Review: Heaven Smile is a Nduja-affiliated label that is back with a second offering that takes a trip into futuristic techno as well as offering up some superb abstract outings. 'Hold-1' is an ambient soundscape that draws you into a filtered synth that pulses as changes shape. 'Track 2' is dubby, techno-leaning house with diffuse chord vamps and 'Aliasing' is a distorted, scruffy collage of broken beats and knackered claps with a fuzzy pulse running through the middle. 'Hold-3' offers another ambient moment to catch your breath then 'Windmill' suspends you in amongst the stars.

Review: Since making his debut as 33.10.3402 11 years ago, Nenad Markovic has built up quite a catalogue of experimental, left-of-centre musical treats, most notably via frequent outings on L.I.E.S and ESP Institute. Here he makes his bow on another label, Third World, in the process providing DJ Evan's imprint with its debut release. First up, he provides a fresh '2022 mix' of the previously compilation-only '1000 Julys', a minimalistic epic where wayward electronics, intoxicating industrial sounds, hazy chords and marimba style melodies rise above a deep, weighty bassline and sparse, shuffling drum machine beats. 'Deep Beneath The Ocean Waves Of Labyrinths and Coral Waves' is similarly informed but warmer and deeper, with melodic motifs that lap like waves, pads that wash over your soul, and beats that bubble and spit attractively.

Review: Laima Adelaide's new 12" on Shahr Farang is as deft as sound design gets. The hugely limited 12" is all about quiet artistry and mastering the small things. The A-side 'Empty Mind' is a delightfully sparse and empty yet potent piece with supple, suggestive rhythms and sustained chords that are grainy and lo-fi. It's amazing just how absorbing such little sound can be. 'Pattern' then takes up the whole of the flip with a more pulsing and dynamic rhythm but the whole tune still seems to float through space with distant starry twinkles, deep space energies and a hopeful sense of melodic beauty.

Review: While there's no doubt the Middle East has stepped into the electronic music limelight in recent years, catalysed by good (a rebalancing of media focus within dance culture) and bad (controversy surrounding events like MDL Beast and the media's desperation to keep 'breaking new territory' in a world growing smaller by the day), Fatima Al Qadri is not part of this wave. A Senegal-born Kuwaiti, the US-based artist has been doing very good things for well over a decade (2010's 'Muslim Trance' mix is a must hear), creating everything from music exploring meeting points between Arabic traditions and contemporary synth work, to sound installations for renowned galleries. No stranger to Kode 9's Hyperdub, her third outing on the imprint since 2014 puts dark, atmospheric ambient out on the streets of Dakar after dark. Or something like that.

Review: Current scene favourite Nils Frahm teamed up with Icelandic multi-instrumentalist Olafur Arnalds on three breath taking excursions through lush ambient textures on "Stare" as a surprise release back in 2012 for label founder Robert Rath. "A1" features Frahm's entrancing irresistible melody over some gorgeous all-consuming strings and glacial soundscapes courtesy of Arnalds. Review: UK techno mainstay Kirk Degiorgio has made a lot of great music over the years, much of it under the machine soul/tech-jazz-inspired As One alias. His latest EP is another typically impeccable slab of Motor City inspired tech-soul brilliance. Lead cut 'The Unveiling' is deep, gently uplifting, gloriously spacey and effortlessly far-sighted, bringing bags of emotion as well as authentically crunchy machine drums, immersive pads and awe-inspiring melodies. He opts for an enveloping, otherworldly ambient techno/IDM sound on 'Descend Module', with discordant notes and hallucinatory acid lines riding high in the mix. The EP also boasts two reworks of previously released cuts. Ian O'Brien goes ultra-deep and gently breakbeat-driven on a superb revision of 'The Ladder', before Luke Slater drops a hypnotic, ultra-deep revision of 'Absorption Spectra' as The 7th Plain.

Review: Past Inside the Present's 'Pulse' series is an investigation into ambient tech and beat-driven ambient sounds. Who better for the job on this second edition than master craftsmen ASC and Joachim Spieth? ASC opens up with 'Tidal Disruption Event', an understated, underwater rhythm with jittery percussive patterns and bright shards of melodic light piercing through the mix as more coarse soundwaves break over the top. Spieth's 'Subtle' is just as artful and delicate a mix of persuasive rhythm and melodic beauty. A classy Nitechord remix closes out this fascinating EP.

