Review: Hip hop super group Run The Jewels aka Brooklyn-based rapper-producer El-P and Atlanta-based rapper Killer Mike continue to turn out new albums that continue to get a great reception. But at the same time, their old albums are still much sought after and so are being reissued. Run The Jewels 2 first came back in 2014 and received widespread acclaim from critics. They appreciated its darker, more layered production and Killer Mike and El-P's lyricism and chemistry and its guest contributions from the likes of Zach de la Rocha, Travis Barker and Diane Coffee.

Review: Pink Floyd's filmed performance in the haunting ruins of Pompeii has always been one of the band's most enigmatic moments, and this newly reworked version reveals an even deeper level of intimacy and chaos. Review: Amid a comprehensive Doors reissuing effort by Rhino Records comes a new re-press of their storm-whipping sixth record. Infamously the last album to feature the band's leading symbolic light and 27-club member Jim Morrison - who died two months after the album's release - LA Woman does indeed sound like a last hurrah, reigniting the band's debutant rollicking rock flame after a relatively dozy lull in sound at their career mi point. Marked by rip-roaring blues and a latterly throatier vocal delivery by Morrison, 'Been Down So Long', 'LA Women', and 'Hyacinth House' evidence a loyalty and an obsession with classic and raw blues. The jangly hit single 'Love Her Madly' would be one of the few songs on the record not to incorporate the Southern American sound, by and large. Steeped in a controversial history encircling the Doors' later career - Morrison had been charged with profanity and indecent exposure for stripping naked at a concert in Miami in the year before recording - LA Woman does indeed have a righteous, raunchy, flippant, "f*** it" charge about it.

Review: Vick Lavander is a name that has always been a byword for deep house quality. His sound is couched in a classic template but comes with subtle tweaks and plenty of its own musical character. BEYOND is a bumper collection of beats which proves just that. There are silky and cosmically minded sounds like 'Time & Time Again' next to subtly jazzy dancers like 'Sunset BLVD' and dubby, elegant grooves like the life-affirming 'Grace'. The pace picks up with joints like 'Knights' but never at the expense of atmosphere and slows right down with swab-tinged downbeat delights like 'Good Timing'. A magnificently rich work.

Review: The full length of Tracy Chapman's self-titled debut (the 30th Anniversary Edition came out in 2018 and is now reissued again) remains as timeless as its speedometric hit, 'Fast Car'. Encapsulating Chapman's blitzed blend of folk, rock, and social commentary, this one came when the singer and instrumentalist was only just beginning to find her voice. Chapman was relatively unknown when she recorded the album, and much of her early life was marked by a sense of personal introspection: she moved to San Francisco to attend college at Tufts University, where she studied anthropology and African studies. It was during her time at Tufts that she began performing in coffeehouses, eventually leading to her discovery by producer David Kershenbaum. It would prove a challenge for Chapman to square her deeply personal, emancipatory and justice-conscious approach to music with the largely rather carnivorous music industry, but 'Talkin' 'bout a Revolution', 'Let It Rain' and 'Behind The Wall' all further highlight her political awareness and desire for change, essentially clustering around the theme of escaping into a better life.

Review: Given that even their most dancefloor-focused tunes are remarkably deep, immersive and sonically detailed, you'd think that Chaos In The CBD's music would suit the album format - it's just that until now, they've not recorded a full-length. A Deeper Life, then, marks a big step forward in the Helliker-Hales brothers' career. Predictably, it's borderline brilliant. Made with the assistance of a cast of collaborators and guest performers (flautist Nathan Haines, boogie revivalist Saucy Lady and original NJ garage-house hero Josh Milan included), it sees the Kiwi duo sashay their way through enveloping, musically expansive cuts - many downtempo and home-listening focused - that variously mix and match elements of deep house, nu-jazz, dub, 80s soul, hip-hop, trip-hop, Latin soul and much more besides. A genuine triumph, even by their high standards.

