Review: Martin Perna's infamous Antibalas crew, or 'bulletproof' as we like to call them, have been one of the most consistent sources of quality afrobeat since the late 90s, first coming through on the then fledgling Ninja Tune, out of the UK. Over the last five years, Brooklyn's ever-impressive Daptone Records have snapped them up, with this new album, Where The Gods Are In Peace, being the group's second LP for the afro powerhouse label. "Gold Rush" opens with a frenetic, supremely funky ode to Fela, all nervous and cosmic, followed by the comparatively deeper and more laid-back groove of "Hook & Crook". "Tombstone", on the B-side, receives three mixes, each of them featuring Zap Mama on the vocals - the deepest shade of afrobeat you'll find out here. Antibalas gives us hope that new music can be just as powerful as the original material from the 70s. 10/10.

Review: On Where The Gods Are In Peace, their first album for five years, long-serving NYC Afrobeat revivalists Antibalas return to Daptone with fellow veterans Zapa Mama in tow. The all-female Belgian combo provides vocals on album centrepiece "Tombstown", a suite of track in three distinctive "Movements". All three parts, which are drenched in reverb and delay and operate at a far slower tempo than much of Antibalas's output, are decidedly cosmic in tone, with greater percussive intricacy, subtle Afro-jazz influences and an impressive variety of instrumental solos. Of course, it wouldn't be an Antibalas album without a rousing dancefloor epic or two, and happily both the Fela Kuti style "Gold Rush" and funk-fuelled "Hook & Crook" tick that particular box.

Review: Look into Charles's history and you'll find he's been a victim of much more than love over the years. Now in his mid 60s, his recording career only really began in earnest 10 years ago. Criminal, really... But the best talent always gets recognised eventually, and Daptone are doing him some serious fast-track justice. Highlights include the country-inspired strumming and harmonies on the album title track, the belting horn-swing of "You Put The Flame On It", the sadder trumpet, alto sax and Hammon cannon melody on "Dusty Blues" and the blend of slamming northern soul style drums and head-bending psychedelia of "Confusion". Don't be a victim: feel the love today.

Review: As ably teased with their cheeky limited 7" earlier this month, the Staten Island 10-piece let loose with their fourth studio album. Still tighter than a squid's spy hole, still oozing international instrumental allure that will resonate with fans as wide as Fela Kuti and Babe Ruth, still awesome! Each track is an emphatic narrative told with real drama. Wig out to the bluesy, fuzzy displays of Sabbathian guitar domination on "Aphasia", get freaky to the aquatic Afro jazz of "Shattered Winds", immerse yourself in the wild Emerson-style keyboard freneticism and become hypnotised by the writhing snake-like trumpet lead on "Tomahawk". Truly, Burnt Offering will scorch your speakers.

Review: The Budos band might sound like they were from the '70s and hailed from Nigeria, but they're actually live and kicking these days around the Greater New York area. The majority of their music has come out thanks to Gabriel Roth's sublime Daptone Records, which also seen a vast number of incredible reissues land on its catalogue. "Maelstrom" is the lead tune on this fine 7", an instantly seductive psych track who electric guitar will have you shivering from head to toes from the very first verse - a total killer of a tune! "Avalanche", on the flip, isn't as visionary or grandiose in sound, but it is still perfectly capable of making you shed a tear thanks to its driving horns and hazy flutters of FX-laden guitar flying around like UFOs. Warmly tipped.

Review: The Como Mamas are a gospel trio from Como, Mississippi. On their third album entitled Move Upstairs they are backed by The Glorifiers Band, consisting of top Daptone musicians Homer Steinweiss, Thomas Brennbeck, Bosco Mann, and Jimmy Hill. The result is an album of raw soulful traditional gospel like you've never heard before. Angelia growls the lead on "Move Upstairs," which shuffles down the line like a freight train. On the flip, Della counts her blessings over a grinding four minutes of gospel-funk. Amen, sisters.

Review: Gospel/funk fusionists the Como Mamas debuted on Daptone back in 2013 with Get An Understanding, a fine full-length that perfectly showcased the female trio's talents. While that set was recorded live at Mt Merrion Church some years earlier, this fine follow-up is a studio set with Daptone chief Bosco Mann in the producer's chair. Unsurprisingly, it's deliciously authentic, sounding like a long lost 1970s, private press gospel-soul album. It's packed with highlights, from the bluesy shuffle of "He's Calling Me" and rhythm and blues bounce of "He's Mine", to the acapella brilliance of "Glory Glory Hallelujah", where the trio's brilliant vocals and a lone drumbeat combine to create an intoxicating mood.

Rich, warm instrumentation, bitter sweet falsetto vocals and production that doffs its cap to Studio 1, this is the ultimate version. And it comes with its own version, too... A neat dubbed out nodder with ghostly shades of the vocal peppering the groove for good measure. Remarkable roots business.

