Review: Aaron Fletcher and Tim Parkin are 77:78 and they dropped their debut album back in 2018 during a heatwave. It was perfect timing for a record that is scorched and red hot throughout with its throwback 60s beat pop sounds all rich in big hooks and English psychedelia. There are an array of deep and beautiful harmonies throughout the record, elements of tumble down dub and plenty of fragile vocal sounds. Standout include the likes of 'Papers' and the most metro of the lot, 'Love Said (Let's Go).'

Review: It's not often you can legitimately call a record brave. Most of the time, when we use that word it's to describe wildly experimental sonics, cutting edge arrangements and never-heard-before noises. Anna Burch doesn't quite fit those descriptions, not that her unarguably 90s-influenced, Gen X survivalist rock tones don't impress. Nevertheless, she's taking the biggest risk of all on 'If You're Dreaming'; turning to face herself head on, and analyse what she sees. There's catchiness, and a stoner-ish, downtrodden or at least lackadaisical air to the way in which she approaches guitar scuzz and this immediately jumps out and grabs the ears. However, that slightly retro leaning approach to arrangements is contrasted by a very 21st Century take on life's great lessons, losses and triumphs - guiding themes behind much of the songwriting.

Review: Brazilian jazz trio Caixa Cubo are one of the modern scene's most acclaimed outfits. Their latest album arrives in Europe via Heavenly Recordings and it has a sound to match. Made up of Henrique Gomide on keys, Joao Fideles on drums and Noa Stroeter on bass, the group has been awarded scholarships to study at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, Netherlands so spends plenty of time over in Europe as well as back home. Thankfully though, they embrace the rich musical traditions of their home land and fuse elements of Azymuth with darker moods with new school greats like Yussef Kamael to make for a record full of both highs and lows, intense grooves and more laidback tunes.

Review: Australian indie and electro-pop pair Confidence Man made a super fun festival tune with their 2020 single 'First Class Bitch'. Now it gets reworked and remixed into even more playful forms, firstly, twice, by Groove Armada. They go for a subtle pair of reworks with detuned stabs and funky bass. It's a more subdued pair of tunes than you might expect from the big room bros. Heavenly label mates Raf Rundell and Working Men's Club offer much bigger, more club ready sounds with pumping drums and tense vocal loops that cannot fail to get hands skyward.

Review: Chicago multi-instrumentalist Dougie Stu grew up outside of Chicago and he cut his musical teeth in the city's jazz clubs and festivals as a teenager before continuing on to the University of Michigan, where he studied with Detroit jazz royalty, Robert Hurst and Geri Allen - and deepened his practice in Jazz and Contemplative Studies.

Now, based in California, he collaborates within many jazz, hip-hop and experimental music scenes but has embarked on his own album, the spirit of jazz in particular living large within its grooves.

The band features a long list of guests on an equally long list of instruments, but the immediately recognisable guitar stylings of Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker - one of Stuart's biggest influences growing up in Chicago - leave an unmistakable indentation on the sound, The album's title track clocks in somewhere between the squelchy synths of Weather Report and the luxuriant Rhodes piano of mid 70s Miles Davis. 'Nostalgia' is approaching ambient, but its serene glide is very organic and tactile, while 'Scooter Bistro' uses drum & bass rhythms as a starting point for a live, drum-focused slow burner. 'Joy Ride', meanwhile, employs almost proggy, dazzling keys over bustling beat energy. The noddle-phobic might find it a little too demonstrative, but if you love jazz and yearn to hear it alive and kicking in fresh new shapes, this is likely to be right up your street.

Review: Baxter Dury returns with a brand new album, 'I Thought I Was Better Than You,' his seventh studio LP. The pop favourite comes through with an unexpected concept here: aiming at a tone circa 'faux-confrontational', Dury aims to interrogate his heritage in a playful but no less earnest manner, talking openly about the "toxic cocktail of being born into unfortunately fortunate circumstances, with a persuasive surname but no structure or sense of responsibility with which to reap the rewards of it." While being the progeny of Ian Dury might be both a blessing and a curse - and Baxter knows it - the album is well-humoured and full of introspective greats, with 'So Much Money' and 'Celebrate Me' being our highlights.

Review: Baxter Dury has been making superbly loose and laidback sounds for more than 20 years now. Here, Mr Maserati collects some of his famously idiosyncratic sounds from across that long career with plenty of comedown disco sounds and deep, rumbling basslines. There is plenty of wry humour and musical sweetness within the material which is taken from Baxter's six long players. Says the artist, "It's a kind of provincial nod to the music I got into during lockdown because my son was playing it - Frank Ocean, Tyler the Creator and Kendrick Lamar."

