  2. Time Passing
Review: As both a member of Glenn Underground's Strictly Jaz Unit crew and as a solo artist, Vick Lavender has made some mighty fine deep house in his time. Further proof arrives via this fine two-tracker, which marks the veteran producer's first outing on Alex Attias' Visions Inc label. Probably the pick of the pair is superb A-side "Beautiful Lie", where guest singer D Millz adds a soulful vocal to a glorious bed of dreamy chords, jaunty jazz-funk bass, carnival-friendly drums and colourful synth solos. Lavender continues on a similar theme with flipside "Time Passing", whose loose-limbed broken house drums recall the work of Osunlade. Add in some killer chords, jazzy electric piano solos and squelchy bass, and you have something that Ron Trent would be proud of.

Review: For the latest "45" in the Dusty Donuts series of edits and mash ups, the Berlin-based crew has turned to long-time crew member Jim Dunloop, a jazz-trained pianist-turned-producer best known for his work alongside Marc Hype. He begins with "Spirit De Rio", a wonderfully warm, head-nodding, hip-hop style revision of a summery-sounding old samba gem rich in dewy-eyed female vocals and glistening guitars. Long-time friend, and occasional collaborator Grizzly Adams lends a hand on flipside cut "Different Sweetnuts", a deep and woozy revision of a fragile, female-fronted soul number that wraps drowsy elements from the pair's source material around a bass-heavy beat.

Review: In The Groove Records regulars Oden & Fatzo have a "Spaceship For Sale", so they've offered up this musical advertisement to tempt us into a purchase. Despite the promise of intergalactic travel, the asking price is surprisingly reasonable. Musically, there's much to admire throughout, from the melodious, far-sighted sci-fi bounce of classic tech-house opener "Spaceship For Sale", to the rushing, acid-flecked bubbliness of "69 Party Boys", whose electric piano-laden breakdown is simply stunning. Elsewhere, Fabe's "68 Remix" of that track gives it a delicious, UK garage-influenced swing, while "Casinomania" strikes a near perfect balance between chunky, low-end, bass-heavy bounce and picturesque, melodic bliss.

Review: On his first outing for G.A.M.M some years back, Jamie 3:26 channelled the spirit of the late, great Ron Hardy on two druggy, drum machine-driven reworks that were more epic than a back-to-back screening of Ben Hur and seven-hour documentary "OJ: Made In America".This time round he's in an even more celebratory mood, first rearranging a spiralling chunk of bscure disco-funk hedonism rich in mind-altering solos, spacey synth noises and driving drums (killer A-side "Lil Sista"). Over on side B he unleashes even more energy via a bass-heavy, organ and synth-rich disco workout that he's smartly looped, rearranged and extended for heightened dancefloor pleasure. Like the rest of his re-edit output, both tracks are club-focused fire!

  1. I Got It Funky (Jim Sharp edit)

Review: Mash-up maestro, bootleg remix king and talented beat-maker Jim Sharp launched the Soul By The Pound label last year to offer up sneaky re-edits of classic soul and funk jams from the '60s and '70s. Here he finally delivers the imprint's second-single, delivering some Blaxploitation-era goodness that should tickle the fancy of all those who like their funk energetic and enthusiastic. A-side "I Got It Funky" more than lives up to its name, with call-and-response vocals, wah-wah guitars, tasty Hammond licks and rising horns riding a snappy, breakbeat-driven groove. He switches focus a little on flipside "Trippin' Out", adding bouncy hip-hop beats to a dewy-eyed, string-laden slab of Curtis Mayfield style soul.

Review: We're rather excited by the prospect of Blue Note's forthcoming "Reimagined" compilation, which sees a variety of rising stars from the UK's jazz, soul and R&B scenes delivering new interpretations of classic cuts from the legendary jazz label's vast back catalogue. This teaser single features two of the more striking and talked-about covers. Jorja Smith takes on St Germain's early noughties jazz-house masterpiece "Rose Rouge", brilliantly re-imagining it as a deep, fluid and dreamy nu-jazz number rich in authentic instrumentation, shimmering electronics and effortlessly soulful vocals. It's genuinely brilliant. Over on the flip, the Ezra Project takes on Wayne Shorter's "Footprints", somehow mixing up hip-hop, post-bop jazz, funk and Afrobeat to create a stunning new interpretation. There aren't many of these around, so act fast to avoid disappointment.

