  4. Luigi Madonna & Roberto Capuano - "Limitless" (6:46)
Review: More big guns for the main room (at peak time!) courtesy of tried and tested experts Drumcode - and they sure aren't messing around on part four of the sixth instalment of their A sides series. Tuscany's Luca Agnelli serves up the pummelling and furious DJ tool "Hypericum" while India's finest techno export Arjun Vagale continues to make waves with his dynamic sound and "Liquid" is no exception, as it electrifies your senses with rapid fire rhythms and mental synth sequences. On the flip, London's Vinicius Honorio serves up the tunneling and hypnotic journey that is "Diamond Dust" which has the potential to appeal to a wide cross section of techno DJs and their respective styles - loved the mesmerising Jeff Mills style chime melody on this one. Finally, two of the label's staples team up for what you could only expect as massive: Neapolitans Luigi Madonna & Roberto Capuano with the slinky late night tech house of "Limitless".

Cat: AMEN 003. Rel: 14 Nov 16
  1. Visionsquest (I) (8:13)
  2. Food Tool (5:52)
  3. Visionsquest (II) (7:14)
Review: Amenthia Recordings founder Agonis has largely impressed since making his debut at the tail end of 2015. It's likely that this third 12" will also be well received. Opener "Visionquest (1)" is not, as some may assume, a nod to the stripy t-shirt sporting label of the same name, but rather a deliciously melodious and ear-pleasing fusion of cascading IDM melody lines, breakbeat-driven intelligent techno grooves, and sumptuously colourful chord sequences. "Visionquest (II)" takes an almost opposite approach - think dark, locked-in, early morning techno chug - while "Food Tool" is a ragged and pulsating fusion of dense beats, ricocheting electronics, and gnarly lead lines.

Review: Last spotted cavorting with the likes of Troy Gunner and others on Brotherhood Sound System, Agrippa makes his official 12" debut with this forthright doublet on Berlin's Version imprint. "Mygraine Urgrain" is an iced-out electroid wonderland with spaced-out kicks and twisted alien textures while "Harbour Run" picks up the pace with a switchy broken drum arrangement and dense loopy bass textures that swirl around the groove with growing intensity. Watch out for his new label Par Avion coming soon...

  1. Inertia (5:28)
  2. Axial (6:22)
  3. Magnetism (6:19)
  4. Soul Drama (6:11)
Review: Spain's Alfonso Lopez, or otherwise known simply as Aiken, is certainly no newcomer to the scene. In fact, the imperceptible producer has been on consistent form since his first releases began to appear in that post-2010 techno wave that we're still arguably riding, managing to land on much sought-after labels like Semantica, Non Series, Timeline and, of course, the sublime Chronicle stable. The latter has also been home to other big dogs like Samuli Kemppi, Arnaud Le Texier and Detroit's Terrance Dixon (under that killer Population One moniker), so we come to this new EP with high expectations. Unsurprisingly, we haven't been let down. The opener "Inertia" is an all-out bleep attack that will satisfy any techno nerd's need, while "Axial" breaks out the acid in a feverishly refreshing style that recalls recent tunes from Milton Bradley. "Magnetism" is a much deeper affair, opting to shine through a crescendo of minimalistic frequencies, whereas "Soul Drama" delivers a freaky, spaced-out array of molecular beats and melodies. Killer techno fire!

  1. Low Dive (5:24)
  2. Always Never (6:30)
  3. Sides (10:37)
  4. Tell Her Why (3:57)
Review: Bay area microhouse legend and human beatbox Dave Aju is back with more cheeky digital shenanigans on the 10101 EP for Parisian pranksters Circus Company. A bit of a change from the Aju you'd know of several years ago; we were pleasantly surprised upon listening to the powerful opener "Low Dive" a Rene Pawlovitz style warehouse techno stomper, which nails the aesthetic right down to the factory floor rhythms to the evocative melodies.. plus some woozy delay drenched vocals! "Always Never" is a mellow, experimental electro cut that utilises the producer's trademark micro sampling and use of the stereo spectrum just wonderfully. On the flip, Aju dabbles once again in some sleazy lo-slung soul biz, on the deep down and dirty "Tell Her Why" awash in stoner crooning, psyched out harpsichords/bell tones and dope breaks.

