Am I The Same Girl
Am I The Same Girl (limited 7")
Cat: BLMS 011. Rel: 08 Aug 24
Am I The Same Girl (feat Momoko Suzuki & Reiko Oda From Cosa Nostra) (4:10)
Soulful Strut (Organ mix) (4:11)
Review: 45trio share their first release for Bloom Musi, this time around covering the stone-cold classic 'Am I The Same Girl', co-written by Eugene Record, of Chi-Lites fame, with Sonny Sanders, for singer Barbara Acklin. In '92, Swing Out Sister covered the album, but this latest rendition hears 45trio's Momoko Suzuki and Reiko Oda lend it a sweeter style by comparison. This dainty, vivid young soul morsel is a fine-tuned fine tune, one you'll undoubtedly want to continue humming along to long after its central, unmistakable hook - transposed up at least two octaves here - has played out. The B-side includes a special instrumental version, no less, released under the name of Young-Holt Unlimited - this one brings the hook line to an organ part, demonstrating the written song's potent and versatile instrumental repertoire.

Review: American jazz pianist par excellence Ahmad Jamal recorded The Awakening in 1970, originally for the Impulse! label. He was joined by Jamil Nasser on bass and Frank Gant on drums, and amongst his own compositions such as 'The Awakening' you can hear him tackling works from Herbie Hancock amongst others. Considering Jamal was already 20 years into his career by this point, the album has been hailed by critics for highlighting his evolution as a pianist, creating a more complex style without sacrificing delicacy and expression. It's a classic which is also loaded with hooks you might well have heard elsewhere on tracks from Nas and Common, to name but a few.

Review: Building on the success of their acclaimed 2021 debut, this second volume deepens the creative synergy between Stephen Bunn, Jon DeBrett, and their ensemble. Six Weeks in June features core members Neil Corcoran, Alan Barnes, Roger Beujolais, and the compelling spoken word of Tenesha the Wordsmith. The album also introduces contributions from instrumentalists Nathan Haines, Crispin Taylor, Alastair Martin, and poet Daniel B. Summerhill. Spanning six tracks and nearly 40 minutes, Vol. 2 blends spiritual, modal, and modern jazz elements into a fluid and engaging listen. Born from a chance reunion on London's 94 Night Bus, Bunn and DeBrett's collaboration continues to thrive, resulting in an album that transcends boundaries and resonates with jazz enthusiasts and beyond. This is an essential addition for any serious music collector.

Review: American singer, songwriter and musician Robert "Bobby" Caldwell dropped several much loved albums across the r&b, soul and jazz spectrum from the 70s onwards. He was known for the versatility of his voice and most noted single 'What You Won't Do for Love' which was taken from this double platinum and self-titled debut album in 1978. Later in his career, Caldwell started singing standards from the Great American Songbook, wrote hits for the likes of Amy Grant and Peter Cetera and hip-hop heads will also know that Caldwell is a heavily sampled artist. This reissue on Be With is a great reminder of his talents.

Review: Starting out as a group called The Dreams, Washington DC's Father's Children hit their stride in 1972, recording some early sessions before hitting the road around America. Unfortunately their career never quite gathered momentum despite releasing an album in 1979, but fortunately the masters from their early days were preserved and finally unearthed for a 2011 reissue on Numero. It's from this reissue that two of their finest early singles are pulled for this perfect soul nugget on Soul Direction, the slow and funky 'Everybody's Got A Problem' and the joyous, dreamy 'In Shallah'.

Review: Roberta Flack's debut album First Takes remains a treasure of soul jazz voiced by one of the greatest to ever do it. Originally released in 1969, leading up to the release of the album Flack recorded a series of sessions which have only been revisited in scattered moments. As Gilles Peterson continues his exploration of the Warner Music archives, he's comes across these sessions and gathered them together for his Arc label. As well as different versions of classics from First Takes, there are cover versions such as Flack's take on Mongo Santamaria's 'Afro Blue' and Motown anthem 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough'.

Review: Sam Gendel's prolific spell continues apace on his regular home of Leaving Records as he widens the net beyond the stark saxophone work he's best known for. This LP is ostensibly based around 14 different patterns within traditional Japanese embroidery, and these configurations have proven to be a strong jump off point for Gendel's delicate, acoustic compositions. There's minimalism and frailty around the sound palette, but equally a captivating warmth and some genuinely stunning musicianship. Gendel does indeed wield his sax plenty on the album, but it feels here like the emphasis is on guitar rather than woodwind, resulting in a captivating, understated listen from a true modern master.

