Review: Kendrick Lamar aka. K Dot is hip-hop's all-time crown-bearer for the 2010s. Last time we checked, the same was true for the 2020s too. Bridging both decades came To Pimp A Butterfly, which saw mammoth success upon its 2015 release. Though perhaps prematurely slapped with the "classic" label all too soon (and though this wasn't wrong), one good index of an all-time great album is the prevalence of affectionate initialisms among diehard fans: in no time at all, it became known as "TPAB". The Compton rapper had had a firm social conscience ever since the release of Section 80 and Good Kid, Mad City, and TPAB would continue to restitute the many racial and consumeristic ills of American society; unforgettably, a White House mutiny is depicted on the original front cover. Songs like 'I', 'Sing For Me, I'm Dying Of Thirst', 'King Kunta' and 'Institutionalized' revolutionised rap through every motif from G-funk bounce to freeform jazz. First released in 1993, this record came to consciousness at the same time as it hit the UK albums chart; and we're not surprised it did, for its angelic mixing, creaseless sound, and sophisticated easy listening progressions. Out of the 90s vogue for desirous house, trip-hop and downtempo a-la Everything But The Girl and Lamb came The Beloved with the smash 'Sweet Harmony', but the sweet, vivid breaths and basses of the sinuous 'Lose Yourself In Me' and paradisiacal lounge phonics of 'You've Got Me Thinking' also stand out.

Review: After countless reissues, Stereolab delight fans with their first new album in nearly 15 years, following 2010's Not Music. The French/British band - led by Tim Gane and Lætitia Sadie - are well known for their tendency to lean towards left field, adventurous sonic experiments, but have a wide spectrum and from time to time are not shy in indulging their love of pop with melodies that stick. Lætitia Sadie can sing the phone book, to the level of a Gruff Rhys and on the single 'Aerial Troubles' evokes her Welsh peer. With the band's influence seemingly inextinguishable, chances are the aftermath of this album release will see Stereolab's stock rise massively as they sound like they've hit their stride and not let the long gap between new albums faze them.

Review: The "guitar loop" is not just a staple of modern indie and psychedelic music. It is also an access point to a timeless human necessity: the combo of dexterity and repetition. Without repeatedly using our hands to press notes and catenate chains, we would be nothing but fumbly savages. Loop knew this remarkably well, manually twisting a tight coil around the South London music scene in the late 1970s. This was at the height of the motorik rock scene, which was otherwise largely going on thousands of miles away in Germany: as critics enthused at the time, Loop were the sound of Suicide jamming with the Stooges aboard a spaceship built by Hawkwind and piloted by Can. Described by Reactor as "post-psych, pre-shoegaze" figureheads, 'Twelves' is a priceless rediscovery for electronic rock heads across the (fret, mother)board: compiling across a span of five years, '16 Dreams' and 'Spinning' originate from 1986, while 'Collision' marks their Chapter 22 phase from 1988, and 'Primsma Uber Europa 12' closes the loop in 1991. An early case of sonic cybernetic feedback; viscerally loud, intensive circulations of sound.

Review: Begun in earnest during the COVID-19 pandemic, after the former had remixed the latter's new Radiohead material, Mark Pritchard and Thom Yorke exchanged much of the for their new record Tall Tales remotely. Forerun by new single 'Back In The Game' then 'This Conversation Is Missing Your Voice', the album takes shape as a surreal mythopoesis, warping back in time to 2020's plague, where the former track's hyperreal music video (dir. by Jonathan Zawada) sees a rooftop figure defenestrating art itself amid grotesque figures bearing the worst of a mutant contortionist slice-of-life. Yorke has said that the album was crucial to him, describing the music-making process as "mental."

Review: Amsterdam-based duo Maarten Smeets and Lars Dales - Dam Swindle - offer us their album, Open, prying ajar our otic tract with 14 quixotic tracks. After years of introspection, Open marks a rupture, as the pair break from their preeminent deep house for an even-deeper-down embrace of the lower tempi, with them now incorporating synthwave, hip-house, and ambient elements. A first taster comes with the smoothly lavished 'Girl' with Faye Meana, while 'Bloom' with Joep Beving develops the theme of self-analysis through well-shovelled deep house chords. Still reining in some four-to-the-floor precepts, Dam Swindle have nonetheless presented their most heartfelt and least harried detour to date.

