Review: If anyone deserves a career retrospective, it's Burnt Friedman. The prolific German producer has been plugging away since the turn of the 1980s, delivering consistently impressive releases that subtly doff a cap to contemporary musical trends whilst clearing standing in a myriad of electronic styles. Anthology 1980-2017 brings together a selection of his finest moments (some in unique edited form) from many vinyl-only imprints, alongside a quartet of previously unheard cuts. There's naturally much to enjoy, from industrial-era electronica and dub-fuelled electronic exotica, to warm and twinkling ambient bliss and jazz-flecked IDM curiosities. In other words, it's a fittingly impressive celebration of one of electronic music's longest serving talents.

Review: When it comes to dub-fuelled, mind-altering insanity, few are capable of setting the pulse racing quite like German veteran Bernd "Burnt" Friedman. For proof, check this essential new EP. By his standards, it's particularly wild, utilizing psychedelic electronics, exotic and occasionally droning Indian sounds, weighty bass and ambidextrous rhythms that variously doff a camp to grime, dubstep and the polyrhythms of Africa. Our picks are intoxicating and fragrant opener "Broken Royal Shank" - Asian dancehall via Coburg - and the trance-inducing dub techno hypnotism of "Contrarian", though closing cut "Cabin In The Sky" is pretty darn tasty, too.

Review: Mohammad Reza Mortazavi is the perfect companion to Burnt Friedman's steely, minimalistic shades of broken dub techno. The Iranian percussionist comes as a surprise addition to the Nonplace catalogue, but he certainly makes for an even more cerebral drumming experience than the already off-kilter world of Friedman's tunes. Both the A-side's mixes of "Yek" are just on the right side of dark, combining Eastern influences together with colder, more industrial executions from the West. On the B-side, we have a similarly frenetic experience, where metallic drums collide with deep baselines and polyrhythmic flows spanning the full circle. Well, this might just be our favourite Nonplace yet!

  1. Manceingelani - "Vana Vasesi" (Theo Parrish remix)
  2. Zinja Hlungwani - "Ntombi Ya Mugaza" (Burnt Friedman remix)
Review: Honest Jon's continued endeavours to choose the interesting remix artists to tackle the high BPM joys of their Shangaan Electro compilation sees them turn to that venerable Detroit magician and erstwhile Wu Tang Clan member Theo Parrish. The Sound Signature boss comes through with a masterful thirteen minute plus rewiring of Mancingelani's "Vana Vasesi" which retains the thunderous tempo and brilliantly chaotic rhythms yet instils the track with a woozy, intoxicating swing via the twisting synth waves. Complementing this, iconic German producer Burnt Friedman turns in a remix of "Ntombi Ya Mugaza" by Zinja Hlungwani which is far less frenetic but no less enjoyable, flipping the track in a dub wise style with off kilter drum programming, spine tingling keys and staggered vocal affectations.
