Review: A Certain Ratio are proof of how many new ideas a band can have. The UK post punk icons have always had an uncanny ability to release tracks into the world that seem to call on a multitude of styles - funk, blues, electro - and yet sound coherent but completely unique. This latest effort is testament to that, and also a wholeheartedly sentimental release with a story to tell.

Following on from ACR: EPA, which represented the last recordings of the band with iconic Manchester vocalist Denise Johnson, who tragically died in 2020 aged 56, EPC continues the series by inviting the inimitable The Emperor Machine in to the studio for a tribute to another lost great, Andrew Weatherall, with Jacknife Lee, Maria Uzor and Chris Massey all in the credits. Quality stuff. Again.

Berlin (white vinyl 7")
Cat: MUTE 621. Rel: 30 Oct 20
Experimental/Electronic
  1. Berlin (4:09)
  2. Dirty Boy (3:10)
Review: A Certain Ratio have returned with their most tight and funky album, possibly ever, recently, and it is steeped in 40 years of ACR DNA. Now you can grab two of the standout singles on this fine, limited edition white 7" thanks to Daniel Miller's essential Mute. Opener 'Berlin' is the second single from that album, ACR Loco, and has breezy vocals and Trillin riffs over tight drum work. 'Dirty Boy' is riddled with squelchy synth funk, with popping drums and a great vocal performance that will get any party vibing.

  10. Taxi Guy (4:59)
Review: A Certain Ratio's core trio of drummer Donald Johnson, bassist/vocalist Jez Kerr, and multi-instrumentalist Martin Moscrop make ACR Loco a perfectly fluid and funk album. In fact, on this, their first album in more than ten years, the Manchester post-punk outfit are as funky as they have ever been. Their tried and tested sound gets nicely updated with modern beat driven sounds and plenty of redefines to today's political strife in the lyrics. There are plenty of smooth and cool synth led grooves like 'Get A Grip' and messages of unity on 'Family' that we can all relate to.

  1. Souls In The City (part 2 & 1) (6:08)
  2. Night People (5:16)
  3. Big Boy Pants (6:31)
  4. Downtime Vibes (4:35)
Review: Let's face facts, the trilogy of releases that ACR:EPR completes have helped win over a new generation of fans for the band while reassuring established followers that A Certain Ratio can still do the business. They've been heartfelt and honest, truly innovative and - when all is said and done, at some point in the near future - destined to be considered collector's items.

The final chapter is certainly winding things up triumphantly. '$ouls In The City' seems to go straight for the mind's eye, an enrapturing track that chugs its way through layers of funk groove, with acid details just about audible on top. 'Night People' is a far more sticky, treacly affair, while 'Big Boy Pants' ushers in a kind of nocturnal seduction, brass and rolling breakbeats setting the scene perfectly for the ska-infused melodies of 'Downtime Vibes' that follow.

  3. Down & Dirty (Jam 2) (5:40)
  4. Feel No Fear (Jam 1) (5:21)
Review: Soon to be followed by two more from the mighty Ratio - ACR:EPC and ACR:EPR - EPA is the opening chapter in a triptych born from nothing. Or at least no fixed plan or specific agenda. A day spent jamming in the studio with close friend of the band and regular vocal collaborator, Denise Johnson, the recordings here and on the pair still to come represent the work they did that day, shortly before the world lost the woman in question forever.

Passing away in July 2020, well before her time, this is ACR paying tribute to another integral part of the Manchester music Factory. From the hypnotic and woozy 'Wonderland', where Donna Summer meets acid jazz, to the more straight-laced disco material - delivered with an edge you'd expect in terms of instrumentation and vocals - EPA is a fitting way to honour her legacy.

Review: Post-punk funkateers A Certain Ratio have always enjoyed an open relationship with dance music culture, so it seems fitting that they'd be responsible for one of the most interesting and entertaining remix albums of 2021. Loco Remezclada sees a varied ensemble rework cuts from their recent history, with predictably impressive - and eclectic - results. Of course, there's plenty of breathless post-punk dancefloor fusion on display - see Mr Dan's superb rewire of 'Down & Dirty' and 808 State man Graham Massey's low-slung take on 'Supafreak' - but also a swathe of more revelatory reworks. These include LoneLady mixing P-funk and boogie on her mix of 'Bouncy Bouncy', Skream turning 'Always In Love' into a powerpop stomper and Number re-imagining 'Taxi Guy' as a kind of 21st century take on Tony Allen/Fela Kuti style Afrobeat.

