Review: Bullion's first unofficial release, landing on the blogosphere almost 20 years ago in the immediate wake of J Dilla's untimely passing, gets an overdue repress on brand new label Bel Ami recordings. 'Pet Sounds: In The Key Of Dee' is rogue - remixing a legendary psychedelic pop epic in the style of a recently deceased hip hop legend isn't something many budding producers have attempted to do since, but Bullion's tasteful, painstakingly chopped flips of each song on The Beach Boys' 'Pet Sounds' rightfully took Myspace by storm, cementing his reputation as a versatile beatsmith and tastemaker. The rest is history. Our selects include the sluggish whomp of 'Sloppy Jay D' which calls to mind some of the trunk-shaking cuts from Dilla's posthumous 'Motor City' album, the plaintive, wall-of-sound meander of 'Caroline, no', and the heads-down, oneiric hum of the closer 'Don't Talk (Close Your Eyes)'. Classic!
