Review: Not to be confused with the sweet dessert made from milk, cream and sugar, thickened via rice flour, gelatine, or Irish moss. To us, Blancmange refers to the English synth pop outfit formed in London circa 1979. Over seven years, Neil Arthur and Stephen Luscombe gave us a lot of incredible music, before calling time in 1986, only to return in the late-2000s eventually putting out a fourth album, Blanc Burn, in 2011. For the most part, Everything Is Connected celebrates their most fertile period through ten quality tracks (more are included on CD and DL versions), although technically what's here does span a 45 year period. Curated by Arthur, UK top ten singles 'Living On The Ceiling', 'Blind Vision' and 'Don't Tell Me' are here, but so too are some of their more overlooked gems.

Review: Surely one of the most iconic of all the British funk bands of the 90s, The Brand New Heavies split the difference between the heads-down seriousness of the rare groove scene with a sharp pop instinct which found them great success. This best of collection gives you hit after hit, and as soon as the irresistible groove of 'Never Stop' kicks in you'll be taken right back to that era. There's a house sensibility to some of the tunes which speaks to their proximity to Soul II Soul, but this is a funk band first and foremost, and their dynamic flow as a group is what resulted in such evergreen hits as 'Shelter' and 'Apparently Nothing'.

Review: The Brand New Heavies mark the 30th anniversary of their iconic 1994 album, Brother Sister, with this great and bumper reissue version. Renowned for its groove-driven, horn-infused funk and N'Dea Davenport's dynamic vocals, it is ripe with lush deep jazz grooves that all came after their debut Heavy Rhyme Experience Vol. 1. However, Brother Sister established its own distinctive presence and debuted at number four on the UK charts and achieved international acclaim, cementing the band's prominence on Acid Jazz. This newly remastered edition is available as a 2LP vinyl set that features one black and one white disc and includes three bonus tracks.

Review: The Brand New Heavies celebrate the 30th anniversary of their landmark 1994 album, Brother Sister. Known for its groove-driven, horn-laden funk and N'Dea Davenport's powerhouse vocals, the album delves into deep jazz grooves. Released after their debut and the Hip-Hop collaboration Heavy Rhyme Experience Vol. 1, Brother Sister carved out its own unique space. Debuting at number four on the UK charts, it achieved global success, solidifying the band's Acid Jazz dominance. This newly remastered edition comes as a 2CD version that includes two newly discovered demos, 'Pocketful of Bass' and an alternate version of 'Put Yourself In My Shoes'.

Review: Synthpop trio Bronski Beat's 1984 debut The Age of Consent is a rarity in musical history; it both defined a generation and challenged the status quo. 40 years later and The Age Of Consent remains as prescient and vital as ever as it did on its original release; transgressive, defiant, queer, and laden with hooks. To celebrate its anniversary, London Records revisit the album across a series of formats, uncovering sonic archival gems, new mixes and more. This new edition technically contains two LPs: The Age Of Consent and Hundreds & Thousands, with five bonus tracks for each, plus remixes from Absolute., Planningtorock, The Knocks, Dave Aude, Tall Paul, and Superchumbo. Also coming with a detailed insert doubling up as a timeline by project consultant Barnaby Ashton-Bullock, this is the definitive retrospective product for anyone looking to complete their Bronski Beat collection (as best they can, anyway, for the love'll probably never end...).

Review: The Durutti Column prove just how fertile the North West England music scene was during the mid-late-1970s and through the 1980s. Taking their name from an anarchist military movement active during the Spanish Civil War, the band was formed by Vini Reilly, who brought together a bunch of players from the nascent punk and post punk scene, and managed to turn heads in the process. One of which was Tony Wilson. One of the first acts to sign to his now-legendary Factory Records, they would remain on the imprint until its demise, by which time the project had become a solo thing for Reilly, whose name was already shorthand for risk taking with bold ideas. Take this record, for example, veering from Southern Mediterranean folk to experimental indie, sample-based rock-opera and more, it still defies expectations.

