Review: More than just a school concert, 1975's Rocking Grass was a sensation. On one fine estival day, The College Andre-Grasset auditorium overflowed, leaving hundreds spellbound. Registering its impact, Jean-Yves Quesnel and colleagues immortalised the show into a recording, transforming Rocking Grass into Phono Grass.Sessions at College Edouard-Montpetit's studio captured the energy of a shifting musical landscape in Quebec; and pianist Benoit Sarrazin, unknowingly recorded mid-performance, later became a professional musician. The album's original songs, 'Le Roi Muffe' and 'Bright Moments', embodied the era's creative freedom, with the latter later sampled by DJs and featured on Canadian Racer. Originally pressed on a 500-copy run, 1001 est Cremazie become a prized collectible; now it's much more readily available.

Review: Mansfield new wave band B Movie unearth their long-lost 1982 album Hidden Treasures, more than forty years after they first recorded it for Phonogram, an imprint of Universal. The band were on the same management and signed to the same label as Soft Cell, but their career turned out to be a damp squib by comparison and they split up in the mid-eighties, without ever releasing this great album of synth pop for goths. Taking influences from the likes of Ultravox and The Human League, they cloak it in a more brooding atmosphere, reminiscent of The Chameleons and Joy Divsion - hitting all the right notes along the way, we think.

Review: James "Baby Huey" Ramey's sole album remains a striking reflection of his talent and untimely passing. The Chicago-born soul singer, best known for his work with Baby Huey & the Babysitters, was in the midst of recording his debut when he tragically died from a heart attack in 1970 at just 26. The resulting albumiunfinished at the time of his deathiwas later completed by producer Curtis Mayfield and released posthumously in 1971. A blend of psychedelic soul, funk and rock, the album's standout moments include a sprawling, otherworldly take on Sam Cooke's 'A Change Is Gonna Come' and the deeply emotive 'Hard Times', which later found its way into the lexicon of hip-hop, sampled by the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, Ghostface Killah, and Ice Cube. The work's raw energy and emotive performances give it a timeless quality, a feeling of tragic grandeur heightened by Ramey's powerful vocal presence. Tracks like 'Mama Get Yourself Together' and 'One Dragon Two Dragon' are emblematic of the freewheeling creativity of 70s soul, blending jazz-inflected structures with funk grooves that seem to stretch toward an unknown, future-facing horizon. Review: Keeping to a sadomasochistic touring schedule - juggling the dates of which with album releases between 1974 and 1977 - Bad Company were in sore need of a break following the completion of their fourth LP, Burnin' Sky. After two years, they made their return on March 17, 1979, with their fifth studio album Desolation Angels, named after the Jack Kerouac beatnik classic of the same name. A 10-track collection of blues-influenced rock was met with strong chart performance, proving that even amid the rise of punk and new wave, Bad Company's signature sound still had significant appeal. The album's standout track, 'Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy', became a gold-selling single, while tracks like 'Gone, Gone, Gone', 'Lonely for Your Love' and 'She Brings Me Love' emboldened the vocal prowess of lead larynx Paul Rodgers. The album sports a relatively polished production sheen compared to Burnin' Sky, suggesting renewal after disenchantment.

Review: Originally released in 1993 and finally being reissued now, this techno gem stands as a bold and exploratory debut that merges the pulse of Detroit techno with the UK's rich multicultural sonic landscape. The UK trio Jamie Bissmire, Lucien Thompson and John O'Connell channeled the spirit of early techno pioneers while weaving in dub, tribal rhythms, trance atmospheres and UK rave culture, creating a distinct, genre-defying sound. Tracks like 'Messenger' and 'Pacekeeper' shows their rhythmic intensity, with rolling basslines and echo-laden percussion that nod to both dub and techno traditions. 'Revelation' floats into ambient techno territory with celestial synths, while 'Earth 6' hints at what Goa trance might have sounded like had it taken cues from Detroit rather than industrial sounds. 'Better Nation' has a mesmerising rework from none other than Carl Craig, lending his Detroit touch to Bandulu's already genre-fluid sound. The album's opener, 'Guidance', blends tribal percussion, progressive structure and a mammoth bassline into something uniquely its own. Though the production bears the unmistakable marks of early 90s UK techno with its raw and experimental sounds, it's precisely this era-specific charm that gives Guidance its enduring appeal.

Review: Organic Analogue returns with a rediscovery of Beppu's rare dubbed-out electronica and circuit-bent techno. Andrew Hargreaves is the Manchester-based producer behind this alias which was first making waves back in the late-2000s. Back then it was three limited CDr EPs in 2009, which came with just 50 copies each, that made a stir and still stand up today. As such, the sought-after recordings receive a proper vinyl pressing and have been mastered by Miles Whittaker. Two distinct remixes from Demdike Stare also add further quality and contemporary context to the origins, which blend dub techno and braindance with textured noise. IPOP continues Organic Analogue's tradition of spotlighting overlooked talent having already done so with names like DJ Guy and Jean-Louis Huhta.

