White Hot

Basement Freaks - "White Hot" (feat Kylie Auldist - Basement Freaks remix) (3:39)
John Turrell - "Won't Get Fooled Again" (Basement Freaks remix) (4:20)
Review: Fizzing funkateers Basement Freaks can usually be relied upon to bring the dancefloor goods. That's certainly the case on this dancefloor-focused seven-inch. On the A-side they rework one of their own classic cuts, offering a punchier and heavier take on 2016 Kylie Auldist collaboration "White Hot". Rich in flash-friend funk guitars, crunchy breaks and life-affirming horns, their new revision is undoubtedly more DJ-friendly than the original album version. Turn to the flip to hear their tidy new take on Smoove collaborator John Turrell's 2013 cut "Won't Get Fooled Again", which they cannily refurbish as a wobble bass-propelled chunk of P-funk flavoured dancefloor soul.

Rene Costy - "Scrabble"
Jay Dee - "Fuck The Police"
Review: If you were lucky enough to snap up that Dee Edwards and Pilooski seven inch with the familiar logo that proved so massively popular over the summer months then you'll know the drill with this latest 45 from the Originals camp. On the A Side you get "Scrabble", Rene Costy's masterful slice of library funk that is complemented on the flip by the classic Motor City boombap of "F*ck The Police" by the sadly departed J Dilla which of course expertly pilfered the stuttering break.

Review: Following the huge buzz of the limited promo-press (500 copies) we are now coming with a fully legit version of "The Mexican" featuring brand new vocals by Berlin singer Sara Bourgois! Marc Hype and Jim Dunloop have created a real monster with their 100% sample-free take on "The Mexican". With full emphasis on the breaks and the keys, Hype & Dunloop leave out the all too rocky moments and add some funky samba soul.

Nothing Wrong With Holding On
Nothing Wrong With Holding On (Soul Clap Jungle mix)
Nothing Wrong With Holding On (Maurice Aymard remix)
Review: Fledgling Barca based label Apersonal deliver their third release of the winter and the standard set by the initial Trujillo 12" featuring Mark E and Social Disco Club remixes is more than maintained here. Venturing across the Atlantic for the first time, the label has secured some blissful late night house movements from Michael J Collins - surely the most Balearic name on the circuit right now - who really impressed with his Ilija Rudman remix on Electric Minds earlier this summer. Driven by broken house rhythms and some neat Fulton style hand claps, "Nothing Wrong With Holding On" is a delightfully idiosyncratic departure from the normal nu-disco template. Heavily phased saxophone lines cross with looped vocal chants atop the warm electro bassline with a panache you'd expect from someone who has featured on Wolf & Lamb. Keeping things close Boston's greatest Soul Clap are on the flip with a remix that adds some urgency to the tempo but retains the off key rhythms. Sumptuous Detroit style pads drenched with emotion rise gradually through and there's a rather tasty percussion heavy breakdown midway through. A big tip!

Horror Games (3:43)
Horror Games (instrumental) (3:41)
Review: Teddy Powell and Zee Desmondes are The Jack Moves, a contemporary disco and hip hop outfit who here link with unknown newbies The People Of Newark and Larry Hamm for this tidy new 7" on Star Creature. 'Horror Games' has a squelchy synth bass line that carries the loose drum work and bustling methane of background vocals and found sounds. A lead singer takes charge up top as various chatting crowds play out in the background. It's a busy tune that also comes as an instrumental for those who prefer the focus to be on the well crafted drums and bass.

LaRose Jackson - "How Did I Get Here?" (2:39)
Menahan Street Band - "How Did I Get Here?" (2:40)
Review: The superbly classy Daptone label comes on strong with another perfect formed 7" of retro soul. This time, the label's in house crew Menahan Street Band provide their famously authentic grooves, with big horns, rolling licks and drawn out leads on 'How Did I Get Here?' which on the a-side has vocals from LaRose Jackson. Soaring high and filled with rich soul, it's another timeless tune. On the flip is the instrumental. It's a story telling tune with some cosmic synth work and nice old school tambourines for an old/new fusion that gets you movin'.

