Cat: 2529 001. Rel: 10 Apr 07
Review: As a member of the legendary Flipmode Squad, Rah Digga's rap is bouncing off the walls on this cover of the Marvin Gaye classic "Sexual Healing". It takes the song to a whole new level! The remix is already causing proper dancefloor damage around the globe by all major players on the circuit.

Set U Free (feat Bobbi De Pasois)
Rockin' You Eternally (feat Roy Ayers)
Riff To The Rhodes
B Line
Review: "Set U Free" is a nice nu soul/r&b female stepper, with Bobbi's great vocals and instant DJ appeal. "Rockin You Eternally" is an epic modern, nu soul smash that's gonna cause the quiet storm, with exclusive appearances from Roy Ayers who takes the tune to new levels with his trademark vital vibes and Woody Cunningham singing super soul vocals. "Riff To The Rhodes" is a fat soul instrumental, with catchy horns and electric piano, a pure dancefloor friendly rare groover. "B-line" spills some funky space soul for the feet and the head. Hypnotic cosmic deep soulfulness for all you rekkid lovers out there.

At The Disco
Latin Freak
Playin Your Game
Review: Kay-Dee brings back to life an incredible band from Buffalo, New York, by the name of the 7 Miles Per Hour Band. 'At The Disco' is the lead instalment on this release; with sharp horns, fantastic vocals and not to mention the dancefloor presence this track has, it is no wonder why it has been given brand new life in 2006. 'Playing Your Game' offers more of a message of love, but still keeps a modern soul feel with its guitar back drop and uplifting vocals. Kay-Dee wraps up this release on the B-Side with the bass driven cut by the name of 'Latin Freak'. The drum work and horn arrangement makes 'Latin Freak' a must have for Funk and Soul advocates.

A non stop groove! On the B side, there's a longer version of the classic Sly Stone "Family Affair" and a re-cut of "Right Place Wrong Time" by Dr. John. Enjoy the funk and the versions of these fantastic groovy tunes. Extended pleasure and fatter sounds!

Keep It Together (Jam 5) (3:42)
Down & Dirty (Jam 2) (5:40)
Feel No Fear (Jam 1) (5:21)
Review: Soon to be followed by two more from the mighty Ratio - ACR:EPC and ACR:EPR - EPA is the opening chapter in a triptych born from nothing. Or at least no fixed plan or specific agenda. A day spent jamming in the studio with close friend of the band and regular vocal collaborator, Denise Johnson, the recordings here and on the pair still to come represent the work they did that day, shortly before the world lost the woman in question forever.

Passing away in July 2020, well before her time, this is ACR paying tribute to another integral part of the Manchester music Factory. From the hypnotic and woozy 'Wonderland', where Donna Summer meets acid jazz, to the more straight-laced disco material - delivered with an edge you'd expect in terms of instrumentation and vocals - EPA is a fitting way to honour her legacy.

Rockit Music (acappella tools mix)
Review: Number 5 in the series of great re-edited and reworked versions of classics from the past. Here you get two massive club tunes that will destroy any dancefloor. The A-side holds an afro disco re-edit of the end groove of "California Style" Al's edit is totally different from the original track. Extended for maximum dancefloor pleasure. The B-side is a Ripp complete rework of "Body & Soul" re-timed and re-programmed with a soft kick drum. Originally sampled by UR for "Night Of The Jaguar" this is a killer dancefloor tune for groovy or moody clubs! Also check the Rockit Music cover mix - using the drums from Earth People "Dance" with pads from Bobby Konders "The Poem" and a snippet from Q-Tip to keep the vibe flowing. Strictly for the old school heads!

Don't Give Up (dub mix) (9:47)
Review: Adelle First luckily came up in the late '80s to early '90s tradition of cut-up house. 'Don't Give Up' is her defining moment; a precious South African disco piece that is unusually sensitive and detailed in disposition, and which features a brilliant dub mix on the B, that shows off every production aspect of this tried but true style with a startling sense of intricacy. First released in 1986, the flair of producer Tom Mkhize together with First's lolling vocals is once more put on display on this 2022 reissue.

LA Nights (extended version - previously unreleased) (5:29)
But Beautiful (4:28)
New Yor Afternoon (3:01)
Review: Yasuko Agawa's 'L.A Nights', a glossy 1986 single inspired by Light of the World's earlier dancefloor hit 'London Town', has long been regarded as a Japanese 'city pop' classic. It was also a big favourite amongst dancers on the UK's jazz-funk and soul scenes - thanks to a British issue on Bluebird - during the period, too, making this reissue extra appealing. Excitingly, this edition leads with a previously unreleased extended mix that wonderfully stretches out the tactile, laidback, synth-sporting jazz-funk number. The bassline, vibraphone solos and lead vocal from Agawa - sounding more like a Black American jazz singer than a Japanese popstar - are all superb. It comes backed by two fine B-sides: the classic, late-night vocal jazz of 'But Beautiful' and the stirring, up-tempo 'New York Afternoon'.

Wahala
Review: Tip Of The Iceberg presents 'Fela Dey'. These two tracks are lifted from 'P.D.P. (President Dey Pass)', the second CD
from the New York afrobeat scenesters, Akoya Afrobeat. Fully representing the instrumentation and capacity of a true
African-style super group, 'P.D.P.' is a marker of the living musical legacy of afrobeat founder Fela Kuti. Active on the
New York music scene since 2002, Akoya's sound rules dance floors home and abroad with the deep afro funk. Fueled
by infectious, all-consuming percussive grooves and a warm, pulsating rhythm section, the band delivers the knockout
punch with a massive horn section and soulful vocals. Musical roots not withstanding, 'P.D.P.' forges new ground in
many directions, yet still retains the central quality that bridges all musical tastes. Deep cyclical composition with a
prominent backbeat is their hallmark, and with razor-sharp transitions and melodies, listeners will be constantly surprised and elated.