Review: Grand River's always-illuminating One Instrument label reawakens with a new album from Martin Sander and Michel Isorinne's Bandhagens Musikforening project. Having previously appeared on Northern Electronics and Semantica, now these two advanced synthesists place all their attention on a select few studio pieces to see how far they can take them. First up is the Roland System 100, which affords them plenty of tonal possibilities for the pulsing, kinetic 'Nedgravd I Naturen'. With the Yamaha DX-7 they create a towering ambient piece of FM synthesis, while the Roland SH-101 gets applied to a dense and detailed slice of obtuse leftfield techno. The Oberheim Matrix 6R becomes a vehicle for cinematic melancholy, and the Waldorf Microwave teases out an immersive swirl of ambience as you might well expect from the One Instrument series.

Review: Barnt returns for a weighty, new wavey three-tracker on Kompakt, not quite straying from his trademark minimal tech style, but nevertheless working in novel elements. 'This Is For The Decor Only' is a glistening ambient trance cut, working in detuned leads and melodic 'woahs' (woah indeed), while 'You Know What's Gone' recalls everything from mid-80s body music, new romantic dance, and medieval music. 'Fan' is the ambient closer, revealing the producer's musical talents far beyond that of mere dance music. As Barnt says, he wanted to touch on a "ceremonial, emotional, grand spirit", and he's achieved just that.

Review: Once again, Music From Memory has dug deep for inspiration. Very few will have come across the original 1987 pressing of Ich Traume So Leise, a long-forgotten collaborative album that brought together trumpet player Heinz Becker, songwriter Karl-Heinz Stegmann, and poet Isabel Zeumer. Predictably, though, the tracks which the Dutch label has chosen to reissue are exceptionally good. "Mein Tanzlied", for example, features Becker's meandering trumpet lines and Zeumer's eyebrow-raising spoken word vocals seemingly drifting over an intoxicatingly funky, mid-80s dancefloor groove, while "Dir" is a seriously atmospheric chunk of beatless jazz poetry. Flip for the Balearic electro-funk of "Der Schnupfen" and the languid, new age ambience of "Abends".

It's a record that could be a lost 70s classic as much as a new school homage to minimalism, experimental ambient and vintage synths. In fact, this is a selection of archive recordings in the artist's characteristically idiosyncratic style that we cannot get enough of. Naturally, the Nottingham trio has pulled out all the stops to make sure that the release is as memorable as possible. They set the tone with 'Exit', a suitably gorgeous, sofa-ready shuffler in which glistening guitars, bubbly electronics and dreamy chords ride a warming bassline and sparse, minimalistic beats. Put simply, he wanted to explore aural interpretations of the human desire to create mental breathing room by pausing emotions to process feelings when circumstances become overwhelming. Recorded at ICP Studios in Belgium, after demos were laid down in his own facility deep in the stunning Yorkshire Dales, it's hard to imagine a more fitting setting for these ideas to form. A place that's equal parts bleak and beautiful, and certainly remote (in UK terms, at least). So what we have here is sometimes eerie, always stunning, packed with spatiality and a tangible emotional quality you will not be able to escape from.

Review: Fresh from showcasing some of the buried treasure within Vasilu Stepanov and Vlad Dobrovolski's work as SAD, Glasgow 12th Isle crew has decided to deliver something undeniably fresh: a debut EP from Toronto scene stalwarts Cosmic JD and Jersua Leao as Bruxula. The EP is pitched as being sited 'somewhere between the dancefloor and the living room', showcasing an attractive fusion of electronic and acoustic instrumentation as well as Leao's Brazilian vocals. On side A the pair smother a warming, laidback mid-tempo groove with echoing jazz guitar and evocative vocals ('Pala Mo'), before delivering some woozy ambient stargazing in the form of the inspired 'A X'. Review: Is there any artist in electronic music that releases as little music yet remains as highly revered as Burial? We can't think of any. As it happens, this new Streetlands EP is actually the hallowed UK producer's second outing of 2022 after the ambient offering Antidawn back in January. As always it finds him back on Kode9's Hyperdub label. 'Hospital Chapel' is eerie atmosphere and lo-fi samples, 'Streelands' is another sparse ambient cut that is full of melancholy and 'Exokind' is the soundtrack of a faraway planet with distant solar winds and only the smallest of microbial activities for you to tune into before a signature angelic vocal brings the beauty.