Review: Its origin unknown here as two classic cuts from the Bob James canon get the edit treatment on a highly limited 45 - strictly for the nimble fingered DJs only. Every man and his funk appreciating dog should be familiar with both "Nautilus" and "Mardi Gras", they are the epitome of 'iconic tracks' and it's nice to see them available on 45 for the first time, edited to give an extra bit of oomph to those breakbeats. Etta James & Sugar Pie Desanto - "In The Basement" (Soul Flip edit) (3:20)
John Gary Williams - "My Sweet Lord" (Soul Flip edit) (3:59)
Review: On their latest limited edition salvo, the hardworking Soul Flip crew (AKA experienced DJs and producers Aldo Vanucci and Del Gazeebo) gets to work on two more stomping dancefloor cuts from the golden age of soul. First up on side A is a gently tooled-up and tightened up take on Etta James and Sugar Pie DeSanto's 1966 floor-heater "In The Basement", a hybrid soul-jazz/rhythm and blues jam rich in rubbery double bass, bustling drums, restless handclaps and brilliant lead vocals from the two legendary soul singers. On the flip they tackle Memphis musician John Gary Williams' 1972 cover of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord", which brilliantly re-imagines the former Beatles' spiritual song as a sweaty gospel-soul stomper.

Etta James - "Seven Day Fool" (3:00)
Doug Banks - "I Just Kept On Dancing" (2:33)
Review: Soul Tribe celebrate the epic legacy of Chess subsidiary Argo with two of the label's many outstanding soul burners. Etta's big swing sauce-pot number takes pride of place with all 55 years of sultry devotion still deeply embedded into the recording. Banks' slightly lesser known pastoral ballad sets up camp on the B. Lilting and lolloping with horseback storytelling, it's the perfect foil both musically and narratively.

What Do You Want Me To Do (edit) (4:24)
Review: Athens of the North is continually one of our favourite labels here at Juno HQ. The Edinburgh based outlet's tireless mission to unearth forgotten gems or shine a light on deserving tracks that may have been overlooked cannot be faulted. This time out Christopher Jay's 'What Do You want Me To Do' from 1987 gets served up on its own 45rpm. It is a glorious bit of disco boogie with a rugged broken beat, funk in the bass and soul in the buttery vocal. On the flip is a subtle edit that hits just as sweet a spot and it comes with a nice picture sleeve, too.

Make Me Believe In You (Tom Moulton remix) (6:28)
Ain't No Love Lost (Tom Moulton remix) (5:47)
Review: Should you require further evidence of the all-round genius of Curtis Mayfield, look no further than this early '70s funk gem from Patti Jo. "Make Me Believe In You" was written and produced by the velvety-voiced musician in 1973, one of just a few singles released by Patti Jo but undoubtedly now an all-time classic. That rolling drum intro, the ear-wagging piano, the subtle orchestration and, above all, Patti Jo's killer vocal all combine for a perfect example of the halcyon days when funk was beginning to transform into disco. Mayfield himself later covered the track for the closer to his Sweet Exorcist LP! This BGP 7" sees Tom Moulton's extension of "Make Me Believe In You" combined with his remix of the other Patti Jo burner, "Ain't No Love Lost". Any self-respecting DJ needs the A-side though.

The Indications - "Tuck 'N' Roll" (2:49)
Review: Authentic soul business from Bloomington newbies The Indications brought to you by the good people at Colemine Records. Teaming up with Durand Jones for the A-side, "Smile" is a powerful preachy cut that digs deep into the classic funk mentality while sitting neatly upside the grills of Aloe Blacc or Gnarls Barkley. "Tuck N Roll", meanwhile, is a Meters-level slice of smouldering instrumental funk with big cymbal splashes and a blissful balance of Rhodes and guitar. Spotless.

Josephine Jones - "Candy Man" (2:51)
Raw Soul - "Just Walk Funky" (2:38)
Review: TRAMP Records' latest must-have "45" is an incendiary double-header of killer cuts. On the A-side you'll find "Candy Man", the suitably obscure sole single from Josephine Jones. It's a lolloping, lo-fi soul affair, with Jones' distinctive vocals rising above the kind of head-nodding breaks, heavy bass and clipped guitar riffs that will get hip-hop DJs hot under the collar. Turn to the flip for another chance to savour Raw Soul's "Just Walk Funky", a track recorded in their home town of Norfolk, Virginia in the early 1970s that went unissued until Put released it in 2009. It remains a tidy chunk of off-kilter instrumental funk rich in intricate guitar licks, booming bass and fizzing drums.

