Review: Should you find yourself in continental Europe, or the little islands surrounding it, you may be feeling a sense of the autumnal blues upon the release of this European Heartbreak LP. It's far from a morose and downcast listen though, with the choral of Annelotte de Graaf's voice a shining light to lead you through the trepidation of winter. On top of her two law degrees and work for the international war crimes tribunal, this latest opus provides her with a second album following Fading Lines of 2016, and expect spells of tatty pop intertwined with boops and breathy vocals that meet with subtle brass instrumentation, pianos and folky practices, all sung with a slight smug and smirk of discontent.

Review: It's not often you can legitimately call a record brave. Most of the time, when we use that word it's to describe wildly experimental sonics, cutting edge arrangements and never-heard-before noises. Anna Burch doesn't quite fit those descriptions, not that her unarguably 90s-influenced, Gen X survivalist rock tones don't impress. Nevertheless, she's taking the biggest risk of all on 'If You're Dreaming'; turning to face herself head on, and analyse what she sees. There's catchiness, and a stoner-ish, downtrodden or at least lackadaisical air to the way in which she approaches guitar scuzz and this immediately jumps out and grabs the ears. However, that slightly retro leaning approach to arrangements is contrasted by a very 21st Century take on life's great lessons, losses and triumphs - guiding themes behind much of the songwriting.

Review: Here it is then. The UK's Cockney wide-boy with a penchant for old school croonerdom - or at least showmanship - delivers his long awaited sixth album, his most anticipated to date and the one that's set to cement him even further as a household name. Like the guy in the sharp, Rat Pack-esque suite you talk to down the local boozer, a guy whose eccentricities are only equaled by his (often volatile) life experiences, 'The Night Chancers' is all about observations of everyday outsiders. In many ways the tracks themselves are relatively formulaic - nobody is re-writing any of the recording rules here. Constant use of female backing vocals accentuating some of the traditional pop roots at play here. Nevertheless, everything is exceptionally well produced, with Dury's dulcet, spoken word storytelling as blunt and uncompromising as it is poetic.

Review: The Australian collective continue to wave their freak flag high on this, the latest in a startlingly prolific series of records that have seen them rise to the higher echelons of garage/psych power. 'Quarters', however, is unique even for them - comprising four ten minute tracks, it takes a more free-form style, with loose jamming coalescing into a glorious wash of ethereal extrapolation. Not merely a band with a startling growth rate, King Gizzard here prove themselves one with plenty of sttings to their bow, and 'Quarters' will be greeted with good cheer by admirers of fans of Ty Segall and Follakzoid alike.

Review: Where would you be without Mark Lanegan? Where would any of us be without Mark Lanegan? Scratch and don't answer that - responses probably depend on personal experiences. Nevertheless, the man once most commonly known as the guy from Screaming Trees is nothing short of vital - incredible songwriter and top drawer musician, with his second album in under six months more than enough evidence to back those claims. In many ways 'Straight Songs Of Sorrow' is an amalgamation of all the artist has done and been before solo, which is saying something given this is studio LP number 12. Lyrically a testament to some of his darkest hours gone by, elements of early, rawer outings are more than audible, with lashings of the synth stuff that has typified later material acting as a counterbalance. Delicate acoustic and string workouts, shades of DNTEL, twisted organ cries and soul searching, dark, alternative rock moods.

Review: Possessed of one of those 'sing the phone book' voices that could extract gravely gravitas even from the back catalogue of Black Lace if he tried, Mark Lanegan might have been forgiven for resting on his considerable laurels, yet instead he's forged foward across each album with innovation and fortitude both - 'Gargoyle', aided and abetted once again by Rob Marshall and Alain Johannes, expands on the electronic textures and handsome melancholy of 2014's 'Phantom Radio', yet roots them in a bluesy grandeur amidst tales of lost love and redemption. With a lightness of touch balanced out against an effortless charisma of delivery, this is proof positive that Lanegan's gloomy charms render him a talent for the ages.

Review: Heart-on-sleeve isn't always the phrase you'd use to describe Mark Lanegan. Yet here on his 11th studio album the gravelly-voiced rock icon seems intent on making his exact feelings clear, which seem to centre on his appreciation of some of the UK's archetypal post punk and proto-electronic-indie outfits. "Playing Nero" and "Dark Disco Jag" in particular seem to owe much to the likes of New Order and Joy Division. These are no cheap knock-offs, though, and instead cement Lanegan's status as a hugely talented powerhouse of a rocker who's unafraid to call upon influences from psychedelic to New Wave as and when he feels like it, turning the whole thing into a collection of inescapable genius and unarguable talent. Great to have him back, and long may his fine form continue.

Review: Atina 'Mattiel' Brown is a 60s psyche-pop inspiration from Atlanta, Georgia, giving the ears of a modern age a new way to appreciate a lo-fi, garage rock style of storytelling. Satis Factory presents the band with its second album since debuting in 2017 with a self-titled LP, and Brown's voice for Mattiel still reigns supreme in its bluesy, telephone filtered manner. Co-produced by Randy Michael and Jonah Swilley and recorded in their native Atlanta, the vintage touches applied to the band's music sees an authentic blend of deadpan vocals, jangly guitars meet with a touch of spaghetti western, subtle touches of folk and rockabilly, with that perfect smattering of dusty sundown blues.

Review: Given that Mildlife's 2018 debut album Phase was both rather brilliant and a rip-roaring commercial success, this hotly anticipated follow-up will get plenty of attention. And rightly so, because Automatic may well be even better than its illustrious predecessor. Musically, it features the same unique mix of vintage krautrock synths, jazz-funk instrumentation and enjoyably organic grooves, just this time round they've stepped it up another notch or two. The Aussie combo is in fine form throughout, dotting between the Steely Dan style warmth of 'Rare Air', the Brit Funk style weightiness of 'Vapour', the cosmic, art-rock influenced haziness of 'Downstream', the almost horizontal bliss of nine-minute epic 'Citations', the colourful live nu-disco goodness of 'Memory Palace' and the seductive sweetness of 'Automatic'.

