Was anyone ready for one of the most talked-about albums of the year to be Andre 3000 going ham on the flute? Probably not, but in a post-reality world New Blue Sun just slots right in. Of course the legions of Outkast fans are going to be split when an artist of such prominence takes a wild swerve into experimental musical pastures, but for those with an open mind or a pre-existing appreciation of ambient and leftfield music, this album is an easy sell. Teasing the tension between acoustic and electronic, ancient and hypermodern, grounded and ethereal, Andre has been bold and honest in presenting this album to the world and his gamble has paid off.

Review: Huw Marc Bennett takes direct inspiration from the music of Wales on his new album 'Days Like Now'. It leans heavily on acoustic for and melody as a result of being written during the pandemic on a stripped down setup of just bass and acoustic guitars. As such it has a quiet vibe, an intimacy, a late night and low-lit feel throughout that makes it all there alluring and personal. The drums that feature are lo-fi and fuzzy round the edges, the bring a happy energy to the tunes without dominating and Welsh language fans will be glad to see all the titles are native, too.

Photochrome (bonus beats part 1 & 2) (8:28)
Review: 'Photochrome' is a track that is shrouded in mystery. It has a rather elusive original release date, likely sometime between the late 1970s and early 1980s, and came on Italy's Idea which was a well-regarded label despite its small catalogue. Now reissued in full, the single exudes an organic aesthetic infused with early electronic elements that were emerging during that era. A brisk, pulsating groove is intertwined with what resembles an early 303 bassline and ethereal vocal. Dry drum recordings evoke a raw, DIY ambience next to the experimental effects that swirl and drift. A new two-part bonus beats remix is also included.

Review: Pablo COLOR and BERLIN LAMA's 'Solaris' is a limited 7" release that captures the essence of Balearic and downtempo vibes with a sunset backdrop. This gem, released from Ish Germany, is a breezy ride through twilight landscapes and nostalgic memories. In essence, 'Solaris' is pure magic - a captivating fusion of Balearic warmth and downtempo allure that leaves a lasting imprint on the soul. 'Madera' unfolds like cinematic scenes, radiating gleaming beauty as the music takes flight into celestial realms. Djembe drums invoke tribal rhythms, while heavy distortion guitars add depth to the rich depth. It's a splendid blend of primal instincts and introspective contemplation, perfect for the closing moments of the day. Check this out for one classy mix of Balearic, ambience and Latin vibes.

Review: Back in 2011, Nicolas Jaar joined forces with fellow Clown & Sunset contributor Dave Harrington for the Darkside EP, an impressive trio of untitled tracks that pitted the formers scratchy, near-paranoid production style against the latter's penchant for lo-fi indie-rock inspired fuzziness. Here, the duo dusts down the Darkside alias once more for a first collaborative album. Predictably, it's an impressive set, offering a collection of downtempo tracks that shuffle between crackly, out-there atmospherics ("Sitra", reminiscent of much of Jaar's Space is Only Noise album), echo-laden alt-rock experimentalism ("Heart") and heart-aching fragility (the James Blake-ish "Greek Light").

Review: Digital Imagination first dropped their The Essence of Thought back in the nineties and now the cult favourite gets a nice reissue in time for summer when it will be perfect post-rave comedown tackle. It is a sci-fi inspired mixture of house, transcend trip hop of the era with lots of analogue action and dusty drum breaks, smart little samples that add a cinematic edge and some lovely basslines. It was produced by a young Ted Heinz and originally release by Concept Records. OGs are hard to come by so don't sleep on the one which has been restored from the original DAT tape.

Open Water is the solo vehicle for audio engineer and Weird Weather member Duncan Thornley who hooks up with jazz greats like Greg Foat and Kaidi Akinnibi. It is an utterly blissed-out sound for happy daydreams and summery reveries with drifting sax notes, languid grooves and gentle Beatrice breezes washing over you to soothing effect.

Review: Robbert Heynen aka Exquisite Corpse served up one of last year's finest EPs with his Integration 12". Now though he has opened up his superb archives and invited the one and only Greek maestro Anatolian Weapons to set to work reworking it for this fresh new four-track EP on Transmigration. It's a deep and dubby affair to start with on 'Honeymoon' (Definitive mix) while 'Calling The Quarters' (Beauty Below mix) is awash with trippy electronic lines and shimmering pads. 'Outlandis' (Deep Anatolian mix) is a heavy, percolating bit of elongated electronic dub with 'Chalice' (Secret Acid mix) closing down the EP with another slow and captivating rhythm made from jumbled parts and tribal drums.

