Review: DJ/producer Philip Lauer from Frankfurt has teamed up with Berlin vocalist Dena to create a modern take on Julie Stapleton's soulful house classic, containing multiple versions. Lauer's Hotel Lauer EP on Especial in 2016 cemented his position in the scene, with albums for Permanent Vacation and Running Back. Dena, born in Bulgaria and raised in Berlin, has released electronic dance-pop stylings on Kitsune Music and K7. The EP features a Club Mix, a Demo Mix, a deep tech remix by DJ Slyngshot, and a drifting Balearic version for late summer nights and dawn.

'King OTN' is a jack dup acid cut ripped with cosmic synth details and 'DX Metero' has sheet metal synths lashing about next to ethereal synths and busted drum breaks. 'Starfather' is a star-facing closer with elegant piano notes dancing over serene grooves. A vital showcase of this essential live artist.

Spectacular's 'Big Bold & Brave' opens up with raw, guttural vocals over mid-tempo digi-dub rhythms. Bulby Yorke's 'Big, Bold Dub' stirs it back to a more low-end heavy roller but the bright melodies remain. Review: RBCHMBRS pushes his MPC - if that is the tool he used for this - to the max with a heavy mix of ramshackle loops, samples, busted drums and wonky rhythms on this great new EP for 1432 R US. It is steeped in hip-hop style for the way the grooves are so loosely assembled, but with a more rooted four-four house vibe. 'OD' is a deep and dusty opener for the back room, 'Eloise' brings hi tek funk and intense soul with Motor City overtones and 'Toe The Line' is a humid deep house cut that Theo Parrish or Moodymann might admire. 'Take Me' rounds out with twanging bass riffs and smeared chords that ooze heartfelt warmth.

Review: 1432 R US could as well be called Tech R US in a nod to the great toy shop as it is known as one of the key labels in the sub-genre. Sami is the artist behind this latest slab having previously appeared on the likes of Random Mind State and World Building. He gets mad busy on the opener, with wires synths, bleeping machines, smeared dub chords and jostling drums all layered up to competing rhythmic effect. 'Way Up' has a darker vibe with heavier drums and more edgy synths. 'Twin' is a percussive jumble that is loose but will lock you in with its freaky vocals and 'Deep Blue' is a stripped-back and more serene deep tech trip that encourages daydreaming.

Review: To date, Kim Cosmk has generally done her own thing - self-releasing a string of digital-only singles and albums which variously mix and mangle elements of electro, IDM, techno and dubstep. Here she pops up on an established label - Ralph Lawson's 2020 Vision to be exact - for the very first time. First, she whips up a frenzy courtesy of the fuzzy and aggressive riffs of techno roller 'Night Flight', complete with creepy chords and foreboding motifs. She then delivers raw, heavy, industrial-fired electro on 'Ore', whilst warped dubstep and electro are brilliantly mixed on 'Nocturnal'. To round things up nicely, 'Drifting' is a partial vocal number built around a wobbling dubstep bass with punchy electro drums and twinkling pianos.

Review: Lloyd Stellar was not really a man gifted an extraordinary name when he was born. Rather, it is the chosen alias for Dutch dude Erik Griffoen, but he's surely made the name his own with a rapid rise in the number of releases of his music so far this year. Now Stellar gets has mitts on 20/20 Vision alongside The Droid, aka Ben Evans. In line with the label's exploration of electro over the past few years, this is hi-tech machine funk through and through, with twitchy synth lines and brittle, crisp drum machine patterns programmed within an inch of their lives. Maintaining a steely, dystopian mood throughout, this is serious electro for the heads, executed with precision and flair.

It is Snad who gets the gig and he is a house producer from Berlin making big waves right now. This one follows outings on Chicago's Kimochi Records, Chez Damier's Courtesy of Balance and the Dungeon Meat label and is another raw, stripped-back offering of tough house. 'Bootlickerz' is a bristling cut ready for the peak time, 'Goobernatorial Candidacy' has a more stripped-back but just as compelling groove and 'Per Savour' goes deep into late-night goodness before closer 'Butt Heads' picks up the pace once more.

