Review: Continuing the journey from her debut, Yoshiko Sai deepens the surreal, spiritual exploration first introduced in her earlier work. Once again collaborating with arranger Yuji Ohno, she crafts an eerie, introspective atmosphere that blends poetic imagery with hauntingly beautiful music. At just 24, the Japanese artist was already an accomplished poet, painter, and singer, with this release showcasing her ability to conjure vivid, dream-like landscapes. Tracks like ‘Gitano’ and ‘Alhambra No Aoi Bin’ feature delicate arrangements that swirl around Sai’s ethereal vocals, evoking a world of mystery and intrigue. The music moves through a range of emotions, from the quiet contemplation in ‘Umi No Chinmoku’ to the emotional depth of ‘Taiji No Yume,’ reflecting her spiritual journey. The reissue, pressed on transparent clear vinyl, mirrors the fragile, almost ethereal nature of the themes within the work, adding a tactile layer of meaning to its haunting melodies. Sai’s unique blend of folk, art and poetry continues to captivate, offering an experience that is as introspective as it is sonically rich.

Review: Long coveted by collectors and now available internationally for the first time, Yoshiko Sai’s 1975 album Mangekyou finds the Japanese singer-songwriter at the height of her powers. Produced by the legendary Yuji Ohno, known for his work across jazz and film scores, the album weaves a dense tapestry of lush arrangements and vibrant textures. Ohno’s instrumental backdrops—from funky jazz infusions to breezy, cinematic soundscapes—allow Sai’s crystal-clear voice to take centre stage, moving seamlessly between ethereal folk, dramatic chanson, and soft psych. Tracks like ‘Yoru No Sei’ and ‘Oumagatoki’ embody a surreal, haunting quality, as Sai’s voice drifts through verses like a ghostly narrator, while the backing shifts between lighthearted jazz and wistful strings. The album’s variety ensures that every track offers something new, whether it’s the melancholy depth of ‘Akai Hana’ or the playfully strange ‘Eidore Shibai’. Mangekyou feels simultaneously timeless and ahead of its time, a work that exists between genres, places, and moods. The arrangements feel light on their feet but heavy with emotion. Long buried in obscurity, this reissue frames Sai’s vision not as esoterica, but as quietly revelatory.

Review: Two powerhouse techno producers join forces on this thrilling six-track release, forging a unique sonic identity that blends alien sound design with deep rhythmic control. Opener 'AGNCY' sets it off with a broken beat structure and eerie, extraterrestrial textures. It’s a fractured, glitchy techno cut that sounds like a signal intercepted from deep space. Unpredictable and captivating. 'BNKR follows with a brooding pulse; it’s dark, haunted techno that creeps forward with tension. The groove is thick with atmosphere, like walking through a derelict industrial complex at night. Flip the record and 'GLSSDGGR' injects sharp electro energy into the mix. Buzzing with nimble synth work and punchy percussive hits, it adds a dose of movement and variety without breaking the cohesive mood. Closer 'TRBMB' is also a highlight. It is a slow-burning epic, steadily layering power and pressure into a dramatic, late-night climax. Together, the six tracks form a versatile, forward-thinking techno record that balances experimentation with dancefloor functionality.

Review:
New York outfit The Budos Band return with their first full-length release on Diamond West, the new label founded by band members Tom Brenneck and Jared Tankel. VII was produced by Brenneck and engineered by Simon Guzmán and has plenty of their signature taut, groove-driven tracks that blend Afro-soul, doom rock and '70s psychedelia. They were all recorded in California and feature the percussionist Rich Tarrana, who adds his own fresh texture without detracting from the raw, hypnotic MO of the band. As usual, this is music that is equal parts cinematic and visceral and is perfect for nocturnal drives and deep immersion. Now more than two decades in, The Budos Band are still able to surprise and compel.

