Review: After three successful EPs for the wider Lobster Theremin unit back in 2015 and 2016, 1800HaighStreet drops an album for the London label, a twelve-track excursion into the shadiest, most deranged forms of house and techno. This is no surprise given the label's rise to fandom and hypedom over the last 3 years, but the producer has still managed to impress thanks to a glorious collection of distorted electronics. Each tune is very much focused on the dancefloor, however, and as such, thr label heads have dedicated no more than 2 tunes per side. Jeff Mills style, innit!? Gloriously hallucinogenic loops and a torrential downpour of harmonies encircle the entirety of this release, making it akin to the sort of no nonsense techno that emanated from the infamous Tresor basement back in the 90s. Hardcore gear. No bullshit.

Review: Representing Chi-town's next-gen league of flag-bearers, David Garrett returns to the mighty Lobster Theremin with four more ageless house works. Deep, slightly hazy, strutting, dynamic and loaded with some great sample play, these tap deep into the source. Highlights include the sudden splashes of colour that come out of nowhere on "Sample Sesh" and the insistent, dubby ripples of "Touched Feb" with fellow Chicago vibe maestro Adam Rowe. Complete with the breezy jazzy jacks of "Two Nineteen" and the poignant chords and warm bass of "Ooh Aah", this is one dog you won't want to stop barking any time soon.

Room 202 (12")

Deep House
  1. Room 202 (4:37)
  2. La Nuit (5:36)
Review: Room 101 might be where things are banished but "Room 202" is where it's at. A place where things are brought back from the past and celebrated for their true virtue; things like grainy, warm analogue production and robust grooves layered with devilishly simple details. With crunchy kicks and shimmering keys thrown in, you'll want to stay in "Room 202" long past last orders. "La Nuit" takes us deeper into the wee hours on a chugging new beat rocket that's steam-powered by a Moroderist bass arpeggio and more disco pops and bubbles than your suggest weekly intake allows. Spanish newcomer DIY 1990 builds us up again!

  1. Bell Blocker (5:48)
  2. Brain Poacher (6:27)
  3. TTT (5:23)
  4. Unknown Touch (5:42)
Review: House and techno contortionist Gilmer Galibard's debut on wax comes via London's prolific Lobster Theremin outlet, and we always keep a hawkish eye on new signings from the label. Galibard serves up four deep yet punishing cuts, with "Bell Blocker" dishing out the dubby techno, and "Brain Poacher" going for a more 90's techno swing complete with wailing bells and menacing beats. On the flip, "TTT" - possible ode to Will Bankhead's charismatic imprint? - is deadly and cold with its fuzzy swarms of sonics and 909 percussion, whereas "Unknown Touch" goes for a hypnotic approach, swinging its subtle distortion to and fro amid watery beats and grizzly low-ends.

Review: Grant was first brought into the ever-expanding Lobster Theremin family late last year following the release of his rock solid Crank album on label offshoot Mork. Here he graduates to the main label via an EP of spacey analogue house positivity. Opener "Feeling (Vocal Mix)" is our pick, sounding not unlike a dreamier contemporary update of Ernest St Laurent's deep house classic "Clumsy Lobster". That said, there's plenty of treats tucked away elsewhere on the EP, including the thrusting, dub-flecked late night hypnotism of "Values" and the fluttering, analogue-rich sunrise house of closer "No Lights".

  4. It's Gonna Last (5:27)
Review: Previously on Distant Hawaii, UK producer Tom Harris aka Hidden Spheres appears now on Lobster Theremin with four servings of his soothing, late night house. "It Ain't Easy" is a deep, jazzy and loungey joint, reminiscent of early Atjazz, as is the sexy and evocative "IshOnSax" featuring 'some of the most contagious saxophone ever laid to wax' courtesy of Ishmael. The B-side features the Moodymann-ish "The Feels", a raw house number full of heart warming pads, dusty rhythms and soulful vocals. Closing out the release is the melting pot of swirling sounds, field recordings and playful drum programming on "It's Gonna Last".

  1. Never (5:51)
  2. Stateless (5:10)
  3. Track 3 (5:30)
Review: Somewhat surprisingly, it's been two years since Imre Kiss's most recent outing on Lobster Theremin, the fine Raw Energy EP. This belated follow-up - his first 12" single since - is every bit as essential. Perhaps the most striking track is "Never", a fizzing but spaced-out techno excursion that makes great use of tumbling sub-bass and dreamy, ambient style chords. That said, the slower and even more bass-heavy curiosity that is "Stateless" - mutant broken techno fused with ultra-deep house - is almost as good, while bold, bumpin' B-side "Track 3" is the EP's most straightforward dancefloor moment.

Review: Steve Murphy is no newcomer to Lobster Theremin, having previously released a number of bombastic house and techno cuts on the imprint over the last couple of years. The Night Flyer is his newest alias, and was apparently created to allow him to make more industrial, EBM and acid-tinged techno. This eponymously titled first outing begins with "All Wrong", a nagging and mind-altering combination of psychedelic acid lines, looped vocal samples and thumping percussion. "The Girls Shoot To Kill" is an altogether bouncier affair, built around rubbery synthesizer arpeggios and clattering EBM percussion hits, while "The Night Flyer" fuses early '90s bleep melodies and LFO style chords with metronomic drums.

