Review: This four track EP is a return to Anthony Hart's pirate radio roots in the 90s, with clean amen breaks, contemporary use of well-known jungle vocal samples and a remix from 'The Grim Reaper' Loxy. Those who got into DnB and Jungle in the 90s through Eruption and Underground FM will feel at ease in BR's breakbeats, the single 'Horse Mout' being a pure slice of break heaven with its dub patterns and breakneck BPM. This EP marks the North London legend's final release under Planet Mu, and what better way to usher in the next phase but with a call-back to why Basic Rhythm is such a staple in the scene. For those not brushed up on their Drum n Bass history, get started here.

Review: Alan Myson makes a very welcome return with this new body of work under his Ital Tek moniker. As a staple of Planet Mu since his debut in 2008, his style has grown on its own terms while retaining a core identity. Myson's instinct for looming, cinematic melodies is maintained to great effect, coming through in abundance on driving-yet-beatless opener "Chamber Music". It's not all poised and refined though - "Deadhead" slaps with a darkside heft that nods to the heavier side of Myson's musical roots. Likewise "Bladed Terrain", which has a strong whiff of synthwave coursing through its veins thanks to those buzzing leads. With towering production values and strong melodic themes throughout, this is Ital Tek through and through, but equally a strong step on for a staggeringly skilled and ever-evolving artist.

  8. Boundary Object VIII (3:29)
Review: An album very much of the producer's own devising, Boundary Object was recorded in Budapest and Prague between 2020 and 2022, and utilised Lazar's own bespoke compositional interface in order to take form. Fittingly, then, the form it takes is every bit as individual as the kit it was made on, sounding quite unlike most other electronic records you will have heard recently, or indeed at any other point in time.

Staccato rhythm and suggestions of hooks and sonic motifs rule the roost in many parts here, with each 'Boundary Object' - all tracks carrying that name and a number - sitting in an aural place very much of its own. Put them all together, though, and the record has real coherency, with each tune seemingly becoming more whole and decipherable than the last.

Review: A revolutionary album in the electronic music tapestry, 'Lunatic Harness' broke conventions left and right when it was released back in 1997. The 4th album for u-Ziq is by far their greatest and most influential, it's breakbeats, jazz flits and electronic ambience can be described as proto-breakcore in a sense. No better to see all these elements at play than in the opener 'Brace Yourself Jason', a smorgasbord of sonic delights that acts as a preview for the entire record. This expanded release is the final say in the 'Lunatic Harness' canon, including previously unreleased material adding onto an expanded version containing EP material on a clear quadruple 12" boxset, housed in a high-quality case.

Review: u-Ziq is Mike Paradinas, the label head at Planet Mu. And this, despite the title, is the first in a new series of EPs for the label. They are all based around the fact that his classic 1997 album 'Lunatic Harness' is now 25 years old and getting a special Anniversary Edition. The music here has been inspired by Mike going back through the archives and revisiting some of the sounds from the 90s - namely jungle and jungle tekno. Those templates are updated with modern thinking and modern gear but a fantastic sense of melody remains with sombre pianos, acid lines and amen breaks also chucked into the mix.

Review: Mike Paradinas amassed a fine body of work under the stage name u-Ziq through the 1990s. The Planet Mu label head is currently reissuing some of it with Lunatic Harness, his fourth album form 1997, the latest to get the treatment. It came out of the so-called drill&bass movement but was more pretty than most from that niche sub-genre. While Aphex Twin and Squarepusher always went for abrasive textures, he delves into more celestial and suspensory sounds rich in shimmering melody. It remains one of the best IDM albums of any era.

  12. Don't Tell Me (It's Ending) (6:38)
Review: Mike Paradinas continues to be a prolific force in electronica after so many years helping push the scene forwards via Planet Mu. Magic Pony Ride is his first LP of new material on his own label since 2013, although Analogical Force did carry the excellent Scurlage LP last year while he's also been busy reviving the Tusken Raiders alias for more roughneck electro and jungle business. There's jungle to behold on this new record, too, but as with much of his u-Ziq work, Paradinas prefers a more melodious approach here. There's also a different element at play - dare we say a degree of maturity in the compositional aspect? Just check the haunting piano-led lilt of 'Goodbye' and you'll see what we mean.