Review: German progressive rockers Everon have returned after 16 years, led as ever by guitarist and vocalist Oliver Philipps. Known for their intricate melodies and deft fusion of classic prog rock with a modern sensibility, the band's latest offering showcases their signature sound that made them stand out in the late 90s and early 2000s. Despite the years apart, the group's musical chemistry remains intact, with their technical prowess and Philipps' emotive voice providing a solid foundation. However, this reunion comes with a heavy heart as recording process was marred by the sudden death of drummer and co-founder Christian Moos. The poignant 'Until We Meet Again' serves as a tribute with lyrics reflecting the sorrow of losing a close bandmate. Tracks like 'Travels' and 'Broken Angels' continue to embody Everon's knack for melodic rock with progressive flourishes, while 'Pinocchio's Nose' and 'Guilty As Charged' show their ability to mix heavier, more complex arrangements with accessibility. The band's blend of the epic and personal, coupled with their finely tuned musicianship, makes this a compelling return after such a long hiatus.

Review: Hailing from South London, Patrick Wolf's seventh album unfurls with the sound of wind buffeting coastal cliffs and gently recedes with a hymn to the sea fog. The intervening tracks chart a course through grief, folklore, and ritual, woven with strings, synthesisers, and a vocal timbre that carries the weight of experience. Marking his return with his first full-length in over a decade, Wolf delves into the traditions of East Kent and the pagan Wheel of the Year. He conjures a landscape steeped in liminality, harvest, and mortality, resonating with both personal loss and ancient myth. ‘Dies Irae’, featuring the poignant vocals of his sister Jo Apps, centres on their mother's passing with devastating clarity, while ‘Limbo’ (with Zola Jesus) transitions into a stormy, cinematic realm. ‘The Curfew Bell’ echoes his earlier chamber-pop sensibilities, now imbued with a newfound restraint, while ‘Lughnasa’ (featuring Serafina Steer) and ‘Song Of The Scythe’ tap into deeper, more elemental undercurrents. Across all thirteen tracks, Wolf navigates confidently between orchestral grandeur and stark minimalism, seamlessly blending field recordings with folk revival elements. The result is a record that feels simultaneously ancient and futuristic—as if unearthed from the soil, blessed by the moon and cast out to sea. This album stands as his most conceptually vivid work to date, and perhaps, most profoundly, his most human.

Review: Talisman were a Swedish metal band founded in 1989 by bassist Marcel Jacob, whose charismatic core formed the basis of a melodic, urgent sound. Beset by tragedies in the late noughts - Jacob's health issues and suicide, and the band's eventual split - their various LPs have garnered much credo over the years and especially posthumously to Jacob's death. Genesis and Five Out Of Five all are the fan favourites, but it's their debut self-titled record from 1989 which cut an early mustard, with the arresting lead single 'I'll Be Waiting' wrenching the attentions of hard rock fans worldwide away, god forbid, from lesser acts. What's more, this anniversary edition from original pressers Sunhill includes two previously unreleased instrumental tracks, further marking out the anniversary brilliance of a tragic act.

Review: The final Soul Media recording marks a shift from 70s jazz-rock towards something richer, more refined — less about force, more about feel. Jiro Inagaki’s soundworld here is open-ended but precise, framed by Norio Maeda’s meticulous arrangements and a studio band that breathes through every turn. ‘Memory Lane’ is as mellow as its name implies, full of soft brass swells and swirling keys that hint at nostalgia without sinking into it. ‘I Will Give You Samba’ offers contrast — sharp-edged, quick-stepping and filled with rhythmic crosscurrents, while ‘Take My Hand’ struts with effortless cool, its groove compact but expressive. The palette is wide, from ballads like ‘Dried Flowers’ to the cinematic sweep of ‘Double Images’, all held together by a sense of elegant restraint. Everything is placed just so — from Eri Ohno’s gliding vocals to Tadayuki Harada’s moody baritone — but nothing feels stiff. This isn’t fusion in the usual sense: it’s more like the closing of one chapter, the opening of another, and a deliberate nod to a musical future Inagaki seemed to sense coming. Still vivid, still fresh, and far more than just a footnote in Japanese jazz history.

