Review: The Magic Wand label casts another of its sonic spells with an anonymous artist at the helm. It's a knowing blend of many different influences all subtly distilled into a low-key classic. There are elements of yacht rock, Balearic, dub, funk and soul all to be found here. The bassline of 'Crossfire' is slight but funky, the drums sit low in the mix but soon sweep you away on a gentle breeze at sundown and the vocals are effortlessly cool and carefree but really cut through with a quiet charm. This bit of disco sorcery is a one-sided gem that is never going to leave your bag.

Dub To Funk (Piers Harrison re-edit)
Movin Ya (Millie McKee re-edit)
Funkin Dub (Vanity Project re-edit)
Murderous Style (Chuggy re-edit)
Review: London's Mysticisms label spill valorous guts in issuing this new dub and breakbeat crossover record from Dub Specialists. Having emerged from te potent 1980s-90s fallouts that enshrouded the pioneering digital roots label Conscious Sounds, Dub Specialists tracked the storied meeting-of-minds that was and still is Douglas Waldrop, Piers Harrison, and Stuart "Chuggy" Leath. This time, the trio are heard teaming up with DJ Millie McKee and studio brain Matt Bruce to formate yet another splinter cell, as missionaries of Conscious Sounds' digital mission: to explore samplers and videogame sounds in dub and funk. Using an Atari 1040 running Cubase and armed with a Soundcraft mixer, this latest iteration hears drum loops and reggae basslines played over funk samples and layered with Petter's chords, crafting a series of short, DJ-worthy heaters. The result is unhindered by expectation and breaks many calcified digidub moulds, as on 'Funkin Dub', where speak n' spell garblings meet downtown funk licks and sonorant snare whacks.

Review: If you at first mistakenly read the title of the new Pye Corner Audio box set as "Where Things Are Now: No Tomorrow", you're not alone - Martin Jenkins' effortless blend of retro-nostalgia and forward-facing production is a keen match for reflexive cynicisms like this. His use of sizzling vintage audio-tropes could only have been achieved in the 21st Century and helps foster a reinstated optimism. The name of the full series is actually Where Things Are Hollow; and while two volumes have been released already, a third original one now comes added here, on top of a full remix roundoff featuring Alessandro Cortini, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith and John Talabot, producing this rather banging four-volume set.

Review: Svein Berge and Torbjorn Brundtland have carved out a singular space for themselves in electronic music and here the Norwegian pair offer us a live album, a document of their 2023 tour. It's a sprawling affair, clocking in at over two hours and featuring a diverse cast of vocalists. The tracklist reads like a who's who of leftfield pop, - - Alison Goldfrapp, Robyn, Susanne Sundfor and Fever Ray among them - each voice adding a different shade to Royksopp's already nuanced sound. 'What Else Is There?', a reworking of the Royksopp classic featuring Fever Ray, is an early highlight, a brooding, intense rendition that transforms the original into a pulsating dancefloor beast. Elsewhere we get the Robyn collaboration 'Do It Again' and 'Running To The Sea' featuring Susanne Sundfor, and even die-hard fans will find something to discover here, with subtle tweaks and re-imaginings offering a fresh perspective on familiar material. A fitting tribute to Royksopp's enduring appeal and their ability to continually evolve and innovate.

Review: A standout blend of vintage hip-hop, capturing the essence of early 90s sound. Side-1 features 'Ode To Native Tongues', a tribute to the influential Native Tongues collective, packed with classic samples, scratching and a nostalgic vibe that celebrates the golden era of hip-hop. Side-2 presents a tribal groove-driven track with sharp, insightful lyrics. It's a true hip-hop underground gem, with a rhythmic flow that stands out as both thought-provoking and danceable. This 45 is an essential weapon for DJs and fans of 90s hip-hop who appreciate its deeper cuts and hidden treasures.

