In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country
Zoetrope
Review: When it comes to a reissue such as this it can't be understated just how arresting the work of Boards of Canada can be in the right situation. This EP, that came to light in between Music Has The Right To Children and Geogaddi, represents the enigmatic duo at their most powerful, channeling their energy into four long-form tracks that draw on all of their combined strengths. "Kid For Today" is haunting and dark but utterly heartbreaking, whilst "Amo Bishop Roden" heads into more mysterious territory. "In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country" is eerie in its titular invitation to join a cult, and "Zoetrope" tips its hat to Terry Riley et al in its looping phrases, but really there's no describing the magnificence of these gems, pleasingly reissued on vinyl to beat the Discogs chancers.

Review: It's rare that an electronic album is the biggest album of the year, or at least the most hyped. That's certainly the case with Syro, Richard D James first official release under his Aphex Twin moniker for some 13 years. So, is it in any good? For starters, it sounds like an Aphex Twin album. Listen through to the 12 tracks, and many of his familiar staples are present - the "Digeridoo" era rave breakbeats, the mangled synth-funk mash-ups, the intoxicating ambient-era melodies, the warped basslines and the skittish drill & bass style rhythms. There's madness, beauty and intensity in spades. In other words, it's an Aphex Twin album, and - as so many have pointed out since the album's release was announced - there's no-one else quite like Richard D James.

Review: Warp's Boards of Canada reissue campaign reaches Geogaddi, perhaps the duo's most expansive (if not their most popular) record, presented here on a 3LP gatefold edition. Considerably darker than its predecessor Music Has The Right To Children, the claustrophobic sounds of "Gyroscope" and sampled spoken word in tracks like "Dandelion" and "Energy Warning" present a somewhat dystopian setting, filled with unsettling sounds, such as the light but eerie melodies of "Alpha & Omega" and "1969". Undoubtedly one deserving of reappraisal.

Review: Some 25 years after delivering his debut 12", Richard D James hasn't lost the ability to thrill or inspire. By his obtuse standards, the material that makes up the surprise Cheetah EP is actually rather laidback and melodious. "Cheetah2 (LD Spectrum)", for example, sounds like a slow house jam written by robots, while the even deeper "Cheetah7B" shuffles along in a metronomic fashion, seemingly oblivious to the increasingly aggressive World at large. Of course, those trademark skittish IDM rhythms are present - see the B-side's lead cut - and the Cornishman has thrown in a couple of hazy ambient cuts for good measure.

Review: While his AR antics and massive stage shows might be a far cry from the subversive rave culture he came up in, Aphex Twin remains one of the most fascinating and gifted electronic dance music producers of his generation. Get past the fanfare and bluster, and it's still an incredibly exciting prospect to be opening up a new box of his charms, and he's as generous as he's ever been on this new four-track EP. As a key architect of the braindance sound (whether he likes the tag or not), Richard D. James demonstrates his gift for uncanny emotionality and dexterous drum programming on the lead single 'Blackbox Life Recorder 21f', hitting a spot not too far from the realm of his last album Syro and The Tuss material. With a lush fold-out sleeve to house it all in, it's another fine addition to the canon of a true cult phenomenon.

Review: The hype machine may have kicked into overdrive at the announcement of a new Aphex Twin EP, but after all there's a reason we all get so excited. Richard D. James is just a rare sort of artist - one who can wrench untold depth, detail and feeling from the oddest of angles and still keep it rave-ready in the process. It's been a while since we had some new material from the Cornish wonder, but now he's gifting us four fresh slabs of braindance par excellence which bristle with his distinctive touch. Those subtle microtonal shifts in the melodies, the particular flair with which the drums are dissected, the overall head-spinning tapestry of the whole thing - no one does it quite like Aphex, and this CD single gives you his considerable skills in the highest definition.

Review: You wait three years for a new Arca album and then two come along at once. The Barcelona-based, Venezuelan artist has already dropped 'Kick I' and 'Kick II' on his standard XL stomping ground this month, and has now decided to remind us why we fell in love in the first place. &&&&&& is the producer's seminal debut album, and it still sounds fresh today.