What If We All Stopped Paying Taxes? (4:40)
This Land Is Your Land (4:28)
Review: Daptone recently released a killer collection of archival cover versions by in-house band the Dap-Kings and their sadly departed lead singer Sharon Jones. One of the headline attractions on that set, the band's righteous, call-to-arms soul version of Woody Guthrie's folk anthem 'This Land Is Our Land', is also featured on this must-have reissue of a "45" that first dropped in 2004. It's superb, but even better is A-side 'What If We All Stopped Paying Taxes?', a floor-friendly conscious soul/funk crossover written and recorded at the height of the second Gulf War with Iraq. As usual, Jones' impeccable lead vocal is supported brilliantly by the band's fiery instrumentation and Bosco Mann's fuzzy, sixties-style production.

How Long Do I Have To Wait For You? (vocal mix) (4:03)
How Long Do I Have To Wait For You? (instrumental) (2:58)
Review: Remarkably, 16 years have passed since Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings first released 'How Long Do I Have To Wait', one of the revivalist soul and funk band's sweetest and most heartfelt songs. Written and produced by Dap-Kings main man Bosco Mann, the song features one of Jones' most evocative and impassioned lead vocals, as well as a pleasingly laidback, loose-limbed groove, jazzy guitars and pitch-perfect horn blasts. As it did back in 2004, this reissue pairs the peerless vocal version with Mann's typically fuzzy, lovingly crafted instrumental take. If you missed out first time round, make sure you grab a copy.

Review: Australian blog Disco Delicious has already dipped it's toes into the record label waters with the launch of Death Strobe last year and it's a label you should check, not least because Erol Alkan was dropping tracks from their second release during his recent Antipodean tour. The obvious passion for music demonstrated on the website should also ensure that the quality delivered on this twelve from Joystick Jay, the debut release on their new edit label is retained for future drops. Rich in an international flavour all too absent from the majority of edit releases these days, the Danish producer digs up a mind bogglingly good Fela Kuti rarity on the A Side, whilst the B Side holds a smooth South American disco yacht jam infused with subtle filtration and a delightfully soothing African communal track. Recommended for those who like to veer off the beaten track.

Cold Diamond & Mink - "Devoted To You" (instrumental) (3:50)
Review: The Finish scene owes a lot to the Timmion label and this is further proof why. Carlton Jumel Smith returns to the label with another of his infectiously groovy and romantic offerings. This contemporary soul star won plenty of fans over with his last album for the 1634 Lexington Ave. label and now he's back with a trilogy of new tunes. The first is 'Devoted To You' on this 7" and it is a gorgeous affair with languid horns and seductive acoustic guitars while the soaring vocals bring realness and rawness. On the flip is a stripped back instrumental that allows the musician to really breath.

Review: Junior & The Classics dropped these super heavy funk cuts on Lenny LaCour's Magic Touch label and now Tramp reissues them for us all to enjoy once more. This is the first time they have been available on 45rpm and first up is 'Kill The Pain.' It's a raw one with big breaks and lung-busting lyrics next to horns to make you spin. 'Mix Up' (A Go Go) is another one that rustles up a raucous funk vibe with layers of busy drums, wooden percussion and vocals that have a hint of 60s swing and soul to them.

Robert Parker - "Barefootin'" (2:36)
Jesse Gresham Plus 3 - "Shootin' The Grease" (2:22)
Review: During the 1950s and '60s, Robert Parker was one of New Orleans most prolific rhythm and blues musicians, appearing on records alongside the likes of Fats Domino, Professor Longhair and Huey 'Piano' Smith. His biggest solo hit was undoubtedly the brilliant 1966 deep funk shuffler "Barefootin", which was the headline attraction from his debut solo album of the same name. Here it gets a welcome re-release, alongside Jesse Graham Plus 3's lesser-known "Shootin' The Grease", a tasty fusion of low-slung R&B guitar riffs, Hammond organs and simple-but-effective drum breaks. While not as well regarded as the infamous A-side, it's arguably an even heavier tune.

