000 Baby (6:41)
000 Baby (OM Unit remix) (6:17)
Review: After many years turning out 12"s, Klasse Wrecks has decided to serve up a first-ever 10" and they give the honour to Mr. Ho. His '000 Baby' is a delightfully widescreen sound - a post-rave mix of comedown electronics, dusty breakbeats and soothing ambient pads with some smart vocal samples drifting like wispy clouds. On the flipside, we're treated to and OM Unit remix that beefs things up and speeds up the drums. The percussion too is more defined and the energy levels ramped up with deft 808 bass and searching acidic leads. A nice yin to the A-side's yang.

Justify My Love (7:31)
Review: Whoever is behind these STEDIT drops is striking upon pure gold, bringing a legitimately underground techno crunch to the pop edit practice. Having previously tackled the likes of Brandy & Monica and Ultra Nate, now two of the biggest pop divas of all time are getting some low down and dirty reworkings which tread the fine balance between earworm familiarity and the heads down moodiness of a locked-in dancefloor. 'Slow' becomes a slippery acid abstraction peppered with all kinds of sonic freakery, while 'Justify My Love' becomes a brooding, steadfast workout tipped towards the minimal crowd.

Review: This is a superb cross-Atlantic collaboration between hoodie aka Naemi and Shy and James K that harks back to the chillout rooms of the early post rave era. It's hazy and lo-fi music that fuses dub and downtempo with ambient synthscapes and in the case of 'Scorpio' deft vocal snippets that blur in and out of focus. On the flip is a wholly ambient exploration in 'Ether' which suspends you in space and time as arching pads reach out into infinity all around you. Two blissful pieces of musical meditation.

He also runs his own Fools Gold label and puts out from time to time a series of beat experiments smashed out on his SP1200 drum machine. This series kicks off with a nice red 10" and four cuts of floor-wrecking electro that are raw and brain-frying. They're not big, they're not hard, they're not smart, but they are sure to be damn effective.

Max M - "1002A"
Fabrizio Lapiana - "1002B"
Review: The latest offering on the sleek techno platform M Rec finds label boss Max M sharing vinyl-filling duties with Attic Music boss Fabrizio Lapiana, between them serving up focused slices of modernist techno with a side-serving of mechanised soul. Max M's "1002A" is a finely honed roller that works delicate chimes and gossamer beats into a honeycomb pattern that will appeal to all lovers of deep and hypnotic techno. Fabrizio Lapiana takes a more overtly romantic approach on "1002B", letting mournful synth notes call out an autumnal soliloquy over gently pattering rhythms to great effect. This is highly developed techno for those who want some colour rubbed into their functional club wares.

Overall Severity - "1003A"
Fabrizio Lapiana - "1003B"
Review: The unstoppable rise of the M_Rec Ltd imprint continues unabated, with another split release giving rise to two diverse slices of contemporary techno. Overall Severity, something of an unknown quantity in these parts, delivers the stout and sinister "1003A" with its eerie discordant synth lines, rousing drum lines and seductive pads making for just the right kind of main room peak time techno cut to win hearts and minds all over. Fabrizio Lapiana takes a more emotive approach, using rapid salvos of percussion but keeping them simmering rather than slamming, while reams of plaintive keys ring out with a palpable patience in a fine demonstration of machine soul.

Review: Italian crew Repitch Recordings, made up of Ascion, D. Carbone and new school industrial-noise heavy weight Shapednoise usher in the second release in their 10Inch series, which launched in impressive fashion with the split release from Marcelus and Markus Suckut. Using their previous works as a references point, the production of "Basic Impact" suggest more Ascion and D. Carbone input than Shapednoise, as undulating low end grooves, rhythmically delayed hi-hats and traditional techno drums share a similar cadence to Xhin's earlier work on Stroboscopic Artefacts, while the industrialised drum sequences and scorching panoramic noise-scapes of "Metempsychosis" make it undeniably known Shapednoise helmed the controls of this production.