Occupying a space somewhere between techno, the proto-footwork and juke popularised by the likes of Addison Groove at the turn of the last decade, IDM and ambient, it's a difficult thing to get your head around, from the strange piano discordance of 'Mother' to 'Feminine''s suggestion of intense 140s and the submerged liquid downtempo of 'Anaesthetic'. A seminal moment in recent dance history.

Review: Here comes the ever-prolific Eversines with more of that sinewy, seductive electro he's made his own over the past ten years. There's a bubbling, braindance-esque flavour to 'Void Walk' with its interwoven synth lines tickling your grey matter in all the right ways. 'User Six' maintains the vibe while nudging a little more towards that spooky vibe you'll hear on labels like Eya, while 'Rainy Move' switches things up on the B-side with plenty of boxy swing and some cheeky organ flex which comes on like a vintage Wagon Repair release.

Review: The Nerve Collect label has fast become one of our favourite outlets. It's a Dutch imprint from Identified Patient and Gamma Intel that deals in hard-hitting and twisted fusions of techno, IDM, drum & bass and breakbeats. This fourth EP is another explosive one with Doctor Jeep laying down pulsing great kicks and running them through with fractured vocal fragments and well-defined layers of percussion. It's pure dancefloor weaponry of the highest possible standard. For us, the yelping vocals and cantering techno of 'Largatixa' and heavy beatdown skank of dubbed-out monster 'Oil Drum' are the standouts amongst many here.

Review: Kompakt's Total 24 compilation is the nest episode in the label's amazing series. This cd version opens with Hamburg's Ada remixing Heiko Voss, followed by Jurgen Paape's vibrant 'Chee-Caruso.' Newcomer Deer Jade delivers the frolicsome house track 'Jukurpa,' while Jonathan Kaspar's 'Are You' captures the euphoria of his DJ sets. Review: Dark Entries welcome back the inimitable Doc Sleep aka Melissa Maristuen for a superb new album of ghostly and ethereal house and techno. This is a welcome follow-up to last year's ambient and IDM exploration, Birds, and shows another side that draws on Maristuen's years of queer clubbing. It fuses aspects of New York house, Berlin techno and West-coast breakbeats and is "a love letter to the West Coast's magnificent natural landscape, the light of the Pacific sunrise." That is reflected in the sublime synths and silky rhythms which manage to both move your body but also captivate your mind. It's another cracking album from the Doc.

Review: The iconic Total compilation series returns with its 24th installment, continuing to set the standard in techno music. This year's edition offers a diverse and engaging lineup that celebrates the genre's rich history while embracing fresh sounds. Tee Mango opens with 'So In Love,' a track that revives the minimal funk of early Kompakt days with a touch of English charm. Reinhart Voigt's 'Der, der mit dem Gummiball sang (Orange)' features an eclectic mix of animal sounds, adding an unconventional twist to his trademark style. Jurgen Paape's 'Chee-Caruso' blends Rhenish joy with tropical flair, creating an upbeat and whimsical track. Rex The Dogs 'Laika' pays homage to the first dog in space with its bleepy, nostalgic vibe. Michael Mayer's 'Urian' is a playful nod to his love for crossword puzzles, while Jonathan Kaspar's 'Are You' captures the vibrant spirit of Cologne's nightlife. Sascha Funke's 'The Heck' honours German showbiz with its trippy electro beats, and ARGIA's 'Love Keeps You Running' combines groove and pop in a heartwarming fusion. Jorg Burger's psychedelic contributions and Wasserman's fairy-tale-inspired track complete this eclectic mix, making Total 24 a standout in the techno landscape. Another great edition by one of the longest running and most successful techno labels of all time.

