AKO10 Series Presents De Elite
AKO10 Series Presents De Elite (limited transparent orange vinyl 10")
Cat: AKO 10008. Rel: 04 Sep 20
Drum And Bass
  1. Stargazers (9:31)
  2. Cerebral Junglist (5:14)
Review: Right in the midst of celebrating their 25th anniversary, Stretch's AKO Beatz drop two stunners from OG Colin Lindo. The man best known as Nubian Mindz and also Alpha Omega, here we find him in his lesser spotted De Elite guise with two brand new pieces of timelessness. 'Stargazers' is built around a spine-chilling arpeggio wile beautiful brushed drums shake around a warm subby bassline. Flip for 'Cerebral Junglist', where the atmospheres are similarly chilling but the breaks are chopped and re-woven within snares of their lives. Immense.

AKO10 Series Presents: Decibella
AKO10 Series Presents: Decibella (translucent blue vinyl 10")
Cat: AKO 10005. Rel: 17 Mar 20
Drum And Bass
  1. Outta London (5:52)
  2. Be True (6:24)
Review: Rising London newcomer and regular DJ at the legendary Rupture Decibella makes her debut on Stretch's AKO Beatz with two straight-up jugular-cutters. Both writhing in the dark art of break craft, these are straight up jungle jams tailored for the dance. "Outta London" is the most forthright track of the set with its heavily layered breaks and dynamic flips from soft to savage while "Be True" nods back to the hardcore era with its euphoric pads, classic rave vocal line and more drums that were carved straight from the leathery soles of the devil's dancing feet. Expect more noise from Decibella very very soon.

Dem Want It (limited 12")
Cat: AKO 150010. Rel: 15 Oct 19
Drum And Bass
  1. Dem Want It (VIP) (4:24)
  2. Ganja Dub (5:39)
Review: Back to 94! AKO bossman Stretch digs deep into the DAT vault for these hefty piece of jungle dubplate history. "Dem Want It (VIP)" is all about those rolling percussive breaks and that bulging sub. Minimalism with clarity and soul, this still pokes the hell out of systems to this day. "Ganja Dub" on the B brings a little more soul to the jam with some beautiful keys before dropping back into Stretch's signature ruffage, sub-led sound. Released as part of AKO Beatz 150th release celebrations - and already sold out on picture disc - neither track have seen the light of a full vinyl release until this year, yet both sound as future as they did 25 years ago. Beatz working.

Drum And Bass
  1. Crush (7:15)
  2. Don't You Know (5:24)
Review: Fresh from appearing on AKO Beatz Arcade series last year, Italian groove maestro Enjoy returns to Stretch's stable with two emphatic slabs of deep, soulful jungle. 'Crush' is an emotional whirlwind that wouldn't have gone amiss on Goodlooking way, way back in the foundations. Spacey but anchored with a nice dubby touch on the bass, 'Crush' is an ageless ode to breakbeats. 'Don't You Know' takes us even deeper down the soul hole with a surging vocal sample over more space-bound pads and beautifully crafted drum work. Enjoy!

Review: It's been a fair old while since Dennis "Dego" McFarlane last donned the Tek9 alias, a solo pseudonym he first used in 1991 on the bass-heavy, Bleep and hardcore influenced weightiness of "Kingdom Of Dub". This album - his first under the name since 1999's jazzy and downtempo "Simply" - is not entirely new, but all of the music is previously unreleased. The tracks were produced at various points between 1995 and 2019 and mostly offer warm, melodious, funk-fuelled takes on jungle and drum and bass rich in bustling basslines, snare-heavy beats, jazz-funk chords (something that has long been a feature of McFarlane's work) and picturesque melodies. There are some heavier, rougher and more ragga-influenced cuts present, but the prevailing vibe is warm and positive.