Review: German producer Apparat joins the venerable Mute stable with The Devil's Walk, his fourth studio album. The ten tracks on offer represent an intriguing stylistic shift for the producer, these days known as much for his role in sub-bass bothering trio Moderat as his solo endeavours. He has broadened his sound from a solo electronic endeavour to incorporate densely layered live instrumentation, although his knack for subtly euphoric jangling melodies remains. Each sonic exploration on The Devil's Walk ranges is breathtakingly delicate, from the spine-tingling rain drops and plaintive vocals on previously released single "Black Water" to the heavy, almost funereal mood on "Goodbye". Elsewhere there are excursions into post-dubstep territory ("Candil De La Calle"), richly melodic soundscapes ("Escapes") and strangely uplifting moments ("A Bang In The Void"). All in all, a masterful opus.

Review: The unveiling of an Apparat album is always cause for commotion with the artist influence enough to push radio stations to stream his music 24/7 upon release. Long passages of streaming synth-textures underline the loose and sparse percussive effects of Apparat's jazz and minimalism. The artist's signature bass pulses hit the sweet spot throughout the albums entirety, always inspiring a well of heavy feeling when they do. Touches of the artist's Bpitch Control days remain as does Apparat's always inspired approach when merging instrumentation with outboard gear and technology, beat making and sound design. A sound to cherish once more.

Review: RECOMMENDED
With its cover plucked straight from the imagination of Salvador Dali, and running to no less than four individual vinyls, this retrospective collection of Apparat's various film score chapters to date clearly means serious conceptual business. But it's far more than an exercise in proving artistic ingenuity.

As an artist, the chap better known to some as Sasha Ring has always been able to capture the spectrum of human emotions in instrumental arrangements, and this has perhaps never been clearer and in these beautiful but brief slices of sound. Work like 'La Gravidanza' won't leave a dry eye in the house, despite the fact it shares as much in common with a pre-symphony tune-up than a track per se. 'Reconciliation' feels like a sweet testament to redemption and moving forward, but barely has tangible structure. In short, many works of micro genius.

Review: London's legendary Mute institution goes back to its roots and digs up some of the best work by one of the UK's finest Cabaret Voltaire. These guys don't really need an introduction give the fact that they're pretty much responsible for the rise of post-punk right through to the birth of techno. It was about time a new compilation of their stuff was released, especially one as brutally on-point as this one! All the classics such as "Nag Nag Nag", "Kneel To The Boss" and "On Every Other Street" are one here but the more obscure rarities that were previously only available on 7" are the real winners. "Just Fascination", for example, is one you'll certainly want on a longer, re-mastered cut! Downright essential!

Review: The arrival of a new Cabaret Voltaire album - the first since 1994 according to our records - should excite all those who hold the work of the pioneering Sheffield outfit dear. It's now a solo project from Richard H Kirk (he decided to keep the name after parting company with Stephen Mallinder in the late '90s), but the distinctive stylistic ticks remain (think paranoid sonic textures, metallic percussion hits, clear dub influences, plentiful spoken word samples, curious electronic noises and nods towards the industrial funk, EBM and post-punk). Naturally it's not as ground-breaking as Kirk and company's work in the '70s and '80s, but it is undeniably a Cabaret Voltaire album - and one that subtly updates the Cabs' particular brand of dense, dancefloor-ready paranoia for a new century.

Review: In 1979, Cabaret Voltaire - then consisting of all three founder members, Richard H. Kirk, Stephen Mallinder and Chris Watson - recorded a soundtrack for an experimental film "for two projectors" by Babeth Mondini. 40 years on, that soundtrack has finally been given a release. It's similar in tone to some of the Sheffield experimentalists' other soundtrack work from the period, offering discordant, unsettling and otherworldly sound collages that fuse heavily modified and processed instrumental parts (guitar, bass, drums, clarinet, saxophone) with tape loops, sampled dialogue and the band's ever-present electronic tones. Whether you're an obsessive Cabs fan or not, it's well worth a listen. This is, after all, a slice of previously hidden musical history.