Review: This is The Doors' masterpiece - their Led Zeppelin IV; their Dark Side Of The Moon. Jim Morrison and co. dimmed down the synth, brass and strings of their previous album, The Soft Parade, and cranked up their blues rock DNA. Already home to the likes of the Yardbirds and Cream, the British public lapped up this invigorating new sense of direction and upon its release in 1969, it became their biggest UK chart success. 'Roadhouse Blues' is a rabble-rousing performance with a sense of swagger and snarl that reflects the character of the then bearded Morrison, who was looking a far cry from the clean shaven boho poet that entered the scene earlier on in the 60s. Another banger on here is 'Indian Summer'. Although for totally different reasons. It's no wonder this track was used to soundtrack the desert peyote trip in Oliver Stone's Doors film, as it's among their most languid and psychedelic work ever.

Review: "I've always loved the Doors. I know it's kind of fashionable to think the Doors are naff, but I don't give a f*ck about that." The words of Matt Berry, not ours. But we have to agree. The songs here on The Doors' second album are some of the finest to ever be pressed onto wax. 'People Are Strange' is one of the most stunning singles ever and 'Love Me Two Times' is one of the catchiest songs of the 60s. The Doors were at the forefront of innovation in rock and so they included a wide range of instruments, including the marimba and they were among the first in rock to incorporate the Moog synthesizer. Their producer, Paul A. Rothchild, was instrumental in this, providing a then cutting edge eight-track recording machine. The results of recording to tape like this are supreme and it's no wonder people are returning to this style, favouring it ahead of clunky computer-based programmes.

Review: The third album by The Doors from 1968 made heavier use of improvisation, opposing their earlier reliances on pure composition. Responsible in large part for what has become known as "third album syndrome" - the tertiary equivalent of the infamous "sophomore slump", whereby, in either case, bands struggle to come up with original material after a stonking debut or two - the album provoked mixed reactions on release, owing to its loosened, comparatively slack sound, in contrast to their raucous debut and second LPs. While Jim Morrison's worsening alcoholism provoked such skepticisms at the time, the album was embraced by fans in hindsight, and now this Rhino Records release cements that legacy with new original liners and rare photos. Elements of their original sonic buzz still remain, as on the title track, where twinging stereo twangs complement expectant, purgatory tenors from Morrison.

Review: Among heads, this is of the most hotly championed hip-hop collab records of all time - and yet it is all too unknown. Doomstarks is the fabled collaboration of masked raconteur come rapper MF Doom and one of nine sonic samurai, Ghostface Killah (here known as Tony Starks); Swift & Changeable: The Prequel is their quick-wristed, mic-proximate debut mixtape, released in 2012. Just as some comic books series would prologue their main stories with pre-release strips, The Prologue served as the "unofficial" warm-up to accompany the pair's long-anticipated debut album of the same name. The Prequel hears some of Doom and Ghost's most popular tracks and collabs from various projects, including the original Doomstarks tune 'Vistory Laps'; the album provides a chopped but not screwed experience, playing out in the style of a gapless, scratch-heavy DJ mix.

Review: The Doors' fourth album The Soft Parade was a remarkable return to form in the milieu of jazz rock and pop rock. This was a bold stylistic move made in seeming response to fan distaste at their third LP, 1968's Waiting For The Sun, an album deemed lethargic by some critics compared to their earliest smashes. Review: Originally released in 2002, this album remains one of Washington-based duo's most well-known albums, blending trip-hop, downtempo, and an eclectic mix of global influences. While it's often categorised as sophisticated lounge music, its world-fusion approach offers a real depth, from hypnotic opener 'Heaven's Gonna Burn Your Eyes', featuring Emiliana Torrini's airy vocals over a light, looping keyboard melody and deep bassline, onwards. The track's ethereal quality sets a contemplative tone and back s it up with dynamic shifts that make it equally as engaging. 'Facing East' brings in Middle Eastern violin phrases and tribal drums, adding a richer texture. Here, Thievery Corporation excels, weaving together global sounds into a flowing, immersive piece.