His A-side "Lots of Love Remix" is particularly strong, offering a rolling, musically rich reconstruction that adds a little more contemporary low-end pressure while showcasing the original version's superb vocals by spreading it out, giving the punchy disco-funk horns, killer bassline and tasty instrument solos time to work its magic. Over on Side B, he offers up an instrumental version of the same mix in which soaring disco strings provide a focal point and push the track forwards towards a suitable celebratory conclusion.

Review: In his career to date, Jim Sharp has proved to be one of the bootleg remix and mash-up scene's smartest and most successful producers - a man capable of brilliantly breathing new life into a string of familiar favourites. He's at it again here, offering up fresh reconstructions of N.W.A's gangster rap classic "F*ck Tha Police". The killer flip is his A-side "Main Mix", in which he places the L.A crew's iconic acapella over a jumpy, party starting hip-hop beat rich in sampled short funk guitar riffs, snare and kick-heavy drums, James Brown style yelps and tight scratches. It's a great beat - so good, in fact, that the flipside instrumental mix is equally as essential as the club-rocking vocal version.

Review: Nothing But Nice co-founder James Andrew (AKA rising star James Eggington) impressed us greatly with his debut EP, "Thinking Backwards", so hopes are high for this prompt follow-up. Happily, we can confirm that it's another excellent collection of cuts, with Eggington jogging between breakbeat-driven, bleep-laden deep tech-house (bustling and ear-catching opener "New Synth, Who Dis?"), bass-heavy, acid-flecked, intergalactic rollers (the surging, funk-fuelled brilliance of "Igor Hits The D Floor"), sub-bass powered, wide-eyed deep house bliss ("Mission of Vision") and sparkling, outer-space broken beat/sci-fi techno fusion (undoubted EP highlight "Out With The In"). Eggington is clearly in fine form right now and will be a producer to watch in the months and years ahead.

Review: The second split release from fast-rising Belgian label The Void Project boasts tracks from Traffic co-founder Bodin and sometime Ext and Entity London artist Alec Falconer. The latter begins by offering a nod towards his work with UKG revivalists Phone Traxx on the aptly titled - and really rather good - "Wobble Roller", before peppering a chunky bassline and crunchy house drums with low-register organ stabs and occasional breakbeat blasts on "Bounce". Over on side B Traffic Records co-founder Bodin takes over and offers up two tracks that make the most of the Roland TB-303 (or at least something that sounds like it). "Sluga" is a bona-fide jacker with deep organ riffs, while "Hopez" is a snappier affair powered forward by a seriously squelchy bassline.

We'll hear more about what they have in store in the weeks and months ahead, but first the Swedish stable has decided to offer up something suitably special: a pair of previously unreleased edits from the king of the rusty scalpel rearrangement, Danny Krivit AKA Mr K. If it's percussion you're after, we'd heartily recommend insatiable A-side "Batutastica", a riotous revision of a drum-heavy Brazilian batacuda workout that's little more than densely layered waves of sweaty, carnival-ready percussion. It's an absolute dancefloor beast, as is the similarly hectic, intense and celebratory flipside drum workout, "Jungle". In a word: essential!

Review: Further proof of the current rude health of Paris's deep house scene arrives in the shape of another rock solid EP from prolific producer Mickael Jeanerret, AKA Janeret. The Bright E.P more than lives up to its' name, with the title track delivering a near perfect blend of bushy-eyed beats, ethereal pads, deep space riffs and fluttering, manipulated vocal samples. The EP's other original cut, "Rear", boasts similarly drifting chords, but also a tech-tinged beat pattern that's as bold and funky as they come. Rising star Varhat does a terrific job remixing "Bright", retaining Jeanerret's dub techno-inspired textures, whilst adding his own Syclops-inspired synth bassline.

  4. Mid Air - "Ease Out" (The Revenge edit)
Review: If you're looking for some high-grade, tried-and-tested disco and house fare, we'd strongly advise grabbing this second vinyl sampler celebrating 30 years of Dave Lee AKA Joey Negro's popular Z Records imprint. It begins with the insatiably sweaty disco-house hedonism of Doug Willis's down-low 2014 classic "Crystal Lover" - which, surprisingly, has never appeared on vinyl before in this original mix form - and ends with the Revenge's loopy, sort-after, synth-fired re-edit of Mid Air's early '80s disco-boogie classic "Ease Out". In between you'll find Lee's 2015 "JN Revival Mix" of his classic early '90s U.S garage/soulful house jam "Do What You Feel", and the similarly inclined and deliciously sunny "City Connection Mix" of Lee and the Sunburst Band's Angela Johnson-voiced "Only Time Will Tell". As the old cliche goes, this is "all killer, no filler".