Review: Oceanvs Orientalis and Ilhan Ersahin first entered each other's orbits by chance at a performance at Turkey's Cappadox Festival in 2018. Orientalis is renowned for his fusion of Eastern musical motifs and traditions with cutting-edge electronica, while Ilhan Ersahin has long plowed a unique path uniting assorted musical strains from around the world via an exploratory jazz-improv sensibility. Following two tracks ('Mesta' and 'Pire') co-written by Ilhan and OvO and released as collaborations, as well as two more Ersahin / OvO co-writes ('Revenge Of The Wankers' and 'Television') released under OvO's name alone, a fresh and exciting new song, '1980', now heralds a full-length collaboration slated to land in Spring 2024. The track's title hints at a certain nostalgic bent, all while still keeping its gaze firmly fixed on the future as it evokes sun-drenched, bygone good times. The 10" edition adds several extra versions, one of which spotlights the multi-instrumental mastery of Darkside's Dave Harrington, and the other the mesmerizing vocal stylings of Gaye Su Akyol.

Review: As collaborations go, this is an interesting one. It sees keys-totin' veteran Boyd Jarvis - a maker of slick US garage since the late 1980s - team up with drum machine revivalist Nick Anthony Simoncino for a spot of cross-generation pollination. The resulting track, offering in Club and Dub flavours, mixes all manner of live keys, organs, electric pianos and percussion with the sort of stark, stripped-back machine rhythms that marks out Simoncino's productions. It's an odd but alluring fusion; spacious and out-there while being dubby and floor-friendly, it sounds like a long lost outtake of a recording session from 1985. Which, we guess, is probably the idea.

It's nice to see the humour evident in all Barnhus output transferred here, with each of the three shimmering, gymnastic synth workouts peppered with a pop sensiblity. On this turn for Rawax "The Blitz (Data Mix)" comes on with all the grit you'd expect of the Motor City, rocking a chunky, bouncing rhythm and some dusty, filtered samples beefed up and honed for maximum floor damage. "G Dub (Dark Park Mix)" meanwhile wriggles into a deeper framework comprised of a bugging bass synth, cool and deadly chords and yet more of that addictive Romalis bump. Review: Second vinyl only sampler for the forthcoming digital only compilation that celebrates five years of Lazy Days with some classy remixers like Crazy P, Art of Tones and Ian Pooley taking on the label's best-loved tracks. This classy two-track ten kicks off with a Greg Wilson remix of "U Give Me" from Lovebirds which douses the crispness of the original in a sheen of resplendent pads, expertly dubbing out the vocal refrain and generally sexing proceedings up some. Review: Mark Phillips and Rob Lawrence made some of the heaviest industrial music during the 80's, and certainly some of the best the UK has seen, under the name 5X0D. This 1982 reissue was way beyond its time back then, bringing together the energy and cutting edge of techno and acid together with the chilling ambience of early synth music by the likes of Kraftwerk and the rest of the German 70's lineage. Take away the vocals and "Negativ Terminal Data" literally sounds like an early Chicago experimentation by the house legends of the day. It's certainly a recommended title and a highlight for this week's digging selection.

Review: After kicking off Tomoki's Holic Trax back in 2012, Mr G is back on the 10" focused label once again with two cuts that tap right in to his skills in austere and immersive house music. "A G Moment" is a classic groover from the G camp, all heavily filtered chord throb and steadfast drums in a somnambulant but utterly soulful state of being. There's a touch more spice to be found on the flip side with the titular diva vocal licks that decorate "So Get Down", while the drums roll with a more pronounced weight, particularly in the bottom end.

Having previously released a superb EP from Budapest-based Imre Kiss, they've now turned to one of the country's more established names, S. Olbricht (an alias of producer Martin Mikolai). There's much to admire on this intoxicating four-tracker, from the alien electonics and hustling drums of leftfield techno opener "Fi", to the crackling, off-kilter rhythms and ghostly chords of "RPSTS". Elsewhere, Mikolai demonstrates his deep house nous on the warming "IIX1", and fuses twinkling melodies, creepy chords and a throbbing low-end groove on the similarly impressive "Veuns".

Review: Those who've studied Tony Allen's distinctive drumming style often cite Art Blakey as an influence, so it's little surprise to find him paying tribute to the legendary jazz drummer on this superb album. Joined by his regular band, Allen covers a quartet of tracks written and recorded by Blakey and his band, the Jazz Messengers. The results are predictably impressive, with Allen's loose and polyrhythmic percussion providing a rock solid foundation for the horns, piano and double bass that sits atop. It's naturally closer to all-out jazz than to Afrobeat, but still bristles with the kind of punchy horns and life-affirming playing that characterizes Allen's work. "Thunder Suite", in which Allen drops a number of sweaty drum solos, is particularly potent.

