Review: Vick Lavander is a name that has always been a byword for deep house quality. His sound is couched in a classic template but comes with subtle tweaks and plenty of its own musical character. BEYOND is a bumper collection of beats which proves just that. There are silky and cosmically minded sounds like 'Time & Time Again' next to subtly jazzy dancers like 'Sunset BLVD' and dubby, elegant grooves like the life-affirming 'Grace'. The pace picks up with joints like 'Knights' but never at the expense of atmosphere and slows right down with swab-tinged downbeat delights like 'Good Timing'. A magnificently rich work.

Review: Given that even their most dancefloor-focused tunes are remarkably deep, immersive and sonically detailed, you'd think that Chaos In The CBD's music would suit the album format - it's just that until now, they've not recorded a full-length. A Deeper Life, then, marks a big step forward in the Helliker-Hales brothers' career. Predictably, it's borderline brilliant. Made with the assistance of a cast of collaborators and guest performers (flautist Nathan Haines, boogie revivalist Saucy Lady and original NJ garage-house hero Josh Milan included), it sees the Kiwi duo sashay their way through enveloping, musically expansive cuts - many downtempo and home-listening focused - that variously mix and match elements of deep house, nu-jazz, dub, 80s soul, hip-hop, trip-hop, Latin soul and much more besides. A genuine triumph, even by their high standards.

Review: Among heads, this is of the most hotly championed hip-hop collab records of all time - and yet it is all too unknown. Doomstarks is the fabled collaboration of masked raconteur come rapper MF Doom and one of nine sonic samurai, Ghostface Killah (here known as Tony Starks); Swift & Changeable: The Prequel is their quick-wristed, mic-proximate debut mixtape, released in 2012. Just as some comic books series would prologue their main stories with pre-release strips, The Prologue served as the "unofficial" warm-up to accompany the pair's long-anticipated debut album of the same name. The Prequel hears some of Doom and Ghost's most popular tracks and collabs from various projects, including the original Doomstarks tune 'Vistory Laps'; the album provides a chopped but not screwed experience, playing out in the style of a gapless, scratch-heavy DJ mix.

Review: Wilson Tanner steps on solid ground with Legends, a pastoral odyssey steeped in the rhythms of South Australia's Manon Farm. Swapping coastal breezes for the dusty toil of the vineyard, the duo channel the grit of farm life: dirt-crusted boots, crackling radios, and the far-off hum of summer crickets. Their previous works basked in suburban lethargy and nautical drift, but here, the focus is on the raw textures of agricultural labor, where ducks and dogs roam, tractors rumble past, and stainless steel tanks glint in the sun. Made entirely off-grid, the Manon sessions repurpose wind, brass, balalaika, and synth, rigged together with wire and tape. Legends distills the essence of natural winemaking into sound: feral, unfiltered, and alive with imperfections. Review: Originally released in 2002, this album remains one of Washington-based duo's most well-known albums, blending trip-hop, downtempo, and an eclectic mix of global influences. While it's often categorised as sophisticated lounge music, its world-fusion approach offers a real depth, from hypnotic opener 'Heaven's Gonna Burn Your Eyes', featuring Emiliana Torrini's airy vocals over a light, looping keyboard melody and deep bassline, onwards. The track's ethereal quality sets a contemplative tone and back s it up with dynamic shifts that make it equally as engaging. 'Facing East' brings in Middle Eastern violin phrases and tribal drums, adding a richer texture. Here, Thievery Corporation excels, weaving together global sounds into a flowing, immersive piece. Tracks like 'The Outernationalist' and 'Un Simple Histoire' fall into the duo's familiar patternipleasant but formulaic dub and bossa nova elements that, while polished, don't push boundaries. However, 'Meu Destino' and 'Exilo' set themselves apart thanks to the authentic performances from Patrick de Santo and Vernie Verla, allowing the music to breathe without overproduction. Helping to validate Thievery Corporation's signature sound, this is a beautifully produced work and somewhat of a landmark in the history of downtempo lounge-hop.

Review: The Iron Curtain, a politically charged term of the 20th century, symbolised the divide between East and West. Winston Churchill famously referenced this metaphor, describing how an "Iron Curtain" descended upon Europe, obscuring the actions behind it. This two-parter record from Jazzman does the impossible, lifting the curtain through sound alone, representing jazz's ablation of political and cultural barriers, as it flourished in Soviet states and exposed the contradictory histories of Soviet jazz, from the 1960s to the 80s. Despite Cold War tensions and MADs, the Soviets didn't hold their breath for a second, embracing the jazz modernisms of hard bop, modal, Latin jazz and Eastern folk-jazz. The resilience of jazz artists during an era of geopolitical conflict thus offers a sprightly affirmation of spirituality and formal reinvention, in the face of adversity.