Review: Earlier this summer, mash-up maestro DJ Soopasoul raised our temperatures by layering Wu-Tang Clan vocals over a chunky, funk-fuelled backing track crafted from snippets of James Brown jams. He called it "Sex Cream", and now he's back with more sickly-sweet goodness based around the down-low greatness of the Godfather of Soul. A-side "More Sex Cream (Crooklyn Style)" delivers a similar-sounding JB-inspired beat, this time peppered with rhymes from "Crooklyn", the debut single from Masta Ace, Special Ed and Buckshot's short-lived Crooklyn Dodgers project. It works wonderfully, of course, as does the flipside instrumental version. Bare party-starting fun for funk-loving hip-hop heads!

Review: Here's something to stir the hearts of all fans of Mika Vainio and Ilpo Vaisanen's Panasonic/Pansonic project: a trio of long-lost remixes that were created, but for some reason never released, way back in 1996. Side A boasts an epic revision from long-serving Newcastle experimentalists Zoviet France, who turn an untitled Panasonic production into a ghostly trip through hypnotic, minimalist techno territory - all unearthly aural textures, drifting synth sounds and hazy, locked-in drums. Over on side B there's a pair of rare remix outings from the sadly departed Bryn Jones AKA Muslimgauze. He first wraps vocal sounds and twisted electronics around a raw analogue techno groove, before offering up one of his impeccable experimental ambient dub workouts. Of the two, this is undoubtedly the most mesmerising.

Review: 2020 marks two decades since Cyril Etienne des Rosaies released his first record as DJ Deep. In that time, he's barely put a foot wrong, developing a deliciously warm, spacey and tactile brand of deep house that always hits the spot. His latest single - his fourth on the Deep Moments imprint he established two years ago - is typically luscious. In its original form, "Happy People" is emotive and accessible, with waves of echoing sci-fi synth sounds and glassy-eyed electronic motifs rising and falling above a hypnotic late-night groove. He offers up a chunkier and even more spaced out "Dub Mix" that's every bit as alluring, before rising star Janeret adds a little purist tech-house swing while wrapping a squeezable synth bassline in impeccable, sunrise-ready chords.

The arrival of the Airier EP on Cabaret Recordings - a label he co-founded - is therefore cause for celebration. The title track, in particular, is rather wonderful. It's warm, sumptuous and spacey, with cascading electronics, disconnected vocal samples and gently dubbed-out motifs wrapping themselves around a tactile, bass-heavy groove. It's the kind of cut that should appeal to both deep house and tech-house DJs. On the flipside you'll find another deep space shuffler (the rather attractive "Petrichor") and a rolling chunk of micro-house blessed with super-deep chord progressions (the aptly titled "Head Over the Clouds").

Review: Before the recent rise in '90s style psychedelic, ambient-influenced electronic music, one of the only producers offering up this kind of hallucinatory revivalism was Nick Harris AKA A Sagittariun. If truth be told, his productions are still a cut above the rest, as this fine outing on Craigie Knowes proves. The famously cynical (and, we should add, hilarious) Bristolian is in a positive frame of mind on bubbly, melodic opener "Heart Sutra", where a variety of melodic elements spar cheekily atop a rubbery electro beat. "The Soft Machine" sees him introduce some typically tough, mind-altering motifs on a darker and more psychedelic electro workout, while "Interzone" is rush-inducing, sunrise-ready dancefloor straight out of the top drawer.

This must-have EP offers-up one of the album's standout moments, "Unit", a bubbly chunk of psychedelic synth-chug blessed with French spoken word vocals and all manner of sparkling electronic sounds. The peerless original mix comes backed with Italo-disco outfit Mito's outstanding 1983 cover version - a more sprightly and spacey interpretation - as well as a brand-new re-edit of even more druggy and intergalactic "Logic" album track "Clash". Review: REPRESS ALERT: Emotional Rescue continue to explore the fruitful early '90s exploits of The New Morning, a Munich-based crew who took their lead from the Afro-Cosmic scene pioneered in Northern Italy by DJs like Danielle Baldelli and Beppe Loda. On this second installment of spiritually charged, low tempo club killers, you get the chants and percussion of "Riddim Of Inari", tightly looped West African funk of "Mi C'Yaan" and the stunningly evocative "When Will You Come Down?". There's more rolling rhythmic business to be enjoyed on "Picayune" while "Cricket (part II)" amps up the distortion without losing the groove, and then "Ancient Nomads" seals off this volume in style with a slow, hard-slapping beat to get fully entranced too.
