Don't Give Up (dub mix) (9:47)
Review: Adelle First luckily came up in the late '80s to early '90s tradition of cut-up house. 'Don't Give Up' is her defining moment; a precious South African disco piece that is unusually sensitive and detailed in disposition, and which features a brilliant dub mix on the B, that shows off every production aspect of this tried but true style with a startling sense of intricacy. First released in 1986, the flair of producer Tom Mkhize together with First's lolling vocals is once more put on display on this 2022 reissue.

If That's What You Wanted (2:31)
Love (Your Pain Goes Deep) (2:26)
Review: Frankie Beverly And The Butlers featured main man Frank alongside Jack "Sonny" Nicholson, Joe Collins, John Fitch, and Talmadge Conway. They put out 11 or so singles from 1964 to 1969, so burned bright but not for long. 'If That's What You Wanted' is one of their later singles and a damn good Northern Soul work out complete with physical drum funk and big horns as well as tambourine details. On the flip is 'Love (Your Pain Goes Deep)' which slows things down and draws out the emotional pain both with a forlorn vocal and more heavy heart drums and strings.

Review: Vocalist and jazz and soul pianist Andy Bey worked with a range of celebrated talents such as Horace Silver and Gary Bartz but his debut solo album in 1974 takes some beating. It is an otherworldly offering of cosmic jazz and soul that is truly unique. The tone of Bey's voice always conveys a certain sense of pain, while the instrumentals around them range from deep and pensive to funky and playful. It is an album that takes a long time to parse and understand if you ever really do, and it has a superb cover, too. Do not sleep on this reissue.

Review: Once dubbed "the screaming eagle of soul", Charles Bradley passed away in 2017 after a late career surge that saw him finally find the commercial success that had long eluded him. "Black Velvet", his second and final posthumous set, draws on material recorded with long-term producer Tommy "TNT" Brenneck over the course of his career. Much of the material is either exceedingly rare (see his covers of songs by Nirvana, Neil Young and Rodriguez, as well as a sought-after funk duet with LaRose Jackson) or previously unreleased (see "Can't Fight The Feeling", "Fly Little Girl" and the never-before-heard "full band" take on Bradley classic "Victim of Love"). More importantly, it's all exceptionally good, making this a fitting farewell to Floridian soul singer.

Review: Canada's Unidisc has got a bunch of classic disco reissues arriving this summer and they don't get much more classic than Jocelyn Brown's Somebody Else's Guy. Not only is this the name of one of her biggest ever smash hit singles but also of her debut album from 1990. The lead single climbed high in US and UK charts and still soundtracks drunken wedding parties and parochial club nights up and down the land every single weekend. The rest of the tracks on the album are no slouch either, with Jocelyn's belting soul vocals front and centre over plenty of catchy grooves.

Review: Like many previously forgotten or overlooked albums of the 1970s, Joseph "Coke" Escovodo's second solo album, Comin' At Ya, has been repeatedly mined for samples over the course of the last 40 years. While some often-sampled sets are a bit sketchy, Comin' At Ya is the real deal - a superb set of funk-fuelled, Latin-fired fusions of soul, jazz-funk and disco that benefits greatly from both the impressive production of synthesizer pioneer Patrick Gleeson and the breathlessly brilliant rhythms provided by percussionist Escovodo. The album also features wonderful lead vocals from Courtial's Errol Knowles and top-notch sax work from Joe Henderson. For this edition, it's also been fully remastered and pressed to weighty, audiophile-friendly wax, making this a must-check for serious funk fans and hip-hop DJs alike.

King Most - "Kiss The Girls (& Make Them Cry" (4:24)
Review: This superb new 7" from Private Stock Records is both banging and sexy. The opening side has 'Slapture' and finds Daniel Crawford and Amber Navran flipping an iconic original hip-hop joint and smoothing it out into something that teases and pleases above plenty of slapping Stro Elliot with adds extra allure. On the flip, King Most's 'Kiss The Girls (& Make Them Cry) is a mix of digital synths and languid bass with a lute grove and hooky vocals all working to get you in the mood. Both sides are great additions to your shelves.