  3. Dolly Dipped (6:13)
Review: London based inter-dimensional traveller and producer Luke Palmer aka Ozel AB returns with his third release for the formative lo-fi imprint Lobster Theremin. Beginning with the hypnotic cyclicality of the title track; with its grinding bassline supported by bit crushed rhythm patterns and trippy vocals loops. On the flip, we have two more offerings in the form of the adrenalised party starter "Red Wet" which is compressed as hell in tape saturation and features all the ravey synths, emotive strings and bouncy bass that you retroverts want! Finally, "Dolly Dipped" is a slow burning and deconstructed jam for the afterhours and packed full of weirdly nefarious vibes: a soundtrack to twisted yet obsolete '80s themed fantasies captured to VHS.

  1. A Luv Jam (5:01)
  2. I Might Be Wrong (6:14)
  3. Dresden (6:12)
Review: Prior to joining up with Lobster Theremin for this volume of their white label series, Qnete's output had largely consisted of powerful but spacey tracks in an intelligent techno-meets-classic Detroit vibe. While hints of that style are still present on his first Lobster Theremin outing, there's a much more "classic deep house" feel throughout. Opener "A Luv Jam" comes across as the sort of expansive, star-gazing, Larry Heard inspired jam that moves the head just as much as the feet, while "I Might Be Wrong" doffs a cap in the direction of the Motor City whilst retaining an early '90s feel. As for flipside "Dresden", it offers a magical fusion of fizzing, Chicago-inspired drum machine rhythms and spacey, almost endless deep space chords.

  1. One Last Shot (5:04)
  2. Sky (rough mix) (5:47)
  3. Richard's Revenge (6:56)
Review: Italy's Raw MT popped up on our radars ever since his debut on Wicked Bass in 2013, not only because of Greg Beato's remix of his original, but also because we were like: "Whose this dude from Italy!? We dig!". Since then, he's been back on Wicked Bass, but it's time for his appearance on London's Lobster Theremin, giving us some much needed dust-house, as only they can provide. "One Last Shot" is deep, ethereal and rigged in texture, but "Sky (rough mix)" quickly ups the tempo and drops in some much needed acid squeal to please the heads. Side B, "Richard's Revenge" is brooding, spectral and hypnotic, taking Raw MT into a direction we weren't expecting, and one that we very much like.

  1. In An Emergency (5:21)
  2. XOXOXO (5:37)
  3. Crystal Catcher (Weed) (4:14)
  4. Donny Blew It (7:04)
Review: The seemingly unstoppable rise of Ross From Friends continues via a four-track assault on Lobster Theremin. While the producer's outings on sister label Distant Hawaii have been humid, tropical and melodious, the quartet of cuts here are a little bolder and more bustling in feel. Check, for example, the tough drum machine hits, swirling chords and chopped up vocal samples of "In An Emergency", the jacking drums and early morning wooziness of "Xoxoxo", and the suitably blazed, off-kilter deep house distortion of "Crystal Catcher (Weed)". Arguably best of all, though, is "Donny Blew It", an elastic fusion of sugary-sweet vocal samples, sparkling '80s soul synths and skewed deep house beats that's as loved-up and intoxicating as they come.

Review: Hungarian producer Route 8 first joined Lobster Theremin in 2014 following a series of acclaimed singles for labels such as Nous, Bokhari and Farbwechsel. A couple more releases for imprint and distribution outfit followed, before he surprisingly fell off the radar. Come Home is his first EP for almost two years; predictably, it's really rather good. We're really rather enjoying the rush-inducing warmth and positivity of opener "Come Home", where chanted, delay-laden vocal samples and sultry Latin trumpet solos drift across a sumptuous deep house groove, and the electrofunk-sampling thrust of deep gospel house bumper "FunFun". That said, both "Turning Point" (a deep and spacey breakbeat house number) and the rolling, riff-heavy late night shuffler "From The Valley" are also superb.

Review: Young Brighton producer Slacker (no not the legendary progressive house act of the same name) aka Sam Black is up next on Lobster Theremin following up great releases by Asok, nthng and Unfinished Portraits. He's channelling the jungle vibes of yesteryear (think Peshay) on the classic euphoria of "Amen To The Lonely" while acid house/Summer of Love aesthetics are channeled convincingly on "See Yourself" and capturing that classic Lobster Theremin tape saturated vibe. On the flip, it's all about the deep 303 therapy of "White Monk" where he works that little silver Roland box to the max, powered away by dusty 808 drum patterns beneath.

Review: In a sense, Snow Bone has been one of Lobster Theremin's mainstays since the label's relative growth to fame, and the artist's mechanical brand of techno is both effective on the dance floor and fresh on the ears. This time, he comes through like a roll of thunder with the bleepy, hard-faced techno of "Neon X", followed by the more chord-heavy analogue fuzziness of "Allstars". On the flip, "Tradecraft" offers some jaw-splitting four-to-the-floor in the same vein as artists like DJ Rush back in the DJAX days, and "Love Is A Stranger" falls in the dark depths of a techno depression that reminds us of the Avian output, except that here things are murkier, more distorted and a little more tenebrous.
