Review: When most people think of mid-1970s San Francisco, The Visitation is the kind of sound that likely springs to mind. Released in 1976 by a then-fledgling band called Chrome, the record is packed with the kind of psychedelic rock that invokes borrowed fantasies of floating high above the Gold Gate City, wings gifted through hallucinatory intake. Or in the throes of a tripped out party, waiting to board Jefferson Airplane. In reality, this was nought but a fleeting moment in the group's history, and what followed betrays a very different side to Frisco at the time, one defined by punk and post punk, giving rise to outfits like The Units. Relish in The Visitation then, because Chrome's brief flirtation with this sound is unarguably incredible and all-too rare.

Boris - "Luna"
Boris - "Quicksilver"
Boris - "Serial Tear"
Review: Japanese fuzzed out psych-tinged post-rock monoliths Boris never seem to rest on their laurels for long. Just last year, they repressed the first instalment of their three Heavy Rocks albums (originally released in 2002), and unveiled the grinding Bright New Disease collab LP with industrial hardcore outfit Uniform. That's before even mentioning the surprise Fade LP that landed at the tail end of 2022. Starting 2024 as they mean to go on, their latest endeavour is a years-in-the-making split album with Tokyo alternative space-rockers Coaltar Of The Deepers, featuring both re-recorded versions of older cuts as well as both acts covering one another's material. Boris member Takeshi has often cited COTD as a major influence, with the band even covering 'To The Beach' in 2019, which was, in turn, produced by COTD leader Narasaki. Now, finally arriving at Hello There, we have Boris providing an oppressive rendition of COTD's 2007 track 'Serial Tear', while the band return the favour with a more ethereal, aquatic re-imagining of Boris' 2014 single 'Melody'. That's before even touching COTD's cover of The Cure's 'Killing Another', which needs to be absorbed with as little outsider input as possible, so we'll shhh now and leave this long-gestating gem in your very capable hands and ears.

Review: Carrying the torch for bittersweet post-punk introspection like few others of her generation, Carla dal Forno has always captivated through the strength of her songwriting. That she also successfully channels the sound of the DIY 1980s is a bonus. On her third album, dal Forno has settled in rural Australia and the album reflects a drastic shift in her circumstances since being in the cut and thrust of Berlin and London. There's space for more open, light-touch songs to match the brooding, low-register tracks she made her name on. But in essence, dal Forno remains true to her muse, meaning returning fans will be more than satisfied with the latest step on for one of the finest singer-songwriters in contemporary post-punk.

Review: Industrial drone-doom supergroup Khanate have returned from their self-imposed slumber like some Lovecraftian elder god to surprise release their vicious comeback album To Be Cruel. Made up of veterans James Plotkin and Alan Dubin (OLD), Tim Wyskida (Blind Idiot God) and Stephen O'Malley (Burning Witch, Sunn O)))); their follow up to 2009's Clean Hands Go Foul re-submerges their harrowing, harsh noise post-doom machinations into icier depths than ever before, redefining their viciousness for the modern era of metallic experimental extremity. No word on an official reunion tour as of yet, but the group have announced that all four previous LPs shall be receiving reissues, offering latecomers as well as avid fans of their aurally debauched soundscapes a chance to revisit their sonic devastation with audiophile clarity.

I Threw A Rock Off An Overpass & Killed A Guy (2:50)
Review: Heart-tuggingly serene, sometimes morbid slowcore here from Liam McCay aka. Sign Crushes Motorist, a longstanding, multi-alias-sporting figure on the international indie rock scene. Sonic "mutedness" is the name of the game here, with McCay continuing to flesh out his dog-days dreamworlds of low-passed guitars, subtle harmonies, and gossamer (almost barely sung) vocal parts. An almost unbearably bedroom-bound sadness wafts from this album, as we're almost left to drown in the slide-guitarred lilts and pines of 'i just want to hold her' and the equally limerent emo progressions of 'theres this girl'. Then there's the increasingly morbid ambient interludes, such as 'i threw a rock off an overpass and killed a guy' - the album's crunching climax of telephone-effected yawps against rumblingly held chords - and 'loser monologue' - the mid-record we didn't know we'd resonate with. Notwithstanding its sad beauty, we sure do hope the album's title speaks for itself.

Review: There is a busy run of reissues of Sigur Ros albums planned this year. Valtari was the cult band's sixth outing back in 2021 on XL Recordings. The record was described by the band at the time as being the sound of 'an avalanche in slow motion.' They co-produced it themselves with Alex Somers in their native Reykjavik, Iceland. The sound is vast, often overwhelming you with waves of guitars that leave you breathless. It has long been out of print but now reappears on their own Krunk label on nice heavy wax.

Review: Sigur Ros' fifth full-length LP (originally released in 2008) gets reissued by Piccadily Records this week, after having remained completely out of print worldwide for far too long. This 2xLP of post-modern ethereal folk is noted for being the band's first to be recorded, completed and toured all in the space of just one year - they had formerly toiled for years over their previous albums. It might also just be the best LP to highlight the band's 'realness'; the lyrics were originally meant to be in English, but they later returned to their own native Icelandic for a more authentic feel.