Side-1 presents 'Mystical Funk,' a mesmerizing blend of tribal drums, smooth funk grooves, and island vibes that transport listeners to exotic landscapes. On Side-2, 'Spaced Out' takes a more urban direction, featuring an infectious hip-hop/funk beat infused with sophisticated organ sounds and hints of jazz influences. The legendary Future Sound Of London have finally started dropping their Environments series on vinyl format, which will no doubt please the countless numbers of FSOL junkies out there! These sessions, the present title being the penultimate in a series of five, have been long sought after and they have been pivotal in shaping the sound of today's electronic dance music. Fifteen tracks in total here and the interesting thing about this album is the fact that it can be heard either as single tracks or as one developing and morphing wall of sound. All but one of these tracks, "Murmurations", are from way back and haven't seen the light of day, so get listening and indulge yourself in some pioneering sounds!

All hail the return of Beth Gibbons, following up on her first solo album no less than 21 years later. The Portishead singer has been patient in bestowing her gifts upon us, but each time we've been rewarded with a rare and singular music. Lives Outgrown promises to uphold the brilliance of her previous work, with intrigue sparked by the lilting, gently psychedelic lead single 'Floating On A Moment'. It's folky, gnarly and unabashedly beautiful, with her voice sounding utterly un-dulled by time. This particular edition is an indie-exclusive which includes the vinyl and booklet along with a bonus print - one for the collectors to jump on.

Amber Of Memory
Review: June 2023 saw Tommy Guerrero embark on a fresh round of touring, not long after an earlier Japan saw to rapid reacclaim for the Native American composer. Amber Of Memory coincides with the conclusion of this tour: a beautiful 12-track album of mid-toned surf guitar, ambient washes and drum-machine-driven floatations, where in which it's hard to discern where the guitar ends and where the textural soundbath begins. As if told from the instrumental perspective of a veteran musician gazing out over the waters of memory during a long retirement, key songs like 'The Days Before' and 'Vistas' are contented, equanimous pieces, but which nonetheless channel a symptom of mystery; the same source of inspiration that keeps Guerrero going.

Review: Lol Hammond is a former member of Spiral Tribe and early live techno act The Drum Club who now makes music on his own as Wah Wah Planet. Back in 1990 is when he penned this fantastic five track Balearic house EP alongside Russell Crone and with female vocal contributions from Lucy Sian. It very much lay out an early blueprint for UK street soul and the opener on the A-side 'Jewel' explores a romantic theme with hooky pop lyrics. Things get more left of centre on the 'Love FXU' with three trips into a smoother sound world perfect for sun kissed island dancing and with influences ranging from early breakbeat and trip hop to elements of dancehall music.

The pair have some of the most important albums and tracks in their respected genres and are arguably two of the most important figures in the electronic music chill out scene from the 90s, and when you add the input of Haruomi Hosono from Yellow Magic Orchestra on two tracks, it becomes an even more essential listen. Chill out heads unite!

Desert funkers Khruangbin announce their latest album A La Sala, turning their efforts inward to a more personal recollection of childhood and origination, and to reach a firmer understanding of what exact influences made this troupe who they are today. In contrast to their last record Mordechai (2020), uniquely conceived as a party record from the jump of its making, A La Sala (translation: 'to the room') is the measured, self-reflective morning after; lead singles 'May Ninth' and 'A Love International' pare back the layers even further than we could imagine Khruangbin pulling otherwise, making for emotional ponderings of the external world, inextricably tied to the internal as it is.

It features a red hot list of all the best current musical talents to be playing in the city and is a wild fusion of beats and Latin-American traditional rhythms and instruments, with elements of reggae, hip-hop, breaks and house sitting pretty next to cumbia and afrobeat, ska and bullerengue. It's a funky, playful and upbeat ride through the world's rhythms and is soaked with plenty of soul and sun.

Sound Metaphors offshoot Miss You has been particularly astute at licensing and reissuing long-forgotten European disco gems. They've found another unknown classic here in the shape of two gorgeously string-laden 1977 disco covers of Andalucian folk songs by singing sisters Las Dablas, both of which originally appeared on the same Spanish seven-inch. 'Zorongo' is authentic-sounding, faintly threatening disco rich in heady Clavinet motifs, soaring orchestration, low-slung 'walking bass' and sprightly piano stabs, while 'Solo Y Sin Problemas' is a slightly funkier and sweeter slab of mid-tempo disco. Best of all, though, is the new 'No End Extension' - a breathlessly brilliant, dub disco-flecked revision that teases out the instrumental sections before finally dropping the sibling duo's lead vocals.

