Bar 25 Music 125
  1. BONDI & ROTH - "Resize" (Kiki remix) (7:21)
  2. Danny Faber - "Hampi" (7:10)
  3. Phonique, Fairplay - "Zatar" (6:45)
  4. Martin Waslewski - "Dimensionen" (6:36)
Review: Berlin's Bar 25 was a real haven in the German party capital. It's reputation lives on strong in the label releases, the latest of which is a celebratory various artist affair. Kiki kicks things off with a heads down tech house stomper that undulates just enough to keep you in the groove.
Danny Faber's 'Hampi' is a headier affair, with suspensory synths keeping you locked on edge and then Phonique and Fairplay link for the more tribal and mysterious sounds of 'Zatar'. Closing out this party-ready EP is Martin Waslewski with the far-gazing chords and twinkling retro future keys of 'Dimensionen.'

High Beams EP
Cat: FS 005. Rel: 25 Sep 20
  1. High Beams (7:02)
  2. High Beams (Cristi Cons remix) (7:40)
  3. Gear Shift (7:48)
  4. Future Memory (7:36)
Review: After previous outings on this label as well as Joule, American Camelia take charge of the fifth EP from Fake Society and does so with a superb late night mood. His grooves are sleek, futuristic, and glow with soft neon hues as pads glide by like long-tailed headlights on a rainy motorway drive deep into the darkness. The drums are always supple carriages on which you ride in sheer comfort, with deft melodic motifs colouring in the spaces left behind. Cristi Cons serves up a typically classy remix of deep techno minimalism that is heady and hypnotic. This is a warm, comforting EP that oozes style and class throughout.

Abracadabra EP
Abracadabra EP (limited 180 gram purple vinyl 12")
Cat: AIMED 005. Rel: 30 Mar 21
  1. Abracadabra (7:56)
  2. Mazze (7:12)
  3. Flurry (7:46)
  4. Take Off (7:10)
Review: Cheise is the co-owner of this label and does a fine job of offering ups singular tech house sound that manages to be cosmic, dubbed out and melodic all at once. There sure is a sense of magic to 'Abracadabra' that has you under its spell from the off. 'Mazze' is a wild one with wonky bass and wild detuned synths blurting about the mix to bring that unhinged afters feel and 'Flurry' then smooths things out to go for a cruise on a nice knotted baseline with slick percussion and icy pads. The best of the lot might be 'Take Off' which feels to be in constant ascent through the stars.

Review: Though his career has taken many turns over the last decade, DJ Koze has remained that most illusive of creatures: a minimal-minded producer with an ear for a melody. This fourth full-length, packed to the rafters with big-name collaborations (Apparat, Caribou, Ada and Matthew Dear all feature), continues his move towards the home-listening sphere. So, while many of the heady rhythms and shuffling grooves hark back to his stripped-back past, Amygdala impresses with its woozy songs, genre-straddling fusions (see the modern soul meets deep house of "Homesick" or the steppy, tropical vibes of "Marilyn Whirlwind") and homely atmosphere.

Just A Touch
Cat: RCR 004. Rel: 16 Mar 21
  1. Something Easy (6:14)
  2. Emotional Moment (6:50)
  3. Just A Touch (6:30)
  4. On The Way (6:45)
Review: Roof Records is a label from Isernia, Italy established in 2019 and founded/curated by three guys named Paolo, Diego and Lucio. Last year saw some killer EPs by the likes of Orbes and Erica Menei, now the first release of 2021 is by Japanese producer Hayato Hayashi: a staple of the iElektronix digital label who makes his vinyl debut here - Just A Touch. From the dirty basement bounce of 'Something Easy' and the minimal acid sleaze of 'Emotional Moment' on the A side, 'Emotional Moment' on the flip reduces rave techno to a slower, steady tempo that's perfect for getting weird at the afterhours. All in all, these are dusty, hardware-oriented house jams from an old school state of mind.