Review: A new compilation from Spiritual Jazz shows the genre's predisposition to thrive despite heavy political oppression, with underworld eminents euphonating their radical music despite a hard immuring behind the Iron Curtain, which represented the gash between East and West during the Cold War. Contemporary jazz and European folk collide on the first of a two-parter record here, reflecting muted but reassuring sonic utterances sounding against oppression, a somewhat unspeakable sentiment whipping across the Eastern Bloc of the 50s and 60s. Vagif Mustafa Zade, an Azerbaijani pianist, and the Manfred Ludwig Sextett, from the same era, are only two such featured artists; they helped push the embrace hard bop and modal, and the boundaries of what was permissible under the regime.

Review: Bennie Maupin's contributions to many a groundbreaking jazz record - Miles Davis's Bitches Brew, Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi and Headhunters, and Marion Brown's Afternoon Of A Georgia Faun - all cemented his long-harked reptutation as an inventive jazz dynamo. His own releases as a bandleader were relatively sparse, but his debut album remains a standout; described by Down Beat in 1975 as "selfless", The Jewel In The Lotus heard Maupin instead focus his instructive efforts on his bandmates, whose one rule, issued by Maupin himself, was to "keep it seamless". You'll mostly hear the chops of musicians closely connected to Hancock's circle from late 1970s New York, where talent beamed and popped like cinders on brimstone.

Naples leans into loose, shuffling rhythms and worn textures, drawing from the fringes of classic house, albeit filtered into its most stripped components. There's a sense of movement throughout - from the swirling low-end of 'Hi Lo' to the playful glitch of 'Bounce' and the fervent tempo of 'Night. Pulsing but unhurried, the album builds a world of soft hallucination and heads-down propulsion, rooted in the club but reaching toward astral realms. Review: Black Loops directs a welters' worth of experience into Always Moving, his debut full-length for Freerange. Far beyond club tools, this is a sensitive elusion of watery neo soul instrumentation and distant broken beat jazz, and we're not surprised in this breath to learn of Black Loops' own background as a drummer. Nor is it any wonder either that such auteur's disco house regals such as Harvey Sutherland, Byron The Aquarius and Berlin vocalist Marlena Dae all appear on the record, through 'CDMX' to the ever so eerie, Erie-downstream deep house of 'Detroit Love Letter'. 'Electrical And LSD' takes after such influences as Metro Area's disco house shimmer, while tracks like 'Pleasure Ride' and 'Good Bye Berlin' further locks down the abiding nighttime tension - that least comparable part of his sound.

Review: It’s been a while since Fila Brazillia’s 1995 album Maim That Tune has been available on vinyl. The announcement of this remastered 30th anniversary edition is therefore very positive news. Their first ‘proper’ studio album (its predecessor, the genuinely brilliant Old Codes, New Chaos, was effectively an expanded collection of earlier singles interspersed with blissful ambient interludes), ‘Maim That Tune’ is a ‘90s downtempo classic that not only features some of the Hull duo’s most beloved tracks – the sublime, tempo-changing deepness of ‘A Zed & Two L’s’, early progressive house number ‘Slacker’ and the head-nodding bliss of ‘Harmonicas Are Shite’ – but also a swathe of equally impactful but lesser-spotted gems (the buzzing ‘6Ft Wasp’, jazzy hip-hop head-nodder ‘Extract of Pienal Gland’ and the string-laden stoner funk of ‘At Home In Space’).

Review: The latest Lindstrom album is so good that he appears to have dispensed with the spell-checker for the copy i but it's always such a terrific pleasure to hear new music from the Norse disco titan that even the most uptight proofreader will surely forgive him. Back in the noughties, he and compatriot Prins Thomas flipped the script with their immaculately crafted take on the meta-disco sound. And though the frequency of Lindstrom's output has slowed over time, the quality of his production retains its magnificent allure. Syrius Syntoms begins with a bang i glistening synths, snappy drums and pristine melodics on 'Crkl' i before taking acidic turns via 'Thousand Island Man' and drifting into dreamland on 'Moo)n'. 'These Are a Few of My Favorite Strings' adds a little NY house bump, with evocative keys and low-end groove, while the feel-good arps and bouncy bass of the title track are vintage Lindstrom i full of kitsch sparkle and joyous main room energy. Top marks.