Review: Formed in the post-punk era of Manchester in 1978, The Durutti Column, led by guitarist Vini Reilly, has remained an enigmatic and influential force in the history of post-punk. Their 1989 release, aptly titled Vini Reilly, is a testament to Reilly's eclecticism and sonic experimentation. The album spans a vast musical landscape, encompassing elements of post-punk, rock, acoustic, avant-garde, jazz, classical, folk, pop, and electronica. The album's 35th anniversary reissue box set includes many great additions that allows listeners to appreciate the enduring impact of his artistry, as he continues to inspire and challenge music enthusiasts worldwide. Review: Echo & The Bunnymen's What Are You Going to Do with Your Life?, their eighth studio album, reflects a more introspective and matured sound from the post-punk icons. Released in 1999, this album marked a departure from their earlier work's grandiose, bass-driven rock, offering a gentler, acoustic-driven atmosphere. Tracks like the title song and 'Rust' highlight Ian McCulloch's soulful vocals, with lush string arrangements and a restrained yet heartfelt delivery. The addition of horn accents on 'Get in the Car' and 'When It Blows Over' brings unexpected warmth, while 'History Chimes' closes the album on a melancholic piano note. The album showcases a thoughtful evolution of their signature sound, offering a reflective soundtrack for both longtime fans and new listeners. This album demonstrates a band comfortable in its musical maturity, resonating with the contemplative themes of aging and legacy.

Review: It's now 25 years since Echo and the Bunnymen reformed (the Liverpool-born band initially disbanded in 1993) and recorded 'Evergreen', their seventh studio album. While reviews were mixed at the time, there's no doubt that it's as jangly, timeless-sounding and sonically gorgeous as any of their more acclaimed albums of the '80s and early '90s. Given that it was released at the height of 'Britpop' (Liam Gallagher provided backing vocals on 'Nothing Lasts Forever', a by-product of Oasis recording in the studio next-door), it's sound is far baggier, looser and warmer than much of the music being made by their younger rivals. On this expanded anniversary edition, the original (if remastered) set is joined by a disc of live recordings, both from their own shows and promotional radio sessions, all of which were laid to tape between 1997 and '99.

Review: Echo & The Bunnymen came back with renewed vigour when they reformed in 1997 and recorded Evergreen. The album was headed up by 'Nothing Lasts Forever', which lodged in the UK's musical psyche as the Britpop wave receded and everyone was craving a little more maturity in their indie bands. 25 years on, the album ranks as of the band's finest, as vital to their story as the classic 80s records, and it's a welcome treat to see it pressed up once again, on fetching white vinyl with a yolky centre, no less.

Review: 25 years have now passed since Liverpool indie mainstays Echo & The Bunnymen released their eighth studio album, a set recorded with the assistance of an impressive array of session musicians (including Fun Lovin' Criminals and members of the London Metropolitan Orchestra) following the departure of bassist Les Pattison. The band has decided to mark the occasion by serving up an expanded, two-disc edition, with the first disc extended via rare and previously unheard alternate mixes and the second boasting contemporaneous live recordings captured at London's Improv Theatre and, more surprisingly, super-club Cream in Liverpool. These extras are uniformly excellent, joining a decidedly melancholic and soulful set that was reviewed positively at the time, but for various reasons did not hit the commercial heights of some of the band's earlier albums.

Review: London never really came close to matchign Manchester in the baggy stakes, but Flowered Up's album A Life With Brian and its unique fusion of indie rock, dance, and psychedelic influences, is as close as it got. Originally released in 1991 and now reissued on limited orange vinyl, the classic 90s record is a vibrant exploration of youth culture and urban life in London with infectious grooves, catchy hooks, and anthemic choruses all present and correct and ready to deliver a dynamic and energetic listen. The album's title track stands out as a definitive highlight with its distinctive sound and lyrical depth, but really all of these tunes offer a nostalgic journey back to the early 90s and celebrates Flowered Up's enduring legacy.