Culminating in four tracks crossing genres and themes, pulling from influences and experiences throughout a history crafting his art within the Bucharest electronic music scene.

  1. Gravure/Continuum (Fis Hayfield To New Mills version) (7:01)
  2. Gravure/Continuum (Regis Whip Hand mix) (6:08)
Review: This 12" sees the welcome vinyl edition of remixes of Akkord's "Gravure/Continuum" from Fis and Regis which originally appeared on a CD issued through Fabric's Houndstooth label earlier this year. With the Mancunian duo possessing such a clinical take on rhythmic construction; it's always interesting to see how artists commissioned to remix Akkord choose to approach the task. Sometime Tri Angle artist Fis is on impeccable form twisting the track into paganistic string-laden ambience on his self-styled 'Hayfield To New Mills' version which brings to mind "Hashshashin Chant" era Demdike Stare. Downwards boss Regis goes for gravelly broken techno on his 'Whip Hand' mix though he channels similar levels of spectral foreboding to Fis in the underlying human groans set deep in the mix.

  1. No Longer Me (dub) (9:00)
  2. Smoke & Mirrors (5:54)
Review: Brooklyn's J Albert returns with more tripped-out lo-fi house. The Exotic Dance Records boss follows up some great releases of late on top labels such as 1080p, Hypercolour and Black Opal. Whether it's the euphoric strobe-lit ecstasy of "No Longer Me" (dub) that's awash in delay drenched rhythm patterns, snarling bass and hypnotic synth leads. Or the brooding B side cut "Smoke & Mirrors" which is reminiscent of fellow local Patricia and packed full of dusty drums, haunting pads and chilling chord progressions: this one's a totally heads down affair for very late at night. Black Orpheus is a Berlin based label run by expat Patrick Conway, who has appeared on such esteemed labels as REKIDS and Forbidden Planet.

  3. Deepstate Riddim (4:38)
  4. Designer Life (6:48)
Review: Exotic Dance Records founder J.Albert has been scouted out by Will Bankhead for the man's The Trilogy Tapes imprint, and we have to say that this feels like the perfect match. Both the label and the artist have a knack for the unexpected, with the former having released an infinite multitude of electronic genres and the latter twisting and turning between techno, electro, and something undefinable. Made up of glitchy breaks and surreal waves of electornic dust, "Money Between Friends" and "Envy Turned Curiosity" both exude an industrial dubbiness that is rarely achieved by others. On the B-side, "Deepstate Riddim" is some neo-jungle badness that evolves the genre magnificently, and "Designer Life" ends on a more sinister note, launching a minimal wave of electronics surrounded by warm blasts of sub-bass. Recommended, naturally...

Review: Wurzburg wonder Johannes Albert returns to Frank to cast more of his signature melodic techno spells. As always it's a vast spread; "Generators" is the initial full-pelt blast. A power lightning strike, causing your body to move involuntarily, it's Albert at his most active. "Minilogue" pays homage to Korg with a vibrant arpeggio and shimmering peaks while "Frame" closes on a beatless note; dense atmospheres that enshroud and mystify, it's Johannes at his most alluring. 1. Alex Do - "Concrete"
  2. Rodhad - "The Wall"
  3. Felix K - "Stone Edge"
Review: Following some standout solo releases from Rodhad and Recondite, the Dystopian camp take the various artists approach for their fourth release. First on the list is Alex Do, a young DJ who has evidently found kindred spirits in the Dystopian crew, and this EP provides the chance or them to showcase his debut production, "Concrete", a minimalistic combination of rigid kicks and claps, together with eerie morse code bleeps. Dystopian regular Rodhad returns with "The Wall", a fairly epic track which revolves around a slowly swelling tide of monotone synth horns which grow to monolithic proportions. However, the EP's standout moment belongs to Felix K, who leaves the experimental D&B stylings of his usual releases behind for a clattering 4/4 roller filled with his usual blend of tough beats and gentle ambience.

