Review: Aside from Coldcut's incredible 'Journeys By DJ' mix, we can think of few mix albums that have been quite as celebrated as Soulwax's 2002 outing as 2ManyDJs, 'As Heard on Radio Soulwax Part 2'. While of its time in terms of some of the track selections - it was the era of fuzzy electro-house and electroclash - the album's genius lies in its' breathlessly brilliant eclecticism and the no-holds-barred, party-starting insanity that marked out the Belgian duo's DJ sets at the time. Out of print for many years but now back in stores in limited quantities to mark its 20th birthday, the mix remains a peerless advert for creative DJing, with the Dewaele brothers giddily mashing together acapellas, tracks, grooves and song snippets in a breathlessly brilliant, endlessly entertaining way. If you missed it first time around, you need this edition in your life.

Review: Are there many mixes as seminal as this one? When Soulwax adopted their 2 Many DJs alias for the landmark As Heard On Radio Soulwax series, they heralded a new era of genre-hopping, headsy blending that was fun and fearless in equal measure. It's absolutely of its time, capturing the electroclash zeitgeist and throwing in crowd-pleasing pop nous without diluting the product, and quite simply Pt 2 is one of the best party sets you're ever likely to hear. Released in 2002 and sounding as fresh and inspired as it did 20 years ago, this is an essential item for anyone who takes the art of the mash-up seriously.

A strikingly poignant and textured set of new recordings, the new LP immediately draws listeners into the simple and endearing vision of Angus and Julia Stone's world; this is a cloaked, atmopsheric Aussie folk album that flaunts the couple's talents in utmost equal measure. Cape Forestier is also a self-described exercise in recognising "how humans choose to treat each other, love each other, and make promises to build something beautiful together." By that, they mean marriage: Cape Forestier's ear for sentiment knows few bounds, with stripped-back, bridal-gowned romances like 'The Wedding Song' commanding an adept ear for candid space and finger-plucking nostalgisms.

This set includes the remastered Controlling Crowds I-III and IV, along with a bonus LP featuring seven previously unreleased tracks. The package is enriched by a 24-page booklet filled with extensive notes, unseen photos and contemporary band interviews. The album marked a significant return for the band, melding their classic trip hoppy sound with elements of alternative rock and progressive influences. While the electronic ambiance prevails, tracks like 'Bullets', 'Quiet Time' and 'Razed To The Ground' evoke nostalgia for their early work, showcasing the return of vocalist Rosko John. Archive skillfully navigated through genres, infusing jazzy undertones and soulful melodies, particularly evident in 'Collapse/Collide'. Despite their stylistic shifts over the years, Controlling Crowds felt both accessible and cohesive, representing a harmonious blend of their past and present. The album proved that Archive could still captivate audiences with their intricate soundscapes, reinforcing its status as some of their best work.

Don't be confused by the LP's normative categorisation as "indie rock"; deft listeners can hear everything from reggae to neo-soul in this one, flaunting the pair's impressive musical education going into its making.

Review: Second time around for the Bees' terrific debut album, Sunshine Hit Me, which wowed critics and buyers alike on its initial release way back in 2001. The epitome of a surprise hit with admirably DIY roots - the duo behind it, Paul Butler and Aaron Fletcher, famously recorded it in a limited home studio built in the back garden of a residential house on the Isle of Wight - the album has lost none of its allure all these years on. Woozy, summery and lo-fi, with hazy horns and glassy-eyed vocals rising above backing tracks that variously doff a cap to soul, rocksteady, ska, 1960s dream pop, psychedelia and a wealth of subtle global musical influences, Sunshine Hit Me is a warming, smile-inducing treat. This edition also boasts a sextet of bonus cuts, which seem to be a mixture of B-sides and tracks plucked from the pair's archives.

Review: Bohren and Der Club of Gore has always been one of Germany's most intriguing and out there bands - a group rooted in grindcore and doom metal whose hard-to-pigeonhole output draws on a myriad of intriguing influences outside those intense styles. "Patchouli Blue", their tenth studio set since forming in 1992, is another moody and atmospheric gem: a challenging and experimental set that pits angst-ridden guitar textures against hallucinatory, David Lynch style cinematic sounds, hypnotic electronics and smoky, off-kilter jazz expressions. It's not a great departure from their previous albums, but when your sound is so distinctive - and inspired for that matter - why tear up the (Patchouli) blueprint?

