricane to glistened keys and back again with a brilliant sense of pace. The storm's a-brewing and we suspect it's only going to get heavier...

Review: Next up on Bradley Zero's Peckham based imprint, following up great ones by Neue Grafik, 30/70 and Mallard is String Theory from Glasgow. They serve up some acid jazz and broken beat style numbers, which will appeal to fans of early Mark De Clive Lowe or Atjazz. From the chill vibe of "Dirty High" which is so emotive, through to the uptempo "Con Moto" which throws in a bit of Detroit style melody, dusty deep house beats and creamy Rhodes keys for added measure. Closing out the impressive EP is the super sultry "Lucidity".

  2. Oyelo (Kay Suzuki By The Sea mix) (6:39)
  3. Oyelo (Kay Suzuki Drum dub) (6:21)
Review: Hot on the Cuban heels of "Nacao" comes another scorching hot Latin fusion from London-based virtuoso Claudio Passavanti. Loaded with an all-star cast comprising master percussionist Giovanni Imparato, Ronnie Scotts resident Rene Alvarez, the dancefloor-minded beat is peppered with Cuban percussion and vocal rhythms and lavish jazzy swings to the keys. Remix-wise Kay Suzuki provides two-for-one; an outstanding Balearic toe-tickler massaged with just the right amount of cosmicity and the naked drum track which is an odyssey in itself. Oye oye.

  1. Nightrunning (4:01)
  2. Omo (4:23)
Review: As a member of Stepak-Takraw, Yoichi Takeuch has spent much of his career crafting material heavily influenced by 1970s Afrobeat. On this debut solo single he takes a different approach, crafting warm, sun-kissed and blissful grooves with the benefit of what sounds like an MPC workstation. Check first A-side "Nightrunning", a dreamy and decidedly Balearic affair where chopped-up vocal snippets and guitar motifs rise above a hip-hop-goes-polyrhythmic groove. There's a slightly jazzier feel to flipside "Omo", whose slack, post Tony Allen drum break is layered with chanted childrens' vocals, sun-bright guitar flourishes and toasty, head-in-the-clouds chords. It's hard to describe, but really rather good.

  3. Super Lion (6:37)
  4. We All Breathe The Same Air (5:22)
Review: The word virtuoso is thrown around like a rag in a laundry these days but Kaidi is definitely deserving of this title. A mind-blowingly talented multi-instrumentalist who was one of the clearest voices and driving forces in broken beat, Kaidi's skills remain just as slick, smooth and crafted with the fine art of surprise as ever as he follows up his "Changing Times" EP on First Word. "Hard Times" eases us in gently with a smooth jazz funk swoon laced with big orchestral sweeps, "I See What You See" ups the tempo with a superb steppy boogie twist that's loaded with some outrageous p-funk bass fills while "Super Lion" flexes around an afrobeat with full eyes (and feet) on the floor. Finally "We All Breathe The Same Air" closes with big dreamy drama that leaves you hanging for more... Just like all good virtuosos should.

Review: It would seem we're back on the Christmas card list... 2000 Black supergroup comprising the likes of Dego, Mensah and original Bugz members Lord and Tatham have been slowly ramping up their releases again and this year has seen their largest output yet. Following "Two Way Here One Way Go", "Simmering" proffers three more sublime and silky instrumentals from deeply decorated foursome. "Simmering" is a tight jazz funk jam with a sprung guitar groove spine and a blissful switch into soothing flutes midway, "Private Life" flips for a sunnyside digidub, all spacious and rippling with its breezy keys while "Climb The Sun" brings us back to the funk root note but with rising synth insistency that's bruk to the bone. Simmering now, boiling tomorrow...

  2. Les La-Bas (3:05)
Review: Ninja Tune know how to come up with the goods for RSD, and they've truly hit the nail on head with this epic two-tracker from legendary French jazz bassist Henri Sexier, reimagined by the mind of Bonobo. The original cut of "Les La-Bas", which resides on the B-side, is a wonderfully loose blend of raw guitar strings and violin cello strings held together by a delicious beat jingle; the Bonobo remix manages to carry that musical power onto an effective house swing that ends up somewhere in the region of a Larry Levan classic. Don't miss it!

Review: The third album from Brainfeeder soul man Thundercat gets the coloured vinyl treatment. His haziest, softest and most consistent set so far, his falsetto dulcets wrap around a whirlwind of styles that are tailor made for vinyl. Sloping and sliding into each other all the way, from the slippery wah-wah guitar disco of "Them Changes" to the Plantlife-style funk of "Lone Wolf & Club" to the trippy ambience of "That Moment", we're gradually moved slowly, softly and sweetly throughout.

Review: More strange outer planetary delights from the 1979 Foundation. Here we celebrate the spirit of a centenarian Parisian vanguard Toklas by way of a 13 minute sonic exploration. One part raw, transcendental ambient with floatation tank synths and dense pads, another part lava-like tribal music with deep-seeded percussion, if you've been following the Foundation for any amount of time you'll understand how unique, strange and ultimately alluring this is. Review: It's been a while since we last heard from former United Future Organisation member Toshio Matsuura. He's released very little in the last decade, which is rather surprising given his experience and credentials. Here he goes full-on jazz-funk, serving up a superb cover of Rotary Connection favourite "I Am The Black Gold of the Sun". Unlike the better-known Nuyorican Soul cover from the '90s, Matsura's version feels chunkier, heavier and thrillingly raw, with eyes-closed guitar solos clustering around a guttural groove. Of course, the track's life-affirming piano riff is still present, and Dayme Arocena does a terrific job in providing a suitably wild, passionate lead vocal. The two tracks included on this limited 12 inch are exclusive to this Japan only release and did not feature on the Brownswood long player .

