Review: Leron Thomas, the Houston-born, New York-based musician behind Pan Amsterdam, has spent a life's career shearing genre boundaries; the rapper, jazz trumpeter and producer interprets a dreamlike audio-space where irreal textures intertwine, and his latest album Confines embraces this permuting sound by way of freer improvisations, merging sharp ideas with instinctive spontaneity. Pan An's offbeat, free-associative, streamy lyrics tackle race, identity, and pop culture gleeful insight, while shredder samples from gospel, jazz, and even the Grateful Dead pepper the mix with a swingeing MPC's hand. Also a tribute to his late father, Confines confides in the listener as a musical and spiritual rebirth.

Review: Built on two decades of collaboration between drummer Sam Hobbs and bassist Neil Innes, this new ATA project blends rootsy Jamaican groove with the syncopated strut of New Orleans funk. Though technically a new release, it’s more a continuation than a debut: the lineup includes jazz organist Bob Birch and session guitarist Chris Dawkins, drawing from deep wells of soul, rocksteady, and R&B. Tracks like ‘Grafter’ and ‘Bust Up’ land squarely in the crossover zone between Studio One and The Meters—raw but slick, with a tight pocket and loose-limbed flair. ‘An Autumn Sun’ leans sweet and sentimental, while ‘Strong Fish’ pays organ-heavy homage to Jackie Mittoo’s Hot Milk-era work. Elsewhere, ‘Power Cut’ and ‘Night Bus’ arrive with horn motifs that seem tailored to I Roy-style toasting, and ‘Tough Swagger’ is a heavy-lidded jam that could’ve wandered in off a Bunny Lee tape. But it’s ‘Iron Fist’ that best captures the group’s method: groove-first, melody-second, built on intuition and the friction of mismatched rhythms. Despite the vintage touchstones, it never feels like pastiche—the record balances reverence with invention, keeping one foot in Kingston and the other in Treme. For a group with so much history, it sounds impressively fresh.

Review: WA electronica duo Odesza have been watching Severance... have you? 'Music To Refine To: A Remix Companion To Severance' manifests as a seven-track EP reimagining Theodore Shapiro's score for the hit Apple TV series, the series which takes the 21-Century fixation on the idea of work-life balance to lugubrious extremes. The three-time Grammy nominees bring their signature synth-dance to the sampled atmosses of Severance, transforming Shapiro's eerie, coporatocratic sound motifs into wicked electronica abtsractions. Just as we're not quite sure what we're doing when we sit down to work at our desks, this officially Apple sanctioned release by the pair mirrors the simulacrum-similarities between commissioned remix culture and the in-out social sanctions of the fictive Lumon Corporation.

Review: John Carpenter's knack for cinematic storytelling without the screen takes centre stage on this deluxe reissue, marking ten years since the release of the great American soundtrack artist's first Lost Themes edition. The new expanded edition, complete with artwork by Greg Ruth, offers more than just a nostalgic revisit; it adds a new 7" featuring two unreleased tracks, 'Cruisin' With Mr. Scratch' and 'Dominator', both pulled from the original sessions. When it first came out, the album stood out for its vivid, visceral style, blending horror, science fiction, and eerie synthwork into standalone pieces that could easily score unseen films.

Review: Taeko Ohnuki's second album Sunshower first broke in July 1977, hastening the evolution of city pop even before it developed the name. With the mythic Ryuichi Sakamoto enlisted for musical direction, the record married J-pop, smooth jazz, and rock, as 'Summer Connection', 'Tokai', and 'Kusuri Wo Takusan' fleshed out and diffracted Ohnuki's introspective lyrics and melodic sensuality. Despite only modest initial commercial success, Sunshower garnered critical acclaim over time for its sophisticated arrangements, standing out and tall among a thick canopy of similarly flighty-slick city pop records, most of which lack that extra Sakamoto *something*.

Review: La Pambele, Bogota's salsa dura ensemble, distills the spirit of 1970s salsa while threading modern-day stories through every track. Their energetic and heartfelt music is a celebration of the culture that's so intrinsic to their city, blending bold rhythms with lyrics that hit close to home. In a city often perceived as less rhythmically charged than the coastal regions, the band defies the stereotype, delivering tracks like 'Para No Olvidar' and 'La Bella Y La Culebra' that pulse with energy and authenticity. 'Naci Mestizo', the album's title track, sees La Pambele collaborate with the seasoned Afro-Colombian folklorist Nicoyembe, adding layers of cultural depth and richness that further root the sound in Colombian heritage. The mix of piano, conga, flute, and brass on songs like 'Amargura' and 'Son Cimarron' carries a nostalgic yet forward-thinking energy, embracing the past while pushing boundaries. There's a warmth and precision in the way the orchestra weaves traditional salsa with contemporary expressions, effortlessly moving between nostalgia and modern relevance, all while telling the story of the everyday Bogotano in its boldest form.

