Review: By 2004, Harold Budd was a sufferer of chronic "no, really, this is my final album" syndrome; he had claimed Avalon Sutra as his artistic curtain call, which would reach its apotheotic height under the David Sylvian and his label Samadhisound. The reality was that Budd did go on to record many another album, including a Philip Glass tribute and a solo piano album, Perhaps (2007). But this, his intended retirement, was probably his most interesting. Florid neo-noir soundscapes - mured behind soft-saturated limits of sax and trellised piano - glean an unusual sense of a Lynchian underside to domesticity and normality. A soundtrack to a part-corrupted life, this "Arabesque" record transitions into utter serenity by the time of 'Little Heart', whose faint triangles and swelling pads nail an impure and contradictory sense of alterity, resignation and peace.

Review: Originally conceived as a suite for electronics and ensemble but then abandoned, the latest from Vancouver-based ambient producer Scott Morgan aka Loscil sees him restructure, remix and transform the ashes of it into something newian album that feels like a smouldering landscape, its textures layered with both loss and rebirth. Loscil's Lake Fire is an album born from destruction and reinvention. Thematically, Lake Fire draws inspiration from a road trip into the mountains Morgan took to mark his personal half-century milestone. eventually surrounded by wildfires and thick smoke, and that experience seeps into the album's DNA, shaping its dense, hazy atmospheres. The title itself reflects a haunting ironyiforest fires often take their names from nearby lakes, a stark juxtaposition of destruction and serenity. The album unfolds like a shifting mist. 'Spark' is dynamic and drenched in deep chords that ripple through a cloudy haze. 'Arrhythmia' carries a heavy build, swelling with intensity before receding into silence. These pieces, along with the rest of the album, feel like echoes from another worldidistant yet deeply resonant. Released on Kranky, which has long been a home and supporter of his music, Lake Fire is another great example at Morgan's ability to craft ambient soundscapes that are both vast and intimate. It's a hypnotic listen and an exploration of impermanence and transformation wrapped in a thick sonic fog.

Review: Of all the terms here, the one used at the time was most frequently new rave and it would be an unthinkable scene without the Klaxons, so it's great to see them make the tracklist, alongside top tier like-minded acts. Bloc Party are one of the best indie bands to remix ever and the version of their best song 'Banquet' is a banger. Elsewhere, LCD Soundsystem's most catchy number 'Tribulations' is a dead cert in terms of getting people off their seats. One of the hyped bands of the era who deserve recognition are We Have Band and it's a shrewd move to include them. Electroclash heroes Fischerspooner had signed to Minsitry of Sound for L2 million around the time 'Emerge' came out and were easily one of the hottest dance acts around, and make for another cracking addition to this seriously high quality retrospective.

Review: After a much publicised and controversial court trial and abrupt acquittal, Young Thug is back with a full and comprehensive look back on the three mixtapes he released between 2015 and 2016, the collection of which were instrumental in shaping said Thugger's sound, and solidifying his now crown-jewel-guarded place in hip-hop. "Slime" in the Thug lexicography refers to ideas of loyalty and brotherhood, and is a word used within the rapper's own YSL collective and beyond; it recalls the slang phrase "my slime". And much like the amorphous goo that sounds to drip off each of these blasphemously sick beats, each consecutive mixtape tracks a continual honing and reshaping of his sound. With no major label restrictions, and with an unpolished non-veneer, these tunes were the real underground rap baggies that made Thugger's fame. Review: After 32 years promoting a distinctive blend of off-kilter Cologne techno, mind-altering minimalism, ambient pop and trippy tech-house, Kompakt Records has notched up 499 releases. It makes sense, then, that the long-serving German label would be keen to mark release number 500 with something suitably special. They’ve done just that, offering up a lovingly produced box set that does a fantastic job of celebrating the imprint’s journey to date. There are five, differently coloured discs packed with (mostly edited) versions of lesser-known early gems and Kompakt classics, plus a bonus picture disc containing 50 locked grooves, and a 100-page, 10-inch hardback book telling the label’s story to date. It’s an incredible product all told, and one that will surely cement Kompakt’s status as one of European electronic music’s most admired and significant imprints.