With their country twang, Glenn Frey and Don Henley's songs were already cowboy-friendly, but this album took the concept further. Released in 1973, it captures everything you love about the Eagles from shit-kickin' rock n' roll like 'Out of Control' facing off with sentimental classic 'Tequila Sunrise'. After all this time it's the title track which remains one of the band's most beloved songs - everything a lonesome man on the prairie needs to hear after a hard day and a hoedown.

Review: Fraternal duo Chaos In The CBD open the latest chapter on a roundly impressive musical career, calling on an ensemble cast of creative collaborators to contribute to their debut long-player, 'A Deeper Life'. Louis and Ben 'Beans' Helliker-Hales have been on a non-stop roll since they began releasing music under the Chaos In The CBD moniker just over a decade ago. Recently adding a Fabric Presents compilation to their hefty singles catalogue, the siblings step up with arguably their most outstanding work to date. The likes of Blaze's Josh Milan, saxophonist Nathan Haines, longtime collaborator Isaac Aesili, and UK grime MC Novelist are just some of those drafted to embellish productions that range from head-nodding Balearic to the duo's more familiar dusty house thrust. Vast in scope, the collection drifts through all manner of sounds and styles, held together by a coherent production aesthetic and a gorgeously limber live musicality on display throughout. Highlights include the street soul swagger of 'Tears' (featuring Beantown disco queen, Saucy Lady), the searing soul of 'Wanna Tell Somebody', and the bittersweet deep house magnetism of 'Otaki'. Review: Scruscru and Los Protos hook up on the former's ever-reliable label for some more funk-fuelled and sample-heavy madness. This eight-tracker draws on the best of Library, jazz, hip hop and soul and collides elements of all of those together with some raw, and what sounds like, MPC beats, all tapped out with a lovably loose vibe. Some like 'Local Sugar Diggers' look up towards a sunny, cloudless sky, others like 'Dreams Of Sonora' are swaggering broken beat workouts with sensuous sax lines setting a steamy tone. 'Por Do Sol Em Shelekhmet' is another highlight with its aloof, angelic vocal tones.

Review: If you at first mistakenly read the title of the new Pye Corner Audio box set as "Where Things Are Now: No Tomorrow", you're not alone - Martin Jenkins' effortless blend of retro-nostalgia and forward-facing production is a keen match for reflexive cynicisms like this. His use of sizzling vintage audio-tropes could only have been achieved in the 21st Century and helps foster a reinstated optimism. The name of the full series is actually Where Things Are Hollow; and while two volumes have been released already, a third original one now comes added here, on top of a full remix roundoff featuring Alessandro Cortini, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith and John Talabot, producing this rather banging four-volume set.

Review: Neapolitan funk maestro Mystic Jungle returns with a new LP less than a year after the dreamy Words of Love with more astrally-charged electro/boogie/disco type wonderment. Dario di Pace's third full-length has been quietly brewing for years, shaped by studio shutdowns and shifts in location i and that patchwork journey adds a certain character to the gorgeously technicolour music on show. It's perhaps his most eclectic and free-flowing release yet: a bright, hazy blend of styles that feels both loose and deeply considered. On the dancefloor end, tracks like 'Secrets' and 'Some Lovin'' burst with disco grooves, searing guitars, call-and-response vocals and sultry sax lines. Elsewhere, 'Innervision' and 'Twilight' lean into lovers rock and wavy neon-dub pop, full of yearning, shimmer and otherworldly flourishes. Review: Detroit dub techno don Luke Hess says that this is his "most eclectic and techno-driven album to date" and that it blends together his signature subterranean sounds with his indelible Motor City touch. It again works well on cultured dance floors but is also a deeply spiritual album that will have your mind wandering to some lovely places. From the opening moments of 'Dokimion' you're sunk into widescreen soundscapes that pair painterly synths with immersive low ends. Cuts like 'Stoicheo' bring serene melodies and closer 'Hiketeria' is a misty, foggy cut that oozes late-night intimacy.