Review: Neapolitan funk maestro Mystic Jungle returns with a new LP less than a year after the dreamy Words of Love with more astrally-charged electro/boogie/disco type wonderment. Dario di Pace's third full-length has been quietly brewing for years, shaped by studio shutdowns and shifts in location i and that patchwork journey adds a certain character to the gorgeously technicolour music on show. It's perhaps his most eclectic and free-flowing release yet: a bright, hazy blend of styles that feels both loose and deeply considered. On the dancefloor end, tracks like 'Secrets' and 'Some Lovin'' burst with disco grooves, searing guitars, call-and-response vocals and sultry sax lines. Elsewhere, 'Innervision' and 'Twilight' lean into lovers rock and wavy neon-dub pop, full of yearning, shimmer and otherworldly flourishes. Then there's the stoner sway of 'The Road' and 'Get Me Higher' i sun-soaked, psychedelic jams with zoned-out soul at their core. A richly immersive Amalfi joyride from start to finish, the Periodica fire just keeps on burning.

Review: It’s a remarkable statistic that Payfone – the long-serving production partnership of Phil Passera and Jimmy Day – have not released an album before, despite building up a killer catalogue of singles over the last 12 years. The vinyl-only Lunch, then, is a genuinely significant release ¬– and, happily, a rather brilliant one too. Featuring an impressive roll-call of guest vocalists and musicians, it sees them deliver six excellent riffs on their analogue-rich, hybrid house/Balearic/nu-disco sound. The plentiful highlights include the dubbed-out, low-slung and atmospheric opener ‘Movin’ On’, the infectious, spaced-out boogie of ‘Joan of Arc’ (whose chorus will be stuck in your head for days), sensual jazz-funk jam ‘Spend The Night’ and the warming, sun-soaked delight that is ‘Pony Bar’.

Review: Japanese jazz fusion continued to take off with Masayoshi Takanaka's fourth album, one that is admittedly referential to Brasilia and its native styles, yet which flaunts Takanaka's virtuosic playing, and put the recreative flair of Japanese players of styles like samba, bossa nova and prog-rock on the map. All instrumental, it marks a shift from prior album An Insatiable High (1977), which brought a relatively aerobic seven-track feel; Brazilian Skies is the trans-Indian holiday after the marathon, bringing lilting beachside hums and coconut claves to a multi-instrumental funk bonanza.

Review: This 1972 masterpiece opens with 'Watcher of the Skies,' an expansive track that marries atmospheric keyboards and quirky rhythmic bombast with Gabriel's distinct voice, while its centrepiece. 'Supper's Ready,' stretches over 20 minutes, shifting effortlessly between prog grandeur and delicate folk. The album's blend of complex structures and emotional depth is evident in 'Get 'Em Out by Friday,' which combines sharp social commentary with intricate time signatures. Throughout, the band proves their mastery of dynamics, using their progressive rock sound to push boundaries while remaining grounded in emotional resonance. A timeless exploration of musical freedom.

Review: Lost and Found is an instrumental hip-hop landmark that captures DJ Shadow and DJ Krush at the height of their powers. Originally a label-defining early release on Mo Wax, both sides of this split single set the blueprint for sample-heavy, cinematic beat-making that still resonates today. Shadow's layered textures and Krush's dusty groove sensibilities complement each other perfectly, both tracks blending eerie atmospheres with deep, off-kilter rhythm, bridging Tokyo and California in a haze of vinyl crackle and head-nod funk. Essential listening i not just for fans of Shadow or Krush, but for anyone curious about the roots of modern downtempo and trip-hop.

Review: If you like your disco, funk and soul edits noodly, low-slung and spiritual, consider your options no further than Dave Maze's D&E imprint. Homegrown in Chicago - long fecundated Midwestern ground for all things dignified dance music - Maze cultivated D&E out of the local rare groove and soulful house scene in the city, going on to sign many an eminent on the circuit. But it's Maze himself here who shines, slaying the Minotaur to master a labyrinthine haul of tracks complementing an initial two 'Disco Yams' from October: these are root veg, groove prize-winners, plucked from the ground. Uncanny strings and digital disco progressions make for a rarely cold, inorchestral movement on the A, which develops quite assuredly.