Review: He's played with everyone from Bowie, Lou Reed and Lennon - just the tip of a truly humungous session work iceberg - as well as his longstanding service with King Crimson and Peter Gabriel, but Tony Levin's more than capable of whipping up a musical storm without any celebrity help. This is the bassist's latest solo affair, released in September 2024 and, together with a lengthy list of collaborators - among them KC guitarist Robert Fripp - it bends jazz, funk, rock and experimental soundscapery into numerous new shapes. 'Give The Cello Some' is a delight, answering the question "what kind of music would ZZ Top make if they were fronted by Captain Beefheart?" 'Road Dogs' kicks off half metal riffing, half Krautrock linear grooving before hitting a prog/jazz interface and 'Beyond The Bass Clef' is a serene, beatless, almost classical piece. Full of surprises, this is the sound of a master of the bass game following no-one else's lead for a change - and loving every moment.

Review: The reissue of New Miserable Experience is sure to bring renewed attention to American alt-rock outfit Gin Blossoms’ bittersweet breakthrough. Behind the 1992 album’s sunny melodies lies a tragic story in which founding guitarist Doug Hopkins, who penned the band's biggest hits, was fired before the record’s success and later took his own life. Songs like 'Hey Jealousy' and 'Found Out About You' capture a raw emotional turbulence that's masked by sparkling guitars and Robin Wilson’s tender vocals. All these years on, the music remains a testament to Hopkins’ brilliance and pain and so New Miserable Experience endures as a jangled, heartbreaking classic of the 90s.

Review: Originally released in April 2017, this is a reissue that reaffirms the album's pivotal role in modern darkwave. Crafted by Sydney-based Marc Dwyer, Chroma pulses with a brooding energy that fuses stark minimalism with unexpected pop leanings. Across its runtime, jagged synths and relentless drum programming frame a series of emotionally charged compositions, each one dissecting states of isolation, longing, and inner turbulence. Far from being just a genre exercise, Chroma pushes the boundaries of synth wave and post-punk, threading glimmers of melody through layers of tension and shadow. Dwyer's delivery is cold and commanding, yet there's an underlying vulnerability in how he constructs each track, always rooted in personal reflection but never static. The production is raw but intentional, giving it an immediacy that still hits with force today. Since its release, Chroma has gained a cult following, inspiring peers in the darker corners of electronic music. With two additional albums and several international tours under his belt, Dwyer has grown into a spectral mainstay of the global goth underground. The long-awaited reissue brings Chroma back into circulation where it belongs. Restored, relevant and just as magnetic as it was eight years ago.

Review: Drawing on influences from the global Cumbia scene that took root in Buenos Aires over a decade ago, El Buho presents a collection of tracks that blend entrancing traditional rhythms with modern electronic textures. The opener, 'La Cumbia Del Cafe Martinez,' sets a hypnotic tone, while 'Anglo-Colombian Expedition' merges lively tropical elements with intricate production. The darker 'La Cumbia De La Ansiedad' and earthy 'Porro Del Tucan' follow, offering variety while remaining grounded in Cumbia's roots. The remixes elevate the experience further. ARN4L2's atmospheric interpretation of 'La Cumbia Del Cafe Martinez' opens up the track into a spacious, reflective journey, while Auntie Flo's remix of 'Anglo-Colombian Expedition' adds a rhythmic intensity. La Jungla's energetic remix of 'La Cumbia De La Ansiedad' and Lagartijeando's hypnotic take on 'Porro Del Tucan' offer new perspectives on the original compositions too, making this a digital Cumbia milestone.

Review: Formed in 1995, Morcheeba - Skye Edwards and brothers Paul and Ross Godfrey - have spent nearly three decades darning their organic trip-hop to the wider global music fabric, with ear-catching success. The London trio are now raring to contrast their debut statements Fragments of Freedom (2000) and Charango (2002) with a stylistic evolution and a paean to human peace of mind. Escape The Chaos comes after many a solo project, film score, and lineup change, all of which have heard Morcheeba relocate themselves on the popular music map, with far-Eastern instrumental echoes and cinematic sublimes once again bridging divides between classic and contemporary trip hop.

Review: When it ermerged in 1994, Love Me signified a bold and sophisticated evolution of Japan's Noriko Sekiguchi's sound, marking a departure from the Lolita-esque pop structures she had previously flirted with. Rooted in trip-hop, acid house and ambient music, it's a shimmering, groove-driven statement of self-determinationian album that subverts expectations and expands upon the genre-blending experimentation she had hinted at in earlier works. From the outset, the electro-dub pulses of 'Passage Brady' set the stage for a more assertive, mature exploration of electronic textures. Tracks like 'Communication Breakdown' embrace a loose, baggy energy, while 'Love Is'ifeaturing Killing Time's Neko Saitoidives into a deeply expressive, heart-wrenching performance that embodies the album's emotional core. The transformation of Michel Polnareff's 'Love Me, Please Love Me' into a piece of angelic house music epitomises Sekiguchi's ability to reshape familiar sounds into something uniquely her own. With Love Me, Poison Girl Friend fully steps into her identity as both producer and performer. Heavy beats and intricate atmospherics drive songs like 'Slave to the Computer' and 'If You Wish', while the haunting 'Tout Est Rouge' reminds listeners of her ability to command darker moods when necessary. Shifting seamlessly between Japanese, English and French, she refuses to be confined to a single style or narrative. This is an artist in complete control, crafting a genre-fluid, deeply personal work that stands as one of the most compelling releases of its time.