Review: Swedish trio Death And Vanilla continue to carve out their atmospheric niche, blending elements of post-ambient electronica and spectral folk to craft something distinctly unsettling. Their latest foray into live scoring breathes new life into the eerie, folkloric narrative of a 1968 ghost story. As they shift seamlessly between stuttering tape loops, minimalist drum machines, and haunting choral effects, they create a tension that pulls the listener deeper into the supernatural. Tracks like ‘Supernatural Breakfast’ are pulsing with an old-school, Carpenter-esque vibe, while others, like ‘Nightmares’, evoke a sense of unease with their swirling winds and spectral sounds. The band's ability to inhabit these otherworldly spaces is a nod to their growing mastery of atmosphere, a skill that’s increasingly becoming their signature. Even as they explore the boundary between the familiar and the uncanny, Death And Vanilla remind us that their sound can be as inviting as it is unnervingly strange.

Review: Finally, Yoshiko Sai's celebrated career hears and sees a comprehensive LP repress campaign, with each star discus in her catalogue now lent a limited edition coloured vinyl edition. A key figure in Japan's folk and psychedelic scenes, Sai's mixture of cantastoria (story-singing) and ethereal instrumentation have infatuated listeners for decades. Mikkou explores themes of stowaways and distant travels, immersing the listener in an exotic, Silk Road-inspired fantasy; we tread an exotic trade route, changing hands through sleepless, arid nights of longing vocals and darkened funk (just take in those drum unisons on 'Haru', setting a precedent for impeccable productions throughout).

Review: Keith Roth's first solo outing, recorded after decades fronting Frankenstein 3000 and more recently joining The Dictators, plays like a dense tour through the past 50 years of American rock while still nodding to the present. Born in the Bronx and raised in New Jersey, Roth's deep roots in the scene come through clearlyihis radio-hardened rasp moves from bruised glam on 'She Says Good Morning' to driving alt-rock on 'Go Away', while 'What It Means' and 'Children of Men' lean into a bleaker, grunge-adjacent palette. 'Cosmic Scene' and 'Strawman' benefit from features by Albert Bouchard and Ross the Boss, adding a smoky supergroup sheen. 'I Don't Feel Like Thinking Today!' sets the tone with defiant slacker energy, while closer 'I'll Get By' opens out into a kind of worn optimism. It's scuffed and emotionally raw, but grounded by Roth's unwavering voice and instinct for melodyiproof that, even after decades on the airwaves, he still has something new to say.

Review: Tanika Charles has long paired throwback soul with incisive songwriting, but this latest release feels especially raw. Now four albums deep, the Toronto-based artist pivots inward—trading the usual tales of romance and heartbreak for something more fragile: the fallout of early family trauma. ‘Don’t Like You Anymore’ and ‘No More’ snap with funk-driven defiance, but it’s the quieter moments that linger. ‘The Lament’ and ‘Talk To Me Nice’ lean into vulnerability, while ‘Win’, a duet with Quebec’s Clerel, glows with understated uplift. Charles leads a tight team—Scott McCannell, Kyla Charter, and Chino de Villa shape the grooves; Monophonics’ Kelly Finnigan adds the rougher edge—but the clarity here is hers. Her voice, resolute yet tender, is unafraid to ask difficult questions and even braver in leaving them unanswered. There’s growth in every chord, as the arrangements span lilting r&b, classic soul, and easy-stepping slow jams. From Polaris nods to JUNO nominations, Charles has long commanded her place—but this is something more personal, more courageous. Soul music as a form of release, not just rhythm.