In the opener, Blue Mondays crafts a journey into Italo's heart that honours the pioneers with his own twist. The instrumental version adds pure musicality, letting beats and melodies shine while on the B-side, 'Countach (Driving Mix)' channels classic Italo's driving energy, then 'Strangers from the Past (Vocal Mix)' draws from new wave influences to skillfully bridge past and present.

First up, they also call on Mr. And-7 to get involved on 'La Malanga 25', a sunny funk jam with raw horns that bring a Mexican twist to the percussive drums and lively pianos. Marelua steps up for the flip side, 'Paragunde 45', which slows things down and burns warm and bright with Portuguese vocals and plenty of gorgeous acoustic guitar trills. Both of these are primed and ready to inject Latin flavour into any set the moment the sun comes out, so are likely to fly off the shelves.

Review: Alt-dub never quite found its mainstream moment, but for those attuned to its intricacies, it remains a defining undercurrent in electronic music. Unlike its dubstep cousin, which relied on aggressive basslines and in-your-face drops, alt-dub takes a more measured approach, focusing on subtlety and complexity. It's about crafting a vibe, not smashing through it. San Francisco-based artist Federsen has been a pivotal figure in this niche for over a decade, using vintage tape delays and analogue gear to build immersive, textured soundscapes. His work with labels like Silent Season, Greyscale, Lempuyang and Ohm Series perfectly embodies how dub's elements of space, decay and resonance can be transformed into hypnotic, dancefloor-driven rhythms that unfold slowly. Tracks like 'Dub Trail' and 'Silent Whispers' reflect Federsen's signature approach: slow, deliberate builds, where the bassline is felt more than heard, and the subtle shifts in atmosphere draw us into the groove. It's not about immediate impact, but rather about crafting a space where the music breathes and where the transitions are felt as much as they are heard. 'Echoes In The Void' pushes this idea even further, with its dense, evolving layers of sound, while 'Lunar Dub' offers a more stripped-back, meditative experience. Through Federsen's work, the genre stands as an exploration of depth and atmosphere, where every moment of silence and every drawling transition plays an integral part in the experience.

Review: Detroit dub techno don Luke Hess says that this is his "most eclectic and techno-driven album to date" and that it blends together his signature subterranean sounds with his indelible Motor City touch. It again works well on cultured dance floors but is also a deeply spiritual album that will have your mind wandering to some lovely places. From the opening moments of 'Dokimion' you're sunk into widescreen soundscapes that pair painterly synths with immersive low ends. Cuts like 'Stoicheo' bring serene melodies and closer 'Hiketeria' is a misty, foggy cut that oozes late-night intimacy.

Review: Van Halen's 1984 remains a seminal record in the history of rock music, marking a significant pivot in both the band's sound and its broader influence on the genre. Released in a year crowded with iconic albums from heavyweights like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Bon Jovi, 1984 stood out with its innovative use of synthesisers, a bold move for a band traditionally known for its hard-hitting guitar-driven rock. This sonic shift, spearheaded by Eddie Van Halen's exploration of keyboards, made the album both controversial and groundbreaking, with 'Jump' becoming a defining anthem of the era. The album kicks off with the brief, synth-driven title track that transitions seamlessly into 'Jump,' a song that introduced a new layer of polish to Van Halen's sound without sacrificing the energy or fun that defined their earlier work. Despite initial resistance from die-hard fans, 'Jump' became the band's most commercially successful song, balancing Eddie's keyboard experimentation with David Lee Roth's larger-than-life vocals. Following 'Jump', the album dives back into more familiar territory with tracks like 'Panama' and 'Hot For Teacher', showcasing the signature blistering guitar riffs and infectious rhythms that put Van Halen on the map. 'Panama' is an explosive rocker, with crunching guitars and Roth's unmistakable charisma, while 'Hot For Teacher' opens with one of the most recognizable drum intros in rock history. The band's chemistry is on full display, combining wild guitar solos, booming bass lines, and energetic vocals. Deeper cuts like 'Top Jimmy' and 'Drop Dead Legs'' are often overshadowed by the big singles but still highlight the band's dynamic range. 'I'll Wait', with its atmospheric production and introspective tone, stands as one of the more unique entries in the Van Halen catalog, blending ghostly vocal effects with the band's pop sensibilities. Produced by Ted Templeman, 1984 strikes a delicate balance between the more polished sound of mainstream rock and the band's rough, raw origins. The album's commercial success, aided by MTV and the rise of music videos, cemented Van Halen's place in the pantheon of rock greats. Even 40 years after its release, 1984 sounds fresh, an enduring testament to Van Halen's ability to innovate without losing their core identity. Whether it's the flashy guitar solos, Roth's exuberant vocal performances, or the bold use of synthrs, 1984 captures a band at the peak of their powers, pushing boundaries while staying true to their rock 'n' roll spirit.