Review: Gabriel Roth and Neal Sugarman's Daptone label is always right on-point when it comes to funky Afro beats, and disco-flavoured dance music, and aside from releasing a whole breadth of new talent in that field, they two dudes have also resurrected plenty of golden material from the 70's and 80's, including our all-time favourite Soul Explosion by The Daktaris. The inimitable James Junter Six are back for the imprint's latest release, coming through with a sweet n' soulful soul album with plenty of psych and ska influences - the aptly named Hold On! Organs flying from side to side, a gorgeous selection of deep, coarse vocals, and plenty of stunning, intimate moments for the lovers. A peach.

Review: Female vocalist Sharon Jones continues to fly the flag for raw femme funk with her fifth album for US label Daptone, ably assisted by the labels in-house band - The Dap Kings. The new record is a collection of rare tracks and B-Sides going back as far as 2002. The only new track appears to be the Motown-esque "New Shoes", which, like the rest of the album, could be mistaken as a lost soul classic.

Sharon's catchy melodic vocal on ''Better Things'' is assisted by rhythmic hand claps, cascading piano lines, brass stabs and backing vocals from The Dapkings. On the flipside is a silky deep soul cut with Sharon's vocals telling the tale of her wandering eyed window shopping man!

Review: Revivalist funk and soul veterans Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings appeared to have drawn the curtain down on their career back in 2011, with the release of the well-timed retrospective Soul Time. Happily, they were just on hiatus, and three years on return with their first album of new material since 2010. For those who enjoy their sweet, soulful, faithful recreation of original '60s and '70s soul, this should be cause for rejoicing. Certainly, Give The People What They Want lives up to its title, delivering a blend of strong songs, heart-aching lyrics, nostalgic production and superb playing.

Review: The recent passing of legendary soul singer Sharon Jones lends extra potency to Miss Sharon Jones, a recently released documentary movie chronicling her long, but ultimately unsuccessful battle with pancreatic cancer - a fight she fought whilst continuing to tour the World with her long-time backing band, the Dap Kings. This double-vinyl soundtrack album is as fitting tribute as any, given that it includes material recorded and released over the two decades she spent working with the Daptone Records family. There's also the heart aching, and previously unreleased, "His Eye On The Sparrow", which was recorded especially for the film in Jones' local church in Augusta, Georgia.

Review: 1970's The Olympians came at the height of the Greek ensemble's popularity, and at a point where pop music was making its way into the mainstream through all sorts of subgenres. By that, we mean that this particular album is seeped in a distinctly jazzy kind of vibe, one which makes it both singular in its approach, but also very representative of the era in which it was conceived. Cool, sexy and laid-back, these eleven tracks a truly soulful in every sense of the word but, the interesting thing about them is that their not the usual US kind of sound; you can tell that there is something different in here, something European and a bit more wide-eyed to the choice of sounds and arrangements. Daptone coming through with the quality, as per...

Review: German funk act of legendary proportions, The Poets Of Rhythm arrived at time when the genre was a million miles away from the agenda. Digging deep into the roots with consummate dexterity, at first no one even believed they came from Europe. Morphing and mutating with myriad aliases along the way, the four-piece found themselves on labels as disparate as Gomma, Ninja Tune and Soulcity during their ten year tenure. And this is a collection of their very best moments. Spanning vibes from the screaming sax on the party jam "More Mess On My Thing" to the mournful, far-away flute soliloquy of "Choking On A Piece Of Meat" via the more frenetic bass and organ reflections on "The Donkey", The Poets Of Rhythm knew funk more intimately than most married couples know each other. An essential collection for anyone who's so much as smiled at a trumpet or breakbeat in the last five years.

Review: Saundra Williams and Starr Duncan Lowe have long been part of the extended Daptone family, providing backing vocals for Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings throughout the last decade. Here, the New York-based duo gets a chance to showcase their talents - backed, of course, by the Dap Kings - on a much-deserved debut album. Musically, there are few surprises, with the duo adding their sweet, evocative vocals to backing tracks that doff a cap to the golden age of soul. In other words, it could be a Sharon Jones album, albeit with a baggier, looser feel. This is no bad thing, though; nobody does revivalist, classic-sounding soul as well as the Daptone family, and Look Closer is a hugely enjoyable, lovingly produced set.

Review: Let it be said that Shelton has one of the most distinctive voices in soul right now... The perfect amount of grit and full command, she comes at you like a female James Brown and is complemented perfectly by her golden toned backing crew The Gospel Queens. "Sinner" is laid down over a tight Brother Cliff Driver groove that's rich in groove and soft enough in dynamics to allow the band's vocals to really surge through the mix. "Everybody Knows", meanwhile, is a truly unique fusion of country, rhumba and blues where crisp guitars pluck a sturdy rhythm with Caribbean sentiment while Naomi outlays an emphatic narrative. Sinfully good.

Review: Upfront to Juno, this is some truly irresistible hip swaying instrumental Hammond organ funk heaven from The Sugarman 3, who have been rocking dancefloors since 1998 . With "Dirty Water" we get a 1960's R&B/Mod arrangement with soaring tenor saxophone, while on the flipside there's a low down instrumental funk-inspired blues number, heavy with emotion and screeching at every possible twist and turn.