Review: Philadelphia's cultural significance doesn't quite resonate in the same way on the European side of the Atlantic as it does back in the States. Review: Is there any artist out there more prolific than Shy aka. Special Guest DJ? Perhaps only few would - or should - already know that Caveman LSD is his latest alias. Breaking from his very own 3XL imprint, the inimitable artist lends his talents to Canadian label Isla (run by Priori and Ex-Terrestrial) for 'Total Annihilation Beach', an exciting divination and appeal to the intersection of techno, illbient, dub and (dare we say) deconstructed club. Review: Civilistjavel's most recent album, 2022's Janmatter, was a predictably atmospheric and out-there affair that blended suspenseful ambient moods and melodies with occasional IDM rhythms and plenty of experimental chops. Here two giants of leftfield electronic music and experimental techno give their interpretations of the album, crafting 'remixes' based on stems from a variety of different album tracks. Dave Huismans dons his familiar A MAde Up Sound alias on side A, re-imagining Civilistjavel's work as a hybrid deep techno/dub techno/ambient techno epic - all densely layered ambient textures, deep and distant beats, and waves of effects-laden synth sounds. Ossia takes a different approach on his 'Disconnected Dub', delivering an immersive sound design experience built around creepy, effects-laden ambient chords, unsettling rumbles and echoing bleeps.

Review: Copenhagen label FELT welcomes back Civilistjavel for a fresh four tracker that builds on the success of the Jarnnatter album in 2022. It is another collection of fine electro-acoustic drones in the fashion of greats like Biosphere and has a trip-hop sojourn with Cucina Povera that is particularly interesting. Though leaning on dub techno in the past for inspiration, there is a less rigid take on genre in these tracks as various locations "in the Nordingra area of the Swedish high coast are exorcised and channelled through sound."

Review: Fresh from bringing his brand of intergalactic electronic fusion to Nummer Music, Moonshoe Records regular Cousin (real name Jackson Fester) makes his bow on Naff. The Australian is in prime form throughout, offering up hard-to-pigeonhole blends of IDM, ambient techno and dub that were reportedly inspired by the expanses of bushland close to his home. He first explores the dubby end of IDM on creepy-but-beautiful opener 'Second Message', before joining the dots between energy-packed breakbeat, dub-fuelled techno and extra-percussive electronica on confirmed club cut 'Disting'. 'The River' sees the much-admired Aussie blur the boundaries between UK funky, dub and ambient techno, while 'Padda' is a picturesque and bubbly, eyes-closed excursion. Closing cut 'Ohm Alone', meanwhile, is a gently tropical shuffle through immersive ambient dub techno with nods towards the more experimental end of UK bass.

Review: Vemodalen means 'The fear that everything has already been done.' If that's not an enticing enough invitation to dBridge's album then we don't know what is. The music as relatable, too. Powerful, slow, sexy and vulnerable, it paints from a synthetic palette anyone over 30 has grown up with and will know intuitively from music and movies. Ranging from poppy motifs that are reminiscent perhaps of Roxy Music or Visage to more introverted electronica that nods at the Rephlex sound and perhaps Si Begg, all backed up by his history as Heartdrive and the Autonomic sound, this is dBridge looking back to look forward. A-side 'Ark Welders Dub' is a menacing and prowling track with a picked bassline and smeared chords to add real depth and weight. It's one to foster a heads down mood on the dancefloor, while emotional release comes in the form of the flip side. Silva Screen are committed to presenting her pioneering works with the due reverence and ceremony they deserve, and so it goes for the two pieces of incidental music she composed in the 1960s, pressed onto this beautifully packaged gatefold 7". A-side piece 'The Delian Mode' has become something of a byword for Derbyshire's work, and listening to this record, there's nothing else in musical history quite like it.

This time, however, they jump start their machines and distortion pedals, and land on the Jealous God imprint; the label is run by a rather startling trio, the combined talents of Karl O'Connor aka Regis, Juan Mendez aka Silent Servant, and James Ruskin. It sounds like Damien Dubrovnik have all the respect they need, then! All four sound sculptures seem tailor made for the label, where glacial drones hint at something otherworldly or religious, and faint pulses can be heard in the background of the mix. It's techno without techno, dance music without the dance, and we love it to bits. Quality.

Review: Pace Yourself has already won plenty of plaudits for a great debut EP from YS and equally superb ambient full length from Dream_E. Now it scores again with Horizons Sauvages, which was originally written for the exhibition of the same name by painter Marie-Laurence de Chauvingy de Blot. Both artists have a shared love of nature and the sound pallet here is just that. Organic, layered, endless, beautiful. Both pieces are meditative ones where new age music is reinvented with a less sentimental and cliched edge, and a more immersive and real world feel.