Review: On his latest album, Denver, Colorado musician and self-styled "former USAF baby-catching medic turned hippie abstract sound bath architect" Patrick R. Park enrols in the Berlin school, breaking from his premiership of the wondrous Ethereal Mother Tapes to lock down a decadal, decadent LP's worth of cosmic-not-cosmic loops. Echoing post-punk and glam-synth of the kind that might soundtrack a Stranger Things spinoff - but more maximal, glued together with the Pritt-stick of soft-clipped compression - the likes of 'Terror', 'Quantized' and 'Paramount' pin down the floating pappuses of true crime docu-music, platform video games with their pitchy arpeggios, and coulombs of dungeon-crawling aeration, the latter motif especially repeated on near-closer 'Zenith'. Use this record to soundtrack your next trek through Shadow Labyrinth, Evergrace or Wizardry 5.

Review: Producer and guitarist Yutaka Hirasaka enjoyed a peaceful career pitstop with Breath, one of many to top up the beatsmith and cassette artist's now towering discography, and which now comes released on vinyl for the first time. Hirasaka's approach to music covers ambient, beat-driven landscapes, a format which has led him both to immersive live performance work and commercial ends. The homely aesthetic of Hirasaka's sound is heard once more on the wordless, texturally unperturbed Breath, which clears our airways far better than any shop-bought nostrum ever could, be it via the deconstructed guitar pan-plays of 'Orion' or the marzipan piano maunders of 'Amaretto'.

Review: Recorded at Portland's Type Foundry studio i where American instrumental experimental rockers Grails' earliest records were born i Miracle Music is the band's 12th long player and weaves acoustic and electric guitars, synths, brass, woodwinds, percussion and samples into an expansive, cinematic tapestry. Drawing from early industrial textures, classical elegance and psychedelic ambiance, the album crafts a heavy yet ethereal mood. Tracks like 'Silver Bells' pulse with vintage electro urgency, while others invoke a sense of reflection and grandeur. This balance of boundary-pushing intensity and airy melodicism reflects Grails' quarter-century commitment to reinvention. As both a nod to their origins and a bold step forward, Miracle Music stands as one of Grails' most personal and profound releases i a key to their ability to transform eclectic influences into something singular and deeply moving.

After impressing with his reimagining of Hieroglyphics' Casual's work, Perry now leans fully into his signature shadowy style and has said he was inspired by a Civil War phenomenon where sound vanishes due to geography for this work. The album’s title reflects Perry’s low-profile, graffiti-rooted ethos and the tunes feature a stacked lineup with Casual, Planet Asia, Ill Bill, Estee Nack and more all involved on a project that dives into murky sonic terrain. Standout track 'Call Me Snake' evokes John Carpenter and inspired P-Dirt’s concept lyrics. A brilliant return.

Review: Epic, catchy choruses, scintillating blues rock solos and a self-confident frontman that will have likely had Alan McGee champing at the bit to sign to Creation back in the 90s - The Sherlocks hit all the right notes. The South Yorkshire four-piece indie rock n' rollers have stuck to their guns with guitar-based rock music and ignored the keyboard craze to craft face-melting anthems and earned them a loyal fanbase along the way. Their new album comes out on their own label Teddyboy Records and the band will be looking to outdo themselves by securing their first ever number one spot in the charts when this comes out. To their credit, they have every chance with their rabble-rousing tunes sounding more expansive and ambitious than ever before. Long may this ever-rising four-piece fly the flag for guitar music.

Review: The Freedom Affair’s second album lives in the sound of Southern soul. Recorded in four whirlwind days at Memphis’ Royal Studios, the Missouri-based band doubles down on grit and grace, bringing their KC-honed fire into the same space that birthed Al Green’s classics. Opening with ‘With You’, the trio of Paula Saunders, Seyko Groves and Shon Ruffin set the tone: unflinching, full-bodied vocal leads that carry across simmering arrangements. ‘Picking Up The Pieces’ and ‘Tell Me I’ll Be Yours’ offer different shades of heartache and healing, while ‘The Water’ and ‘Don’t You Wanna Love Me’ show off the band's dynamic range — from sweeping gospel tones to raw, handclap-heavy funk. Horn section veterans Brett Jackson and Pete Carroll deliver tight, melodic lines in a single take, winding through a rhythm section made even more cohesive by Chris Hazelton’s switch to Hammond B3. ‘Be Who You Are’ and ‘Anchor’ feel like declarations of purpose, soulful and sure-footed, while the closer ‘Coming Home’ brings it all back to love — and to Royal’s vintage tape warmth. Not just revivalist, but reverent and radiant, this is Southern soul with new stories to tell.