Review: There’s something timeless about the way this veteran UK singer carries himself and this 2010 album, now reissued on striking red vinyl, makes that all the more clear. It feels like a continuation of the Roxy Music legacy in spirit, mood and style, with that familiar air of suave detachment and immaculate detail. The production here is lush and forward-thinking, bridging classic lounge-pop stylings with modern textures that still sound fresh over a decade later. The sleekness is no accident. Every element is meticulously placed, from the glossy synths to the hushed guitars and orchestral flourishes. 'Shameless' is one of the more adventurous tracks, pulling in electronic flourishes courtesy of Roots Manuva. It’s a bold move that actually works, blending suave vocals with a beat-driven framework that never feels forced. The real surprise, though, is the version of 'Song to the Siren'. It’s a haunting, almost fragile take that shows just how much weight his voice can carry with minimal backing. Easily one of the most affecting covers in his catalogue. 'Tender Is The Night' rounds out the highlights with a melodic, romantic glow. There's an added layer of interest with Brian Eno contributing, creating a sense of full-circle collaboration. Throughout, this album sees a seasoned artist evolving gracefully, without losing the qualities that made him magnetic in the first place.

Glass’ love of more indie influences, such the ethereal Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins means she fuses technical excellence with a more emotional led timbre that, in turn, brings you closer to her soul. ‘On The Way Down’ is a great place to start as it’s a stunning marriage of piano and vocal but when she just plays piano the hairs stand on the back of your neck, too. Review: North London musician Sam Beste is the creative force behind Vernon Spring, a long, carefully fangled project intersecting jazz, soul, ambient and experimental music. Pulling on a string of recording artistic greatness, part-inherited from his dad's record collection which packed Thelonious Monk and D'Angelo, Beste soon found himself in the world of the studio, working with the likes of Amy Winehouse, Kano, Gabriels and Joy Crookes. The Vernon Spring is his own claim to individuation, and the new LP follows twelve elegant songs, considering values of family loyalty and global responsibility in uncertain times, as they clash and harmonise in unpredictable step. Piano, electro-acoustics, spoken word and tactile ambient careens underlie the record, and features from Max Porter, Aden and Iko Niche help curate an equipoised, grounded mental mood.

Review: Tom Caruana's Salsa Verde marks the seventh chapter in Def Presse's Crate Diggers series with KPM, built around exclusive access to the exalted library music production house whose reserves have fuelled hip-hop samplers, among others, for decades. A seasoned producer and multi-instrumentalist with a now 25-year track record, Caruana takes to the craft with easy motor automaticity, handling drums, keys, bass, and guitar himself, all while using samples for colour and melody rather than structure. The result is a rich, boom-bap-rooted album inhumed in live instrumentation, plus contributions from UK and US MCs. Caruana merges subtle humour, reflections on social media, and a refined, not overwrought showmanship.

Review: Jazz composer and saxophonist Ornette Colman delivered his monumental eighth album on Atlantic in 1962, etting the stage for a weird yet delightful renaissance in jazz to come. Named after Coleman's one-off stint on tenor sax (rather than his usual alto) the brassblower is heard in full swing almost immediately after the record's start, which precariously toes the line of a virtuoso's run and gadfly's buzz. With most of the record reserved for urbane imbrovisation, the epic that unfolds is not straightforward, and is as roundabout in feel as the sonic lines trailed behind by its own many sax lines, not to mention a secondary, complementary pocket trumpet from Don Cherry.

Review: In late 19th to early 20th Century Paris, operettas were the order of the day. Cologne-born composer-cellist Jacques Offenbach and Boston conductor Arthur Fielder were chief conceivers of this terse micro-musical form, defined in the loosest sense as a "light opera". Like novellas, operettas are shorter, lighter-hearted commedia, featuring the occasional satirical jibe. Offenbach came first; he and Fielder began their diachronic dialogue in earnest in 1954, when the latter's 1954 rendition of Gaîte Parisienne - a 1938 ballet featuring many an Offenbach operetta - became a beloved reinterpretation. This loyal commemoration by the Boston Pops Orchestra at the Boston Symphony Hall eulogises Offenbach's superb orchestrations once more, in what has been described as one of the best RCA recordings of all time.

Review: Released in 2012, the Canadian electronic punks' third album marked a darker, more introspective turn for the duo. While their earlier records thrived on chaos and confrontation, III dives into a colder, more mournful landscape, channeling despair through glitchy synths and submerged vocals. The album opens with 'Plague', a storm of distorted beats and Alice Glass' haunted wails, immediately setting a bleaker tone. Tracks like 'Wrath of God' continue this suffocating atmosphere, layering harsh noise over mournful melodies in a way that feels both aggressive and fragile. Meanwhile, 'Sad Eyes' is full of catchiness amid the gloom, with a pulsing rhythm and almost danceable beat, though it's drenched in sorrow. 'Affection' is one of the most emotional tracks on the record, with shimmering synths and a distant, aching vocal performance that feels like reaching for something already lost. Closing track 'Child I Will Hurt You' strips things back even further, ending the album on a ghostly, minimalist note. III isn't an easy listen, but that's exactly its power. A harsh, beautiful collapse into darkness, not to mention Crystal Castles' most cohesive and affecting album.