Review: Fennesz's first album in over five years is a moquettish mosaic of heart-tugging synth string movements and tinctured textures, described by its releasers P-Vine as bearing "terrifyingly detailed sound image". If inhalatory gasps in the face of the Byronic sublime were merged with the atmospheric-communicative chatter of radio and telecoms, this would be the sonic result. Described as Christian Fennesz' most introspective album to date, the record follows a newfound process for the artist, which came after the construction of a new studio and the sticking to a strict regimen. The likes of 'Personare' and 'Goniorizon' reflect this commitment, with new molten plastic ventures in sound yielded as a result; clock the tender, hand-pulled, doughy sound design on the latter track in particular.

Techno
Review: A cornerstone of early 90s electronic music, Orbital's Lush resurfaces with renewed energy through the Orbital LEDs reissue campaign. Originally released in 1993, the EP is a masterclass in melodic techno, featuring the iconic 'Lush 3-1' and 'Lush 3-2', two seamlessly interwoven tracks that exemplify the Hartnoll brothers' knack for crafting emotionally resonant, rhythmically complex soundscapes. Reissued on 12" with striking new artwork by Intro, this edition includes heavyweight remixes by Underworld and CJ Bolland, whose reworks push the tracks deeper into the club stratosphere. Underworld brings a dense, propulsive momentum, while Bolland injects a sleek, hard-edged urgency. Yet it's Orbital's originals that remain the centerpiece. Those epic gliding arpeggios, layered synths and rolling percussion conjure both introspection and euphoria. A vital part of their Brown Album, Lush helped define the progressive techno movement, influencing generations of producers. Three decades on, the tracks still pulse with a timeless vibrancy.

Review: Formed in 2020, Tommy Paslaski, Ben Paulson and Akeem Asani have evolved their sound as Purelink from dub techno and '90s drum 'n bass to vaporous jazz and post-rock elements. Their second album embraces fluidity by mixing live instrumentation and vocals with their signature ambient and rhythmic experimentation. It also reflects a period of upheaval as they moved from Chicago to New York City and went on to incorporate acoustic and electric elements alongside contributions from Loraine James and poet Angelina Nonaj. Tracks like 'First Iota' and 'Kite Scene' explore evolving, atmospheric soundscapes and the album culminates in the rather more euphoric 'Circle of Dust'.

Review: Emil Gayles delivers a standout deep house experience with her title song 'Dansons Bougeons'. This gem is a soulful house groove that shines in multiple forms. The Trinidadian Deep vocal remix on Side-1 gives the track a techy, atmospheric spin, blending smooth, melodic layers with a breezy flow, perfect for late-night listening. The instrumental version on the same side takes this mood further, emphasising cascading piano lines and lush waves that deepen the track's beauty, showcasing Trinidadian Deep's skill in creating an evocative, melody-focused atmosphere. To compliment the original, the instrumental is also featured here and allows the production's soulful essence to come through more clearly, with smooth rhythms and light, sun-drenched chords. Together, these tracks capture a seamless balance between emotive depth and danceable vibes.