The a-side 'Iron Warrior' has a 60s style psyched funk guitar lead with crisp wooden drum hits and a low-slung and languid bassline. The vocals are contemporary and muse on race and identity. Burnt Toast & Black Coffee

Shorty Long - "Burnt Toast & Black Coffee"
Johnny Wells - "Lonely Moon"
Review: Two stone cold classics back to back from Jazzman sub label Popcorn, and two songs which really encapsulate the heart of the Popcorn sound. A few years ago, Mike Pedicin's "Burnt Toast & Black Coffee" crossed over from its confines in the Belgian Popcorn scene to become a major record across the Mod, Northern and Rockin' scenes worldwide. A little less known, but still a killer spin, here is the original version, recorded a couple of years prior by Shorty Long. A more swinging affair, with a crooning vocal and huge band arrangements, this still packs a serious punch on the floor. If anything, Johnny Wells' "Lonely Moon" is an even more perfect example of what the Popcorn sound is all about. A dynamic hybrid of styles - high production values - soaring strings and all - a slow but beating, swinging rhythm, and a laid back, lounge stylised vocal all pull together to give this moody little number a hefty helping of something which is intrinsic to Popcorn ... character!

Vulture's Prayer (4:13)
Bad Vibrations (4:19)
Review: Featuring members of Timmion's latest house band, Cold Diamond & Mink, but pre-dating the foundation of that combo by many years, The Soul Investigators are Finland's longest-serving soul band of note. The collective has been going since the mid 1990s and over the years has worked with all manner of neo-soul artists. Here they join forces with an old pal, eccentric lounge-jazz veteran Jimi Tenor, for two laidback soul instrumentals. This time round, there's no singing from Tenor; instead, he delivers a couple of atmospheric, elongated flute solos. You'll find his distinctive work on both the atmospheric, vibraphone-sporting 'Vulture's Prayer', and 'Bad Vibrations', a funk-tinged slab of horizontal instrumental soul that's as breezy as an autumnal morning in Helsinki.

Review: Freestyle mainstays Speedometer are back... And they're brandishing a brand new album. "No Turning Back" is the lead title track. Featuring velvet vocals and sharp scat spits from James Junior, it's a soft-but-stern statement of intent that drags us in gradually and refuses to let us go once we're hooked. Those hungry for Speedometer's more upbeat party feels, flip for "Orisha's Party" where the groove is so tight and fizzy you can't but think of MJ's "Wanna Be Startin' Something". For good measure, The Reflex has also joined the party with a luxurious extended house shakedown that's primed for the season and beyond.

"Pay Me Back My Money" stretches funk's most famous band leader out to include bags of space and even a touch of jazz as subtle keys are thrown deep into the background. "Funky Drummers In A Space Suit" ups the originality stakes even further with a dreamy harp-strummed arpeggio and trippy snippets that, if you didn't know the title, you'd be hard pushed to identify them. Proof that sampling culture still has heaps to give, Tall Black Guy can do no wrong right about now.

Review: Keeping up with the output of The James Taylor Quartet has always been a tricky task, not least because the long-serving outfit has released an insane number of albums since making their debut in 1987. They also steadfastly refuse to stick to one style, with early forays into acid jazz and jazz-funk later making way for soundtrack sounds, soul-jazz and quirky Library sounds. On Man In The Hotseat, organist Taylor and his bandmates take aim at soul and funk-fired film soundtracks of the 1960s and '70s, delivering an excitable, widescreen epic performed with the assistance of an orchestra. It's naturally accurately rendered - Taylor clearly has a deep love of these kinds of soundtracks - and brilliantly performed, making it a must-check future classic.

Elmore Judd is the alter ego of one Jesse Hackett - brother of Louis Slipperz, keyboard player for Raw Dog and co-producer of many of Taskforce's works. Elmore Judd recently visited Mali (West Africa) with a group of musicians including Damon Alban (Gorillaz), Scratch (The Roots) and Jamie T. During his stay there he had the chance to play with some of the leading names in Mali music. "Insect Funk" is a top new release on Honest Jon's.