Dabeull follows up a string of recent EPs with yet another to renew his credibility as a leading electro-funk producer-entrepreneur. Owing to his own preference for making music entirely on analog gear, his latest LP Analog Love flaunts this love and then some, laying down nine wet, delectable dancefloor dynamos and enlisting the likes of Rude Jude, Reva DeVito, Ferdi and Holybrune on vocal duties to back it up. Heralding an upcoming 100% live version of the album to come, we know Dabeull means it when he says 100% analogue: we don't take those words lightly round here.

Dego's latest album is a focused, strip down affair that benefits greatly from extensive lead vocals courtesy of his latest collaborator, rising star Samii. As you'd expect, a few other 2000 Black regulars (Matt Lord, Mr Mensah and Kaidi Tatham) also lend a hand here and there, adding extra layers of warming, jazz-funk influenced musicality to a set rooted in broken beat, modern soul and the jazzier end of the dancefloor spectrum. Highlights come thick and fast, with our picks of an inspired bunch including acid-flecked, deep broken soul number 'En Route', the classic Kaidi and Dego style jazz-funk business 'Proxima Centauri', the sun-soaked brilliance of 'Warp 7' and the neo-boogie excellence of 'Don't Stall'.

Review: Ed Black, aka "edbl," is an increasingly prominent hip-hop and R&B artist and composer who has emerged from South London's indie music scene alongside luminaries like Jorja Smith and Jamie Isaac. His sound, a blend of lo-fi soul and hip-hop akin to Jordan Rakei and Tom Misch, garnered attention when Spotify UK featured him on their New Music Friday cover. Additionally, Music Business Worldwide Magazine nominated him as one of The Hottest Independent Artists In The World and now he backs up that potential with 'The Way Things Were,' featuring the mellifluous vocals of Isaac Waddington.

Children Of The Night (7" edit) (4:49)
Review: Eon was a disco, funk and soul group from New Jersey that was active in the late 70s. Members Daniel Anderson, Jay Borrerro, Raymond Orta and Robert Remming please two albums - both, rather confusing, were self-titled - in 1975 and 1978 and just four EPs. This double-sided 7" was their debut and now gets a special limited edition reissue for 2024's Record Store Day. 'We'll Go On' kicks off with some feel good pianos and big horn energy and funk basslines, then 'Children Of The Night' offers more rich but more sentimental soul sounds that get you where it hurts.

Review: If you, like us, like to reach for seasonal records at this time of year but can't often find things that aren't too cheesy, then hold tight: Kelly Finnigan's second album is full of holiday sounds with members of Durand Jones & The Indications and The Dap-Kings helping her cook up a warming, fire-side soul sound that you'll have on repeat all December. Inspired by records like Phil Spector's A Christmas Gift For You, this is a lovely affair with heart swelling vocals, 60s sounding hooks and nice rolling rhythm that are perfectly gentle as background music, but also striking when you give them your full attention.

Feelin' Kinda Funky (T-groove remix) (4:31)
Review: UK soul wooer Angie Gooden drops fresh, city-slanging, romantic magic with 'All Day Long', her new 7" for Six Nine Records. The contemporary soul number is a longing paean for a renewed love - "you've got me craving you all day long... dreaming, fantasizing, anticipating". You get the gist - it is an insatiable track, much like how insatiable we are for it. The B also houses T-Groove's instrumental remix of Gooden's 'Feelin' Kinda Funky', which is essentially a harder-edged dub version of the A.

Review: Don't take our word for it; the one-and-only Bill Brewster himself described the enigmatic Guruku's 'Love Runaway' (featuring Tamara Lee) as an absolutely essential release that channels Prelude Records circa 1982, and was equally impressed by Ray Mang's stellar remix. The late night, neon-lit dancefloor moves of the original receive not one, but two makeovers by UK disco don Mang, the main one reworking those boogie-down vibes into something even more magical. It's followed by a more drum heavy Reprise, while slick second offering 'Crimped Hair' features LA funk/R&B artist Harriet Brown providing guest vocals.