Review: Claus Voigtmann's Life Miles LP was another fine bit of work from the London-based German, and now two of the singles from it get served up on a new 12" next to remixes from a pair of tasteful underground producers. First up is LA-based Liquid Earth who brings some low-end wonk to 'North Of The Sun' next to acid-soaked grooves and driving 909s. The original pumps a bit harder with a Leftfield cosmic edge. Then comes Youandewan on the flip. He twists 'Lowrider' into a murky and late-night dub cut with warped bass and a signature sense of crispy tech funk. The original is a more high-speed and silky, electro-inspired space cruise with lovely broken beats.

Review: B.Love is next up on Leeds legend Ralph Lawson's 20/20 label having come to his attention on Record Store Day 2024 with his Music Dance Experience EP and then later that day when playing as a resident at the Bizarre Trax party Lawson was en route to play. Review: LA-based band ASHRR picked up plenty of new fans with their recent Sunshine Low album and now they're back with the sixth single from it and it comes with some seriously heavyweight names on the remix. Chicago house pioneer Ron Trent does his thing to 'Please Don't Stop The Rain' by going super deep, spine tingling and heady with some lush arps and distant guitar twangs adding a Balearic feel. Dub treatments come from the Prescription boss himself, while ASHRR's alter ego, ASHRR Soundsystem, offer up an instrumental and a remix that lay down dubby house drums and lush chord work. This one keeps the summer vibes going well into winter.

Review: Ralph Lawson's legendary Leeds-based label 20/20 Vision is in the middle of celebrating 30 years in the game. Part of that now extends to this reissue of a record that played a huge part in establishing the imprint back in the day. It comes from the co-founders' production alias Wolf n Flow and though it was recorded more than 20 years ago, this record still bangs. 'Messin' With My Mind' is a perfect mix of squelchy tech and vocal loveliness that calls to mind early Fresh & Low. Review: Carl Finlow has been turning out killer electro since forever and is the man behind the revered Random Factor alias. He started it back in 1994 and since he's brought us four full lengths on 20/20 Vision, with a new one dropping very soon. In the meantime, here's a reissue of one of his most in demand classic EPs that's back on wax after initially making waves way back in 2000. The cuts draw on electro-pop and lithe future disco a la Metro Area, from the sparkly 80s-vibed opener 'Old News', 'Richochet' - imagine dub techno rerouted through guitar-led funk - to the more heads down, deep and moody dancefloor delight 'Update' and the indelible melodies of closer 'Swing'. Review: Falko Brocksieper is a cult German minimalist who was favoured by the likes of Craig Richards and his Tyrant project. This new EP from 20/20 Vision takes a deep dive into his back catalogue to unearth a gem that first arrived via Treibstoff Recordings almost 20 years ago in 2006. 'Frantic Formula' is a nice liquid cut with wispy sci-fi pads and rolling grooves for early evening warm-ups, while 'Outrun' gets more upright with its jumbled drum loops and gurgling bass. 'Covert Action' is another masterfully languid and elastic rhythm that layers up cowbells, wobbly low ends and silky loops that soon lock you into the groove. A welcome remaster and reissue for sure.

Review: It would seem we're back on the Christmas card list... 2000 Black supergroup comprising the likes of Dego, Mensah and original Bugz members Lord and Tatham have been slowly ramping up their releases again and this year has seen their largest output yet. Following "Two Way Here One Way Go", "Simmering" proffers three more sublime and silky instrumentals from deeply decorated foursome. And the new school talent doesn't disappoint with a selection of truly deep house sounds in a couple of different styles. The first is all bottomless depths, dreamy moods and escapist pads that are unhurried and mediative. Review: With its fractal-sporting artwork, psychedelic electronics, bold melodies and thrusting grooves, France's 39 label feels like it is rooted in another, earlier time - one where progressive house, trance and techno were still evolving. This collaborative EP from Wigs and Body Clinic fits neatly in its catalogue. They begin with 'Into The Void', a spiralling slab of uplifting 90s progressive house/trance fusion, before unveiling 'Lost Souls', where spacey headiness rubs shoulders with thunderous beats, restless bass and trippy TB-303 motifs. They plump for a darker and more intense, acid-fired techno sound on 'Tuna Bap, while 'NK Prog' sounds like a long-lost progressive house gem from 1995 (bonus points awarded for their use of MK style organ stabs).