Maara is a rather exclusive and mystic artist from Montreal who now unveils a debut album on Step Ball Chain. It's an adventurous record with 12 tracks across four sides of vinyl that range from emotive soundscapes to atmospheric drum and bass via mind-enhancing electronica. An already prolific producer, Maara shows there is no end to the different ideas she has inside her here. There is both beauty and darkness to be found along the way with lush pads, earth-shaking bass and melancholic mutterings and tender whispers from her own mouth all adding colour.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing on outer sleeve, also the record has light surface marks/scratches, but otherwise in excellent working condition***

By the time they headed into the studio to record Protection, Massive Attack were still riding high on the success of their peerless debut album, Blue Lines. While the resultant set, released in 1994, does quite hit the same dizzying heights, it remains a thoroughly great album. Of course, we all know the highlights by heart - the stoned bounce of "Karmacoma", evocative downtempo bliss of Tracey Thorn hook-up "Protection", string-drenched lusciousness of "Sly", and the gentle dub-house soul of the Horace Andy-voiced "Spying Glass", for example - but even the forgotten album cuts (see "Weather Storm" and "Better Things") have aged remarkably well. If you don't own a copy on vinyl already, you definitely should.

Review: After Moby emerged on the techno scene with his anthem 'Go' followed by two compilations of early works, Everything Is Wrong was to be his first proper album. Signed to the Mute label, the album was an impressive and surprising display of musical dexterity. Def Jam Recordings reissue the seminal 1995 album here as a 180g heavy vinyl edition featuring its original tracks, such as the euphoric rave energy of 'Feeling So Real', the uplifting house anthem 'Every Time You Touch Me', and the wonderfully evocative 'When It's Cold I'd Like To Die' with guest vocalist Mimi Goese.

Review: Mukatsuku are long-time friends with Norway's Espen Horne so it makes sense they have moved to issue a couple of instrumentals following on from the quickly sold out success of a limited 7" he dropped on Wah Wah 45's in late 2023. This hand-numbered 45 features 'Bakeren' which in vocal form was a big hit with Gilles Peterson and Craig Charles amongst others. On the flip is a version of Bergen Sunrays', here renamed 'Rory's Sunrays', and featuring some great organ work from London-based musician Rory More.

Review: Haruka Nakamura's Light Years: The North Face Sphere Spring & Autumn is a soundtrack that the Japanese composer created in response to a request from outdoor clothing brand The North Face to create an album for each of the four seasons. Two of his works feature here with changing acoustics, different melodies and gentle grooves conveying the evolving weather. The sounds have been made with various materials and instruments such as acoustic guitar, bass, sampling and chorus. It's a widescreen and immersive album where harmony and nostalgia happily coexist.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Garage Hermetique unleashes four cuts by Berlin's Onirik and collaborators, all recorded at his Schlesi studio hidden beneath the Schlesicher Tor U-Bahn station. A 'special and chaotic' place, it clearly proved a fertile ground for sonic alchemy, with the 'Good Bye Schlesi' EP traversing a smorgasbord of moods and atmospheres, from the mardy tekkno stomp of 'Rabenflug' to the pensive tone float of the aptly-named 'Ebb & Flow' via the effortlessly sleazy synth gyrations of 'Meier Low Rider' and the nervy Drexciyan shuffle of 'Critical Massa'. Class.

Review: There are some live albums which become as important to a band's legacy as their studio efforts and Roseland NYC Live is just that for Portishead. Given the Bristol group's considered catalogue, there's less competition for this 1998 release to stand out, but it also renders the stark brilliance of all the key players and the extended ensemble in sparkling clarity, not least thanks to the addition of a full-blown orchestra. Recorded in the wake of their second album and now reissued as an expanded edition to commemorate 25 years, it captures the band's early phase at its smoky, cinematic, head-nodding best. From every string swell to dusty backbeat, Rhodes lick to wobbly scratch, all fronted by Beth Gibbons' angelic voice, this is the live album done properly.

The Fall (Maurice Fulton remix) (6:25)
The Fall (3:41)
Review: Maurice Fulton has delivered countless killer remixes over the last two and a half decades, including plenty that for one reason or another remain hard-to-find. This remix of LA r&b/indie-pop fusionists Rhye - first released 11 years ago - fits in that category. Fulton's version, showcased on side A, is a typically atmospheric, spaced-out affair rich in trademark crunchy disco drums, fluid and wayward electronic synth-bass reminiscent of his Syclops project, elastic bass guitar, effects aplenty and tactile female lead vocals. As the B-side original mix - a piano-laden downtempo pop number that swims in similar sonic waters to Sebastien Tellier's 'La Ritournelle' - shows, Fulton's mix is a genuinely radical re-build that exemplifies the very best of remix culture.