Review: Yorkshire cult icons New Model Army were never ones to shy away from heavy themes. The Bradford rockers had a knack for poetic depictions of war that few possess: “They hardly know their sacred mother tongue but they know their duty / To defend the flag hanging limp and bloody above the village church,” is sung on ‘Here Comes The War’. When they first released this cracking guitar-driven album via Epic in 1993, they probably hoped the words to this single wouldn't be just as relevant now as they were then, but with wars raging it's sadly the case. New Model Army were mavericks in their day and sticking to their guns as opposed to bending to the whims of fashion has made them more enduring than they would possibly have been otherwise. A truly legendary band deserving of all the plaudits they can get.

Review: Formed in the early 80s and later based in Weston-super-Mare, Coil remain one of the UK’s most enigmatic experimental outfits—combining ambient electronics, industrial rhythm and spoken-word surrealism into something ritualistic and deeply unclassifiable. This 2xLP reissue revives their final studio work, first issued in incomplete CD-R form in 2004 before being completed by Peter Christopherson and Danny Hyde in 2006 following the death of Jhonn Balance. Compared to the sprawling mysticism of their earlier catalogue, these tracks are leaner, sharper—shaped by the influence of live performance and Christopherson’s then-new fascination with digital production. ‘The Gimp (Sometimes)’ creeps through looped distortion and narcotic drone, while ‘Teenage Lightning (10th Birthday Version)’ refracts a prior track into a marimba-laced polyrhythmic pulse. The two-part ‘Sex With Sun Ra’ threads jazz reverence through throbbing synthesis, balancing paranoia and humour. ‘All the Pretty Little Horses’ is perhaps their most unexpected cover—a whispered lament that closes the circle on Coil’s fragile, feral grace. This isn’t an archival exercise, but a document of Coil’s transformation—where live-band muscle, software trickery and deep emotional currents pull their sound somewhere new. The result is bleak, bold, and eerily accessible by Coil standards.

Review: Durand Jones, Aaron Frazer and Blake Rhein return with Flowers, their fourth album, revisiting the same raw, budding energy that first plotted them together in a Bloomington basement. Embracing a back-to-basics approach, and echoing the collaborative spirit of their 2016 debut, this self-produced LP took shape at Rhein's Chicago home studio, with many tunes edified from one-take demos, capturing a no-frills but beautifully petaled synergy between the trio. Flowers' 11 phases lean into a refined, yet playful blend of soul-disco, exuding a smooth, homegrown, sexologic vibe, like an aphrodisiac planter hung from the dashboard as we embark on a late night drive. "All of these songs touch on such mature topics, things that we never got to sing about before," says Jones. A right blossoming indeed.

Review: The story of Kool Keith's latest project is as peculiar and unpredictable as the man himself. For decades, he's thrived on the outskirts of hip-hop, carving out a singular lane where eccentricity, sci-fi alter egos and razor-sharp wordplay collide. If rap had its own multiverse, Keith would be one of its most elusive figuresidrifting between dimensions, reinventing himself with each new project, all while maintaining a presence that feels both legendary and underrated. His first full-length release since Black Elvis 2 reunites him with longtime collaborators and fresh voices alike. Hip-hop mainstays Tash (Tha Alkaholiks) and Marc Live (Analog Brothers/Black Elvis) bring their unmistakable styles to the mix, while rising talents like Dear Derrick and Yah Zillah add new energy. The production, handled by Grant Shapiro, is an exercise in classic boom bap craftsmanship: chunky drum loops, hypnotic samples and that signature off-kilter bounce that Keith navigates so well. Review: Contrasting starkly to Marina's 2021 album Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land - which explored bold, politically charged themes and a subtle seapunk aesthetic - the Welsh singer's 2015 album Froot, reissued here, allows fans to recall a time in which a brighter, organic synthpop and Europop was once explored by the artist. Reeling back to the personal sphere, Froot - her third album and her last with the name The Diamonds tagged on - contracts to an accessible, classic pop feel with vibrant productions and a carefree attitude. Its biggest moment is doubtless the title track, which hit the UK Top 20 in a shower of earwormy la-la-las and smart, witty lines.