Review: It's the era of nepo babies, sure - but few artists have owned up to the phenomenon with a sense of humour, nor properly investigated it in album format. Baxter Dury, the infamous artist whose merits ironically don't exist purely insofar as him being the son of Ian, now makes himself an exception to this rule. The new album I Thought I Was Better Than You is an honest yet well-humoured take on Dury's own fortunate upringing - with highlights like 'Sincere', 'So Much Money' and 'Pale White Nissan' hearing him sift through the memories, with various self-caricatures used to interrogate the double-edged sword of at least partially-inheriting an entertainment brand. It's not just this, though: it's also a rumination Dury's childhood as a whole, being the sonic extension of Dury's 2021 coming-of-age autobiography, Chaise Lounge.

Review: At different times in his life, Baxter Dury has railed against, and embraced, the long shadow cast by his iconic father, Ian. 2021's Chaise Longue book, in which he recounted his - as he puts it - "unfortunately fortunate" childhood - indicated a level of acceptance that had previously eluded him. I Thought I Was Better Than You is, in Dury's words, a musical extension of that. Produced by Paul White and featuring a variety of guests, its blends of laid-back funk, subtle nods to dub, post-punk sensibilities, Chaz Janckel-esque audio imagination and spoken word vocals that - yes - recall his dad at his best, it's a confident, entertaining and lyrically revealing outing of the sort that his old man used to knock out in his sleep.

Review: An autumnal treasure, East Village's Drop Out has spent the past thirty years finding new ears to bewitch and new hearts to melt. The only album from this British four-piece, recorded and released in the early 90s, it's long been considered one of the hidden jewels of its time, and is talked of with hushed reverence by people who know. Bob Stanley of Saint Etienne once called it "an elegy for a particular brand of eighties guitar music, sweet minor chords and Dylanesque lyrics", which captures what makes it so special. One of the many charms of East Village is their various songwriting voices, a tip of the hat, seemingly, to the 60s folk-rock groups who influenced them. The 30th anniversary edition of Drop Out lands in two formats, CD and LP: this LP version features a tip-on style jacket and four-page insert, designed to partner with the 2019 vinyl reissue of their singles and rarities compilation, Hot Rod Hotel.

Review: In previous albums, Gwenno has made music in Cornwall and used the Cornish language in the vocals. Y Dydd Olaf however is entirely sung in Welsh, but for one song in Cornish. It is inspired by a 1976 novel of the same name by Owain Owain that is set in a dystopian future. In that future, robots have enslaved the human race using medication. This album extrapolates that and muses on things such as rising technological inference, patriarchal society, media propaganda, isolation and, naturally, the important roles that minority languages still play. It is now repressed after initially being released in July 2015.

Review: Not named after the notorious-famous Berlin techno institution Tresor, but instead taking its name from 'treasure' in Cornish, Gwenno presents her third full-length studio album, largely written in St. Ives, with most of the words Cornish, too. If that sounds pretty adventurous, then wait until you hear the tracks themselves, which benefit from handiwork by collaborator and friend Rhys Edwards, who is also credited with production of the record.

Introduction over, this is a wildly diverse and spectacularly different album. At times things feel haunting, almost choral. In other moments, we're in a 1960s-hued pop-y place, while work like 'Ardamm' seems born amid the dark room chug of underground goth post punk disco. Overall, it's certainly the artist's most spectacularly idea-filled outing, ensuring nobody is going to forget about it in a hurry.

Review: These Aussie psych-mayhem merchants have set their sights on releasing a terrifying five records this year, and only a fool or a cynic would deny they're capable of it, given the freewheeling abandon and hell-for-leather chutzpah they've delivered on each of their ten outings to date. Whilst the majority of bands habitually claim to be pursuing a uniquely uncompromising vision, few are as guileless and full-on as the outfit we feast on via 'Murder Of The Universe', one completely unafraid to deal with four-part sagas concerning Tolkein-esque mythical monsters and Japanese cyborgs via a kinetic and combustible melange of garage fury and third-eye-massaging acid visions. Who knows where King Gizzard are heading, but right-thinking folks will be willing them to keep their foot firmly on the accelerator.