Lifting a key verse from Busta Rhymes' 'Woo-Hah! Got You All In Check', Rick Rhymes' flip 'Mary's Woo Hah!' brings x-treme, swirling psycho-funk to an aggressive vocal register and flow from the original Rhymes cut, providing an impressive but unlikely contrast. 'Stars In Your Yes Yes' by Hancock, meanwhile, flips over the sandtimer for a retroistic Texan funk rap swatch, sampling Red Hot Lover Tone's 'Yes, Yes' to supreme effect.

Review: Copenhagen's finest duo deliver deep, hypnotic dub techno, straight from the source. 'Wind' strikes us zephyrously with tizzy stabs and harder grooves, whilst 'Stylus' impresses with a relatively minimal flick of the pen, making for a quick and effective intra-vention. 'Viper' and 'Garth' run with this sense of freedom, unburdening themselves with gaseous headrooms, ample spaces in which to let the reverse hits and tonal whacks breathe. A worthy debut for the French fabulists over at Syncrophone, though Merv are hardly new to the game.

Review: Dungen Meat duo Brawther and Tristan Da Cunha deal in heavyweight, no-nonsense house and that is embodied in their label Slabs, which focuses on the deeper side of things and now welcomes Dutch talent Job de Jong for a stylish brace of cuts. 'Like This' draws from all over - dubwise vocal samples, percussion from garage, kicks from house music and echo from dub. It's a physical, bouncy sound for energising the dance floor without ever resorting to gimmicks. On the flip, 'MB' pumps a garage-house vibe with dusty drum rotations and snares that flap in the wind. Add in bulbous organ lines and balmy pads and you have a nice neon heater.

Review: Inspired by his neon-lit walks around London's docklands, crate digger Ilan Pdahtzur's 2019 compilation Night City Life marked him out as a dusty-fingered crate digger and record collector with a distinctive, synth-heavy musical vision. It made him the toast of the selector/collector community, but more than that it was a genuinely superb selection of obscure, hard-to-find cuts. This belated sequel is every bit as essential and filled, unsurprisingly, with rare and lesser-known gems. Highlights are too plentiful to mention, but our current favourites include Sharon & Tracey's 'The Sheik' (a belly-dancing inspired slab of TB-303 bass-driven house hedonism), Jennifer's 1992 Euro-house gem 'Come Into My Life', Scicilian musician Claudio D'Ignoti's boogie-era treat 'Ache Per Noir', and the fashion scene inspired leftfield synth-pop of Lena's 'Embrasse-Moi (Strumentale)'.

Review: They say that everything goes in 20-year cycles, from music to fashion to film. The reissue of this trance-dance classic just about chimes with that - it was a huge crossover club and radio hit at the dawn of the new millennium and embodied the Ibiza superclub era with its shiny beats and euphoric melodic overtones. It is one of a few that Sash! turned out back then but remains his most iconic. The more youthful end of the dance spectrum is very much into these sounds at the moment, as well as hard dance and trance, so it is likely to be huge all over again this summer, no matter which of the different times you pick from.

The seventh volume in this new iteration of the series comes in two parts, and brings two further soft disco inflammations: 'Fooled', a pre-coffee, rheumy Sister Sledge disco edit, and 'So Much Love', an unknown cut whose lyrics return plenty of red herrings on the 'ole search bar.

Review: Fletcher heads up the Social Currency label but you may also know him from his superb work with Mosaic boss Steve O'Sullivan. It's no wonder then that he calls up his dub techno buddy for the second outing here. They kick off with 'Flutter' which is a minimal dub masterpiece with light and airy synths, yep, fluttering up top above rooted, rolling drums. Fletcher then goes it alone for 'From A Different Place' which is a little more anxious in its loops but still has gorgeous melodies streaming through the mix. 'This Day Has Been Too' is another fine solo cut that explores insular and inward moods with great deftness.