Review: The mysterious Al Tone returns with another edition of crisp editcraft but this time on their own brand new label 020312. Business as usual in the groove department, though... "Remember Me" is a sultry disco funk jam, "Beggar" has a touch of Lagos late 70s about it with its fizzy guitar work and loose but firm strut while "Heaven" lives up to its name with full falsetto charm. Finally we close this monumental party with "Long Journey" an outrageously funky gospel jam that will have your floor asunder by the first slap bass twang and happy slappy piano roll. These numbers stack up.

Afrodiscobeat (11:56)
Afrodiscobeat (Africaine 808 rework) (9:55)
Afrodiscobeat (Mexican Institute Of Sound rework) (4:06)
Review: For the second volume in the Tony Allen and Africa 70 Disco Afro Re-Edit series, Africaine 808 and Mexican Sound Institute have been given the tricky task of reworking some suitably epic classics. The 12-minute original version of "Afro-Disco Beat", long considered one of the greatest Afrobeat workouts of all time, proudly stretches out across the A-side, allowing listeners to revel in Allen's extended drum breaks and Africa 70's rousing, horn-heavy instrumentation. Africaine 808 give the track a deliciously spacey, Moog-heavy makeover, combining Allen's playing and Africa 70's horns with vintage drum machine hits and outer-space effects. A brilliant package is completed by Mexican Sound Institute's similarly spacey, intergalactic interpretation of 1979 cut "African Message".

Review: 'Dreamtime Trance' is a cult gem for those who like to dig deep, and Alston Koch is exactly that person. She is a Sri Lankan-born Australian musician and the mastermind behind the Kookaburra Connection project, a collaboration with Aboriginal musicians, and this track blends indigenous themes with a unique, game-changing beat and infectious groove. It's a pure dancefloor revelation and this reissue includes a new extended version with a longer intro buildup that adds depth to the track. On the B-side, the heartfelt ballad 'Midnight Lady' offers a contrasting mood that is perfect for after-hours relaxation with PiNa Coladas. Review: In the City of Chi a DJ is only taken seriously when playing his edits, so it doesn't come as a surprise that Stilove4music can tap into a never ebbing fountain and as always delivers more of the prime stuff. The A-side holds a early 80s dance essential from the sharpest trombone player in soul and funk music, who went solo without the godfather on this track. Each time the original gets played the place goes off, therefore the intro has been extended, drums and piano line tease with expectation then BANG! in come those famous horns, twisting, turning and forcing your head to nod profusely. The flip holds another early 80s funk monster stripped down bare naked and raw. Catchy like Anthrax.

They are all very different in style but all highly effective. 'International Truth' opens with strident and funky disco drums and noodling guitar lines with soulful tones lighting up the beats. 'Don's Expensive Afro' is a rework of a rare Afro-disco track with more expressive vocals instructing the floor to move. Last of all is a stunning reimagining of an overlooked Stevie Wonder gem, 'Stevland's Run', which is off-balance and unusual funk madness laden with psyched-out guitar work.

"In My Tree house", purportedly delivered over a two week period of recording and fine tuning in a Rio studio, is a track dear to Azymuth member Jose Roberto Bertrami - dedicated to the great oak tree that obscures the view from his bedroom window. More importantly its vintage Azymuth, packed with tons of tight jazz funk hooks and vocal melodies. The flipside remix of "Crazy Clock" is a late night funk bomb filled with tight guitar lines and woozy moog flourishes sitting pretty on top of a delightfully low slung groove.

'Alloteva' opens up with a patter of toms and congas and squelchy bass, then 'Deflector' sinks deep and low, with seductive pads and balmy sunset sax lines. There are playful funk riffs underpinning 'Sonora' and leggy kicks and snappy hits making 'Time Is Plastic' a real chugger.

Review: Australian band The Bamboos have been holding down things on the funky side of town since 2001, gaining fans all over the world with their authentic, dirty funk nuggets. In the same vein as bands like El Michels Affair or Breakestra, these guys are students of the classic breaks that underpinned the sample-hungry glory days of hip-hop. They've also had the incredible honor to back up some of funk's most revered names, notably New Orleans hit-machine Eddie Bo, Syl Johnson and Eddie Floyd.

Ahead of their new album 4 comes single "On The Sly", a perfect slice of mid-tempo joy, which has the same rollicking cowbell-driven vibe as classic UBB staple "Get Me Back On Time, Engine Number 9" by Wilson Pickett. Soulsides MC and singer Lyrics Born joins them on 2nd cut Turn It Up, another popcorn funk winner complete with chicken-scratch guitar parts worthy of James Brown stalwart Jimmy Nolen. Hanging out with the Aussies seems to have rubbed off on the Californian MC, as he even sings "Turn it up mate" at one point! DJ's get taken care of with an accapella and an instrumental too, making this release a good way to put some funk back in your trunk.

Start Well (Bangers & Jass re-edit)
Review: Adult Music presents 'Som O Brasil'. This little nugget from Bangers & Jass features a rare obscure version of the Brazilian
classic 'Berimbau'. Sought after for many moons by the likes Patrick Forge, who went on to champion it. The flip features a
Batucada version of the Jorge Ben classic 'Comanche'.