Review: Spanning five EPs beginning with the 2002 EP 'Vrioon', the VIRUS compendium marks an important era in the shared history of minimalist magna Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto. The look-back comes after the duo first connected through a mutual appreciation for each other's work in the early 2000s: Sakamoto had become interested in experimental electronica and came across Nicolai's (Noto's) minimalisms under the Alva Noto moniker. Intrigued by the precision and texture of Nicolai's sound, Sakamoto reached out; though he was hardly able to predict the unbalanced, restlessly abstract expressionist sound to follow: the sonic equivalent of a sputtery colour field painting.

Review: First released in 1971, Garra captures Brazillian legend Marcos Valle at his most playful and politically subversive i a sun-soaked record full of breezy melodics, cerebral arrangements and beneath-the-surface protest. Reissued by Spanish imprint Vampi Soul, it sounds as compellingly bittersweet as ever. Review: A specialist of short, exquisite instrumental funk records, Masayoshi Takanaka laid this sweet, yearning, yachtbound record down in 1979, following the previous year's Latin sojourn, Brasilian Skies. This slice of jollity sacrifices much of Takanaka's regional focus, and instead brings seven rather more generally awesome, mostly instru-prog-funk tunes to the fore (even though 'Radio Rio' still alludes to Brazil's home city, where Takanaka spent much time honing the samba and bossa nova influences that informed his craft, as well as performing). Lead tune 'Blue Lagoon' is noted for catapulting Takanaka's career after it was taken up by Pioneer for a TV ad; ambient heads would likely contest this history, arguing that the later ambient cut 'Sango-sho No Yousei' is the star tune, and the one that should've won him the limelight.

Review: This album is one that is always going to be reissued until the end of time. It's pure, raw, inescapably good soul music that was popularised in recent years by Floating Points and his Melodies International label. The 1976 debut album by Chicago soul, rare-groove and jazz-funk fusionists Tomorrow's People was led by the Burton Brothers. This reissue comes on red vinyl for the first time and is full of a dynamic blend of styles-from the sax-driven disco-funk of 'Let's Get Down With The Beat' to the doo-wop-tinged 'Hurry Up Tomorrow' and the fiery 'Hurt Perversion'. The 20-minute title track, Open Soul, is a mesmerising space-soul journey which kicks off this highly sought after gem in style.

Review: On the second instalment in his Requests LPs series, veteran jazz pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto leads an iron-clad trio with Hiroshi Kagawa on bass and Toshio Osumi on drums, successfully dispatching yet another recorded magnum made up of well-recognised sheet pieces from his own discography. Made up entirely of Yamamoto standards solicited by fans in advance of the recording, the pianist was solicitous in turn, reeling off each piece with ease: 'For Once In My Life', 'Gentle Blues' and 'The Third Man' all make for headsy selections besides the usual repertoire, cementing Yamamoto's extemporary playing; his ad-libbing, cufflink-flicking talents as a pianist.

Review: Formed in 1975, the British industrial group Throbbing Gristle - Genesis P-Orridge, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Chris Carter, and Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson - had pushed sonic and cultural boundaries over the edge, with their transgressive performances, experimental electronics, and confrontational aesthetics. After disbanding in 1981, TG's reunion in the early 2000s was met with both excitement and skepticism; rather than nostalgia, they continued evolving, creating new works like Part Two: The Endless Not (2007), which managed to scupper expectations beyond the mere expectation that they scupper expectations. This Berlin performance, on the cusp of a new year, captures their raw, improvised power, in the space of five tracks which would be released on the 2007 record. Haunting, mechanical, and utterly uncompromising.