Review: Goldie's timeless remains a drum & bass benchmark, but also one of the most seminal albums in all of electronic music. The man behind it celebrated its anniversary last year with various different projects and now follows that up by handpicking a selection of remixes to take his most treasured material. There is a mix of old school dons and new school talents from all over the world here, each adding their own unique spin. Searchlight, aka Irish drum and bass producers ZeroT and Beta2, are signed exclusively to Goldie's Fallen Tree 1Hundred label and bring some lush jazz and broken beats to 'State of Mind' and later 'Sensual' while Metalheadz tastemaker J Kenzo brings dark, minimalistic and tribal sound to his Tribute remix of 'Jah'. These are just some of the many standouts.

Review: There is no more iconic figure in the world of drum & bass than Goldie. In fact, he has pretty much transitioned to natural treasure in the years since he operated at the genre's bleeding edge as a DJ, label boss of Metalheadz and producer. His Timeless album, now a hard to believe quarter of a century old, was his big breakthrough and took d&b into new realms. The epic title track will always be the benchmark by which all others are judged by the whole flow the record, precision beat work and lush synth sounds have rarely been bettered.

Review: 'Loose Fit' isn't always the first song name that springs to mind when thinking about the Happy Mondays, but the immediately identifiable opiate guitar riff is up there with the band's most memorable and infectious. A highlight of the group's third album, Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches, the track was already dancefloor ready before this pack of re-dos arrived on the scene. We're glad it did, though. Greg Wilson and Che Wilson open the scoring, keeping things thoroughly Manchester and acid-tinged, it's a trip through the blue lights and sweat of a warehouse at 2AM. The Grid's EOE Edit and subsequent Remix take the tempo down and the atmosphere deeper, almost druggier if that could humanly be possible given the wider context here. Topped off with a post-club overture in the form of the epic downbeat Perfecto version, and you might want to stick it in the shopping cart now.

It is an official bootleg edition because the album itself was never made available on vinyl back when it was first released back in 2003 and it also features mash ups like 'Begin To Spin Me Round' (Dannnii vs Dead or Alive) and 'Don't Wanna Lose This Groove' (Dannii vs Madonna). A collector's piece for sure for those looking to bring some playful pop perfection into their lives.

Review: Northside courted controversy in more ways than one. Emerging from North Manchester in 1989, cynics were quick to point out their glaring sonic similarities to other Manchester groups, not least The Stone Roses, while the BBC, among others, moved even faster to ban lead single 'Shall We Take A Trip' due to its copious drug references, especially LSD. Nevertheless, the music itself was of a high standard, if led by others, and that quality meant the lead track broke into the Top 50 singles chart despite its lack of radio play. Produced by Ian Broudie, the album would produce one more track that made a chart impact - 'My Rising Star', which reached 32 and stayed in the league table for seven weeks - while as an LP the package peaked at number 19. Victims of circumstances, a follow up record was planned but the collapse of Factory Records in 1992 put an end to that, with the group disbanding shortly after.

Review: A double CD celebrating the iconic award-winning UK electronic duo's 30th birthday, featuring reworks and remixes from the deep Orbital discography, as well as the well-known live improvisation tracks, featuring techno, acid house and electro contemporaries such as ANNA, Eli Brown and Shanti Celeste to name a few. With the actual 30th birthday delayed by the pandemic the duo concocted a physical compilation release with highlights all over the track list, especially Shanti Celeste's rendition of 'Are We Here?' and Eli Brown's update of the classic track 'Chime', lending the track more traditional house sensibilities. You can even find Professor Stephen Hawking lending vocals on CD1s hardcore techno banger 'Where is it Going?'. This compilation is a one stop shop for fans of Orbital's three-decade career, and the perfect starting point for those unfamiliar.

Review: You'd be hard-pushed to think of a band as synonymous with the evolution of electronic music over the last 30+ yeas as Orbital. The famous Hartnoll brothers are as iconic for their famous head torches, stage designs and live shows as they are their timeless music. Their new studio album Optical Delusion arrives in early 2023 and of course, comes with an extensive UK tour to back it up. This is the pair's 10th studio album overall and has already been teased by some useful singles. Rave, techno, trance and breaks all colour the grooves of this new long player.