Review: RECOMMENDED
When electronic hero Richard H. Kirk returned in 2020 under the Cabaret Voltaire moniker - changing band to solo project for the first record in 26 years, Shadow of Fear - it couldn't have been more apt. Known for exploring darker and more visceral ends of synthdom, the musical boundary-pusher delivered a record that was alarming, challenging and completely unique, confirming that old habits really do die hard.

12 months or so later and the world is still trapped in the chaotic mess it was when that LP dropped, but Kirk has clearly opted to explore new ideas and break yet more new ground. Dekadrone lives up to its name, offering four lengthy movements that showcase the effectiveness of refrains and the musicality that can be created, or found, in extended notes and ongoing atmospheres. Another work of staggering genius.

Review: The Cabaret Voltaire resurgence continues, not that Richard H. Kirk's groundbreaking electronic project every went away in the eyes and ears of disciples. Nevertheless, 2020's Shadow of Fear album was his first in 26 years under the celebrated moniker (now a solo show), and so it's no wonder people are lapping up every wave and ripple that record created.

Enter BN9Drone, the latest offspring to arrive after the long form, and a release that may or may not be inspired by a drone flying over the BN9 postcode in Brighton, UK. If that was the catalyst, we want to know the make and model of the drone, because it certainly makes some pretty out-there noises. Opening on what sounds like aural evidence there is life up there in the stars, it's classic Cab Vol art-as-noise, noise-as-art, atmospheric stuff, so let's leave it at that.

Review: When Cabaret Voltaire returned to the release schedule in 2020 as the one-man Richard H Kirk show, fans were relieved to find that mind-bending meld of 1970s Kosmische, techno, dub, house and space-age experimental electro was as pure as it ever has been - the results being a typically fresh and forward-thinking record the man in question summed up as "no nostalgia... normal rules do not apply. Something for the 21st Century. No old material."

Less than six months later and the big CV has more next level business to offer us, coming in the form of Shadow of Funk, a new EP that offers something of a counterpoint or extension to last year's full-length, Shadow of Fear. Based on 'Billion Dollar' alone - an acid-driven big, dark room banger that closes this EP -this release looks set to make an equally heavy impact, but as with anything this man touches, the joy is in discovery. So, let's leave it at that.

Review: Krautrock legends, visionary iconoclasts and one of the most influential bands of the last half century they may be, but not many folk would have had Can pegged as a singles band, given that their origins in the kaftan-clad realm of the late-'60s and early-'70s tended more to full-length explorations in which the full force of their expression could be unleashed. This triple vinyl compilation not only rubbishes this preconception but offers a glimpse into the full spectrum of sound, from the sky-kissing serenades of 'Future Days' to the dancefloor-filling swagger of 'I Want More' and even the unlikely Christmas carol 'Silent Night'. A life-affirming compilation from a gang of longhairs like no other.

Review: RECOMMENDED
You always feel like you've pushed through the other side of the mirror when it comes to CAN. A mysterious, groove-laden, funk-infused yet utterly lucid place where guitar hooks seem to come out of the walls, rhythmic hypnosis draws listeners ever-deeper into a place that, while perhaps not entirely theirs, is one which they helped build in the outer limits of late-1960s surrealist rock.

Laying the foundations for early progressive and krautrock with an avant-garde approach to songwriting, by the time this Stuttgart gig took place they had almost a decade of work to go at, and yet as the tracklist suggests the band always had improvisation at their core in a live setting. Concerts that would transport crowds far beyond the venue, into thick layers of melody, hooks and strange effects, every single recording of every show is a genuine moment in history never to be repeated again.

Review: CAN fans can best believe this one won't be a flash in the pan. Slated for this coming December via the unmatched Mute label, 'Live In Brighton' documents an important snapshot in the krautrockers' live game, and is the second album in a curated series of their live concerts. First recorded on tape, it's now been carefully restored and remastered from the original run. Catch whiffs of a rare Michael Karoli vocal on track 3, as well as a Jaki Liebezeit solo on track 5, and even a rare live jam version of their 'Vitamin C' on track 7. This one also comes with an extensive booklet full of sleeve notes and other tidbits by journalists Kris Needs and Rob Young.