Review: Japanese nu-jazz doesn't get any more smouldering than this deep cut from Yusuke Hirado featuring Lil Summer on vocal duties. 'Fly Away' is a mellow melter thanks in no small part to the moody strings lingering behind Hirado's fluid funk production. It's a downtempo vibe which calls to mind the UK street soul sound, contrasted by B-side joint 'Dear Limmertz' which has a more jazz funk oriented flavour. Both joints won't let you down when you want to set the mood as smooth as possible - with a seasoned pro like Hirado at the controls, what else would you expect?

Review: Expansions' latest essential reissue takes us back to 1980 and the much sought after seven-inch edition of singer Ty Karim's collaboration with lesser-known soul man George Griffin. "Keep On Doin' Whatcha' Doin'" was written and produced by Karim's other half Kent Harris and, like the original seven inch, appears here in two parts. The glorious A-side version is a lolloping chunk of disco-era sweet soul rich in soaring orchestration, fluttering flutes and Marvin Gaye/Tammi Tyrell style duet vocals from Karim and Griffin. Part two focuses more on the killer groove and the duo's impassioned improvised vocalizations, with a variety of tasty solos helping to whip things into a mid-tempo dancefloor frenzy.

Review: Legendary Miami songstress Gwen McCrae had plenty of huge hits in her arsenal, from '90% Of Me Is You' to 'It's Worth The Hurt.' Her biggest tune by far is the enduring classic and sure fire dance floor heater 'Keep The Fire Burning.' The strident disco funk beats, the soaring vocal and the impossible warmth and soul of it all never fail to make a mark. Here it is backed with the more slow and deep cut funk of 'Funky Sensation,' which gets those hips swinging and hands clapping.

P-Vine in Japan have put this one out on CD before now but do the right thing and issue it once more here on vinyl. It's a classic album from the five-piece soul vocal fronted by Phil Perry who is still in the game as a solo artist. The band hailed from St. Louis, Missouri with a soul sound so rich and distinctive you will fall in love with it from the first harmony. Perry's own falsetto is the defining feature here with sumptuous strings and sublime rhythms helping him to soar to magical emotional heights. The original Dreaming Out Of Season album came on Paula (Jewell) Records in 1972.

Review: Sam Don (the man behind recent lovers' rock and UK soul comps For The Love of You and Just A Touch) kicks off his brand new label Sweet Free Association with a reissue that takes us all the way back to 1984. The artist behind it, keyboardist and composer Carl Moore, only pressed up 100 copies of this when he put it out back then so it is a truly rare and coveted 7" that comes from a man who went on to be associated with peers with artists such as Phyllis Hyman, Janet Jackson and James Cleveland. The tune is an energetic and upbeat one with carefree grooves, nostalgia for teenage loves and plenty of great vocals from Moore.

Magic's In The Air
Could Heaven Ever Be Like This
Review: It was certainly unpredictable that a legendary jazz drummer would record one of spiritual disco's most revered songs twenty-three years into his career, but that's exactly what happened when Idris Muhammad laid down the epic "Could Heaven Ever Be Like This" in 1977. Hailing from New Orleans, Muhammad always had more than a touch of funk to his rhythms, and by the late '70s his collaborations with master engineer Rudy Van Gelder on recordings for the CTI and Kudu labels had gelled perfectly with the reigning jazz-funk sound of the day. Arranger Dave Matthews (famously part of the James Brown stable) collaborated with lyricist and former Long Island record store clerk Tony Sarafino on writing the song, which on the original recording unfolds over a nearly 9-minute build. Appearing at the crest of the disco movement, "Could Heaven Ever Be Like This" was an immediate hit with David Mancuso and the attendees of his loft parties, quickly spreading to other venues and even making a small climb up the Billboard R&B charts. For this new issue on Most Excellent Unlimited, Danny Krivit, whose own career as a dancefloor orchestrator from the DJ booth has paralleled the timeframe of the song's existence, has replaced the original loose introduction with a mix-friendly steady groove that maintains the unstoppable pulse of the song while maintaining the cathartic mid-song break and giving the track potential for even more momentum.