Review: Julius Smack collaborated with a fictional AI assistant to create the new album which explores his origins. It is set in a near-future Earth where artists and AI share a symbiotic bond and aims to reflect a world where beauty and violence intertwine. Artists are the last human survivors in this place and they mine their memories and dreams with AI in order to generate art which sustains them but also produces toxins that must be expelled with each new creation. Starlight then is an album which challenges AI's role in creativity and labour, and blurs the lines between art and reality, all while giving rise to a thoughtful and immersive album of innovative ambient.

Review: Portraits GRM offer a split release between Beatrice Dillon and Hideki Umezawa, riffing on 'basho' and Baschet respectively. Dillon's 'Basho' is shaped on the mortar of a Japanese philosophical concept: conceived by Japanese philosopher Kitaro Nishida, basho describes a post-physical plane in which experiences and thoughts interconnect, dissolving subject-object distinctions. Dillon and Umezawa's music both resist fixity, reactivating the listener's attention by way electronic sounds stripped of origin. Umezawa's 'Still Forms', however, contrasts Dillon's firm-footed techno curtails with an entirely beatless piece, exploring the sonic potential of Baschet sound structures: experimental instruments developed in the 1950s by Bernard and Francois Baschet. Electroacoustic cognitions branch out like newly grown synapses on this fresh 12".

Review: Described as "the bastard child of a Ramones/Strokes one night stand", London's Bad Nerves take the early 60s rock n' roll power pop that birthed the later punk scenes and bend them into an ouroboros of tail-eating, hook-laden punk rock swagger. Following on from their 2020 self-titled debut full-length, their aptly titled sophomore effort ("that was never meant to exist") Still Nervous arrived in 2024 armed to the teeth with fuzzier riffs, bigger hooks, more breakneck pace and an endorsement from Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong. Boasting cuts such as the mega anthem 'You've Got The Nerve', this is as to-the-point, unpretentious and garage-punk as it gets.

Review: There isn't much info out there about this new and super limited ambient excursion from Mystery Circles, which leaves us only with the music. It's a charming and organic world of sound with lingering trumpet notes stretched out to infinity over textural motifs and sustained chords that are both melancholic and tinged with danger. Sometimes it's abstract sound design like on 'Glass & Steel' that gets the attention, at others more sweeping and traditional ambient like on 'Sounds From Light, Still In Darkness', but either way, this one is seriously arresting.

Review: Canadian-born, German-based producer Ash Luk is best known for his work in Minimal Violence, a band that used electronics to create raucous, vivid punk-rock style live experiences, as well as his role as one half of 'doom electronic' duo S.A.T.I.N. alongside Ireen Amnes. Under the Infinity Division moniker he's created more impressively dystopian sonic adventures that channel a suitably wide array of extreme music styles, from isolationist ambience at the start of 'No Reason' - which then twists into industrial junglist madness - to breakbeaty Sisters of Mercy-style coldwave on 'Weather Prophets'. Fans of Alec Empire's notorious Digital Hardcore Recordings label and its output should find this entertainingly terrifying and twisted up musical vision very much up their street.

Review: Mexico City based "street jazz" maestro Soni Orbita are on a spiritual quest in sound. Jazz is what they use to communicate messages of love and freedom, and this new album for Departamento does just that across 8 magnificent new tracks. They are brilliantly complex in their arrangements but also hugely accessible thanks to their universal grooves and emotions. Elements of house, funk and disco all feature with piano anchoring each piece. The result is a deeply personal and meditative body of work that invites introspection while moving the body and soul with endlessly rich harmonies. This is bold, brilliant jazz for anyone seeking a path to higher consciousness.