Review: Speak to anyone who lived through them about the glory days of IDM and German producer Arovane (aka Uwe Zahn) is probably one of the first names they will happily reel off. Between the late '90s and his apparent retirement in 2004, Zahn was responsible for birthing a clutch of classic IDM longplayers like Tides and Lillies, the 2004 LP for City Centre Offices that seemed to signal his withdrawl from music. However, the production bug bit him again in 2013 and there has been a steady stream of Arovane output leading up to this Aarlenpeers EP. Issued on the Touchin' Bass label operated by self professed Arovan fan Andrea Parker, these two cuts bristle and pulse with abstracted electronic life in a manner one expects from Zahn. "Il_Eth" is quite epic.

Review: Mondo Disco and U-Ka on one sexy 10"? Disco partnerships don't carry much more clout than this. Mondo's take on "Do It" is less of an edit and more of a complete deconstruction and rebuild; taking the catchy vocal refrain and building a head-bending contemporary groove around it, this will seduce any floor in its path. Meanwhile on the B we find U-Ka on glistening form as "Disco" unravels into a shiny, bright-tight guitar-heavy jam complete with big brash synth boogie charm. Both are absolutely stunning.

The artist is unknown but the tune won't be. It is a throwback jam with a hefty piano line dropped in over a rugged bassline. Review: We're not sure who's behind the mysterious AC-EXP project, but the shadowy figure returns with more of that strange, submerged house music he's been tickling discerning DJs with over the past few years. After taking last year off, "1A" is a fine place to start things up again with a strutting jack track carrying acidic synth pulses that flirt with measured delay processing. It's a jam that sounds steamy and sinister all at once. "1B" maintains this restrained but seductive vibe with the slightly trancey throb of the lead synths pivoting around the snappy drums to great effect.

Rarely has that well-worn sound come on so expressive and fluid as it oozes in amidst the laid back funk of the track. The sneaky imprint's second release features a pair of collaborative reworks from Selvagem and Kiko Coastato, and Pete Herbert and Dicky Trisco. The former pairing's "Afoxe" is something of a slow-building treat, with delay-laden, chanted vocals riding a shuffling, samba-disco groove. Old pals Herbert and Trisco reach for the button marked "beach party", underpinning their breezy "Coconuts For Breakfast" with a solid, house-friendly kick-drum pattern and brilliant bassline. Review: Some 40 years after releasing his first material, Cerrone continues to deliver new music. As the title suggests, Afro sees the French disco legend paying tribute to African music, with the assistance of two rather special guests. Drummer Tony Allen makes his mark on the rather brilliant "2nd Chance", delivering the loose, swinging, booty-shaking rhythm that underpins Cerrone's trademark piano work, clipped funk guitars and grandiose orchestration. Makossa pioneer Manu Dibango assists on "Funk Makossa", which appears to be a killer new version of his 1972 classic "New Bell". Todd Edwards delivers a surprisingly reverential Afro-house revision of that track, while Mind Enterprises get all cosmic and dubbed-out on their deliciously spacey rendition of "2nd Chance".

Review: Iceland's Thule imprint is back in action with a string of welcome reissues that shed new light on an impressive back catalogue of dub-infused techno from the late '90s. Sanasol were one of the main operators on said label, and so their a.m.e.p release gets a remastering treatment here and it's not a moment too soon. "Glow" rips into action on a surging tempo even as the cyclical percussive and melodic hits fall with a light tough, making for the perfect kind of uplifting dub techno without all the leaden sub bass and overbearing feedback. "Five AM" is a highly advanced track for its age, moving with the subtlety and dexterity of Livity Sound material albeit some fifteen years ahead of the curve. "Matrix Noise" too finds an interesting, unconventional groove to latch on to, yearning to merge into the hybrid techno-bass contortions of the present day.

Annie's Song (Shadow Child remix)
Review: Alix Perez here with a release you'd expect to surface on Eglo under his Arp 101 alias as opposed to Shogun Audio. Regardless, Annie's Song is a bold statement of Perez's undoubted production talents, demonstrating he's fully capable of producing tracks that in a perfect world would gain mainstream success. Teaming up with vocalist Sam Willis, "Annie's Song" is a vivid, 21st century slant on UK RnB replete with slow burning synths, half step drum programming and plucked strings. On the flip Shadow Child rewires the track for the club, fixing on an authentic UKG flex that sounds like it's been dug up from a forgotten DJ EZ mixtape.