Review: One of the flagship albums by Aaron Funk aka. Venetian Snares (alongside Songs About Cats, Higgins Ultra Low Track Glue Funk Hits 1972-2006, Winnipeg Is A Frozen Shithole and The Chocolate Wheelchair Album), Rossz Csillag Alatt Szuletett marks itself out in his sonography as a breakcore album which, aside from its lobotomising breaks, features mostly classical strings and brass. Gloomy and melancholic, the album's title translates from Hungarian to "Born Under A Bad Star", i.e. "cursed from birth", and the record transmits a superstitious chain of influence, with track 3 covering Budapest composer Rezso Seress' 'Gloomy Sunday', which was said to have inspired the suicide of the original musician's own girlfriend. Renditions of Mahler, Stravinsky, Paganini, Prokofiev and Edward Elgar all follow in morose but energetic fashion, demonstrating the Canadian IDM artist's quirkily sized collection of drill bits.

Review: Legendary UK indie outfit Suede dropped their Sci-Fi Lullabies album back in in 1997. It was soon established as one of the greatest B-sides compilations ever made and became a fan favourite. The record captured the band’s creative peak while drawing from the Dog Man Star and Coming Up eras with tracks like 'My Insatiable One,' 'The Living Dead' and 'Killing of a Flash Boy' packed with Suede’s romantic melancholy and jagged glamour. All those feature again on this beautifully recreated reissue. The original reached No. 9 on the UK Albums Chart and received critical acclaim for its depth and ambition and this 2025 version features refreshed artwork by longtime collaborator Paul Khera.

Review: Originally released in 1995 and celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, Symbolic would serve as the sixth (and originally intended final) full-length from Floridian death metal pioneers Death. Following on from 1993's Individual Thought Patterns, the work has become highly regarded and often perceived as the band's most intricate and culminative display of their tech-death wizardry, largely due to its use of acoustic and clean guitar tones, dissonance, arpeggios, and "Egyptian" style melodies, while mastermind Chuck Schuldiner would reimagine his guttural bellows in a more gritted teeth shout akin to hardcore punk. With lyrics touching upon topics including political corruption, surveillance and class consciousness, the cerebral messaging married to such intricate, progressive, nigh on unsurpassable musicianship would simultaneously feel like a far cry from the gore-obsessed brutality of old, yet the natural route the legendary act would ultimately take their heady vision.

Review: Stretching across four sides of vinyl, this double LP from Worcestershire-born producer, bandleader and serial collaborator Will Holland traces his journey through transcontinental rhythms and dusty dancefloors. The carefully spaced tracklist opens with JJ Whitefield's deep-thinking 'The Mind Is A Palace', before the record quickly dips into London fusion with The Heliocentrics and Alfa Mist's 'In My Defence'. Dialect's fragmented ambient textures play the foil to Holland's own 'Twang', while JKriv's 'Pifeiro Malandro' evokes smoky Rio funk as filtered through downtown New York. Later on, Frente Cumbiero and a rework of 'Theme From Selva' provide a humid middle section before things sharpen up. Review: In the music business the thinking often goes that first week sales are an indicator of a release's popularity and after that it's downhill from there. Occasionally, however, bands or solo artists write tunes with a pan-generational power to connect. Hugely popular Coventry band The Enemy have done that with the title track to this raucous indie guitar cracker of a debut album - originally released in 2007, and going straight to number one in the UK. 'We'll Live And Die In These Towns' has been adopted by the Coventry City football club as their unofficial anthem and is regularly sung with fervor by fans before matches. There's more emotion emanating from the stands when it's sung than the national anthem. It's a song of the people - as important as Billy Bragg's 'A New England'. This track sits as a high point in a tracklist that's no slouch on rabble-rousing hits throughout and it's a reminder of why The Enemy are a national treasure to so many.

Review: Yet another star slice on Japan's genius jazz label Three Blind Mice, who've now reissued it again here, Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio's Midnight Sugar, originally released in 1974, remains a landmark in Japanese jazz. Led by pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto - and with Hideto Kanai on bass and Tetsujiro Obara on drums - this stilly nighttime masterpiece is a true bask in a lamplit witching hour, nailed in the simple contrast of skeletal, swirling drum-brush playing and distant pianissimo. With striking renditions of jazz standards, including 'I'm A Fool To Want You' and 'The Nearness Of You,' where Yamamoto's delicate phrasing shines; the record's appeal rests in the trio's evident chemistry and Yamamoto's expressive yet precise touch.