Review: Inspired by his neon-lit walks around London's docklands, crate digger Ilan Pdahtzur's 2019 compilation Night City Life marked him out as a dusty-fingered crate digger and record collector with a distinctive, synth-heavy musical vision. It made him the toast of the selector/collector community, but more than that it was a genuinely superb selection of obscure, hard-to-find cuts. This belated sequel is every bit as essential and filled, unsurprisingly, with rare and lesser-known gems. Highlights are too plentiful to mention, but our current favourites include Sharon & Tracey's 'The Sheik' (a belly-dancing inspired slab of TB-303 bass-driven house hedonism), Jennifer's 1992 Euro-house gem 'Come Into My Life', Scicilian musician Claudio D'Ignoti's boogie-era treat 'Ache Per Noir', and the fashion scene inspired leftfield synth-pop of Lena's 'Embrasse-Moi (Strumentale)'.

Review: 70s and early 80s Jamaican producer Keith Hudson's approach to dub was never about smooth edges or easy rhythms. His productions are dense, disorienting, heavy with delay, bass and drums that sound like they're ricocheting down a well. The Soul Syndicate, his long-time studio band, provide the backbone hereideeply locked-in grooves that Hudson warps into something ghostly. 'No Commitment' staggers forward with stabbing guitar chops that seem to dissolve mid-strike, while 'Ire Ire' loops through warped vocal fragments and echo chambers that stretch into infinity. 'Bad Things' and its dub counterpart pull apart the rhythm until it feels skeletal, each hit landing in the empty space between delay trails. Hudson's use of reverb and tape manipulation isn't just about atmosphere, but about control as well. He shifts and reshapes the mix to turn steady rhythms into something unsteady, always shifting just out of reach. 'Desiree' drifts through flickering hi-hats and cavernous low-end, while 'Keeping Us Together' seems to slow down and speed up in the same breath. There's something darker, more claustrophobic in the way he structures space and silence. Even the brighter moments, like 'Mercy' with its open, rolling groove, carry an unease, as if the music itself is bracing for collapse. Hudson was an architect of mood, twisting familiar elements into something deeply immersive and strangely hypnotic.

Review: Reissued in 2025, Flight Of The Conchords' debut 2008 LP compiled and studio-ized the very best of the New Zealand comedy duo's musical numbers, which had hitherto only appeared on TV and in concert. Billed as a final foil to "all the inexpert fan-made audio transfers which have bloated hard drives the world over" in the words of Sub Pop, Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clements' parodic folk efforts here are commendable. They evidently have an impressive phone book having drawn in some all-time greats to do justice to the goth rock godfathers, The Cure. The Wedding Present, Tanya Donnelly (Throwing Muses, The Breeders), Devics, Grand Duchy (Pixies' architect Black Francis with Violet Clark) are among the best known here. In terms of those who bring their own style and transform the original, it's worth noting The Poems performing '10:15 Saturday Night' and Elk City performing 'Close To Me'. Truly outstanding.

Review: A pillar of 70s jazz-funk and soul, this landmark release from Los Angeles artist Roy Ayers still sounds impossibly fresh. Originally released in 1976, it marked a shift towards more mellow, groove-based songwritinga and remains one of the most influential entries in Ayers' vast discography. He centres the vibraphone across ten tracks, using it as both melodic guide and percussive spirit. 'Hey, Uh-What You Say Come On' sets out the blueprint with radiant optimism, followed by the smoky bounce of 'The Golden Rod' and 'Keep On Walking'. 'You And Me My Love' and 'The Third Eye' stretch into dreamier territory, while 'It Ain't Your Sign (It's Your Mind)' and 'People And The World' inject a sharper social commentary. 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine' itself is a peak momentihazy, minimal, instantly transportive. Then comes the more eccentric double close of 'Tongue Power' and 'Lonesome Cowboy', where Ayers' soulful surrealism glows brightest.

Electric textures overlay each mix like catenary haywire, establishing a maverick sound that sits, forborne, in an uncomfortable social space, accepting social ills like falsity and duping: despite the literal aboveness of the title, the album seems to say, "the only way is through."

Review: It might be Pulp's first new album since We Love Life in 2001, but Jarvis Cocker has kept busy in that time, not least with his impeccable Jarv Is... project. Keeping himself match fit musically has evidently played into Pulp's hands because they sound inspired, at the top of their game and bound to consolidate their reputation one of the UK's most loved bands. Recorded with producer James Ford at Studio Orbb in North East London, they laid down eleven tracks in three weeks for this album and the lead single, 'Spike Island', is an enrapturing synth-led indie pop cut that whets the palate nicely for the other ten. The album is also their first since the passing of bassist Steve Mackay, who died in 2023. It is dedicated to his memory.