Dusted with more of his dreamy jazzy signature he's been developing on labels such as Local Talk and G.A.M.M. Flexing from the squidgy mild acid disco funk of "Atmos" to the lolloping double bass jacks and warped strings and pianos of "TSOS" by way of the woozy aquatic synths and sensual soul whirls of "OrangePeelSkin" and far-out deep dream desert jazz ("The Deepest"), this is Turbojazz's most accomplished and generous EP to date. Kaytranada adds a loose Plant Life style swing, long-time Snoop confidant Battlecat retains more of the synth juiciness while adding his own west coast funk signature while Jean Tonique flips the disco bird with a lavish almost Balearic twist that you could instantly imagine Greg Wilson or Luke Solomon playing. Takes Tomah (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: 000. Rel: 05 Jun 18
  1. Track 1 (6:36)
  2. Track 2 (6:55)
Review: This tasty 12" sees Italian crate diggers Twice and Volcov each have a go at reworking a 1979 jazz-funk workout from one of krautrock's lesser-celebrated outfits. The original - which, in case you fancy looking it up, isn't actually called "Tomah" - is a brilliant fusion of Brazilian influenced rhythms, sparring electric piano solos and relentless bass. Twice's A-side version maintains the essence of the original, expertly rearranging and extending the various solos to create a mind-altering chunk of breathless dancefloor bliss. Volcov takes a slightly different approach on the flip, turning it into a rolling samba-house groover complete with fluttering clarinet solos. Both versions are superb, and sound like summer anthems in the making.

Four instrumentals built out of raw funk materials, his then/now signature of very tight jazz musicianship and programming is in full effect: the juicy JB drive and synth squiggles of "On The Good Foot", the dubby heads-down Fat Freddy's Drop style groove of "Forth & Back", the cadent horn layers of "Afro", the classic drum magic of "Break"... Van Dyke's consistency continues to reign supreme.

Review: "On Se Pousse", a mazy chunk of life-affirming Afrobeat with Sengalese influences, was one of the standout highlights of Vadou Game's 2016 album, Kidayo. Here it gets a deserved single release, with the near perfect original being complimented by two reworks by Osunlade under the Yoruba Soul guise. On the A-side you'll find his main remix, a loose, warm and organic interpretation that wisely retains almost all of the band's brilliant instrumentation while adding a few hazy deep house touches. Thrillingly, the remix rolls along on jaunty polyrhythms before Osunlade switches to rolling deep house beats midway through. An instrumental version of the fine Yoruba Soul remix completes a brilliant package.

Review: Following the debut album Blackism earlier this year, Acid jazz / Wag club fusioneer Lascelle Lascelles continues to build on his latest explorative endeavour; Vibration Black Finger, a band driven by the ideals of post punk and spiritual jazz. Instantly plugging us in with the raffish loose-limbed electroid funk of "Get Up And Do It", Lascelles then blindsides us with a rainbow of elements ranging from the deep emotional soul of Maggie Nicols on "Got To Believe" and one of the most spiritual takes on "Amazing Grace" we've ever heard. Awash with the smoky sax, shimmering Rhodes and delicate horn work, the vibrations run deeper than ever.

Review: The next release on Dream Diary comes from VTR, a hotly-tipped South London duo who merge various strains of electronic music with soul and pop songwriting nous. This debut EP was reportedly co-produced by Afriqua, who have been previously spotted on R&S as well as Dream Diary. "Soul To Skin" opens the EP in a mellow fog of ambient synths and arresting vocals that sound reminiscent of Stevie Nicks. That echo is confirmed on track two, a sultry cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" that will no doubt draw plenty of attention in the band's direction. "Whisper" taps up a little of James Blake's crooked blue-eyed soul, and watch out for long time tech house producer Inxec popping up to remix "Soul To Skin."

Review: Viennese artist Klaus Waldeck was once a prolific producer of what he calls "earthy downtempo beats", but in recent years his releases have been few and far between. In fact, this is his first vinyl missive for two years. He starts in confident fashion via the bluesy, swing-time jazz vibes of "Stay Put" before underpinning an Afro-jazz cut with off-kilter house beats and exotic organ lines on the fine "So It Shall Be". Over on the flipside, Waldeck's assembled musicians switch to up-tempo jazz-soul mode on the clarinet-sporting "Rough Landing", while "Je T'aime Beaucoup" is a gentle and laidback affair full of live hip-hop beats, Nina Simone style vocals, simmering strings and dub delays that stretch out into the sunset and well beyond.

Review: Bruk bastions, the CoOp collective were one of the brightest, most exciting musical movements in the early to mid 2000s with their barbed, broken soul take on bass music emanating from Plastic People playing a heavy role in the forms of contemporary house music, dubstep and all things in between. Freshly reformed since a Boiler Room comeback in 2015 and loaded with new affiliates, the ensemble, First Word proudly present their first collective EP. Ranging from the jittering soundclash bashment of "Spartan Riddim" to the sensual Bias-like harp heaven of "Can't Hold It" via the technoid stutters of "2nd Intention", this marks the start of a very exciting new chapter for the CoOp crew.