Review: Arthur Fiedler's long tenure with the Boston Pops produced a vast archive of recordings, many leaning into fan-serving territory, but this collection proves the orchestra's range extended far beyond light classical fare. Here, Prokofiev's 'Three Oranges Suite' gets a full wax treatment, moving well beyond its often-isolated 'March' into the suite's other vivid vignettes. The rearrangement of 'Les Sylphides' tiptoes between charm and kitsch, while Liszt's symphonic poems receive unexpectedly muscular renderings. 'Mazeppa' bursts with theatric flair, while 'Les Preludes' is approached with drive and precision, opposing overcooked symbolism. Fiedler's flair for drama never came at the expense of control, and this set captures a conductor who bridged populism and classical heft with confidence.

Review: There's not many musicians who embody the sound of American rock 'n' roll as much as Bob Seger does. From the brooding introspection of 'Turn the Page' to the anthemic uplift of 'Like a Rock', this package of hits traverses decades of deeply resonant, unpretentious storytelling set to thundering drums and searing guitar. This greatest hits makes a powerful return on vinyl, pressed impeccably and sounding every bit as raw and soulful as the legacy it encapsulates. What sets Seger apart is his ability to merge working-class grit with melodic muscle. 'Night Moves' remains one of rock's most poignant coming-of-age narratives, while 'Against the Wind' offers quiet rebellion with a wistful heart. Even lighter tracks like 'Old Time Rock and Roll' bristle with conviction and energy, showing Seger's deep reverence for the roots of the genre. Comparisons to Springsteen and Van Morrison are natural, but while Seger's characters and cadences echo theirs, his brand of rustbelt rock is its own breed: proud, grounded and radiantly human. Back on vinyl and sounding terrific with its analogue warmth, it's quikcly clear why this compilation became the best-selling catalogue album of its decade.

Review: Puma Blue, the project of South-London-born, Atlanta-based Jacob Allen, moves in a starkly different direction with this latest release. Stripping away the layered trip-hop, jazz, and electronica influences of previous works, he now focuses on a more direct and vulnerable form of songwriting. With just his guitar and voice, Allen crafts an album that feels intimate, raw, and deeply personal. Each track is a careful balance of simplicity and complexity. On 'Tapestry', the narrative unfolds like a dense, aching reflection, while 'Hotel Room' captures a moment of quiet melancholy with an almost confessional tone. In contrast, 'In the Absence of You' is stark in its honesty, delivering a minimalist sentiment that resonates with painful clarity. The absence of the full band setup places the weight of emotion solely on Allen's shoulders, allowing his vocal delivery and guitar work to shine. The result is a profoundly affecting listen, one that's less about expansive sound and more about the intimate space between notes, where every breath and pause feels significant. It's a deeply personal exploration of solitude and longing, executed with haunting simplicity.

Review: Billie Holiday's late career 1958 LP through Verve Records caught the legendary singer at a relatively intimate stage: substance abuse compounded financial difficulties, which imposed a toll on her already turbulent personal life, and Holiday's once-pure, all-powerful voice was showing signs of wear. A title like All Or Nothing At All would certainly seem to express the captive intensity of an industry that "breaks" artists in more ways than one, and despite the mixed reviews on release, this small combo-backed record is of one artist's broken but still functioning sensitivity. With Harry "Sweets" Edison and saxophonist Ben Webster, Holiday croons over 12 tracks, recorded over five sessions in 1956 and 1957, showcasing a more restrained vocal style that pierces clearly through and despite pharyngeal ills.

Review: Exploring themes of introspection, healing, and transformation, Raveena's latest album marries r&b and pop with traditional Indian instrumentation, offering personal sonic journey in sloshing, bubbly pop. Two years on from her debut Asha's Awakening, Where The Butterflies Go... was forerun by three singles: 'Pluto', 'Lucky' and 'Junebug' with JPEGMAFIA. All echoed a present day Erykah Badu meets meets Bjork, though the album's exclusive tracks also keep firm to a sharp, polished tone. Reflected on the album's core symbolism, using the butterfly as a paradoxical metaphor for personal growth and recumbence: "Butterflies are so delicate that they have to hide in leaves and flowers until the rain passes so that their wings don't get crushed in the rain. I felt like that was kind of a metaphor for where I was in my life. I needed to go back to comfortito deep restiand stop weathering storms."

Review: Either you weren't born, or Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms turning 40 this year will make you feel decidedly long in the tooth. It's an unquestionable landmark for one of the best-selling albums of all time. To mark the occasion, the London-formed band's fifth studio album is being reissued across a bunch of formats, with this five album box set including a full live set from their 1985 show in San Antonio, capturing Mark Knopfler, John Illsley, Alan Clark and Guy Fletcher in their stadium-filling prime. As for the album itself i well, the vastly emotive 'Brothers in Arms', fuzz guitar earworm 'Money for Nothing' and feelgood singalong 'Walk of Life' pretty much speak for themselves. Classic pop-rock, this is a must-have for Straits fans, and well worth a listen for anyone who happens to be uninitiated.

