Review: Smoove is back on Friday's Funky 45 with another of his irresistible mash ups. Larger than life, hard hitting and designed for maximum impact on inebriated dance floors, the opener marries Lizzo's vocals from 'Juice' with Boney M's 'Sunny', adds some hefty drums played by label mate Dr Rubberfunk and the results are real, if not subtle. Reverse it for a collision of Skee-lo's perma-anthem, 'I Wish' chopped up with the funky keys and soul of Stevie Wonder's classic of the same name. These are bait tunes, but we all need a bit of that from time to time.

Review: Cornish funkateer Daytoner rarely fails to deliver the goods, with his semi-regular seven-inch missives being amongst his most potent releases. He's at it again here, delierving two confirmed party-starting workouts that combine live funk and soul style instrumentation topped off with classic hip-hop acapellas. He begins with 'Life's a Bitch', where fast crew rap flows lifted from a much-loved hip-hop cut ride undulating bass guitar, laidback funk breaks and glistening guitars. He flips the script a little on flipside '(It Ain't) No Good', delivering hip-hop tempo beats, deep bass, luscious electric piano motifs and smart use of one of the most celebrated R&B vocals of the 1990s.

Review: Jorun Bombay likes to muck about with all sorts of different beats, but he always does it with real skill and personality. That's made him one Canada's most revered hip hop stars and here he tackles the one and only Parliament. His version of "Knee Deep" with its extra bass weight and shrill synth lines bring the party vibes thanks to the feel good pianos. "Mothership Bonus Beats" on the flip is a late night, slow and sleazy jam to get you in the mood. The squelchy synth bass is to die for, the drawn out horns linger long in the air making it a perfectly steamy cut.

Review: This production from boogie-era soul specialist Clark Jay has long been a sought-after item amongst collectors, with original copies of the 1981 Peach Tree Records 12" changing hands for significant sums online. Even if you're unfamiliar with it - and outside of record collecting circles, most people are - we'd recommend checking the sound clips of this first ever seven-inch reissue. 'Can't Stop Dancing' is particularly sweet and summery, with Jonnie 'Vibes' Lambert singing about his love of shaking his stuff atop spacey synthesizer lines and a relaxed, laidback disco-boogie groove. That tidy groove can be enjoyed further on the flipside instrumental mix, which makes excellent use of the original's female backing vocals and the aforementioned synthesizer melodies.

Review: Vancouver-based DJ and producer Nick Bike here recasts lyrics by East Oakland rapper Too Short's 'Blow The Whistle' in his own fine and inimitable style. The original - a hyphy track aimed right at the floor, with bubbling synth bass - came in 2006 and was produced by Lil-Jon and here is returned to its 70s funk roots. Donna Summer's 1979 chart-topping hit 'Bad Girls' gets sampled and dropped int this new version with extra whistles, chanted mantras plenty of sure fire, disco-ready energy. It's a reinvigorated hip hop anthem destined for hardcore spin backs once the clubs reopen.

Review: Emotional Rescue and HMV Record Shop (Japan) team up to present six limited edition 7"s of DISCO REGGAE LOVERS music. Featuring Sugar Minnott, Dambala, One Blood, 101 Band, Red Cloud and here to start, for the first time ever as a single, Ernest Ranglin's, cover of The Dramatics R&B classic, In The Rain.

A defining guitarist and composer in the development of Jamaican music, Ranglin's career spanned mento to reggae, playing on the groundbreaking recording of My Boy Lollipop itself, before going on to work with the likes of the Skatalies, Jimmy Cliff and Bob Marley.

Moving to Florida in 1982, he teamed up with Noel Williams to mix the bass heavy sound the producer was famous for with Ranglin's unique playing. Featuring a who's who of the Miami scene including Bobby Caldwell, Timmy Thomas, Betty Wright and Williams himself, In The Rain continued the link between R&B and reggae to sweet perfection.

To accompany, for half this series, a modern producer offers their own remix. Here Nik Weston, DJ, promoter and owner of the respected Mukatsuku label, releasing afro, jazz dance and more and with a long standing association with Japan, presents here an instrumental dub - letting the groove roll and Ranglin's ubiquitous playing to shine.

Review: Taken from a series of three 45s from the Vong45 catalogue where West Loop Chicago remake some of their favourite soul, jazz and funk records. For this release the WLC collective recreate the classic 'Daylight' as originally performed by RAMP in 1977, a Roy Ayers side project who also co-wrote and produced the track. Preserving the jazzy essence of the original by use of warm analogue synths and 'in the pocket' live playing, West Loop stay close to the 1977 version but with a more pronounced head-nod sensibility; a perfect ode to the Tribe Called Quest 'Bonita Applebum' sample. The B-side includes the '88 BPM Mono Version' while the A-side contains the groove heavy 'Main Version'. Ideal 45 material for this rare groove classic revamp.

