Deep House
  1. Discotronic (8:34)
  2. The Woohh Sound (7:11)
  3. Kiwi Kawi (6:12)
Review: French disco deviant and Robsoul/Ondule mainstay Around 7 is back with more bumpin' and loopy house jams for proper house gangsters on the rather infectious "Discotronic" with its hypnotic bass riff and dusty drums really doing the business. "The Woohh Sound" does exactly what it says on the tin: you could really imagine DJ Sneak or Mark Farina using this one to whip up a frenzy at some Chicago basement party. Finally we have "Kiwi Kawi" which serves up some late night deep house of the smooth and sexy variety. More quality and reliable grooves from Phil Weeks' esteemed label out of Paris.

  2. Sorry James (Minority's Rub Le Dub mix)
  3. Dissology
Review: Robsoul Friends are back with a new EP! After their last track together "Real Juice" & the best track "The Acid", they delivery a solid EP with 2 funky tracks directly in line with their influences. Maybe "Sorry James" is sample from a disco classic (find it!) used by Sneak on Strictly! Still, sub-bassline & vocoder voices here, Chris & Hector have done a remix themselves for this EP! Minority dub like old Frisco track with perfect drums!

  2. It's Alright (Raw mix) (6:20)
  3. Ojo Rojo (6:26)
Review: Given his usual productivity, Mobilee man Sebo K has been rather quiet of late. This is his only his third outing in three years, and sees him make his belated debut for Phil Weeks' Robsoul Recordings. It's arguably more solid than sensational, with Catalyst delivering a trio of floor-friendly DJ tools. He offers a nod towards classic French filter disco and vintage Mr G productions on the bumpin' title track - all bold bass, relentless rhythms and a few choice effects - before wandering off in a more obviously soulful, dusty direction on the Andres style bumper "It's Alright (Raw Mix)". Finally, he delves deeper into deep house/tech-house crossover territory on the smooth and intricate "Ojo Rojo".

  1. Jack To My Groove
  2. El Underground (Phil Weeks Ghetto dub)
  3. Gotta Feelin'
Review: Having surfaced late in 2011 on a limited white label crudely emblazoned with the catalogue number PW01, the latest jacking excellence from Robsoul's Phil Weeks gets a release proper in the first few days of the new year. Presented on clear vinyl, the Jack To My Groove EP is typical perma jacking Weeks fare, with the title track proving to be a potent and hypnotic effort in particular. All expertly placed vocal samples and creeping basslines forming with rhythmic excellence around constantly undulating drums. Alongside it Weeks presents a tough dub take on "El Underground", the Los Escorpiones collaboration betwixt Chi Town heavyweight Sneak and Hector Moralez. On the flip "Gotta Feelin'" is Weeks at his finest, all playful filtered vocal leads and multi layered percussive swagger - the latter part where the creeping analogue lines and urgent vocals take centre stage is superb.

  1. Paris 2.0 (6:42)
  2. Upper Zone (6:26)
  3. City of Love (7:29)
Review: Label boss Phil Weeks is up next on his legendary Parisian imprint Robsoul with the City Of Love EP. It's funky, loopy disco house goodness of the deeper variety and opening track "Paris 2.0" sets the standard pretty well, straight off the bat. Also on the A side is the low slung deep groove of "Upper Zone" with dusty conga drums doing most of the work beneath a hypnotic melody. On the flip we've got the title track which is smooth and sleazy with its filtered funk/soul loops doing most of the work for early evening mood lighting on the dancefloor.

  1. It's Inside That Counts (Eats Everything Reebeef) (6:04)
  2. It's Inside That Counts (8:00)
Review: Right from the tip of his top hat, Eats Everything has got serious beef with us... And we couldn't be happier about it. Taking Weeks' 2014 Holloway-belting thumper and ramping the dickens out of every clattering snare roll and chugging kick, Eats' take on "It's Inside That Counts" rattles and hums with subtle edit craft. Retaining everything that's great about the original (and the samples Weeks used) this hits every dancefloor spot imaginable. Tip!

  1. On The Floor (5:53)
  2. Funk In Your Trunk (Tool) (6:57)
  3. Be With U (6:46)
Review: Phil Weeks, the unstoppable force behind Paris' esteemed Robsoul Recordings is back at it again with the On The Floor EP. The title track on here is one of his fiercer offerings in recent times and could find definite crossover appeal with techno DJs with its relentless and over-compressed stomp, giving it an industrial edge and real dubby feel until that disco sample comes creeping in gradually. Be sure to check this out, it's a killer! It's then business as usual on the loopy and funked up DJ tool "Funk In Your Trunk (Tool)" which puts him up there with DJ Sneak as masters of disco cut-ups. Finally on the flip is the roaring funky-disco house soon to be anthem "Be With U".

  3. Love Come Down (dub) (6:19)
  4. Love Come Down (instrumental) (6:20)
Review: For his latest trick, Paris-based deep house veteran Phil Weeks has re-made Evelyn 'Champagne' King's 1982 boogie smasher "Love Come Down" with the assistance of long-serving vocalist Ladybird. Her interpretation of King's vocal - half sung, half spoken, and simultaneously both soulful and sleazy - works particularly well on the "Main Mix", which sits somewhere between reverential electrofunk and rolling contemporary house. Of the various alternative mixes, it's the chunky, effects-laden Dub - clearly inspired the NYC proto-house movement of the early-to-mid-'80s - that stands out, though the stripped-back "Ghetto Mix" is pretty tasty, too. As updates of stone cold classics go, this particular version of "Love Come Down" is rather good.