Another percussionist is responsible for our flip side track, "Magic's in the Air." Vince Montana was not only an in-house arranger and producer for Philadelphia International and other Philly soul labels, but was an accomplished vibraphone player. His talents are on display and doubly emphasized by Mr. K in this overlooked cut from Ronnie Walker, a falsetto singer who draws a rather strong comparison to the best songs of fellow Philadelphians Blue Magic with this uptempo, subtly synthy 1975 track. Never having appeared on a 12-inch, and indeed never having appeared even on a full-length album, Krivit's edit is the first extended mix of "Magic's in the Air" to date. Alongside "Could Heaven Ever Be Like This," itself notoriously difficult to find in 12-inch form, this latest from MEU's long running series with Mr. K is a bonafide must-have for the discerning DJ.

Review: Junior Parker's Love Ain't Nothin' But A Business Goin' On reissue on Mr Bongo's Groove Merchant Records is a treasure trove of funk, soul, and blues that showcases Parker's undeniable talent and enduring legacy. Originally released in 1970 under the title The Outside Man and later reissued with the iconic car cover in 1971, this album captures Parker's buttery vocals and soulful grooves at their finest. From smokey blues to raw funk outings and orchestrated soul ballads, Parker effortlessly navigates through various musical styles with finesse. The album's standout feature is its three Beatles cover versions, including 'Taxman', 'Lady Madonna', and 'Tomorrow Never Knows'. Parker's reinterpretation of these classics breathes new life into them, infusing elements of New Orleans funk, psychedelic soul, and funky blues. The influence of Parker's music is undeniable, with his tracks being sampled by iconic artists such as A Tribe Called Quest, DJ Shadow, and De La Soul. His ability to blend genres and create timeless grooves solidifies his status as a Blues Hall of Fame inductee and a legend in the music industry.

Por Amor (7" mix)
Por Amor (dub mix)
Review: Comb Edits is, at least in our world, officially the best thing to come out of Norwich since Colman's Mustard (or perhaps Justin Fashanu). The hush-hush project has been serving up occasional must-have re-edits for a while, with some of their earliest releases becoming in-demand items on the second-hand market. 'Por Amor', which opened the mystery editor's first EP in 2021, is probably the most sought-after scalpel job of the lot. It's a light-touch rework of a gorgeous slow-motion and sun-splashed Latin cover of a Bobby Caldwell classic - the kind of thing that disco, soul and Balearic heads will love. This reissue presents two new tweaks: a slightly shortened (but no less gorgeous 7"-mix), and a stripped-back, bass-heavy and delay-laden 'dub mix' that's especially essential. Don't sleep!

If I Could Only Be Sure (3:21)
Review: Two sides, two years, two source labels: This powerful soul blast 45 captures two sides of LA songwriter Nolan's criminally short recording career. The A is his famous northern soul / Joy Division-riffed favourite "Keep On Keeping On" from 71 on cult soul imprint Lizard while the B "If I Could Only Be Sure" is a smoother R&B cut from his time on MCA's ABC imprint. Loose limbed feel good funk and swooning bluesy soul with big harmonies, this represents Nolan's diverse range with respect and timelessness.

Review: Famously returning to the game he was part of right back in the late 80s, Brian Power released his first album last year at the age of 54. Now back with his first new material since then, he's not messing around. Featuring long standing Muthafunka Marc Evans, "Falling Back Into Love" is a sprightly sunny side soulful house gem loaded with timeless appeal and emotion. And if that's not enough, the legend that is DJ Spen has supplied his own edit for the B. Feel the love!

Review: Given the stone-cold-classic status of Patrice Rushen's disco-era recordings on Elektra, it's little surprise to see Strut offering up this superb retrospective of that key period in her career. Naturally, the big club hits are present - "Feels So Real (Can't Let Go)", "Haven't You Heard", "Number One" and "Forget Me Nots" - but it's the quality of the lesser celebrated cuts and album tracks that most impresses. For proof, check the sharp horns and good grooves of "Look Up (Extended Version)", the breezy boogie bounce of "Never Gonna Give You Up (Won't Let You be)" and the electric piano solo-laden seductiveness of "Remind Me (LP Version)". There's naturally plenty of sweet slow jams to savour, too, those to our ears these pale in comparison to Rushen's dancefloor-focused output.