Review: In recent times we've been treated to plenty of reissues of classic lover's rock gems, including an Athens of the North-released collection of lover's rock covers. It's therefore rather exciting to hear some brand-new lover's rock in a similar vein from Crucial Rockers, a studio band formed by producer Jamie Searle. The track given the cover treatment is Womack & Womack classic "Teardrops". While that was fiendishly uptempo, this version is sweet, slow and effortlessly soulful, with Searle's warming riddim offering a perfect match for the un-credited vocalist's fine delivery of the Womacks' weary and emotional lyrics. The flipside dub is rather tasty, too. Sadly there aren't many of these around, so act fast if you want to secure a copy!

Review: If you're a fan of the glossy "City Pop" sounds that emerged from Japan in the early 1980s - a particularly gorgeous, neon-lit version of synth-pop that drew on many US soul, jazz-funk and boogie influences - then you need this "45" in your life. Both of the tracks were recorded by Junko Ohashi at different points in the early '80s but are famous for appearing on her now highly sought-after 1984 compilation Magical, which the cover art mimics. A-side 'A Love Affair' is the undoubted pick of the pair: a smooth, multi-coloured concoction that sees Ohashi singing sweetly over a blend of squelchy synth-bass, fretless bass, sparkling synthesizer chords, electrofunk flourishes, Teena Marie style Latin horns and cracking drum machine beats.

On side A the studio collective gives their interpretation of Freddie Hubbard's 1970 epic 'Red Clay', with the track's most famous musical elements - jaunty sax riffs and mazy electric piano motifs - rising above a funkier, warmer and tighter interpretation of the track's low-end groove. Review: Emotional Rescue and HMV Record Shop (Japan) are delighted to present the first ever reissue of the 7" Mix of One Blood's classic Lovers Rock anthem Be Thankful, as part of their DISCO REGGAE LOVERS series.

While the King & City Records hit was reissued in its 12" form recently (ERC104), this unearthed 7" Mix perfectly distills the bands take on the William DeVaughn soul all-time.

At the forefront of the Lovers Rock movement, the 5 Robinson brothers that made up One Blood took their mix of Caribbean and South London heritage and crafted a uniquely black British sound, grown out of tensions, Sus law, Blues parties and sound system culture that acted as a counterpoint to the Rasta and Rocksteady styles around.

In 7" form, their cover version is taught, tight and succinct, hitting the highs, but retaining the dub. It is backed with a special mix by Tokyo producer Slowly. Closely associated with the esteemed Flower Records, Masato Komatsu aka Slowly also acts as Creative Director for the rebirth of the HMV Shops in Japan, so it is fitting his respectful dub mix dives from vocal opening straight in to the bassbins of a deep dub, this is one for the heads and collectors.

The tenth volume in the series kicks off with a mix-friendly tweak of Vaughan Mason's roller-boogie anthem "Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll" that expertly stretches out the previously all-too-short instrumental intro. Over on side B, Bad Bascomb's odd but brilliant country-funk hoedown "Black Grass" gets a similar treatment, with Breaks & Beats' un-named re-editor sneakily extending sweaty drum breaks here and there throughout the track. Given the quality of those breaks, this is a very good thing indeed.

Their latest seven-inch excursion begins with a tidy revision of Lafayette Afro-Rock Band's brilliant "Hihache", a low-slung favourite rich in lolloping, head nodding drum breaks, jazzy bass, flanged funk guitars and fuzzy horn motifs. The new version is deferential towards its source material, extending breaks here and there whilst leaving much of the tune in tact. One of the most doubled-up drum breaks in hip-hop history takes pride of place on side B, where Gaz's Salsoul released wiggler "Sing Sing" gets the re-edit treatment.

This volume takes a slightly different approach, instead delivering killer cuts from two different artists, both of whom hail from the North of Brazil. On side A you'll find Magalhaes' 1986 gem 'Xangos', a cheery and energetic Lambada workout rich in jangling guitars, shuffling percussion, ear-catching vocals and restless bass. On the reverse Os Panteros takes over with 1987 jam 'Lambada Pauleira', a quirky chunk of Lambada full of fuzzy synths, infectious percussion and lo-fi guitar licks. The cut was famously re-edited some time back by Joutro Mondo, though this original version is - in our opinion - far superior.