Review: Following a fundraising event in Leeds, 3AM Recordings have released this limited 100-copy 12" sampler as a not-for-profit project, with proceeds being split equally between Help Ukraine Center and the ActionAid Ukraine Appeal. Auto Sound City's 'L-XXVII.313' is deep house at its percussive best, a vintage-sounding drum machine intricately programmed to fire on all cylinders. Review: Dutch jungle connoisseur Coco Brice has mastered just about every style and sub style over the years. He has a meticulous sound that makes every sound pristine and fully deserving of its place in the mix. The a-side on his new one for 3am Eternal is a mix of brutal, physical drum work and heavenly melody that tugs you in two directions at once on 'Cloud Busting.' It's epic, meaningful and unmissable. On the reverse, thongs are a little more stripped back and a more rolling break tumbles endlessly towards. Review: Having first appeared on the monumental Techno 2: The Next Generation compilation in 1990, Octave One swiftly set out their sound to become the Detroit techno icons they currently are with the Octivation EP for 430 West. The rest they say is history. Given the reissue clamour of anything related to the birth of Detroit techno, it's quite strange that the record hasn't been licensed for an official new edition in the ensuing two decades or so, until now that is! Presented here in it's promo edition, you get a chance to here "Sonic Fusion", a track that never officially came out and was replaced by "There and Beyond". Any self respecting Detroit techno fan will know "Nicolette" and "Paradise" and anyone interested in increasing their knowledge of the genre should consider a must have!

Review: Given that legendary London DJ Steve Bicknell was one of the earliest champions of "proper techno" in the UK, it's been heartening to see his recent renaissance. Renewed interest in his 1990 productions has allowed him to issue a string of previously unheard gems from the vaults. Awakening The Past takes this approach, too, serving up a trio of previously unreleased gems from 1998 - the wonderfully trippy, late night techno loop jam "Physical Life", ragged acid workout "Natural Vibrations" and even more psychedelic "Fearing The Mind's Fears" - and a cut recorded earlier this year in Berlin. Interestingly, the latter - an intense, bleeping, modular-sounding slammer entitled "Conscious Awakening" - sounds like it could have been recovered from the same dusty DAT as the other tracks, despite being 100% new.

Review: A melting pot of UK garage, house and bass, DJ Swagger's latest release on Berlin-based label, 777, is a fascinating exploration in structure and chaos. Opening track, 'Thanks Felix', moves at lightspeed - a thrilling race through a gritty arrangement of blunted kicks, shifting in and out of focus, moving between order and disorder. 'Fingerclut' emerges with an instantly more house-facing feel - a satisfyingly hypnotic groove spirals in a circle motion, featuring a cyclonic gathering of subtle flecks of percussive variation over the course of the track. Offering a spliced, glitched-out take on contemporary bass, 'Final Bout' journeys through moments of airy weightlessness before being thrown back into the growling, driving bass section of the track. The perfect tension builder, 'Full Cycle', is an ingenious tease of a track, skillfully building up to, you guessed it, even more build.

Review: DJ Disrespect again shows no regard for the rules of electronic music on this new and visceral outing on 777. It is a 12" he dedicates to "some of the feelings associated with the tribulations of mental issues" and that's reflected in the sounds which are dense and full of duality - drums going one way, coarse synth textures and percussion puling in another direction. On 'Energy Rush' screeching synths tear through the middle of the high tempo techno drums and 'Focus' is a compelling and parboil linear banger. If his mission is to unite people and offer comfort and community with his music, DJ Disrespect has succeeded here.

Review: The very first live stream on 9128.live broadcast from the studio of Rafael Anton Irisarri, as he and Thomas Meluch (Benoit Pioulard) pieced together a completely live improvisation, christening the newly created 9128 airwaves and setting the bar for many more live takeovers. With one album between them as Gailes, and profound work individually (also together as Orcas), Rafael and Thomas are masters of the ambient craft, combining intricate field recordings, guitar, pedals, vocals and heady reverb across a 40-minute non-stop immersive listen, split into two 20-minute sides for the inaugural 9128 vinyl release. The 9128 label aims to document significant live performances by artists that previously performed on the 9128.live platform. With recordings initially created for a singular collective listening moment, and often as part of a festival or takeover weekend, label recordings will re-present this music for further listening across various formats that best suit each release. Gailes - Session Two, will be available as a digital download and 12", printed in a reverse-board die-cut sleeve, black vinyl.