Review: Where would you be without Mark Lanegan? Where would any of us be without Mark Lanegan? Scratch and don't answer that - responses probably depend on personal experiences. Nevertheless, the man once most commonly known as the guy from Screaming Trees is nothing short of vital - incredible songwriter and top drawer musician, with his second album in under six months more than enough evidence to back those claims. In many ways 'Straight Songs Of Sorrow' is an amalgamation of all the artist has done and been before solo, which is saying something given this is studio LP number 12. Lyrically a testament to some of his darkest hours gone by, elements of early, rawer outings are more than audible, with lashings of the synth stuff that has typified later material acting as a counterbalance. Delicate acoustic and string workouts, shades of DNTEL, twisted organ cries and soul searching, dark, alternative rock moods.

Review: Possessed of one of those 'sing the phone book' voices that could extract gravely gravitas even from the back catalogue of Black Lace if he tried, Mark Lanegan might have been forgiven for resting on his considerable laurels, yet instead he's forged foward across each album with innovation and fortitude both - 'Gargoyle', aided and abetted once again by Rob Marshall and Alain Johannes, expands on the electronic textures and handsome melancholy of 2014's 'Phantom Radio', yet roots them in a bluesy grandeur amidst tales of lost love and redemption. With a lightness of touch balanced out against an effortless charisma of delivery, this is proof positive that Lanegan's gloomy charms render him a talent for the ages.

Review: Mark Lanegan's badass demeanour and rich, 40-a-day baritone have ensured that he has a formidable reputation in the realm of school-of-hard-knocks balladry and gritty melancholia, yet Phantom Radio marks a new development for the grizzled troubadour. What's more, it may just have resulted in his greatest triumph yet; taking inspiration this time around from the alternative rock of the '80s rather than the rootsy blues traditionalism of yore, and dealing out emotionally engaging ditties that are as redolent of New Order as Johnny Cash, Lanegan has found a whole new way to wear his trademark black.

Review: Atina 'Mattiel' Brown is a 60s psyche-pop inspiration from Atlanta, Georgia, giving the ears of a modern age a new way to appreciate a lo-fi, garage rock style of storytelling. Satis Factory presents the band with its second album since debuting in 2017 with a self-titled LP, and Brown's voice for Mattiel still reigns supreme in its bluesy, telephone filtered manner. Co-produced by Randy Michael and Jonah Swilley and recorded in their native Atlanta, the vintage touches applied to the band's music sees an authentic blend of deadpan vocals, jangly guitars meet with a touch of spaghetti western, subtle touches of folk and rockabilly, with that perfect smattering of dusty sundown blues.

Return To Centaurus
Review: Irrepressibly funky four-piece Mildlife are back with their third album, Chorus. Steeped in 70s cosmic disco, Italo, Polish jazz and all kinds of good, honest grooves, the Aussie psych fusion outfit take their music to the next level on this incredibly assured follow-up to 2020's Automatic. You can hear the joy bursting out of 'Musica' in every sassy synth line and throbbing bass pulse, coming on like the best Cerrone-approved synth-disco record you never heard. There's plenty of space for low slung, Balearic whispers like 'Return To Centaurus' too, just hinting at the range Mildlife are capable of on their finest album to date.

Review: Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy's first White Isle-inspired compilation, Balearic Breakfast (named in honour of her long-running radio show) rightly won plenty of plaudits, in part because her musical definition of 'Balearic' (a notoriously hard-to-tie-down genre) was eclectic, colourful and personal. As you'd expect, this sequel builds on the sound and success of that set by offering up another 12 top-notch treats, many of which have never appeared on vinyl before. Highlights are plentiful throughout, from the sun-soaked psychedelic nu-disco excellence of Manalo's 'Amalfi Drive', Todd Terje's classic 2000s rework of Dolle Jolle's 'Balearic Incarnation' and Calm's self-explanatory 'Mellow Mellow Acid Dub' of Gallo's 'Abysso', to Beyond The Wizard's Sleeve's sublime revision of Midlake's 'Roscoe' and Murphy's own rework of 'Love Scenes' by Hard Feelings.

Review: If you love The Orielles - and, let's face it, who hasn't fallen deeply for the West Yorkshire youths-done-very-good? - you'll be over the moon to learn Tableau makes a strong case for itself as their finest hour (or thereabouts) to date, while also adding more fuel to the argument that the band are up there with the best in their generation, and probably the preceding one. Having already proven themselves capable of creating these highly immersive, sweet but never twee psychedelic stunners, here they opt for something entirely different, and yet at some points similar. This record veers wildly, sometimes unpredictably but always beautifully from track to track. Indie dance, string orchestral, epic building rock, shoegaze, spoken word warm up, and blissed out lo fi. Album of the month? At the very least.