Review: Mike Paradinas is well known these days as the man behind peerless label Planet Mu but of course he was also a core part of the IDM firmament back in the 90s. He had a super run of albums that sat right up there with the best of them in their own way and now many of them are being reissued. But Magic Pony Ride is an all new long player and his first for his own label since 2013. It has his signature happy melodies and wordless vocals - he was writing it while mastering an anniversary version of his Lunatic Harness classic - with wide open spaces sucking you in to their midst as the jungle beats ride on.

Review: Planet Mu main man Mike 'Mu-ziq' Paradinas and Hannah Davidson AKA Mrs Jynx have long been friends, though it took shared grief (both had a parent who succumbed to cancer over the last couple of years) to finally get together in the studio and make some therapeutic music. The results, as showcased on Secret Garden, are nothing less than sublime; a set of highly emotive, picturesque tracks that mix bittersweet bliss and heart-aching musical melancholia with brief blasts of aural sunniness and rushing bliss. It's rooted in ambient and electronica, of course, but also includes a number of hypnotic, dancefloor ready excursions and rhythmic, soft-touch epics. Above all though, it's as melodious and colourful as it is poignant and thought-provoking, offering a surprisingly on-point musical translation of the grieving process.

Review: There's plenty to get excited about on Silk Road Assassins' long-awaited debut full-length, which arrives some three years after their acclaimed debut EP, "Reflection Spaces". For starters, the trio has delivered something that neatly sidesteps convention, melding bustling, loose-limbed grime and trap rhythms with all manner of layered electronic elements. Some of these are dark and moody and others fluorescent, kaleidoscopic and tropical in tone. "State of Ruin" twists, turns and twists again on umpteen occasions, delivering a musical snapshot of our chaotic times that veers from paranoid intensity to rush-inducing bliss in what seems like the blink of an eye. OK, so we may have got a little carried away, but it's certainly a superb set that's more than worthy of your hard-earned cash.

Review: Given it's a reunification of latter-day UK electronic visionary Rian Treanor and decade-spanning next level imprint Planet Mu, many ears will already know what to expect from this one - a collection of tracks that are jarring, alien and wildly unorthodox, while still somehow immediately engaging rhythmically. Suffice to say, your presumptions are correct in this case.

In many ways the four tracks here are among Treanor's most accessible, although that's perhaps not saying too much. The broken, dub-techno-on-speed opener, 'Obstacle 2', manages to be frantic and deep at the same time. The glittering synth lines of 'Obstacle 3' help create a sense of rave-y invitation, despite the track itself being a staccato curveball. While the remaining two efforts are equally impressive examples of how to push sonic limits without asking too much in terms of audience endurance.

Review: Arguably the first most important electronic music album of 2021 sees long-since-risen UK IDM-glitch-bass-something else-movie score master Rian Treanor going to town on all manner of noise patterns that simultaneously bore hypnotic holes into your mind while keeping those little grey cells excited by way of the sense that anything can happen. Especially the stuff you don't expect.

Mutant two-step on 'Mirror Instant', minimalistic d'n'b tech on a half beat courtesy of 'Metrogazer', sparse dubstep all over 'Closed Curve'. Representing the strength of the 140-plus dance renaissance across a multitude of tempos and influences, the fact you can still recognise the producer's signature on everything in spite of stylistic differences is proof he's long since carved out a space of his own.

Review: Finnish producer Vladislav Delay is releasing their sophomore album as an industrial drone narration of the juxtaposition of returning to urban life after exploring the northern arctic (an idea explored in his previous works). After a long walk or meditative experience of peace, the moment when we thrust ourselves out the front door onto the main road - that is Isoviha. No track better encapsulates the synthetic incessant noise of city life than 'Isonuha' with it's synthetic incessant noise. Industrial crushing and experimental cymbal crashes fight each other in this bloodsport of a track. 'Isoviha' is intense and heavy on the soul, a reflection of it's anti-synthetic narrative.
