  3. Mist (2:22)
  4. The Village (6:23)
  5. Tu (4:56)
Review: REPRESS! Myles Serge could only be described as a maverick, a mysterious producer who happens to make some of the best house and techno around. This latest five-piece on the excellent Thema label is Serge through and through, and from "Clockworks" to "Tu", we're dropped in a warm and meditative zone that doesn't quite seem to make its mind up about which category it belongs to between house and techno. "Forgotten Folklore" reminds us of Terrence Dixon's output under his Population One alias - loose beats and melodies suspended in mid-air - and "Mist" is a minimal-tribal cut for added suspense. "The Village" calls to the dance floor thanks to its subtle waves of acid, and is perhaps the stand-out moment in this perfectly tidy EP. Choice gear.

Re Introduction (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SRR 001. Rel: 03 Apr 18
  1. Cale
  2. Treehouse
  3. Monte
  4. Decale
Review: DJ Deep and Roman Poncet launched their Sergei Rezza project some three years ago with a widely lauded album, and now they're back with their own label and a chance to fully explore the boundaries of their combined sound. The record starts off gently with the introspective, ambient lilt of "Cale" before wriggling into a knotted groove on "Treehouse" that places intricate rhythm programming at the forefront of the mix. "Monte" has a more forthright pulse at its core, but there's still space for some pattering percussion, and "Decale" shrugs off the drums to explore guitar licks with an almost Balearic finish to them.

Evolution 5 Technology (12" + insert)
Cat: DE 126. Rel: 23 Jun 16
  1. Evolution 5 Technology (7" vocal) (4:37)
  2. Evolution 5 Technology (dub mix) (6:01)
  3. Evolution 5 Technology (JTC remix) (7:00)
Review: It would be fair to say that Series-A's Evolution Technology is something of a long-lost electro classic. Written and produced by Detroit friends DJ Maestro and Kid Fresh in 1987, 50 promo copies of the record were pressed before the label they'd signed to, California's Satellite Records, went bankrupt. This was always a shame, as "Evolution Technology" is something of a killer: a spellbinding chunk of futurist electro that updated the Cybotron blueprint for the emerging Motor City techno generation. As well as the original 7" and Dub versions, this first "proper" release also features a brand new rework from Tad Mullinix (under the JTC pseudonym), which appropriately re-casts the track as a spacey Detroit techno shuffler.

  2. Torque (5:55)
  3. Crashing (3:13)
  4. Always Falling, Never Declining (6:21)
  5. Search Lights (6:27)
Review: SK_Eleven founder Setaoc Mass continues his long association with Len Faki's label Figure, an imprint that will soon notch up a century of releases. At five tracks deep, Flying Machine is undeniably an expansive affair, with the long-serving producer using the opportunity to touch on a number of styles. So, while opener "Letatlin" is a fine sortie through deep space ambience, the track that follows, "Torque", is a metallic and clonking chunk of peak-time techno. This contrasting approach continues across the EP, where the fluid, positive and beat-free "Crashing" is in turn followed by the muscular, arpeggio-driven moonlight techno of "Always Falling, Never Declining" and the rolling, bleep-heavy peak-time hypnotism of "Search Lights".

Review: It's been just over a year since Cale Sexton emerged out of Melbourne's suburban sprawl into the centre of its thriving club scene, in which time the sets he's delivered from behind a nest of wires and hardware have gained recognition as some of Melbourne's most compelling and sought after. Moving across a vast terrain of reference points, Sexton constructs dense soundscapes held together by tight programming, all of this culminating in the powerful live delivery he's become known for. These four songs mark an impressive debut EP, and the second release on Melbourne imprint Temporal Cast.

  2. Track 2 (6:57)
Review: SH2000, a mystery artist whose been busy keeping himself under the radar, returns to Volking Music with another EP (check the guy's Ethereal Sound release for a true lesson in deepness!) and it's two tracks of utter symphonic beauty. "Track 1" releases a steady, driving kick beneath airy, delayed sonics and dreamy melodies, while on the flip, "Track 2" heads into total abstraction thanks to a starry landscape of atmospherics gliding left, right and centre without the help of any beat or bassline. Breathtaking excursions into the ether.