Artificial Sunsets (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: WB 021 . Rel: 23 May 17
  1. Artificial Sunsets (5:56)
  2. The Pursuit Of Happiness (5:29)
Review: From his roots in the none stranger Brighton techno scene through to his recent re-emergence on Workshop and the like, Ibrahim Alfa has managed to stay resolutely unique despite dipping in and out of the music game over the years. Wicked Bass have turned back to his considerable catalogue of gems to give "Artificial Sunsets" a fresh outing, and highly deserved it is too. With its tightly wound, snaking beat, chirpy but off-kilter chords and loungey background licks, it's a track with a surreal atmosphere all of its own that begs to be played at the after party. "The Pursuit Of Happiness" meanwhile is a bold and brassy stomper with massive bass and enough noise to make the Landstrumm fans screw their faces up.

Review: Ilario Alicante now makes his full debut Drumcode. He's established himself as a key player among a new breed of techno artists and really is one of the brightest stars in the game. Opening with "Times" Alicante gets straight into top gear, rolling through six minutes of pure power: this is a peak time tool if we've ever heard one and is set to be heard across dancefloors worldwide this year. "Awakened" is one you may have heard from label head honcho Adam Beyer's sets of late; rampant synths and mesmerising vocal hooks all make it one hell of a journey. "Sense" is a more industrial affair, led by its chunky bassline this one is a right trip too. The EP finishes off with "Apogeo", packed with hypnotic siren tones and acute percussion.

  4. Third Eye (7:24)
Review: Last year, Berlin-based Italian Ilario Alicanti pitched up on Drumcode for the very first time, following nine years spent building up his reputation via releases on some of European techno's best-loved labels. Figures & Echoes marks his return to the high profile Swedish imprint and begins with one of his most intense and energetic compositions yet: the throbbing, acid-fired, arpeggio-driven darkness of "Figure of RA". "The Acid Runner", a foreboding and panicked stomp through jacking acid house/big room techno follows, before fuzzy, ghostly and otherworldly motifs dance around a tribal techno groove on "Virgo's Echoes". A fine EP is completed via the creepy, sprinting-away-from-a-mugger-at-4am techno thump of "Third Eye".

Voodoo drum workouts and distant native tongues echo through the ages just like on the eponymous opening track. "Far East" merges the organic and synthetic gracefully in entrancing fashion, while "Pick Up Your Needle" (Initiation Rituals remix) on the flip entrances the listener with its wonderfully hypnotic polyrhythms. Pressed into eerie, marbled, black vinyl and hand stamped with that Meda Fury seal of excellence, this is vinyl only magic forest tracks for DJs.

Review: While he may have been operating in the underground for some time, Darren Allen's music is only just coming to light through his own Underlying Form label now. There's a range of styles on offer across this EP, kicking off with the subtle pulse of "Feel" before moving on to a distinctly French-flavoured micro house groove on "Inmost Cave" that wouldn't sound out of place on Telegraph Records. On the B side, "Routine Kills Inspiration" switches the mood up with a rougher sound palette, even if the arrangement is still a minimally-minded affair. Then it's left to Vid Vai to drop a complex reworking of "MD Habitat" loaded with intricate textures.

Review: Darren Allen's third EP to date comes through on his own Underlying Form label, and it's a pleasure to see the Northern Irish producer continuing to grow in both style and musical diversity. "Reconcile" is a stealthy tune, broken and shape-shifting in its approach to the groove, while "GPD (with Breakit)" fires off more charging percussion stabs amid the slabs of mutant bass. On the flip, "Bad Company" nudges along with a subby bass and what feels like a little disco sensibility, while "Deceiver" stomps out a killer techno pattern that feels like a whole new strain of sci-fi.