  3. We're Out Here (6:56)
  4. On Core (Otis remix) (7:33)
Review:
Barcelona based Gamine welcomes Jack Keo following major releases on Art of Dark and Spaecial. He brings a heavyweight drum line to 'Trendy Anxiety' that really bangs while the tense and twisted pads up top get you on edge. The high energy pump of 'On Core' is another dance floor belter with sci-fi pads and plenty of bright surfaces and We're Out Here' goes pure video game soundtrack with its Wipeout style lasers and bumping beats. An Otis remix of 'On Core' closes out with a splashy electro style that switches things up nicely.

  20. Now That I Found You
Review: Five years after releasing his second album, the superb Sight & Sound, Kompakt stalwart Justus Kohncke finally delivers his third. Misleading title aside (it's for all intents and purposes a solo set), there's little to criticize. Kohncke is a past master at blurring the lines between warm, analogue synth-pop, melodic deep house and tactile techno, and here delivers more entertaining, musically rich explorations. He's at his best when aping the Harold Faltermeyer-produced warmth of Behaviour-era Pet Shop Boys, given his own subdued dancefloor twist (see "Idee Prozess Ergenebis", 'Tell Me" and "Flitter Und Tand"), though it's the album's roughest cut - the spiralling acid and tumbling electronics of "Nucleus Accumbens" - that makes the greatest impression.

  1. Momentum (7:00)
  2. Hypnotise (6:14)
  3. Hypnotise (East End dubs remix) (6:38)
Review: Before the pandemic hit, Manchester's Lauren Lo Sung was one of the most hotly tipped DJs in British tech-house, with a production career that was just beginning to flourish. While the closure of clubs has meant she'll have to wait to continue her fine form behind the decks, she continues to offer up occasional EPs that mark her out as an artist to watch. There's much to her admire on her latest outing. Lead cut 'Momentum' is sweaty and rave-ready, with much of the action centred on a mind-melting, effects-laden acid bassline, skippy but metallic drums and warped vocal samples. She cannily combines elements of deep house, techno and mid-90s garage on 'Hypnotise', which is fittingly given a deeper and more squelchy re-boot by scene stalwart East End Dubs.

Review: Cadenza head honcho Luciano has arranged a special series of EPs to coincide with the 15 year anniversary of his revered imprint, launching the first one here to begin the festivities. This chapter is dedicated to the summer season and contains five enchanting tracks with exquisite sounds. There are moments of lush and hypnotic freefall like on "The Amazing Lilou" and equally impressive when he dives deep into the exotic like on "Hiding Hearts" or "La Tirana Del Oriente" - the latter featuring wonderfully employed classical instrumentation. Elsewhere, lose yourself in the sonic sorcery of "Magik Mechanics" and its superb melodic minimalism - classic Luciano. Each episode of the series will be released every season.

06 (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: MOI 006. Rel: 03 Feb 17
  1. Track 1 (8:41)
  2. Track 2 (9:11)
Review: IO man Aleksandr Voznichenko once again dons the MOI guise for another trip into deep house/tech-house fusion. There's much to admire on this sixth self-released EP, beginning with the spacey pads, woozy chord progressions, New Jersey-influenced beats and rich bass of "Track 1". The flipside "Track Two" sounds like a riff on the same core elements, though the drum programming - and in particular the more electronic sounding cymbal lines - feel far more in-keeping with tech-house than the more swinging A-side. The swirling, cyclical chords and bubbly electronic noises dotted throughout the track only enhance the aural flavour.

Review: Now into the fifth edition in the mysterious Stowaway series and it's anyone's guess who is responsible for this one. Arcane and introverted minimal vibes abound here, particularly on the A side which is a paranoid journey reminiscent of Herck or Zefzeed. Over on the flip, we've got the moody, breakbeat driven soundscape of B1, while B2's glitched elements and clipped rhythm programming makes the perfect kind of microhouse to hear at a god awful hour of the morning aboard Berlin's Hoppetosse or Bucharest's Club Guesthouse. Tip!