Review: The New Jersey-born pianist returns to the studio here for the first time since the sudden loss of bassist Scott LaFaro, whose death in 1961 marked a devastating rupture for one of jazz's most intuitive trios. Now joined by Chuck Israels on bass, Evans leads with a newfound clarityiless conversational, more contemplative. Recorded in 1962, this was the group's first step into a quieter but no less daring phase. 'Re: Person I Knew' (an anagram of producer Orrin Keepnews) sets the tone: ghostly, elliptical, and harmonically dense. 'I Fall in Love Too Easily' and 'Polka Dots and Moonbeams' drift by in breathy half-light, while 'Very Early', a waltz penned by Evans, closes the set with delicate finality. In the absence of LaFaro's dancing counterlines, Evans doesn't fill the space, but lets it speak. The result is a study in restraint: American post-bop pared down to its emotional core. Not a debut, nor a reinvention, this is a quiet reckoning and a beautifully unresolved response to loss.

Review: Black Loops directs a welters' worth of experience into Always Moving, his debut full-length for Freerange. Far beyond club tools, this is a sensitive elusion of watery neo soul instrumentation and distant broken beat jazz, and we're not surprised in this breath to learn of Black Loops' own background as a drummer. Nor is it any wonder either that such auteur's disco house regals such as Harvey Sutherland, Byron The Aquarius and Berlin vocalist Marlena Dae all appear on the record, through 'CDMX' to the ever so eerie, Erie-downstream deep house of 'Detroit Love Letter'. 'Electrical And LSD' takes after such influences as Metro Area's disco house shimmer, while tracks like 'Pleasure Ride' and 'Good Bye Berlin' further locks down the abiding nighttime tension - that least comparable part of his sound.

Review: Prolific Italian maestro Black Loops returns to Freerange with Always Moving, a debut album steeped in high-grade dance heritage. Drawing on over a decade of production, he moves beyond club tools to something more personal and musical, with guest appearances from Harvey Sutherland, Byron the Aquarius and Marlena Dae. Rooted in funk, soul and 90s grooves, these are rich, warm tracks with fully authentic swing i with much of the percussion played live by the artist himself. The result is fluid and human, from the broken beats of 'CDMX' to the shimmering chords of 'Detroit Love Letter'. Marlena Dae adds her touch to several standouts, including the disco-leaning 'Electrical' and hazy deep house of 'Pleasure Ride'. Even at its most downtempo, like the closing 'Good Bye Berlin', the album stays focused and melodic. Review: By 2004, Harold Budd was a sufferer of chronic "no, really, this is my final album" syndrome; he had claimed Avalon Sutra as his artistic curtain call, which would reach its apotheotic height under the David Sylvian and his label Samadhisound. The reality was that Budd did go on to record many another album, including a Philip Glass tribute and a solo piano album, Perhaps (2007). But this, his intended retirement, was probably his most interesting. Florid neo-noir soundscapes - mured behind soft-saturated limits of sax and trellised piano - glean an unusual sense of a Lynchian underside to domesticity and normality. A soundtrack to a part-corrupted life, this "Arabesque" record transitions into utter serenity by the time of 'Little Heart', whose faint triangles and swelling pads nail an impure and contradictory sense of alterity, resignation and peace.

New York outfit The Budos Band return with their first full-length release on Diamond West, the new label founded by band members Tom Brenneck and Jared Tankel. VII was produced by Brenneck and engineered by Simon Guzmán and has plenty of their signature taut, groove-driven tracks that blend Afro-soul, doom rock and '70s psychedelia. They were all recorded in California and feature the percussionist Rich Tarrana, who adds his own fresh texture without detracting from the raw, hypnotic MO of the band. As usual, this is music that is equal parts cinematic and visceral and is perfect for nocturnal drives and deep immersion. Now more than two decades in, The Budos Band are still able to surprise and compel.

Review: Buffalo Springfield's second album hears a reissue through Analogue Productions US. In the words of AllMusic, this record saw a decentralising of Springfield's band, with a tacit sprawling out of instrumental and production duties by the members informing on this blues folk-tinged, early psychedelic rock magnum. The mood is quotidian but fantastical at the same time: "Every day's a killing time, sun comin' up outside, no matter what this time, Saturday's child stays home..." goes the idling line on 'Everydays', just before a searing distorto-guitar note interrupts and cuts across an otherwise picturesque scene. Smooth to the point of cosmic, the record also benefits from orchestral Americana romances, which hardly signify the to come later: there's no way the idyllic 'Expecting To Fly' could predict the endless twangoffs of 'Hung Upside' for a second.

