Review: From rehearsing in dungeons to renting out estates in Bel Air, Black Sabbath did everything they could to muster up the creative spark for their now iconic fifth full-length Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Exhausted from a ludicrously demanding touring schedule whilst battling sever cocaine addiction following the album cycle for Vol. 4, the band would regroup at Clearwell Castle in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire where guitarist Tony Iommi would conceive the now timeless and pioneering riff to the opening title-track, which many to this day still cite as one of the first true pieces of psych/doom metal. Balancing their macabre early material with the more leftfield experimental cuts like the synth-laden 'Who Are You?' and the fan-favourite closer 'Spiral Architect', five decades on, the dust has settled enough for most fans to agree that this was the last truly great LP from the Ozzy run.

Review: The full length of Tracy Chapman's self-titled debut (the 30th Anniversary Edition came out in 2018 and is now reissued again) remains as timeless as its speedometric hit, 'Fast Car'. Encapsulating Chapman's blitzed blend of folk, rock, and social commentary, this one came when the singer and instrumentalist was only just beginning to find her voice. Chapman was relatively unknown when she recorded the album, and much of her early life was marked by a sense of personal introspection: she moved to San Francisco to attend college at Tufts University, where she studied anthropology and African studies. It was during her time at Tufts that she began performing in coffeehouses, eventually leading to her discovery by producer David Kershenbaum. It would prove a challenge for Chapman to square her deeply personal, emancipatory and justice-conscious approach to music with the largely rather carnivorous music industry, but 'Talkin' 'bout a Revolution', 'Let It Rain' and 'Behind The Wall' all further highlight her political awareness and desire for change, essentially clustering around the theme of escaping into a better life.

Review: A limited-edition version of one of the high-water marks of The Cult's back catalogue. Originally released in 2001, it was their first album in more than six years and showcases the band's return to their signature rock sound while also dabbling with new techniques. It's the only Cult album to feature one of rock's all-time greats - Guns N' Roses' Matt Sorum - on drums. And it's immensely powerful, with 'War (The Process)' and 'Take The Power' leaving you breathless thanks to flashy guitar solos and head banging choruses. Elsewhere, 'Nico' slows things down a bit - a lighter in the air moment perhaps. Overall, it's an epic rock production singing all the right notes by bringing a dash of goth to classic rock.

Review: The Cure's live album 'Paris' catches the band in the summer of 1992. This tour came after a siesmic shift in the previously fairly static line up of the goth pop icons, with original frontman Robert Smith and long serving bassist Simon Gallup joined by drummer Jason Cooper, keyboardist Roger O'Donnell and guitar player Perry Bamonte for the first time, all of whom remain part of their live ensemble 30 years later. The setlist starts with their evergreen opener 'Shake Dog Shake' but this selection double vinyl captures more deep cuts - 'The Figurehead', 'One Hundred Years' and 'Apart' as examples - than hits, although the dark pop of 'Close To Me' does make an appearance close to its end.

Now Warner and Rhino honour the album's boisterous legacy with a comprehensive reissued version, with new mixes and previously unreleased live recordings all in tow. Review: This brilliant 1980 debut release by the The English Beat set them on course to become one of the most influential groups to emerge from the British Two Tone Ska movement. This album is wall-to-wall bangers and showcases some of their very best tunes, with earworm melodies encasing punchy and irreverent lyrics. Opening cut, 'I Confess' is a case in point: "Just out of spite / I confess I've ruined three lives / Now don't sleep so tight." Musically, The English Beat had style, substance and the ability to baffle and challenge their heroes. Guitarist Dave Wakeling stumped guitar heroes with his "Dad-Odd" guitar tuning. It's said that Pete Townshend phoned Wakeling up and said: "I'm sitting here with David Gilmour and we're having a bit of trouble finding your tuning for 'Save It for Later'." A superb endorsement for The English Beat, who grew up inspired by The Who and Floyd.

Review: When this was recorded at the Record Plant, San Francisco on 1December 15, 1974, Fleetwood Mac were in a state of flux. They were led by singer-songwriters Bob Welch and Christine McVie, but Welch was poised to leave and be replaced by Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Welch's stint in the band was brief and the five studio albums he's on are overlooked compared with their imperial phase that was on its way with the next line-up, but he's not to be slept on. The band were laid back but grittier with him in it. He's a slick, cool singer and a mind-blowing guitarist. This live set, which spans early classics and more recent favourites, makes it plain to see just how good he was.