Review: This definitive 2025 edition of the Donkey Kong Country soundtrack has been meticulously recreated by Jammin' Sam Miller using original SNES data and studio-grade equipment. Originally released in 1994, the game's music, featuring classics like 'Aquatic Ambiance' and 'Fear Factory', redefined video game soundtracks. This triple-vinyl boxset takes in all of the many highlights with fixed playback speeds and refreshed packaging. It's a nostalgic listen for those old enough to have been gaming back in the mid-nineties but also a rich source of samples for adventurous modern producers.

Review: All Day I Steal This Album is Rico Friebe's a long-shelved, surreal deep house work. Finalised in summer 2021, the project took an unexpected turn after the German producer dreamt of a woman's face in monochrome, unfamiliar and striking. Two months later, he met her in real life. After sharing with her the unreleased music, she became the record's sole listener before mysteriously vanishing, a personal tragedy befalling her soon after. The experience prompted Friebe to shelve the album and instead release Jenni, a raw tribute that raised awareness of violence against women; then following his own assault and hearing loss, and amid ongoing harassment of his artistic work in 2024, Friebe chose to reclaim the narrative. Now retitled All Day I Steal This Album, the release takes retroactive hold as an act of artistic defiance and personal (dis)closure.

Review: The final Soul Media recording marks a shift from 70s jazz-rock towards something richer, more refined — less about force, more about feel. Jiro Inagaki’s soundworld here is open-ended but precise, framed by Norio Maeda’s meticulous arrangements and a studio band that breathes through every turn. ‘Memory Lane’ is as mellow as its name implies, full of soft brass swells and swirling keys that hint at nostalgia without sinking into it. ‘I Will Give You Samba’ offers contrast — sharp-edged, quick-stepping and filled with rhythmic crosscurrents, while ‘Take My Hand’ struts with effortless cool, its groove compact but expressive. The palette is wide, from ballads like ‘Dried Flowers’ to the cinematic sweep of ‘Double Images’, all held together by a sense of elegant restraint. Everything is placed just so — from Eri Ohno’s gliding vocals to Tadayuki Harada’s moody baritone — but nothing feels stiff. This isn’t fusion in the usual sense: it’s more like the closing of one chapter, the opening of another, and a deliberate nod to a musical future Inagaki seemed to sense coming. Still vivid, still fresh, and far more than just a footnote in Japanese jazz history.

Review: A standout in Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s early recordings rep, We Free Kings (1962) snaps the young multi-instrumentalist in sharp and fitted suited form, striking a confident balance between bop-rooted sophistication and latent warm expression. The album has two rhythm sections - Hank Jones and Wendell Marshall on one, Richard Wyands and Art Davis on the other - with Charlie Persip anchoring on drums throughout. While the majority evidences Kirk’s prowess as composer and arranger, his interpretation of Charlie Parker’s 'Blues for Alice’ curves the ball with a fierce, swinging homage; clearly, there’s no peace for this mouthpiece. Part of Verve’s Acoustic Sounds Series, this one comes again with all-analog remastering from the original tapes, pressed on 180-gram vinyl and housed in a deluxe gatefold sleeve.

Review: Hailing from Herne Bay in the south east of England, Kevin Ayers emerged as a pioneering figure in the nearby Canterbury scene. His second solo release with the Whole World is a testament to the experimental spirit of early 70s UK music, mixing progressive rock with psychedelia and avant-garde influences, blending whimsical ballads and intricate soundscapes. Tracks like 'May I?' and 'Rheinhardt & Geraldine' show off his knack for fusing carefree melodies with more experimental structures, while 'Underwater' and 'Clarence in Wonderland' explore the era's boundary-pushing approach to sound. Featuring contributions from Mike Oldfield and Robert Wyatt, the record's genre-defying nature helped cement Ayers as a key figure in progressive rock. Though originally released in 1970, this album remains an influential work, still resonating with contemporary artists drawn to its mix of playfulness and musical innovation.

Review: Dr. Dre's The Chronic gave rise to such heavy-hitters as 'Nuthin' But A 'G' Thang' and 'Let Me Ride', but what about its many "reimaginings" over the years? With The Ghronic, released in 2023, West Coast rappers 38 Spesh and Conway The Machine can't be said to have laid down their own version more so than they did treat the Dre touchstone as a starting point, dropping a nine-track array of similar G-funk whistling lowrider bumps, readapted for the contemporary New Yorker, and yet with fresh lyrical themes and subject matters. Reissued two years later on green vinyl, after an initially white-sleeved run, the productions are ever clean and the flows lackadaisical. Features from Lloyd Banks, Che Noir, Benny The Butcher and Elcamino cement the bluffing rep of a brag-heavy machine duopoly.