Review: In recent months, PIAS has re-released numerous albums from Bohren & Der Club Of Gore, a cult post-hardcore band that found fame by developing their own distinctive brand of "doom-ridden jazz music". The latest album to get the reissue treatment is 2005's Geisterfaust. It originally appeared three years after Black Earth, a macabre and unsettling full-length that remains their most celebrated work. The five epic tracks that make up Geisterfaust are a little lighter in tone, though still thoroughly absorbing and cloaked in the band's usual hazy atmospheres. At times the music tends towards the melancholic, with 20-minute opener "Zeigefinger" offering a near perfect blend of slowly evolving ambient jazz motifs and foreboding drum hits.

Review: Belgian jazz singer Melanie Di Biasio first came to light around 2007 on Igloo, but she's since fostered a steady relationship with indie giants [PIAS] which has resulted in two subsequent albums, No Deal and Lilies. After a six-year gap, she returns with a new set which finds her edging into intriguing new territory. Il Viaggio is framed as 'a quest for musical, physical, and spiritual renewal, born from an emotional memory awakened'. Make of that what you will, but the music contained within finds her voice framed by a broad spectrum of sonics as she leads us through two distinct halves across two discs - Lay Your Ear To The Rail and The Chaos Azure.

Review: What can you say about this amazing album that has not been said before?! Originally released in 1996 and quickly becoming one of the most important pieces in the history of sampled music, its legacy continues to grow while Shadow remains the archetypal example of a crate digging producer. Everything from jazz, spoken word, hip-hop and more was sampled into this cornucopia of sound - in many ways the zenith of the impressive output of James Lavelle's revered Mo''Wax label - and you wouldn't be surprised if it ended up in the Smithsonian for what it has accomplished and meant to the scene.

Review: For their sixth full length album 'Violence', melancholic Birmingham alt-rockers Editors have adopted a grander synth-pop sound to frame their typically dark songwriting in. This change in direction comes from collaborating with the album's producer Leo Abraham and composer Blank Mass, who helped the band hone their electronic craft. The songwriting pairs grandiose stadium riffs with assertive synth-work; 'Hallelujah (So Low)' goes straight for the jugular with fat synth leads and lo-fi drums, and the chorus of lead single 'Magazine' balances sections of punchy electronic swagger with singalong melodic euphoria. On 'No Sound But The Wind', there's a glimpse of an earlier Editors sound, more atmospheric and spacious than the tracks that surround it - unsurprising as it's a song the band first debuted back at Glastonbury 2008 and have been re-working since. Following 2015's somewhat confused 'In Dream', Editors sound reinvigorated and confident in the direction 'Violence' is taking them in.

Review: Easily outgrowing the original perception of them as stadium-indie bringers of gloom, Editors have evolved steadily with each record, and seemingly found themselves increasingly more comfortable each turn along the way. 'In Dream', the fifth from the Birmingham outfit, finds them expanding on the widescreen sweep of their sound, experimenting further with electronics, yet still maintaining a core of intimacy and introspection that has become their trademark. Thus, perversely, what may be their darkest record to date is also their most uplifting, with indelible songwriting, synth filigree and nocturnal atmospherics colliding to provide a black-clad tour de force.

Review: Melbourne's Highschool (Luke Scott, Rory Trobbiani) continue to ride the wave of nostalgic post-punk, following an aesthetic pattern that has defined their work at least since 2020's initial run of singles - theirs is singular in its embrace of lo-fi and an unusual mixing approach, through which the lyrical content only barely pokes through a half-remembered smog (we love it). Now, 'Accelerator' comes as their first mini-album/EP, their second diversion via PIAS; the five-tracker meditates on everything from melancholic summer months ('August 19') to fantasy recollections ('She Took You To Narnia') to UFO religions ('Heaven's Gate'), nailing something between the washed-out but no less festival-ready riffs of Beach House and the laconic edge of Double Virgo.

Review: Kerala Dust are an indietronica trio hailing from Berlin, and their upcoming album 'Violet Drive' is rightly described by them as a 'pan-European dream'. Recorded between Berlin and a remote Swiss Alpine studio, this is a funky, dark and sumptuous vocal dance project, replete with an overarching nighttime swing and glossy shimmer.