Review: Australian multi-instrumentalist four-piece Mildlife is all set to unleash its new album Automatic any time soon. Before that though they keep us happy with a new single that comes backed with some pretty big remixes. Adam Halliwell's flute on 'Vapour' is the standout feature on a lush broken beat tune that also makes great use of a vocoder. The first to add their own spin is Scottish legend and one half of Optimo, JD Twitch. Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy aka Cosmodelica is the second remixer and the Worldwide FM host and assured music aficionado comes correct with two versions, one of which is a nice instrumental.

Review: It's hard to believe The Orielles are still so young when you consider their position as mainstays of British alternative indie-surf-rock-pop business. Then you remember how they grabbed attention while still in school, bursting from the former mill town of Halifax, West Yorkshire, to widespread acclaim, and refused to look back since. On "Disco Volador" they show just how much versatility they've mastered along the way. "Bobbi's Second World", for example, is plucked straight from the Tom Tom Club playbook - funk fuelled, good time mayhem. "Whilst The Flowers Look" is more in line with the stuff that first won everyone over, although perhaps more complex. "A Material Mistake" ushers in siren-like moodiness, underlaid with guitar licks and warm strings to combat the icier sections. Those who think pop music needs more ideas might want to take note.

Delivered by a label associated with artists like Mattiel and Amber Arcades, Plip Blom see themselves in good company to deliver a full length LP following a run of 7" & 10" singles. The album features previously heard numbers like "Daddy Issues", a riffing example of the band's quick, almost surf rock style, with other semi-ironic titles like "Bedhead" offering something sentimental. With a host of other raucous and heavy distorted numbers too, Pip Blom's music falls somewhere between The Strokes, Hole and the best of alternative but radio friendly punk and garage rock.

Review: Sadly this 12" from f former 2 Bears man and rising star Raf Rundell (he of Raf Daddy fame) does not contain the original version of 'Monsterpiece', a deliciously cheery and kaleidoscopic affair that sounds like Prince after necking a couple of pills at Amnesia in Ibiza, but the included remixes are very good. Old pal, and regular Rundell collaborator Joe Goddard leads the way, re-configuring the cut as a woozy slab of vintage deep house/rubbery dub disco goodness. Speaking of dub disco, his 'Dub' mix is particularly inspired to our ears. Turn the record over and you get two more kaleidoscopic and synth-heavy takes from Harvey Sutherland. His vocal version, a Balearic boogie classic in the making, is seriously summery.

Review: Second time around for Saint Etienne's 2012 album "Words and Music by Saint Etienne", a typically breezy, summery and ear-pleasing affair in which Bob Stanley, Pete Wiggs and Sarah Cracknell delivered a suitably glossy, up-beat take on synth-pop with their usual effortlessly Balearic twist. Highlights are plentiful, from sunny opener "I've Got Your Music" and the string-laden swell of "The Last Days of Disco", to the largely acapella "Record Doctor", baggy and Balearic "Twenty Five Years" and the attractively jangling "Haunted Jukebox". The pop perfection continues on disc two ("More Words and Music"), a previously highly limited bonus album that was originally sold during one of the band's tours of North America.

Review: These English psychedelic pop ingenues may have retreated to their home studio to record their second effort, yet what's emerged is their most expansive and forward-thinking blast into the ether to date - taking on board kaleidoscopic keyboard-driven soundscapes as well as sunny eccentricity. these widescreen anthems draw a line in the cosmic continuum from The Flaming Lips through MGMT to the vast blue yonder, yet with individual character and songwriting chops to spare. Rising far above the majority of the overly reverential and predictable realm of the contemporary psych scene, Temples' aural marriage of the artily transcendental and the poppily terrestrial marks them out as genuine contenders for greatness.

Review: If you've been keeping an eye on the COVID-19 musical landscape a few things will be clear by now - much is in pieces, and Working Men's Club's debut album, arguably this year's most anticipated, has been postponed until October. You might also have picked up on the fact they made this pandemic party megamix available to stream for free for one week over summer, meaning it's probably scored a few living room moments already.

The release is basically 21-minutes of seamlessly melded synthdom taken from a full record which, as yet, hasn't really been heard save for a few tasters. And the result is perhaps the best example of the intensity, energy and drive that defines every one of the band's fabled live performances. Synth-punk-elec-indie packing huge sounds, finely tuned details and an overall forward atmosphere.

Review: One of the most hotly anticipated releases of the year has arguably been served well by the by now all so usual Covid delays. It certainly feels like the stars have aligned for Sydney Minksy-Sergeant and his band, and the good news is that the substance of this album is easily strong enough to live up to the growing snowball of hype that has preceded it. Every classic album needs a classic opening line, and "trapped inside a town, inside my mind", the first words you hear on the LP's opener 'Valleys', speaks volumes about who WMC are representing here - the lockdown generation of teens and 20-somethings left behind tom contemplate their existence in the bedrooms and bus shelters of smalltown Britain. Musically, it's the sound of a band who have grown up with club and indie and exude both, more by instinct than design, straddling Italo-disco and Fall-like lyrics on 'Valleys', sublime, sunny guitar pop on 'White Rooms & People', 'Angel' and 'Tomorrow' and darker, heavier industrial beats and crushing electro pressure on 'Teeth' and 'AAAA'. Believe the hype, at the very least this is one of the albums of the year and quite possibly much, much more.