Review: Of all the terms here, the one used at the time was most frequently new rave and it would be an unthinkable scene without the Klaxons, so it's great to see them make the tracklist, alongside top tier like-minded acts. Bloc Party are one of the best indie bands to remix ever and the version of their best song 'Banquet' is a banger. Elsewhere, LCD Soundsystem's most catchy number 'Tribulations' is a dead cert in terms of getting people off their seats. One of the hyped bands of the era who deserve recognition are We Have Band and it's a shrewd move to include them. Electroclash heroes Fischerspooner had signed to Minsitry of Sound for L2 million around the time 'Emerge' came out and were easily one of the hottest dance acts around, and make for another cracking addition to this seriously high quality retrospective.

Review: James "Baby Huey" Ramey's sole album remains a striking reflection of his talent and untimely passing. The Chicago-born soul singer, best known for his work with Baby Huey & the Babysitters, was in the midst of recording his debut when he tragically died from a heart attack in 1970 at just 26. The resulting albumiunfinished at the time of his deathiwas later completed by producer Curtis Mayfield and released posthumously in 1971. A blend of psychedelic soul, funk and rock, the album's standout moments include a sprawling, otherworldly take on Sam Cooke's 'A Change Is Gonna Come' and the deeply emotive 'Hard Times', which later found its way into the lexicon of hip-hop, sampled by the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, Ghostface Killah, and Ice Cube. The work's raw energy and emotive performances give it a timeless quality, a feeling of tragic grandeur heightened by Ramey's powerful vocal presence. Tracks like 'Mama Get Yourself Together' and 'One Dragon Two Dragon' are emblematic of the freewheeling creativity of 70s soul, blending jazz-inflected structures with funk grooves that seem to stretch toward an unknown, future-facing horizon. Despite its unfinished nature, it is an album that never feels incomplete, embodying a voice and vision that remains eternal in its influence. From his time performing around Chicago to his collaboration with Mayfield, Baby Huey's legacy continues to reverberate across generations.

Review: After a much publicised and controversial court trial and abrupt acquittal, Young Thug is back with a full and comprehensive look back on the three mixtapes he released between 2015 and 2016, the collection of which were instrumental in shaping said Thugger's sound, and solidifying his now crown-jewel-guarded place in hip-hop. "Slime" in the Thug lexicography refers to ideas of loyalty and brotherhood, and is a word used within the rapper's own YSL collective and beyond; it recalls the slang phrase "my slime". And much like the amorphous goo that sounds to drip off each of these blasphemously sick beats, each consecutive mixtape tracks a continual honing and reshaping of his sound. With no major label restrictions, and with an unpolished non-veneer, these tunes were the real underground rap baggies that made Thugger's fame. It's only right that they each see a distinct splatter record, housed in a whopper box set.

Review: Miami-born and raised, synth-pop duo Magdalena Bay relocated to Los Angeles and have been blazing a trail with their self-produced music towards the top of the pop world. To celebrate the beguiling aura of their second album, released in August 2024, there's a limited repress of it in a stunning yet chaotic and artsy clear blue. Stacked with bangers, including the ethereal disco single 'Image' and the cosmic electropop epic 'Death & Romance' - which recalls Destiny's Child as much as it does Jean Michel Jarre - Magdalena Bay are clearly brimming with ideas. That they then know how to package these ideas with a cohesive visual aesthetic helps them hugely on their way and at the pace they're going creatively, there's seemingly a glorious road ahead.

Review: By 2004, Harold Budd was a sufferer of chronic "no, really, this is my final album" syndrome; he had claimed Avalon Sutra as his artistic curtain call, which would reach its apotheotic height under the David Sylvian and his label Samadhisound. The reality was that Budd did go on to record many another album, including a Philip Glass tribute and a solo piano album, Perhaps (2007). But this, his intended retirement, was probably his most interesting. Florid neo-noir soundscapes - mured behind soft-saturated limits of sax and trellised piano - glean an unusual sense of a Lynchian underside to domesticity and normality. A soundtrack to a part-corrupted life, this "Arabesque" record transitions into utter serenity by the time of 'Little Heart', whose faint triangles and swelling pads nail an impure and contradictory sense of alterity, resignation and peace.