  4. All Night Long (7:52)
Review: For the time being, How To Kill Detroit founder Shady P has decided remain incognito, preferring his music to do the talking for him. His latest outing comes via Glasgow's perennially on point Clan Destine, and you know that means trouble. There's four nasty pieces of work across two sides of wax, our favourite two cuts resting on the B-side: "A Man In Reverse" features Drowned on the 1's and 2's, and a bombshell of a percussion unit rattling away with pure grit amid nutty melodic patterns; this is followed by the face-melter going by the name of "All Night Long", and yes, it'll keep you going till' daylight thanks to that pneumatic drill of a kick drum.

  1. Dark Planet (4:33)
  2. Dark Planet (Modeselektor remix) (4:59)
Review: Modeselektor are clearly keen to make 50 Weapons' last few releases as strong as possible. For this 12", they've turned to Berlin techno titan Shed, who - somewhat predictably - more than delivers the goods. "Dark Planet" is a thick, tough and driving beast, with chopped-up, manipulated vocal snippets forming a quirky melody line above a thumping rhythm that neatly combines pounding kick-drums and hissing cymbals. This is no-nonsense, floor-friendly techno that comes laden with sly funk. Modeselektor themselves have a go at remixing it on the flip, delivering a far weirder, wilder, stranger and - bizarrely - more melodious 'broken techno' interpretation.

Review: It's harder to place Shed's positioning these days, with the German producer fluctuating between different sub-labels and sub-moniker, But, that's just one of the reasons why we love him so much. He returns to our charts after the last EQUALIZED 12" with his The Final Experiment label and an EP by the name of No Repress But Warehouse Find, forever referencing the Hardwax philosophy. Here, you have 6 heavy techno drillers, all in his dubby, washed-out style that we have and always will look at as a continuation of the Basic Channel dynasty. In all honesty, you'll be stuck in finding any better contemporary techno. BIG, BIG TIP!

  1. Break Up III Tk4 (5:06)
  2. Final Distortion (3:36)
  3. Up The Hills (3:53)
  4. Crystal Cubes (3:37)
Review: Over the last few years, Rene Pawlowitz has spent much of the time establishing a range of alternate aliases - Head High and WK7 amongst them - leaving little team for new Shed material. Constant Power is his first outing under the guise since 2013, and is every bit as essential as his previous material. There's a general '90s feel throughout, from the sharp-cornered dancefloor IDM business of "Final Distortion", to the Future Times-ish new age motifs and stuttering breaks of "Up The Hills" and Surgeon style assault of "Crystal Cubes". Best of all, though, is "Break Up II Tk4", an industrial strength fusion of thumping techno and hardcore-era breakbeat madness.

  4. Wisdom Of The Stars (10:47)
Review: Hailing from the dark and mysterious world of Bunker Records, Shemale makes a welcome return after many years of silence with this fantastic release on Tabernacle. "Star Chamber Summoning" sets a powerful tone - this is ambient music that demands attention through its sheer force of presence. "Way To Hyperborea" actually taps up some kind of beat structure, but it still behaves like a wayward backroom track with its undulating bassline and gravelly, brutally submerged beat. "Shores Of The Western Sea" is all analogue soundtrack bombast of the finest B-movie kind, and "Wisdom Of The Stars" strikes a more nightmarish note in its use of discordant synth drones.

Review: More classic and emotive techno sounds from a Detroit/Sheffield state of mind, from the always impressive John Shima, following up great releases on Firescope and Instruction. His new offering courtesy on the recently returned Exalt imprint is "Discreet" - a sombre, bleep fuelled epic, with a subtle flourish of funk and backed by the trademark clang and clatter of classic Roland drum machines. On the flip, underrated legend Matthew Puffett aka Future Beat Alliance takes the track into deeper hi-tech soul territory on his awe-inspiring rendition.