Review: Incognito stands tall as a global funk, jazz, soul and dance phenomenon as well as rightfully being hailed as pioneers of the 'acid jazz' movement. Their track record boasts top ten hits like their rendition of Stevie Wonder's 'Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing' and numerous inspired originals, all of which helped them pick up millions of album sales worldwide. Their album Into You which now comes on blue and red vinyl radiates with vibrant, uplifting creativity, is backed by the expertise of longtime collaborators Mo Hausler and Richard Bull. With 15 dynamic originals including the silky-smooth lead single 'Back on the Beach,' the infectious 'Nothing Makes Me Feel Better,' and the seductive 'Into You,' Incognito sounds at their very best here,

Review: An essential snapshot of late 60s British jazz, Off Centre snaps pianist and arranger John Cameron during a rare small group session, capturing a uniquely vivid, rhythmically complex album. Renowned for his soundtrack and library music work, Cameron brings that same cinematic flair to these tracks: 'Off Centre', 'Troublemaker' and 'Omah Cheyenne' are rowdily rich in texture, yet never overworked. His collaborators include the extraordinary Harold McNair, whose flute and tenor sax playing bring a kinetic energy that nods to his Roland Kirk influences, but with a cooler, more spacious edge. There's a strong modal undercurrent throughout, bringing the session a searching, propulsive edge, reflecting the sonic gemstone gleams that music magpie Gilles Peterson helped champion on his storied Impressed compilations.

Review: Dennis Mpale had become a key figure in South African jazz by the time the mid-70s swung around having already had a career spanning some pivotal moments in the genre's evolution. From leading the trumpet section in Chris McGregor's Castle Lager Big Band to co-founding the jazz fusion group Roots, Mpale was instrumental in shaping jazz and in 1977, he released Our Boys Are Doing It-his solo debut. It was produced by Rashid Vally and issued on Mercury as a bold response to global trends which embraced township bump jive and featured legends like Kippie Moketsi. We Are Busy Bodies now reissues this essential title from analogue masters so it sounds superb as a key bit of jazz history.

Review: Spiritual flute jazz by the mastermind Antti Vauhkonen aka. Oiro Pena. Coming only to a limited edition lathe-cut 10'', of which only 20 copies exist, there's something in the ultra-exclusivist approach to release and distribution here that seems to mimic and or bottle the sentiment of the record. Oiro Pena, first released via Ultraaani in 2019, was made after the Finnish musician found solace and inspiration in the question: who was the first person to create instrumental music? Arriving at the conclusion that this person was probably alone, the ensuing LP is an engaging testament to the idea that wellsprings of spiritual, flauting sonics might gush forth from such thought experiments. Through four pieces of rippling flute-jazz, backed by free-strained piano and double bass accompaniments and sprinkled thereover by keyboards, drums, strings and reams of percs, all of which were at some point played by Vauhkonen himself.

For this latest 7" it's Jordan Rakei, who actually hails from Aus, but let's not get mad about that because the super smooth soul singer reaches new heights on the free flowing, heart opening 'Wind Parade'. Jazz pianist Alfa Mist takes care of the flip with a suitably cosmic exploration on 'Galaxy' that pairs live, busy drums and soaring synths with rich chords.

Review: Should you ever want to discover what was happening musically in Belgium in the "black hole" period between the variety orchestra movement of the '60s and the electronic music revolution that took place in the late '70s onwards, Funky Chicken is the gateway. This compilation - the first of two plus a ton of accompanying 7" samplers - superbly documents the various clusters of talented session musicians based throughout Belgium dabbling in all manner of funk, Latin, soul, psychedelia and more. Some acts you will know, like Placebo whose music has been the subject of a reissue programme from Music On Vinyl, but there are still plenty of curios and forgotten gems to discover like Open Sky Unit and the sublime orchestral funk of "Tonight's The Night" by SSO.

Look Me In The Eyes (3:03)
Review: Germany's gold standard soul, funk and sick label Tramp has dug deep again for this one. It's a reissue of Joe Washington & Wash's 1975 EP Blueberry Hill. It's a slice of wax that is hard to find and pricey on the second hand market and it's not hard to see why. The A-side title track is a funky number with big wind stabs and loose-limbed drums, hand claps and organic percussion. Pure vibes. 'Look Me In The Eyes' gets more raw and vulnerable with a slow motion, string-laced soul sound that will melt the heart.