Review: After the 30 Something retrospective that landed during 2022, comes a new Orbital album proper, Optical Delusion, set to be accompanied by a busy summer of gig and festival dates by the looks of it. The album's taster single 'Dirty Rat' was a corker, too, full of post-Brexit/Boris bile and a biting vocal from Sleaford Mods frontman Jason Williamson, not to mention some striking Orbital musical trademarks. It could well point the way forward for more interesting collaborations - perhaps taking a leaf out of Leftfield's book - on the album, though only time will tell. Either way, a serious portion of new material from one of the dance world's most enduring and best loved acts will be feverishly anticipated.

Review: Orbital remain titans of the global electronic scene which is no doubt why their self-titled album from 1991 now gets mastered and reissued for this year's Record Store Day. A pioneering work in electronic music, this landmark debut is a rich world of driving drums, hypnotic melodies, and intricate soundscapes. From the propulsive energy of the seminal 'Chime' to the dreamy ambience of 'Belfast,' each track showcases the duo's mastery of rhythm and texture. Orbital's use of innovative sampling techniques and atmospheric synths creates a distinct sonic universe that still stands them apart and helps make this a timeless classic that has influenced generations of electronic artists ever since.

Featuring the hits 'Belfast' and 'Chime', this important piece of electronic music gets some loving attention in the form of being remastered for the first time since release. But that's not the only thing - this CD edition also comes with a bonus CD featuring rarities and remixes from the time. What better way to celebrate 25 years of this amazing band and its cherished history for their role in helping create the sound of techno.

Review: Originally released in 1991 when most music journalists believed it was impossible to release a good dance album, Orbital's eponymous debut album remains one of the most significant sets of its' time - proof that techno artists (as the Hartnoll brothers were referred to at the time) can make killer full-length excursions. Here the album returns in freshly remastered form, via a superb spruce-up job that makes it sound heavier and more sonically refined than ever before. The closing three-track suite of 'Chime (Live)', 'Midnight (Live)' and 'Belfast' remains unbeatable, but there's plenty of sonic brilliance elsewhere across the album - not least the epic (and constantly changing) 'Desert Storm', the saucer-eyed, piano-sporting bounce of 'Fahrenheit 303' and the bleep-influenced excellence of 'Steel Cube Idolatry'.

Review: London Records has announced a deluxe reissue of Orbital's iconic debut album, affectionately known as the Green Album. Originally released in 1991, it straddled the line between rave and ambient techno, featuring timeless tracks like 'Chime', 'Belfast,' and the Butthole Surfers-sampling 'Satan.' Now, those tracks are considered cornerstones of the early UK techno movement. This 4 disc CD set offers the most comprehensive experience, with the original album on disc one and a treasure trove of Green Album-era B-sides, remixes, and alternative versions on discs two and three. Disc four treats fans to two live sets from 1991/92, sourced from the band's soundboard recordings. Wrapped in a 12" box, the deluxe edition includes reprinted flyers from the era and a lavish 60-page hardback book chronicling the Green Album's story, complete with new notes and a track-by-track analysis by Phil and Paul Hartnoll. This reissue is a must-have for Orbital fans and electronic music aficionados alike, offering a comprehensive exploration of a seminal album's legacy.

Belfast Revisited would be one way to describe it, taking some of the classic and unmistakable elements of that anthem and turning it into something new. First and foremost freshness comes with the spoken word addition - a thoroughly positive, passionate and amorous declaration of unending love that could feel jarring depending on whether you always felt 'Belfast' was reflective and slightly melancholy, or not. Gone too are the breaks, replaced now by stadium-sized four-to-the-floor turning what was once the end of the night walking home at dawn into something that sounds way more 11PM at the concert.

Review: The Redskins released just one studio album, their well received debut Neither Washington Nor Moscow in 1986. It came on London Records and now for the very first time since the first time, it reappears on vinyl and CD with new sleeve notes by bassist Martin Hewes. The album came just two years after the band formed but already their soulful songs were packed with passion and political undertones as a result of the band all being members of the Socialist Workers Party. Highlights include 'Bring It Down! (This Insane Thing)' which was the band's only Top 40 hit. The band split the same year this was rebased.