Kepler has been a regular contributor to this fine catalogue and returns with more of his shuffling, playful and charming garage cuts. 'Recall' manages to be both deep and driving, with cute chord stabs and a smart vocal sample that adds the r&b gloss. 'Flavour' has those old school stabs and filthy basslines and 'Loft Groove' is a bouncy, low-slung number with organic percussion. Closing out another high-grade offering is 'Don't Stop' which brings some dubby chords to a slick, punchy house rhythm. Pure class.

Review: Remarkable future deep house from an artist whose reputation speaks for itself, nonetheless through the wing-flapped wings and freedom trills of the past. As he came of age in New Jersey in the mid 1980s, Kerri Chandler's groove-driven productions and rapt DJ sets could easily be said to have "evangelised" the dancefloor, with the deep and soul-bearing tilt of his sound seeming to promise salvation. Undoing and atonement come to those who shrive not in speech, but by moving their feet. 'Caged Bird' first came in 2020 - well past Chandler's 90s purple patch - but nonetheless contained as ever the slickly sophisticated jazz and vocal reflections likely inherited from Chandler's father, the late great jazzer DJ Joseph Chandler. Nae sings on the track, and her lyrics name-check Maya Angelou, who adapted the infamous poem 'Sympathy' by Paul Laurence Dunbar under the name 'Caged Bird'.

Review: In the formative years of his career in the late 1990s and early 2000s, iRicardo Villalobos frequently utilised a handful of alternative production aliases - first Minta Spacew (one EP way back in 1993) and then more frequently Richard Wolfsdorf. Tia, first released way back in 2000, was the Chilean minimal maestro's second outing under that alias and has become a sought-after EP in recent times - hence this Rawwax reissue. A-side 'Echt Rot' is typically Playhouse-era Villalobos, with cut-up vocalisations, odd noises and spaced-out electronic snippets riding a crunchy minimal-house beat and looped, mind-mangling TB-303 bassline. Title track 'Tia' features simmering orchestral samples clustering around a typically wonky, stripped-back beat, while 'Feurwasser' sounds like the blueprint for many of his later minimal techno workouts.

'Nairobi Market' and its corresponding remix by Amber retread an apparent recent jaunt to Kenya, where a fantastical, mercantile mirage is said to have informed on the cyborg textures you hear here. 'Juicy Breakfast' takes and uses the dried viands bought on said market, amounting to a nice morning metal repast of nuts, bolts, and gluons: fatty acids, rivet potpourri, slippery background sound design. 'Memesis' titularly invokes the goddess of divine retribution but reduces her to an edible meme, as restless, posthuman vocalisations are heard to mutter and chirrup between snap-up beats.

Review: 70s and early 80s Jamaican producer Keith Hudson's approach to dub was never about smooth edges or easy rhythms. His productions are dense, disorienting, heavy with delay, bass and drums that sound like they're ricocheting down a well. The Soul Syndicate, his long-time studio band, provide the backbone hereideeply locked-in grooves that Hudson warps into something ghostly. 'No Commitment' staggers forward with stabbing guitar chops that seem to dissolve mid-strike, while 'Ire Ire' loops through warped vocal fragments and echo chambers that stretch into infinity. 'Bad Things' and its dub counterpart pull apart the rhythm until it feels skeletal, each hit landing in the empty space between delay trails. Hudson's use of reverb and tape manipulation isn't just about atmosphere, but about control as well. He shifts and reshapes the mix to turn steady rhythms into something unsteady, always shifting just out of reach. 'Desiree' drifts through flickering hi-hats and cavernous low-end, while 'Keeping Us Together' seems to slow down and speed up in the same breath. There's something darker, more claustrophobic in the way he structures space and silence. Even the brighter moments, like 'Mercy' with its open, rolling groove, carry an unease, as if the music itself is bracing for collapse. Review: Mate is one of Spain's most cultured deep house outlets and if you don't believe us then get your ears around this. Diego Ruiz, aka DFRA, is an Argentine music producer who here works as Experience Jazz Band and opens with 'The Human Discard' which pairs warm, cuddly drum depths and rolling grouches with majestic jazz melodies.