Road To Nowhere
Brothers & Sisters
Review: **REPRESS** The Jack Fell Down duo made a considerable splash last year with releases on Southern Fried and Hometaping Is Killing Music and now they resurface in style with the Another Way EP. The second offering from new Sccucci Manucci offshoot, Manucci's Mistress, this 10" operation is a good home for the Jack Fell Down sound. Lead track "Road To Nowhere" displays a pensive melodic restraint that many of the new crop of house producers seem to overlook in their excitement to get productions from Ableton to Soundcloud. If the A Side sounds like Jack Fell Down holding back, then "Brothers & Sisters" could potentially have them sectioned, such is the crazed madness of the screaming vocals that intermittently punctuate the 90s rave stabs. Great fun.

Mixup Blender
Review: A 10-inch vinyl release from the mysterious Jane in Palma - allegedly one of the many solo aliases of producer Julian Smith - who opens up a fresh series from the WMCL Recordings label. 'Arabs Version' and, on the reverse, 'Mixup Blender', are pair of heavy modern breaks and dubstep cuts respectively, with the former following the tradition of 'Hackney Parrot' or 'Trigger Finger' and the latter laying down a punkish, industrial steppers' forward-march, in which the satisfying shift of cut-up drum samples and vocal stop-starts are heard loud and clear.

Final Call (Peshay remix) (7:09)
Cubic Nature (DJ Trax remix) (8:12)
Review: Chris Read and James Curry's Suburban Architecture project acts as a vehicle for their love of music from the 1990s, and particularly jazzy, warming and expansive drum & bass. It seems fitting then that their new 'Architecture Dub' remix series kicks off via a ten-inch containing reworks from 90s survivors Peshay and DJ Trax. The former steps up first, channelling the spirit of his late 90s album Miles From Home on a rework of 'Final Call' that peppers a deep bassline and sweat-soaked Amen breaks with all manner of gorgeous, picturesque, jazzy and soulful musical touches. It is pure sonic bliss and genuinely life-affirming. DJ Trax opts for a slightly more cinematic approach on his moody but spacey re-wire of 'Cubic Nature', which is impressively underpinned by what sounds like live drumming.

Renegade Horns (Nookie remix) (6:35)
New Horizons (DJ Crystl remix) (8:32)
Review: Two of drum & bass' most rabid underdogs, Nookie and DJ Crystl, the latter returning only recently after a two decade hiatus - make a triumphant return to the foreground, joining Suburban Architecture in aid of the third edition of their Architecture Dubs series. A fresh fusion of old and new motifs, Nookie's remix of 'Renegade Horns' pays homage to a select juncture in the genre's evolution, recalling the era of "intelligent" drum & bass while nonetheless playing into the freshness and cleanliness that could only ever have surfaced after the 2010s. Crystl's version of 'New Horizons', meanwhile, is more refractive and dreamy, taking its required time to bask in its artisanal padwork, in contrast to its raw b-boy sample and frank Amen breaks.

Heal (8:29)
Plight (8:27)
Review: From his appearances on Aesthetic Audio and Ornate through to his own Atmospheric Existence label, Miles Sagnia continues to be one of the best kept secrets of British deep techno, and that's no more apparent than on this stunning release for Common Dreams. There's a looped up insistence to "Heal", but it's offset by emotive movement in the synth lines and an overall spiritual quality that escapes much cyclical techno. "Plight" takes a slightly slower path, amping up the early UK electronica tones for an immersive experience shaped out by interlocking rhythms and snaking melodies. It's a truly classy statement that stays true to techno while saying something original.

Ask Yourself (remix) (4:54)
Review: Richie Hawtin's super-dark Plastikman cut from 2003 "Ask Yourself" lends itself incredibly well to dub versions thanks to its dissonant pads, unnervingly spaced two-step and creeped out aesthetics. This 'anonymous' white label (we won't give the game away but if you know, you know) is proof. Filling Hawtin's space with rolling percussive drums and broader subs, this is the first time it's been freed from the shackles of dubplate for four years and it's as limited as it is dark. Don't sleep on this...