Crafted by Sydney-based Marc Dwyer, Chroma pulses with a brooding energy that fuses stark minimalism with unexpected pop leanings. A Deeper Life, then, marks a big step forward in the Helliker-Hales brothers' career. Predictably, it's borderline brilliant. Made with the assistance of a cast of collaborators and guest performers (flautist Nathan Haines, boogie revivalist Saucy Lady and original NJ garage-house hero Josh Milan included), it sees the Kiwi duo sashay their way through enveloping, musically expansive cuts - many downtempo and home-listening focused - that variously mix and match elements of deep house, nu-jazz, dub, 80s soul, hip-hop, trip-hop, Latin soul and much more besides. A genuine triumph, even by their high standards.

Review: Fraternal duo Chaos In The CBD open the latest chapter on a roundly impressive musical career, calling on an ensemble cast of creative collaborators to contribute to their debut long-player, 'A Deeper Life'. Louis and Ben 'Beans' Helliker-Hales have been on a non-stop roll since they began releasing music under the Chaos In The CBD moniker just over a decade ago. Recently adding a Fabric Presents compilation to their hefty singles catalogue, the siblings step up with arguably their most outstanding work to date. The likes of Blaze's Josh Milan, saxophonist Nathan Haines, longtime collaborator Isaac Aesili, and UK grime MC Novelist are just some of those drafted to embellish productions that range from head-nodding Balearic to the duo's more familiar dusty house thrust. Vast in scope, the collection drifts through all manner of sounds and styles, held together by a coherent production aesthetic and a gorgeously limber live musicality on display throughout. Highlights include the street soul swagger of 'Tears' (featuring Beantown disco queen, Saucy Lady), the searing soul of 'Wanna Tell Somebody', and the bittersweet deep house magnetism of 'Otaki'. All told, this is nothing short of brilliant work, arguably representing a coming of age as Chaos In The CBD simultaneously pay homage to their eclectic roots and transcend the floor-focused nature of the bulk of their previous output. Highly recommended.

Review: The full length of Tracy Chapman's self-titled debut (the 30th Anniversary Edition came out in 2018 and is now reissued again) remains as timeless as its speedometric hit, 'Fast Car'. Encapsulating Chapman's blitzed blend of folk, rock, and social commentary, this one came when the singer and instrumentalist was only just beginning to find her voice. Chapman was relatively unknown when she recorded the album, and much of her early life was marked by a sense of personal introspection: she moved to San Francisco to attend college at Tufts University, where she studied anthropology and African studies. It was during her time at Tufts that she began performing in coffeehouses, eventually leading to her discovery by producer David Kershenbaum. It would prove a challenge for Chapman to square her deeply personal, emancipatory and justice-conscious approach to music with the largely rather carnivorous music industry, but 'Talkin' 'bout a Revolution', 'Let It Rain' and 'Behind The Wall' all further highlight her political awareness and desire for change, essentially clustering around the theme of escaping into a better life.

Review: It's no wonder there's a nu-gaze movement bubbling up at the moment and showing no sign of dying down - the quality of the godfathers of the genre is just staggering. And you can count Chapterhouse as a key component of the transcendental and viscerally thrilling first wave of shoegaze. This collection features four songs that the Reading-based band recorded in January 1989 - including one that has never been released before. The track in question, 'See That Girl', is as good as any of the more direct songs that bands in their scene released in the 90s. It's their equivalent of Ride's 'Vapour Trail' and strong enough in and of itself to warrant getting the whole EP.

Review: Ray Charles stands at the crossroads of 20th-century music i born in Georgia and raised in Florida, he emerged from the Jim Crow South not just as a titan of rhythm and blues but as a shape-shifting interpreter who redefined genre boundaries by sheer force of personality. On this early landmark, his voice is the instrument i bold, broken and utterly assured. The first half pairs him with a brass-soaked big band stacked with Basie and Ellington sidemen; 'Let the Good Times Roll' and 'It Had to Be You' swing with a mischievous, winking power, while 'Two Years of Torture' is pure stage-lit agony, with Charles unflinching in the spotlight. The second half turns orchestral, lush but never polite i 'You Won't Let Me Go' and 'Come Rain or Come Shine' turn show tunes into prayer, soul bleeding through every note. Charles strips these standards of their Broadway polish and threads them through lived-in phrasing, delivered from the gut. It's a feat that would shape his catalogue for decades, but rarely with this much risk or reward.

Review: Tanika Charles has long paired throwback soul with incisive songwriting, but this latest release feels especially raw.