Review: We're not sure Endless Melancholy is the most appropriate name for Oleksiy Sakevych, an electronic ambient artist based out of the sprawling and musically vibrant Ukrainian capital of Kiev. As this two-tracker goes to show, there's every chance you'll feel elated after pressing play on his studio work.

Review: We don't know anything about Eyot Tapes other than they have a new cassette album on the way via Muscat. First comes this 7" taster with two tracks from the Paradise Lost album. 'Abhor' is brilliantly deep and enchanting with sonorous bells, distant bird calls, scattered drum rhythms and a soothing vibe that is ethereal and organic. On the flip is 'Path Of Snakes,' a more experimental mix of what sound like xylophones, muffled vocals, Middle Eastern-style melodies and drifting atmospheres of otherworld intrigue. Our only criticism of this record is that it's not longer!

Review: Siamese Twins Nic Ford, Khun Fluff, and Temple Rat team up with sonic reinterpreters Jonathan Kusuma, Konduku and Higher Intelligence Agency, for the Katha Remixes - adding to the recently popularised genre of amphibious techno. While the label Siamese Twins normally go for cassette, this neat precision V/A release is a yellow vinyl number. Like a noctile toad stalking the night, the tracks here range from dark organic chuggers to jumpy synaptors to melodic bloopers, all reflecting different facets of the amphibian master genome.

Review: Berlin-based but American-born producer Fred P is as deep as they come. Private Society has been his latest label concern for a while now and this State of Bliss series kicked off in November last year in fine fashion. Part 2 is another of his smooth signature blends of jazz, ambient and house. 'NY' has shimmering chords and a percussive clatter that eventually clears to reveal a skittish broken beat that is live and lush. 'Awakening Desire' then cuts loose on expansive ambient pads, with worlds vocals smeared across a wide open night sky in suggestive jazz drumming drifts way down low. It's an experimental piece before the funky jazz dancer 'High Fusion' gets you on your toes with a killer bass guitar line.

Review: The very first live stream on 9128.live broadcast from the studio of Rafael Anton Irisarri, as he and Thomas Meluch (Benoit Pioulard) pieced together a completely live improvisation, christening the newly created 9128 airwaves and setting the bar for many more live takeovers. With one album between them as Gailes, and profound work individually (also together as Orcas), Rafael and Thomas are masters of the ambient craft, combining intricate field recordings, guitar, pedals, vocals and heady reverb across a 40-minute non-stop immersive listen, split into two 20-minute sides for the inaugural 9128 vinyl release. The 9128 label aims to document significant live performances by artists that previously performed on the 9128.live platform. With recordings initially created for a singular collective listening moment, and often as part of a festival or takeover weekend, label recordings will re-present this music for further listening across various formats that best suit each release. Review: Trip-hop meets modern digital ambience on Gi Gi's latest for INDEX:Records. Nothing but the music meets the ear here, plunging us into ricochety sonic hotwirings from the jump. Allusions to dancehall ('Maiolica'), dub ('Palm Slick') and illbient ('Lilted Song') ring true here, while a vocal feature on the track 'Sinews' - from fellow mic-caresser and expert moniker-coiner Hysterical Love Project - yields a sound that recalls something like the combined sonics of HTRK and 3XL. A not-to-miss EP for anyone who loves it textural.

Review: Gonno is one of the artists right at the heart of the current Japanese house and techno scene. He now lands on the Taiwanese label Jin with the sort of stylish sounds that have earned him that reputation. He opens ups with sophisticated house of 'Energy Flash' with its drum loops gently rocking you back and forth with diffuse pads bring the soul. The Voiski remix is a more melancholic cut with bittersweet synths riding ups and down the scale and warped bass propping it up from below. Things take a turn towards twisted and textural techno on 'Final Hate' (original mix) then into a world of ambient beauty on 'Arabica' to send you home feeling soothed.

Review: Based in Bristol, UK, experimental musician and vocalist Lucy Gooch is certainly a name to keep an eye on right now. While boasting little by way of discography, this being her debut EP which follows the self released 2018 record, 'Sun', she has all the hallmarks of an established synth-y siren. You heard it here first (possibly). Compris-ing five sumptuous tracks that are pared back but, upon closer inspection, incredibly deep and immersive, elements of Bjork and Imogen Heap are audible in the songs here. Warm notes, sensitive, ethereal vocals and a sense of real passion behind the work itself. The likes of 'Rushing' comes close to a sombre choral mood at times, 'There Is A Space In Between' could stand with the best ambient work, while 'Stalag-mites & Helictites' is a hypnotic journey into the inner mind. Or somewhere near.