Review: "One swallow doesn't make a summer" isn't just a famous aphorism by the philosopher Aristotle. It's also the name of this stalwart Running Back V/A compilation, which aims to live by the mantle of the famous Ancient Greek thinker's passion for gestalt consistency via a stunning series of house musical forward-movers. This time bringing five tracks across the spectrum of technicolour dance music, we kick off on the trance-dance pscyho-efflorescences of Ricardo Baez' 'The Age Of Energy' and end on the twinklingly ovular world-as-will that is Jonus Eric's 'Ribbon'. All tracks here burst with the energy of a flowerbed on steroidal growth serum, yeahsome yellers and puce petunias flourishing with lady-lucky eudaimonia.

Brian Kage - "City Of Tomorrow" (6:50)
Pop Out & Play - "Corrosive Tongue" (7:47)
Review: The Fourier Transform label outlay an arresting sonic journey on their debut release, bringing together breakbeat, ambient IDM, ambient techno, and prog house under a single banner. Opening with Inkipak's 'Betwixt', we're met with sonorous low-mid square waves and machine-gun-fire breaks, recalling the breathtaking, verging on apocalyptic expanse of a warehouse rave turned laser light show turned warzone. We break from this warring weir with 'Omnicron Acid' and 'City Of Tomorrow' by Gimmik and Brian Kage respectively, which lowers the intensity and sonic flow via spacious atmospheres and dudding percussive pops. Finally, the perfect fusion of the former two moods is achieved on 'Corrosive Tongue', the lead synth on which sounds like just that.

Bongo Groove (7:50)
Music For 18 Musicians (Conny edit) (8:24)
Review: This 12", a third release from the freshly minted (and relatively mysterious) Private Post imprint, arrives with little or no information about either the EP or the artist behind it, Conny. We think (though it has not been confirmed) that it's the same Conny who put out a fine EP on Krystal Klear's Cold Tonic imprint back in 2018. Either way, opener 'Bongo Groove' is attractive, undulating and dancefloor-ready in equal measure, with heady hand percussion, layered drums, marimba melodies and new age bells rising above a deep, warming bassline and metronomic kick-drums. On side B, he delivers a genuinely revolutionary rework of Steve Reich's American minimalism classic 'Music For 18 Musicians', wrapping elements of that outstanding piece around lo-fi, slow-motion hip-hop beats and trippy electronics.

Ben Kaczor - "Murano" (8:09)
Review: Speciale 02 on Orion Italy is a collaboration between Ben Kaczor and Orion that brings together a remarkable mix of spacey, otherworldly techno sounds. Side-1 opens with Ben Kaczor's 'Gambler,' a lower BPM track that offers a refreshing change of pace for techno enthusiasts. The chill sounds and beautiful melodies woven into the composition create a soothing yet engaging atmosphere, making it a standout for those who appreciate a more relaxed vibe within the genre. Orion's 'Technocut009' follows, merging melodic techno with elements of IDM and a house-inspired bassline. This unique combination results in a track that feels both experimental and accessible, pushing the boundaries of traditional techno while maintaining a good groove. Flipping to Side-2, Orion continues to impress with 'NR2X,' an uptempo track that blends an analog groove with moody, trance-like elements. Its driving rhythm and atmospheric layers are great for deeper listening. Ben Kaczor closes the EP with 'Murano,' a track that leans into the more classic techno sound while still offering his signature touch. Overall, Speciale 02 delivers a diverse and intriguing journey through modern techno.

First out of the blocks is the nice and futurist 'Foreknowledge' with its beeps and pulses colouring steely tech grooves. 'Controversial Sequence' is more zoned out with balmy pads bringing some far-sighted cosmic ambiance and 'Experiment X' on the flip does as all B1 cuts should - gets more loose and weirder for the late-night crew with wispy melodies and panning synth drones. 'Revolution' shuts down with a nice rueful and melancholic feel in the pads.

The title cut opens up with some coy, playful funk that is sure to win over any newcomers. 'Virtual U' then flip the script with a lo-fi and downbeat sound, scratchy melodies and distant prog guitar licks all topped with some smoked word and soulful musings. 'Rusha is another esoteric sound that's a bit like George Clinton on acid doing house music. 'Switch Tae U' is an 80s throwback jam with swaggering Soul II Soul-style grooves and carefree vocals.