Review: OONA Recordings presents a raw, atmospheric score by Frederikke Hoffmeier, known professionally as Puce Mary. A Danish composer and performer, Hoffmeier is known for her uncompromising and experimental approach to sound, with her work often delving into intense, dissonant soundscapes that blur the line between music and noise. With a renown for creating visceral, emotionally charged compositions, Hoffmeier's fusion of electro-acoustic elements, organic textures and industrial sounds creates a tense, disorienting atmosphere that pulls us deeper into the psychological complexities of the film. Her ability to weave unsettling and fragmented soundscapes intensifies the emotional weight, moving beyond conventional film scoring into a far more visceral experience that doesn't just accompany the visuals, but becomes integral to the narrative's emotional pull. Tracks like 'Stuck, Faces' and 'Karoline's Theme' embody the emotional undercurrents, while 'Dark Matter (Ether)' and 'Ether Hallucinations' explore the darker, more abstract elements of the narrative. Hoffmeier's innovative approach redefines the film score, making it as much a character as the people on screen.

Review: Alan Sparhawk isn't one for large crowds or the showy side of fame, yet over the course of his career, his influence has expanded far beyond his low-key persona. As the frontman of Low, the band he founded in the early 90s in Duluth, Minnesota, Sparhawk's distinct style has permeated not just indie rock but also the broader sphere of music that prizes depth over spectacle. The hallmark of Sparhawk's songwriting is the austere, almost minimalist beauty he coaxes from the sparsest of arrangements. His approach to music is inextricable from his sense of placeiDuluth's biting winters, its isolationieverything about the environment feeds into the slow-moving intensity of Low's sound. Musically, the album moves through a variety of textures, from the folk-tinged melodies of 'Heaven' and 'Get Still' to the raw emotional power of 'Screaming Song' and 'Don't Take Your Light.' The latter is particularly stirring, with its swelling fiddles and cello lines, embodying the depth of feeling that pours out during the recording. There's a certain urgency to the musician immediacy that comes from being in a room full of people who understand what it means to create together. The track 'Stranger' is imbued with an intimate, communal spirit, while 'Torn & in Ashes' builds on layers of banjo and mandolin, giving it a rich, earthy feel. Even as the sounds shift, there's an underlying consistency in the raw honesty of Sparhawk's voice and the way the band responds to it. Overall, the record a sense of continuity, reminding us that music, when made with those closest to you, becomes a vessel for lasting memories and support.

Review: Earth's live performance at KOKO in 2016 captures the Olympia-formed experimental drone crew's evolving sound in its most immersive form. The trioiDylan Carlson, Jodie Cox and Adrienne Davisioffers a slow-burn journey through layers of doom, drone and minimalist textures that feel as weighty as they do precise. The set begins with a familiar depth, the reverberating basslines and crushing guitar tones building a space of deliberate tension. Tracks like 'Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull' unfurl with a vast and spatial quality, while 'Even Hell Has Its Heroes' crawls along in thick, oppressive layers. What's striking is the restraint: Earth never rushes; each note, each pause, is deliberate, serving as a meditation on the slow, heavy force of sound. The minimalist approach feels almost tactile in its quiet moments, as if the silence itself is as profound as the noise. This live offering underlines their mastery of creating music that moves beyond noise, into a deeper exploration of space, sound, and feeling.

Review: Lyon musicologists Macadam Mambo allow The Jaffa Kid ampler extra space to flex their experimental side. Though prior releases by the artist have verged fuller in the direction of jungly, 'A Teq Approach' hears the artist abstract and remould their breaks and ambiances to delicious degree, mechanising but breathing new life into an otherwise mostly single-tempo approach. Off the back of an almost daily production output on Soundcloud comes this 12-track album, where gestalt breaks are heat-set, cast into all tempos; 'A Calm Momentum' recalls the best of Skee Mask after his move away from techno proper, while 'Different Text' brings a hermeneutic otherness, interpreting constellated skies of detuned arp-bliss and hoovering, soundscaped lows. A choice selection for fans of of AFX, ERP, Drexciya, u-Ziq or Luke Slater.

Review: Fuss and fluff are thrown by the wayside on ‘More Water’, hearing Sub Basics (Tom Wood) and Witch Trials (formerly of the label MYRYRS) join forces for a new collaboration on Temple Of Sound. Sleek, unfussy dub techno, and yet still unafraid of wetness past the knees, the likes of ’November’, ’Technique’ and ‘Liquify’ are seriously well simmered slammers, their projectile chords and wide multichannel drums lending themselves a firmer than firm sectional density, with a mean hardness rivalling that of chromium. Only the B side dares step into ricketier territory, with ‘4AM’ and ‘Morning Meltdown’ increasingly conveying that hanging-by-a-thread feeling all to familiar to the early hours floor fiends among us.

Review: Japan's Envy created one of the most respected post-rock screamo albums of all time with this third album of theirs. Originally released in 2001 on Japense punk label H.G. Fact and again as a limited released in 2003 on Dim Mak Records in the U.S., with not many physical copies printed they've been scarcely available. Thankfully, that's all about to change now that this enduring masterpiece of foreboding post rock and blisteringly powerful screams is getting repressed. Envy's strength lies in their ability to flip flop between introspective atmospheric passages and intense guttural aggression within a track and for it to be cohesive. That said, where they don't relent, like on 'Invisible Thread', the adrenaline really kicks in and it's a palpable reenactment of the atmosphere at their live shows.