Review: Hyperdub founder Kode 9 has always operated at the vanguard of his own musical world. The author of the hugely dense and academic Sonic Warfare boss approaches making music from a different perspective and shows that again here. This new 10" on Flatlines features two 12-minute plus tunes. the first of which 'Astro Darien" (part 1)' opens with a dialogue about space travel before glassy melodies, solar winds and cosmic ambiance take over and another dialogue starts. There are no beats on 'Astro Darien' (part 2) either - it's another atmospheric bit of cinematic mind-movie music.

Alex Bau - "Artcica"
Review: Dustin Zahn's mix of "Kinda High Auf Und Ab" leads this release on Chris Liebing's imprint and it's a real techno treat. The vocals from the original are processed and looped stunningly over the top of a moody and hypnotic beat that maintains its momentum perfectly throughout the tune. Alex Bau's "Arctica" is also included, and it's again made up of all the classic components - dark rumbling bass and ear-piercing hats that show no mercy.

Review: Long-time bass stalwart Binga (AKA Sam Simpson, Baobinga and Pablo Beatz) has enjoyed a fantastic year with cuts on Exit, 50Weapons and now Critical's Modulations sub-imprint. Flirting around the 85/170 axis there's the same stench of musty, muscular party headiness that Dub Phizix brings to the table; ostensibly moody and mean but galvanised by a sense of fun and funk. Fans of big MC-led tracks should jump on "Ayo" while those looking for a sharper, hype-teaser should head directly to the sub-soaked "Freezy". Make no mistakes: this is a huge release for both Binga and Critical.

Tonight (previously unreleased)
Review: The brotherly pair of Donnie & Joe Emerson recorded just one album in their barn out in the remote countryside of America back in the 1970s. One of the most standout tunes form that initially private press only and now well known and cult LP is 'Baby' which gets reissued every so often. Here it resides on the A-side of this new blue vinyl, where the lovelorn brothers cut a heavy-hearted path through lo-fi blue-eyed soul pastures. On the flip is 'Tonight' which is a previously unreleased gem recorded during the same period. It, too, is emotion-rich and lo-fi in construction, with the pair adding their sublime vocals to a backing track rich in steel guitar solos, chunky bass and flanged guitar chords.

French duo Villanova get their track "On The Loose" given a fine rework by the Godfather of Deep House himself Larry Heard on this lush and sublime trip that clocks in at just under nine minutes in all its emotive glory and retaining Elbi's powerful vocals. Italian duo Easy to Remember are on the flip and their track "Smokey" gets the re-rub by Philo Louzolou on this jazzy and soulful broken beat excursion reminiscent of Atjazz or Restless Soul. Just stunning!

Review: A faceless producer, rumoured to be from Scotland and getting his 'revenge', appears here for the seventh release on Razor-N-Tape Reserve after great sessions by Caserta, Dirtytwo and Pools. On "Backchat" it's a looped up, boogie down affair complete with synth sax and pan pipes which support an obscure Steve Winwood sample. Absolutely electric and you're sure to get some hands in the air moments with this one. On the flip is a dub version that forgoes all the bells and whistles and works a razor sharp (mind the pun) arpeggio instead, for a more serious and late night version.

Review: Smallville stalwart Christopher Rau is currently in a rich vein of form - in recent times he's dropped some typical Pampa genius and been responsible for a slick remix of Drake & Griffiths tech house stomper "The Devils Eye". Ethereal Sounds boss Anton Zap handpicks as the next contributer to the background series - which has previously housed our favourite ES release from Uncle Deep. Handed such a task, Rau excels, crafting two deep jackers that come wrapped in a multiplicity of warm sounds - "Onion Smell" contains the best sounding kick drum we've heard since Uncle Pepe dropped "Deep Burnt" way back! Check "Tooth Brush & Rain" for a more percussive treatise on the KDJ template too. Big tip!

Review: The legend that is Spikey Tee steps up to Concrete Castle with a hefty new slice of old school drum & bass madness. He has been deep in this game since the 90s so really knows his onions. 'Badder Than Me' rides on tightly coiled drums that duck and dive with crisp hits as the plunging bass and searching synths keep up the pressure. 'Bumbo Ras' is then a more silky and fluid affair but one that hits no less hard. This frosted clear 10" vinyl arrives in a hand-stamped sleeve but also includes a large Concrete Castle Dubs sticker. Lovely stuff.