Review: Not-so-simply put, Green Monster is what might happen if Ennio Morricone, Weezer, The Beatles, Oneohtrix Point Never, Jaga Jazzist, Massive Attack, Jimi Tenor, Hans Zimmerman and Aphex Twin got together to celibate the movies of Wes Anderson, David Lynch, Dziga Vertov, and Andrei Tarkovsky. Swerving the ridiculous question - is all that clear enough? - let's cut to the chase. Jempere's fourth studio LP sees the enigmatic visionary welcome a cast of more than 26 collaborators across 14 tracks. Together, they run the gamut from dark hip hop to light operatics, electronic balladry to sticky evening aired R&B-jazz, electro-trap and (other)world building soundscapes. Something that Jempere clearly takes very seriously, with the record itself packaged alongside booklets of lyrics and objects from the imagined visual realm of the green monster. A vivid, eclectic and diverse place packing as many surprises as rewards, overflowing with possibilities, big, bold ideas, and unique identities.

Tarde (Melchior Productions LTD Late remix)
Review: Nina's Tarde was first recorded in her bedroom three years ago, with the goal of maintaining the same intimate and personal vibe as the original session. The track is a moody love song, delving into the intensity of a relationship so powerful it feels as though it could break you. Now, producers David Lohlein and Alex Wilcox have reworked the track with bright, energetic remixes, bringing a dynamic contrast to Nina's sombre tones. Released as a limited edition on pink vinyl with hand-stamped labels, Tarde is an understated gem that shouldn't be overlooked.

What Else?
This Is What I See
Bluer Than Ever
Review: Dan Andrei is arguably one of the finest selectors of this generation and a master minimal producer who makes electronic music of the highest order. His latest outing sees him inaugurating his own brand-new label alongside Claudiu Stefan. Rainbow Hill is a platform for their more personal ideas and starts with four more of Andrei's brilliantly deft yet dramatic tracks. 'Numan's Touch' kicks off with rolling drums and bass and a fine eco-system of cosmic pads, twinkling keys and fizzing synths that are theatrical and involving. 'What Else?' then gets darker and more intense with heady loops and wispy pads, and again the ante is upped and the darkness pervades once more on the tense and taught dub-tech roller 'This Is What I See'. Last of all, 'Bluer Than Ever' floats above the floor with airy pads and radiant chords. A perfect 5am vibe.

Review: Eris, aka. Enrica Falqui and Dea Dvornik, mint the Plexus 4 label with the 'Glimmers' EP. New outings breed novel vibes; so too does this exciting new house pairing bring future-facing, melancholic electro-progressive flavours to the table with opener 'Kundalini Rising' and A2 ensuer 'Serpente'. Both tracks shimmy and plod through the twinned vibes of alien atmospherics via a driven whimsy, nailing a sweet interplay of seriousness and affability. B-siders 'Anticipation' and 'Game Over' contrastingly move more minimal with things, using, revelling in the natural monophony of, their various analog synths, their delectably dedicated studio gear. The final track ends on an eerier note, suggesting murkier future ambi-topias to navigate.

Tarde (Melchior Productions LTD Late mix)
Review: Nina Kraviz has approached her latest single ‘Tarde’ with cogent flair, issuing several vinyl remix sets to divvy up and complement a full ten-track digital compilation, made up of a star cast of remixes by major artists. On another 12”, Kraviz shortens the full ten tracks to a short selection. The tense, and hummingly fun, original track ’Tarde’, released earlier this year, is heard in full effect on this record’s B-side, coming complemented by Melchior Productions’ phattened ‘Late Mix’ in the vein of flickering tech house. The A-side is taken up meanwhile by veteran endurance DJ Ricardo Villalobos, whose version of ’Tarde’ doesn’t care a hoot about tardiness less than it does bask in it, slowly unveiling a clockwork mechanism of spitting schematic beats and tastefully placed vocal shouts from Nina’s original acapella.