Review: Releasing just one album, this little known mysterious Japanese singer left a legacy that has only grown over time, especially with the recent resurgence of interest in 'city pop'. That 1982 LP stands as a masterpiece of the genre, blending smooth jazz, funk and pop into a warm, sophisticated sound that this reissue celebrates. The title track, 'Love Trip', sets the tone immediately with breezy guitars, mellow synths and Mamiya's effortlessly cool vocal delivery. Songs like 'Midnight Joke' and 'Tasogare' show her skill in crafting lush, sunset-soaked atmospheres, each melody gliding with a relaxed elegance. 'All Or Nothing' brings a touch of funkier basslines and tighter grooves, while 'What A Broken Heart Can Do' leans into bittersweet ballad territory without losing the album's polished, air-light touch. Throughout, Mamiya's voice is pure yet emotive, always serving the sleek, gliding arrangements that define the record. Love Trip is filled with shimmering keys, silky guitar riffs and impeccably tight rhythm sections i a dreamy slice of escapism that feels both timeless and nostalgic. Even with just one album to her name, Takako Mamiya captured the spirit of city pop at its most luxurious and enduring.

Review: Enji’s music unobtrusively blends her Mongolian heritage with modern jazz, creating a sound that’s both grounded and innovative. Her voice, deeply rooted in Mongolian tradition, effortlessly carries the weight of her cultural history while exploring new sonic territories. Collaborating with musicians like Elias Stemeseder and Robert Landfermann, her compositions gain depth and richness, with every track offering intricate arrangements that highlight her vocal prowess and emotional clarity. ‘Ulbar’ stands out, capturing the quiet beauty of a sunset—its vivid, fleeting nature reflecting the transient moments Enji often sings about. In ‘Much,’ there’s a sense of bittersweet nostalgia, urging the listener to slow down and appreciate the fleeting nature of time. On ‘Ergelt,’ Enji explores themes of memory and identity, her lyrics contemplating the distance between past and present with quiet introspection. Her ability to balance both traditional Mongolian folk elements and contemporary jazz creates a sound that’s both unique and accessible. Enji’s music is a reflection of her own journey—moving between Mongolia and Germany, tradition and modernity. Her work is a testament to the enriching experience of embracing multiple cultural identities, offering listeners a rich, textured world of sound that’s constantly evolving.

Review: Stephen Wilson Jr. brings a raw and personal lens to music, shaped by his roots in Indiana and life in Nashville. His deluxe edition of Son of Dad expands on the autobiographical debut, reemerging with two new live tracks: a stirring rendition of Ben E King's 'Stand By Me' and the powerful tribute 'I'm A Song', written for his late father. On top comes overlaid ten, stripped-back acoustic takes on fan favourites such as 'Cuckoo', 'Year To Be Young 1994', and 'Grief Is Only Love'. The deluxe four disc vinyl edition comes after a strong run on the iTunes country chart, where the album remained in the top ten for seven weeks. Wilson Jr.'s momentum continues with a sold-out tour and a growing presence on late-night TV, including appearances on Seth Meyers, Colbert, and Jools Holland.

Recorded in Spain over 2024, the new LP shares a bed with its predecessor, Receiver (2009, as Gerard Love lends his voice to a new render of Popp's plush 2004 tune, 'Save'; Love previously appeared on the Under Covers compilation with a Frank Popp cover and returns here with striking effect. Also featured is Nicke Andersson - veteran of Entombed, Hellacopters, and The Solution - bringing a punky energy to 'Caught in a Web', a Northern Soul burner with an unmistakable Magic Touch swing. Emma Noble, meanwhile, beams with shimmering girl-group charisma on 'Unstoppable'.

Review: There aren't many soundtracks that do as good a job of instantly summoming up the era of their creation than this. Released alongside the cult vampire flick in 1987, this ten-track album encapsulates the 80s sonic landscape, pairing bombastic rock with eerie, atmospheric compositions. This new reissue starts with 'Good Times' by INXS & Jimmy Barnes with an electrified take on The Easybeats' 60s hit. Its energetic riffs and raspy vocals create a charged introduction, though its upbeat nature contrasts the film's dark themes. The mood shifts with Lou Gramm's 'Lost in the Shadows (The Lost Boys)', a pulsing, synth-laden rock anthem. Gramm's impassioned delivery, particularly on the chilling chorus, heightens the sense of adventure and peril. Roger Daltrey's interpretation of 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me' brings a dramatic, soulful weight to Elton John's classic, perfectly complementing the film's themes of isolation and nocturnal existence. Echo & The Bunnymen's 'People Are Strange' - the biggest hit from the OST - pays homage to The Doors while adding a sharper, post-punk edge, fitting seamlessly into the film's eerie, outsider atmosphere. Then comes the crown jewel: Gerard McMann's 'Cry Little Sister'. This haunting, gothic anthem is the film's lifeblood, with brooding synths, ghostly choirs and McMann's desperate, evocative vocals crafting an unforgettable sonic identity. The latter half of the album maintains momentum with Eddie & The Tide's 'Power Play' and Tim Cappello's 'I Still Believe', the latter dominated by a wailing saxophone and fervent vocals. Mummy Calls' 'Beauty Has Her Way' delivers a brooding yet melodic interlude before Thomas Newman's atmospheric 'To The Shock of Miss Louise' closes the album on an eerie instrumental note. Bridging pop, new wave and gothic rock, The Lost Boys OST is as immortal as its cinematic counterpartiseductive, moody and undeniably iconic.