Review: Batu and Nick Leon united for this surprise release late last year and it now arrives on lovely vinyl where it sounds sublime. The four-track EP blends Latin and UK club influences with a psychedelic twist on Batu's label, A Long Strange Dream which, since its 2023 launch, has gained recognition for pushing experimental club sounds of the highest order. 'Rezz' kicks off with shuffling tight percussive rhythms and 'Yiu' is more intense in its high-fidelity loops. Review: There's naturally much to enjoy on the latest volume in Africa Seven's A7 Edits series, which pairs original - and usually obscure - old Afro-disco and Afro-boogie gems with fresh 21st century edits. This time round, the A-side is all about Kemayo & K System's piano and horn-heavy disco-funk jam 'Biram', a two-minute blast of dancefloor exuberance that Phillip Lauer cleverly re-imagines as loopy, locked-in chunk of Afro-disco/disco house fusion. Over on the flip there's a chance to savour Afro National's heavy, low-slung stomper 'Push Forward', a cut that brilliantly adds chanted vocals and Hendrix style guitar solos to a sweaty, non-stop groove. Al Zanders does a great job in ratcheting up the tension and heaviness on his accompanying club-ready extension.

Review: Brazilian talent Rafael Cancian has grown in stature thanks to solid outings on the tasteful likes of Razor-N-Tape and Hot Pot Records. Now with that profile established, he heads out with a new label of his own in the form of About Disco. He inaugurates it with a quartet of edits that he has already been deploying to great effect on various dancefloors around the world. 'Sounds Chicago' does indeed with raw drums and great keys dancing over the beats. 'Ti Amo' has a more funky undercarriage and disco percussion, 'D'Afrique' again brings a funky bass riff to the fore with some psyched-out sounds for company and 'Opera' shuts down with some late-night and soul-drenched synths over intimate and stripped back house drums.

Review: Three slices of unashamedly old skool (two) stepping action from the Above Sound label and TwoStep2 aka DJ Relay and Jo Public, that'll transport you back to the Sunday scene and UKG's earliest days. On this EP's lead track 'Give Me Some Of That' the duo perfectly catch that intersection between rave elements - the wispy, eerie synths and pitch shifted vocals - and the sophisticated shuffle of American garage. 'Drop The Bass (2022 Remaster)' leans slightly more towards the hardcore flavour, its choppier beats more evocative of the inspired syncopations of breakstep, while 'What's Gonna Happen' is the trippiest and most optimistic sounding of the three while still packing plenty of rhythmic punch.

Review: TwoStep2 aka DJ Relay and Jo Public have been known for their superlative but distinctly old skool sounds, but lead track on this three cut 12" is rather a subtle departure. The beat is a little more wonderfully wonky than you might expect and the bassline bigger and more adventurous, with pleasingly original results. 'Starlight' plays off its abrasive backspins with fluttering harps that are more Luke Vibert than Sticky or Noodles, true genius, and a bubbling beat to boot. 'Weapon of Choice' plunders ravier elements but again, it's no museum piece with its off kilter piano and slowed down, drowsy atmospherics. If you're looking for memorable tunes that stick out rather than fit in, make this your destination.

She emerged on a whirlwind a few years ago and has solidified her reputation with electrifying sets that traverse the bass, acid, IDM, rave and techno spectrum with style and captivating energy. Now she once again shows off her production chops with this new EP on her own new label absorb emit. It is the inaugural outing and sets out the sonic stall superbly - 'Cordyceps Disco' is frosty and thumping techno, 'Practice Of Menace' has a more minimal design but no lesser impact, 'Irregularity' rides on busted rhythms with well-swung hits and 'All At Once' is a nice 5am wig out for the late night hours and headier moments. A fine debut.