Review: Serving as follow up to 2023's acclaimed breakout third full-length Take Me Back To Eden, London's elusive, masked progressive metal mystics Sleep Token return with Even In Arcadia. Renowned for their genre-fluid melding of djent, metalcore, post-rock with further leftfield elements of post-classical, hip-hop, trap and indie-pop, the project led by the enigmatic Vessel has seen a massive expansion in popularity since the release of their last album. Set to headline Download 2025 before embarking on their first US Arena Tour, their newest endeavour promises to maximise all of their sonic abandon and outdo their own blueprint in the process, with lead single 'Emergence' starting life as a piano ballad before morphing into an ambi-trap groove metal anthem until fading with a lush, jazzy saxophone and piano finish. No doubt, this will be one of the highest selling/streaming/controversial/debated/talked about metal-centric titles to be released this year.

Review: Eric Hilton, one half of Washington D.C.'s Thievery Corporation, delivers a solo record that plays out like a dusty, world-weary mixtapeirooted in trip hop and ambient lounge but elevated by a lighter, more soulful touch. 'Life (In The Deep End)' sets the tone, all liquid basslines and slouchy psychedelia, before Puma Ptah delivers smooth vocal turns on the sweetly melancholic 'Leave It All' and the funkier, more libidinous 'All I Want'. Natalia Clavier, meanwhile, lends ghostly tenderness to 'Je ne t'aime plus', the cinematic 'Sol Interior', and the standout 'L'Ocean'ithe most transportive thing here, all pillowy pads and swooning trip hop poise. 'Behind My Eyes' roughens things up with crunchy breaks, and 'Burkina Faso' brings a dubbed-out D.C. bounce. By the end, 'Madame Asha' and 'Beautiful Moment' circle back to soft, expansive textures, shimmering with late-night clarity. Held together by its melodic generosity and shifting moods, this is one of Hilton's most listenable records to date.

Review: Originally released in 1993, this vivid snapshot of Moby's first steps into the electronic world is now faithfully reissued for a new generation, capturing the raw energy and creativity of his formative rave years in the early 90s underground scene. The collection notably includes the original version of 'Go', the Twin Peaks-sampling track that would later become a global anthem in remixed form. 'Voodoo Child' is as an undeniable rave classic, pulsing with an infectious drive that still commands dancefloors. Deep cuts like 'Drug Fits the Face' and the ambient 'Mobility' reveal Moby's range i from techno's sweaty peaks to its more introspective valleys. Tracks such as 'Permanent Green', 'Barracuda' and 'UHF3' dive deeper into darker, edgier sounds that remain highly influential in today's techno evolution. The production feels raw yet full of vision, reflecting a time when rave music was still unpolished and thrillingly experimental. Early Underground isn't just a nostalgia trip; it's a crucial document of electronic history. For anyone curious about Moby's roots or the gritty, euphoric spirit of early 90s rave culture, there's no better place to start.

The Revelations - "I Love You For All Seasons"
Review: Ghostface Killah's 36 Seasons, first released in 2014, plays out like a gritty graphic novel; we follow Ghostface's maskless alter-ego Tony Starks as he returns to Staten Island after nine years in solitary. Expecting to reunite with his old life, he instead finds his community in disarray, friends turned enemies and betrayal lurking around every corner. So, fuelled by revenge and a broken heart, Starks becomes a reluctant antihero, navigating a grave landscape of corruption, street politics and lost love. The album unfolds over soul-drenched production from The Revelations, creating a cinematic backdrop for the narrative's descent into movie violence and moral compromise. This reissue through Salvation keeps true to the album's original totting of 14 tracks, eschewing the extra ten on the deluxe edition.

Review: Japanese singer/songwriter/producer Tatsuro Yamashita's latest marks a bold step forward in his ongoing evolution as a musical force, most specifically as a pioneer of the 'city pop' sound. Far from his earlier, more polished pop sensibilities, this release delves into the subtle interplay between soul, jazz and funk, wrapped in lush, sophisticated production. Tracks like 'High Pressure Girl' and 'Merry-Go-Round' reveal a deeper emotional core, where complex arrangements meet timeless melodies. Yamashita's expert use of space and texture pulls you into a world that feels both intimate and expansive, drawing on influences that span from the silky smoothness of 70s soul to the warm grooves of early 80s pop. The work pulses with a sense of nostalgia, yet feels forward-thinking, a bridge between past and present. What stands out here is the transparency of Yamashita's approach to songwritingieach note feels carefully considered and every shift in rhythm deliberate. Tracks like 'Christmas Eve' and 'In the City' carry an understated elegance, as if time itself has slowed down to match the pace of the music. The compositions shift between bright, shimmering highs and deep, reflective lows, creating a dynamic yet cohesive listening experience. The idea is clear: it offers a glimpse into Yamashita's artistry while inviting us to engage with his creative process, blending analog warmth with intricate production techniques that resonate with emotional depth and maintain striking sonic clarity.
